Medical Whump - Cheat Sheet

Medical Whump - Cheat Sheet

I really love reading whump related stories, and I know that no one has the time to do 100% research, so here‘s somewhat of a cheat sheet including all commonly made mistakes. Feel free to write me what you‘d add, or ask questions.

I‘m not a medical professional, but I can explain most stuff quite well 😅

Temperature

Body heat CAN NOT be shared through wet clothes

Clinical treatments of hypothermia does most definitely include the administration of a bag of warm saline

Patients running a fever ARE NOT receiving cold baths/cooling bags. Because:

A too quick change in temperature can cause cellular damage

Cold can lead to shivering, which is warming the body up further

Burns

Burn wounds ARE NOT treated with cold patching, which would cause cellular damage because of a too quick change in temperature

They are, in fact, (if not third degrees) patched with a salve that has cooling and infection lowering effects

Burn treatment is incredibly painful, as it includes loosing the old skin in order to allow new sets of tissues to heal

Pulse / Breathing / Cardiopulmonary Resuscation

Pulse has to be analyzed given the context (resting, workout, ect)

Rescue breaths are no longer common practice (only if the patient drowned, asphyxiated, or a child / young adolescent)

A person can breathe without a pulse and vice versa

A flatline is the missing electrical activity in the heart, which means a patient is clinically dead.

A defibrillator disrupts an electrical pattern

A FLATLINE CAN NOT BE DEFIBRILLATED! Only thing this would cause is to burn the heart muscle

Cardiac Arrest DOES NOT necessarily mean a person flatlined. Cardiac Arrest is the term used for every sort of heart rhythm that doesn‘t produce a pulse

People who have suffered cardiac arrest and resuscitation efforts WILL NOT just miraculously be fine and talking and moving right afterwards

look i love the good omens fandom and all, but some people gotta get this idea out of their heads that in order to be non-binary, you must be androgynous. being non-binary is a complex specturm and people can use binary pronouns and still be non binary. people can still present as male or female and still be non binary.

and there's this idea that calling Aziraphale and Crowley non-binary is a "cop-out". thats entirely skipping over the fact that Crowley is clearly genderfluid (presenting as female multiple times, having a canon deadname, being referred to as she/her in the books). Aziraphale, though presenting and going by male pronouns, is still an angel. Neil has made it clear that all demons and angels are non-binary. it was something stated back in book Good Omens, not something added on just recently.

non-binary elements can be seen with the other demons/angels as well. like Micheal, though having a male name, presenting as female. or Beezlebub being an androgenous character. or Pollution going by they/them pronouns and being reffered to as 'sir', while presenting as female.

this is the most non-binary rep i have ever seen from a show. where literally most of the characters are non-binary and it is demonstrated throughout. this wasn't something just offhandedly mentioned, i have seen really shitty cop-outs before. This was not one of them. At all.

and even if you ignore all of what i just said, dont forget that Good Omens is a love story. And that Crowley and Aziraphale canonically love each other. And Neil has stated that the lines "you go to fast for me" and "to the world" were romantic.

just because they arent two gay men does not at all mean it is not queer rep. It absolutely is. gay men and women are not the only people in the lgbt+ community. we are a vast variety who all deserve representation in media. and the fact i see some of my fellow lgbt peoples trashing on non-binary representation really, really saddens me.

i personally felt represented as i am a transmasc person. i am on the non-binary spectrum, go by he/they pronouns, and mostly present as male or neutral. i dont mind being referred to as a guy, but i am not fully male-aligned. thats why i related to so many characters. Thats part of the reason this show is so important to me.

and i do want to say, im not here to get into argurments. if you disagree with me, cool, scross past and ignore this. but i will not take time out of my day to argue with strangers in my dms or in the comments section. im only here because i, as a non-binary person myself, wanted to explain how Good Omens is a good source of rep for trans/non-binary peoples

goodnight

you do know that when jewish and romani people say “never forget” we mean “learn about the holocaust so you can recognize the warning signs of facism and genocide” not “repeatedly bring up the holocaust whenever anything bad happens and exploit our pain and trauma to make people care about your cause” and when we say “never again” we mean “take action to prevent any stage of genocide on any scale by any means, hold collaborators responsible and don’t be complicit” not “only care about genocide when it’s too late”, right? or did you think it was just a fun catchphrase?

Writing Tips

Punctuating Dialogue

➸ “This is a sentence.”

➸ “This is a sentence with a dialogue tag at the end,” she said.

➸ “This,” he said, “is a sentence split by a dialogue tag.”

➸ “This is a sentence,” she said. “This is a new sentence. New sentences are capitalized.”

➸ “This is a sentence followed by an action.” He stood. “They are separate sentences because he did not speak by standing.”

➸ She said, “Use a comma to introduce dialogue. The quote is capitalized when the dialogue tag is at the beginning.”

➸ “Use a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote,” he said.

“Unless there is a question mark?” she asked.

“Or an exclamation point!” he answered. “The dialogue tag still remains uncapitalized because it’s not truly the end of the sentence.”

➸ “Periods and commas should be inside closing quotations.”

➸ “Hey!” she shouted, “Sometimes exclamation points are inside quotations.”

However, if it’s not dialogue exclamation points can also be “outside”!

➸ “Does this apply to question marks too?” he asked.

If it’s not dialogue, can question marks be “outside”? (Yes, they can.)

➸ “This applies to dashes too. Inside quotations dashes typically express—“

“Interruption” — but there are situations dashes may be outside.

➸ “You’ll notice that exclamation marks, question marks, and dashes do not have a comma after them. Ellipses don’t have a comma after them either…” she said.

➸ “My teacher said, ‘Use single quotation marks when quoting within dialogue.’”

➸ “Use paragraph breaks to indicate a new speaker,” he said.

“The readers will know it’s someone else speaking.”

➸ “If it’s the same speaker but different paragraph, keep the closing quotation off.

“This shows it’s the same character continuing to speak.”
