list of mundane things that feel like ancient human rituals
cleaning or wipe your bare feet
breaking off a piece of bread and handing it to someone
putting the weight of a basket on your hip or head
eating nuts or berries while hunched over close to the ground
seeing something startling just out of your line of sight and very quickly stepping or leaping on to a larger object to get a better view
cupping your hands into running water to wash your face
the unanimous protection of a baby or child in a public space where women are present
when an elderly woman laughs and grips your forearm tightly
*All the respect, of course. No offense is meant to anyone. This was just me pondering how daemons might work in various religious traditions, completely fictional*
During Catholic masses, daemons tend to be quiet and respectful. They are careful not to make too much movement, too many sounds, or draw too much attention to themselves. Some daemons that are small enough prefer to stay ON their person, while others remain next to them. Larger daemons often rest on the outsides of the pews, while bird daemons will perch above.
Muslim daemons pray salah with their humans. They receive their own separate prayer mats. No matter their form, as best as they can muster, they will perform prostration and bow in the direction of the Kaaba.
Angels don’t have daemons, but jinn do.
A daemon knows as much Quran as their respective human. If the human is a Hafiz, the daemon is also considered one by both humans and daemons.
During kirtan in various traditions, daemons will sing alongside their humans, rather than staying silent. This is a contrast to some mass services, where only some daemons may choose to speak during the expected portions. More ecstatic forms of worship such as those found in Evangelical traditions also hold a significant amount of daemon vocality/activity within them.
There are some daemon form symbolisms that tend to carry on in each individual tradition. In Christianity, snake daemons may often invoke feelings of anxiety/apprehension in others. In Judaism and Islam, pigs may also be considered in the same way. Not as inherently “negative”, but connected to more stereotypes. Similarly, positive animals may be seen more favorably. For example, doves and lions in Christianity and cats in Islam.
In Hinduism, it is especially auspicious if you have certain daemons that are associated with one’s respective deity. For example, Calfs/cows for Krishna. There are numerous holidays revolving around the celebration of ones daemon. Just as humans have coming of age rituals, the daemons parents will often also celebrate the daemons respective rituals if they are involved.
Although daemon settling can happen at any point through ones teenage years, it is often expected for Jewish boys and girls to settle around their bar and bat mitzvah. It may not always happen, but there is an association between them. The same can be said for Confirmation, which often happens during high school.
There is no consensus on Jesus’ daemon (or Mary’s). Different scripture in the New Testament remembers his daemon differently. A lion, a pelican, a dove, a lamb. It could be, perhaps, that his daemon never settled at all. In Islam, all prophets are thought to have had never settling daemons, a reflection of their protection from sin and failure by Allah (swt).
There ARE cases of daemons differing in religious opinions than their human. The two are not always in sync with one another, and can feel differently. This is often a reflection of the persons own internal struggle.
will eventually have more, just had what was off the top of my head.
a dæmon that’s always asleep
a human and their dæmon always needing to touch somehow, even if it’s not convenient
a human and their dæmon that never touch, unless they absolutely have to
a dæmon that never speaks, even to their partner
conversely, a dæmon that never stops speaking
a human and their dæmon constantly fighting
a dæmon that can’t ever sit still
a dæmon that just can’t muster the energy to move
a dæmon that keeps hurting their human (and vice versa), even when they don’t mean to
a dæmon that’s always criticizing their partner
a dæmon that constantly switches spontaneously between hyperactive and lethargic
a dæmon that’s always hiding, even when they’re around people they trust
would it have counted as bestiality if tobias had fucked that hawk
i’m obsessed with the way the episode titles are not only individual chapters from the books, but also reflect multiple things that occur in the story.
lyra’s jordan showed us her carefree life in oxford, the way her experience of jordan is changed by asriel’s discoveries and the reaction of the scholars, how mrs coulter’s arrival changes the way she looks at oxford and encourages her to leave, and the children disappearing around her
the idea of north reflects on the way lyra sees the north (in the arctic institute) and how her vision is changed when she finds the plans in mrs coulter’s study and discovers something is happening there. and then we have the way the episode ends with roger and the other children going north to “the best place you could possibly go to” and we still aren’t supposed to know what happens there, we only have an idea of north
the spies appear in various forms, firstly the magisterium police force searching the gyptian boats, the spy flies and benjamin and tony sneaking into mrs coulter’s flat to find information. lyra beginning to use the alethiometer is arguably a form of spying, while boreal is shown to spy more and more as he finds out about john parry and his family
armour showed the hunt for iorek’s armour, and the gyptians seek ‘armour’ or protection in the witches, iorek byrnison and lee scoresby
the lost boy is billy costa, but in this episode we are also introduced to will, a boy who is lost without knowledge of his father and the burden of caring for his mother all by himself
yknow what my friend and i talked about today??? they did an entire season in 1963, with like,,, 2.5 plotlines focused around injustice/discrimination/etc..... without saying a slur. yeah they said queer, but if anything it was to demonstrate how that word has been reclaimed. they didnt say f*g, they didnt say the n-word, when in reality those words most likely wouldve been thrown around like nothing in the situations depicted.
thats how easy it is lmao. they managed to accurately depict these characters in ACTUAL HISTORICAL SITUATIONS and did so without using slurs to make their point. it’s just amazing to me because all three of those confrontation scenes were impactful and meaningful anyways without it.
Touch ID! Phones can regongise a dæmon’s paw print or maybe a feather print or just their skin in general as well as yours, so that if you’re in an emergency your dæ can unlock your phone for you! (Also would probably end up with you finding a lot of selfies your dæ took whilst you were looking away from your phone)
Playgrounds! Playgrounds having special adaptations so dæmons of all shapes and sizes can play with their humans. Would probably include more open spaces for bigger dæs and not having climbing frames that are so narrow and closed in, whilst also having places where children with smaller dæs can hide out and feel protected and closed in. Also the playgrounds would probably be bigger in general for kids with bigger dæmons and if the people caring for them have bigger dæs
Sleepovers with your dæ! Kids and teens staying up late with their dæmons and nicking sweets from the cupboards. Watching scary films on their phone and comforting eachother when it gets scary (and trying not to be too loud and wake up parents).
Feel free to add more! Like seriously, add more we are obsessed with modern dæmon headcanons 😂
Paul (he/him) & Kleytos (he/him). We're so new into daemonism and witchcraft, so... Give us a chance.
