my art programs are dying so i couldn’t color this one how i wanted, whops. EDIT: COLOUR UPDATE. while the lovely @southrobin was visiting form Singapore, she got Photoshop back for me, so now i can colour things not jsut in Manga Studio. So that’s nice!

that feeling when you’ve been reading all those gentle soft happy fanfics where everyone is gay and in love and it’s not a big deal and their friends all support them.

and your favourite superhero couples and detectives and kings and warlocks are just domestic and happy.

and then you emerge into the real world and it’s just not like that.

you walk into your job in the morning and know that if anyone knew, you’d be out the door. kids use the word ‘gay’ as a slur and it might be silly but it makes something hurt inside your chest. you look at your mother and think of the words she’d use to cut you with if you told her. the disgust on her face. you have your family around you and you know it could all be shattered in a minute and it would be you who’d done it.

everyone assumes your straightness. people look at you strangely when you use ‘they/them’ pronouns when asking what their fiancé’s name is, bcs you don’t want to make the same mistake that others make with you. you file forms with spaces for the mother’s name and father’s name and wonder how you’d fill them out if you had a partner and a child. you work with children and wonder what they have to hide about themselves.

and then, sometimes, you go home and read some more fanfic. maybe you write some, or draw fanart if that’s your thing. that’s the best thing, that we’re dreaming about a better world. maybe we’re not famous or published or earning money for what we do. but writing and reading fanworks like this helps a heck of a lot of people, including me, feel happy and comforted and like it’s possible that they might belong one day. that it gets better.

thank you, everyone who creates fanworks where being gay is simply treated as normal. your work is healing and wholesome and full of heart and goodness. and much as i may love the canon, it’s not the canon - it’s the fanworks that are a safe haven to retreat to and recover and heal.

Being a fangirl means you probably have incurable insomnia, hundreds if not thousands of fanfics you want to read but don’t know the name so they’re practically lost, and you’re often viewed as crazy (by yourself or others) because of the inhuman noises you make.

I’ve seen an awful lot of posts re: the new Murtagh book about how “unfair” Eragon and Nasuada were to Murtagh by railing at him and telling him to turn on Galbatorix in Inheritance. And I find that so shocking? what were they supposed to be doing, whispering “it’s ok sweetie, do your best alright we luv you :) uwu take your time honey”?? Dude has had his will broken and his mind enslaved by an evil mastermind, he’s full of rage and angst– shouldn’t they be trying to bring those emotions to the surface to help him break free? Also, Murtagh is not the kind of character that enjoys a pity party or is even vaguely comfortable with being vulnerable around others, including those he loves (on many levels), as a result of all those years of abuse and torture. I doubt it would’ve felt very compelling to him if his companions stayed silent or just offered platitudes and hollow encouragements– what should they have said, you got this, bro”?

Idk, I think that it’s interesting that as a fandom we can spend a lot of mental energy (and I mean a lot, 20 years of it over here on my end!!) bending over backwards being compassionate towards Broody McWarcrimes because he has been mind controlled and tortured within an inch of his life, but Goodboy Mainkid and Badass Queenieface try to get him out of his broody dark spiral of a brain for once and it’s like “oh my god, they’re so manipulative, they don’t even care”. Eragon had seen and done Some Shit and Nasuada was also a tortured mind control prisoner (by this guy!!), but for not being moody emo kids about their pain, the way Murtagh is, and compartmentalizing it differently than he does (too stoically, possibly), it’s like it erases their suffering for some people, and I think that’s an unfortunate reaction. If your traumatized friend was maybe the key to saving all your lives, wouldn’t you try to snap them out of their misery in any way you could, magic or no magic? Paolini says it himself multiple times in the new book - “Murtagh was feeling bad for himself again”. It’s the way a lot of us would cope with severely traumatic shit, I’m sure, brood and overthink and marinate in our pain. That doesn’t mean it’s compelling behavior for the people who are depending on you. I think Murtagh needed that needling, that boost from Nasuada and Eragon to get the ball rolling, or else he would not have been clear-headed enough to really think about his true name changing, because he would still have been stuck in the dark, sad spiral of the mind control, and it might have taken more time than they really had for him to get right with himself. They’re not chiding him and making light of his plight, they’re reminding him that he is even stronger than he knows and that they believe in him.

I love that little emo-boy blorbo, but he broods too much, and I think it’s ok for them to say it!

Red velvet cupcake: why do you like Gray Fullbuster so much? All he does is strip and make ice sculptures lol

Gray Fullbuster. Love of my life. The only anime/manga dude I fell for the first time I saw him until now. Like, I know there are other good looking anime dudes out there but seriously, the resident Ice Mage from Fairy Tail still has my heart. 

Here are the reasons why:

1. He’s probably one of the most normal members from Fairy TailOkay he does strip from time to time (but come on, it was part of his training with Ur), but if you overlook that, he’s one of the sane people in their guild (like hello, even their Master Makarov can be wack at times lol)

He’s also a kind af guy, in general. He may not look it, Gray is a gentleman, is pretty sensitive to emotions (especially to his closest friends), and knows how to swallow his pride and freaking apologize. 

2. He’s so coolLiterally and figuratively. If he’s not fighting with Natsu or anyone in the guild, he just radiates c a l m. 

Also, unlike Natsu who speaks his mind out, Gray is relatively laidback, reserved, and thinks first before he acts. And me likey *swoon*

3. Fashion sense on point

Yo, have you seen him when he’s got clothes on? The man’s got style, let’s be real here

4. Character Development MVP

If there’s one character in Fairy Tail who had the best character development, I’ll give the trophy to Gray. He went from someone willing to sacrifice himself just to end the ghosts of his past that were haunting him (poor man was so caught up in his past that his guilt messed him up), to someone who now looks into the future, values his life, and never gives up for his friends and family aka the guild. 

5. The way he babies Lucy and Wendy

JUST LOOK AT HIM

6. His beautiful ice-make magic

His weapons are honestly beautiful and aesthetic. And they’re made of ice too, so the pretty factor just went up to 100. 

Also when he upgraded from Ice Make Wizard to Ice Demon Slayer? GIIIIIIIIRRRRRRLLLL 

7. Sometimes a dork

The way he called Frosch cute sksksksksksksks tell me that is adorable or I will throw hands (lol jk)

8. (BONUS) He’s also hot when he’s mad
