Sam and Bucky are tipped off by Sharon to the Power Broker's location, it's a trap. An explosion leaves Bucky extremely injured in Sam's arms, even with the medical help of SWORD its not looking good for Bucky and in a moment of vulnerability, believing this to be their final goodbye, Sam opens up to Bucky about Riley, his feelings on loosing people and finally his feelings for Bucky himself that Sam could never say before.

Sam believes he is talking to a unresponsive Bucky, however Bucky is just sleeping and can hear everything Sam is saying...

Chapter 2 is just getting edited, will be up in a day or two

“On your left!” Sam shouted, he flew down on his wings, throwing the shield into the crowd of people and watched them fall one by one in a domino effect. The shield came to a sudden halt as Bucky grabbed it, before throwing to the other side of the room where people came charging towards him. He caught it once again and threw it up into the air, where Sam reclaimed it, ready to throw again. “The Power Broker really means business Sam!” Bucky said through the com in Sam’s ear. Sam watched as one of the fallen people got up and rushed at Bucky, who easily threw him across the room with his left arm. Bucky then ran into the far side of the warehouse they where in. They had received a tip from a resourceful person, fully believing the Power Broker would be here, but so far all they had found was his associates from Madripoor. “Sharon said he would be here, damn it!” Sam cursed, he flew up for a better look “Redwing, run another body scan of this building. Bucky see anything yet?” “No, nothing Sam” Came Bucky’s voice “Just loads of unconscious people on the floor. Nice shield throwing, you’re getting better.” Sam smiled, a compliment from the bionic staring man was his highlight, not that he would ever tell Bucky that. He flew higher, he had a hunch he wanted to check out. There was something now quite right here. Sharon was sure the Power Broker had left Madripoor, she had been tracking him for some time and had kept Sam and Bucky up to date on his movements since they had taken down the flag smashers. However she had never got a picture of the guy, so Sam and Bucky weren’t too sure what he looked like, however Sam knew if he were here, the guy wouldn’t be doing manual lifting with the others they had currently found here. From his own eyes, he couldn’t see anybody else in here. Feedback from Redwing came into his goggles, the only beings here were the people currently out cold on the floor, and him and Bucky. “Buck, there’s nobody else here. Think he got away?” Sam asked. There was a paused “Buck?” He asked “Here Sam” Bucky said quietly “What’s wrong?” Sam asked. “Not sure” Bucky said “Sam, there’s something here. I can hear something” Sam flew down and instructed Redwing to check it out. He then seen something he missed before. Where Bucky was standing, there appeared to be a fake wall behind him, no bigger than space a small person could crawl through, moving closer, Sam could see it stretched on further out of their sight. Sam bet it led somewhere out of here, a secret passage of some sort and sure enough, he bet the Power Broker would be on the other side. Bingo. Found him. Sam pointed to the wall, indicating to Bucky that there was indeed something behind it. He put his fingers to his lips to tell Bucky to not make a sound. Bucky looked and nodded, he understood what Sam was telling him. They both worked in perfect sync with each other now, a far cry from before when they clashed. Bucky looked to Sam for instruction and Sam pointed down to where Redwing was showing the hollowness in the wall, and sure enough, there was a small vent. Bucky pointed to it and Sam nodded. Bucky reached down and silently pulled at the vent with his vibranium hand, it came off after some force applied. There was a click. Bucky looked up at Sam “Did you hear that?” He whispered. It was followed by a growing roaring noise. Sudden heat. “SAM” Bucky yelled. Bucky leaped up and threw Sam away from him. Sam only knew what had happened when he was mid-flight, his wings came out as he tried desperately to stop him from crashing into the wall. The explosion threw him fast through the air and he felt his head scrap across a beam. He turned to see a giant wall of fire blowing out right where he had been standing moments before with -

“BUCKY!” Sam shouted. He flew down and ran to the wall. The flames had fallen back as fast as they came, now just burning in small fires and burned pieces of paper falling all around the room like ash. “Bucky?” Sam asked There was no answer. Sam found him. He was laying on the ground, his clothes were burned, his skin red. He wasn’t moving “Redwing, call for help” Sam shouted as he ran to Bucky’s side ‘Please don’t be dead’, Sam prayed. ‘Please don’t be dead’ Sam touched his neck, trying to find a pulse. He couldn’t feel anything “Bucky!” Sam pressed onto Bucky’s chest to confirm no heartbeat and using the skills he once learned as a Pararescue, he tried to restart his friend’s heart. “Com’on Bucky” He checked to see if Bucky was breathing. He wasn’t. Sam titled his head back and blocked his nose, he pressed his lips onto Bucky’s and blew air down Bucky’s throat. He started pressing down on his chest again. He checked for a pulse. There was still nothing. Sam was holding his own breath, panic gripped him. “Damnit Buck” No, no, no, not this again. He couldn’t lose another friend. “Bucky please just wake up” He took a deep breath and blew again into Bucky’s mouth. His hands were trembling now as he pressed down on Bucky’s chest. A flashback of Riley flying through the air in front of him. A RPG flew into the air from somewhere to the side and came right at Riley, Sam tried to call out a waning but it was too late. It hit Riley right in his side. It blew out, lit up the night and Sam screamed his name. Riley fell out of the sky and hit the ground. Sam screamed his name again. Blood started trickling out of Bucky's nose, it went all over Sam’s hands as he desperately tried to breath air into Bucky’s lungs. His blood ran from his nose into his mouth and Sam could taste it on his lips. Making noises of anguish, Sam tried again. His lips trembled as hot tears fell from his eyes. He was calling out Bucky’s name over and over, pushing down in desperation to keep his heart pumping, terrified to stop because then it would be official. Then it would mean Bucky had left him. Bucky’s eyes were open slightly, he was looking up at Sam without blinking, without moving. This time, Bucky would win the staring contest, because Sam knew he was gone. Just like Riley before him. “Bucky!” Sam sobbed.

Sitting in the Quinjet, Sam sat numbly. Redwing had called the closest facility that had any links to the Avengers and SWORD answered, they sent one of their medical teams to the warehouse. Sam didn’t know who or what SWORD was, he didn’t care just as long as they could help Bucky. Sam had hoped and prayed somebody would answer his call, he didn’t even know where the remaining Avengers were, only Rhodey who was too far away in Washington. He didn’t remember them taking Bucky from his hands, he hadn’t even noticed he had been holding onto Bucky’s body. They took Bucky and got Sam to his feet, they asked questions but Sam couldn’t answer them. They got him into the Quinjet, yet Sam didn’t remember sitting down. He just watched with one hand to his mouth as they placed Bucky on a trolley and got to work shocking his chest as they restarted his heart. They then got him breathing again and strapped an oxygen mask to his face. Looking down at his hands now, they were covered in Bucky’s blood, it had dried into his skin leaving them feeling sticky. He was probably in shock; they tried to talk to him again, asking him if he was ok, if he was hurt? He just sat and watched as they cut Bucky out of his clothing and wired him up to a machine. There were bleeps and other medical sounds. A young man came over and spoke to Sam, but Sam just looked at him as he pressed a cloth to Sam’s forehead, it stung a lot and Sam backed away, the pain cleared his head a little, the man took the cloth away and Sam could see his head had been bleeding. The man then cleaned Sam’s hands very carefully with a wipe, asking Sam if it were his blood, the blood just came off. They handed him a plastic cup filled with water but he hadn’t drank it, it sat untouched in his shaking hands. Sam was on edge, he had not yet joined the avengers in the time Steve discovered Hydra within SHIELD, but Sam had helped Steve during that time and he had seen Hydra himself, he knew they appeared to be normal agents, vastly undercover. Sleeping enemy agents. He knew that some members of SHIELD were the same ones who had been hurting Bucky, he had fought one himself inside of SHIELD right before the giant gun ship had crashed into the building he was in. If Hydra could sneak into SHIELD, what was stopping them from hiding in SWORD? He eyed them all, going from one to the next. He refused to take his eyes off Bucky, but even as he watched, it was quite a few seconds until he noticed a woman injecting something into Bucky’s arm. Sam blinked. “What is that?” Sam asked, “What are you giving him?” She answered him, but Sam’s head still wasn’t working. “Is he going to be ok?” He asked, his voice was trembling, he didn’t sound like himself at all. She answered him, but Sam didn’t hear her words.

The rest of the flight was over fast, he could feel the Quinjet slowing down and slowly getting lower as it prepared to land, Sam still sat next to where Bucky was laying on a trolley, he was still hanging in there. His body was burned, and he didn’t look like Bucky anymore. Sam stared at a spot over Bucky’s left eyebrow, it was red and angry, the skin around the wound already blistering. The Quinjet had stopped but Sam had not realised until the doors opened to bright sunlight from outside, a medic team rushed in to aid the people already gathered around Bucky. “Cap, can you tell me what happened?” Somebody asked. Sam didn’t answer, he watched as they wheeled Bucky out, still attached to all the machines, still beeping. “Cap?” The voice asked again Sam released they were talking to him, he turned to see a SWORD official. “Your partner was hurt doing an unauthorized mission, I know neither of you signed the accords, but considerable damage has been done to a privately owned warehouse and a report needs filing, may we talk more later?” Sam looked out to Bucky, being wheeled away from him “Ok, anything, but I need to go with him right now” Sam gave an apologetic nod and rushed over to the team of medics pushing Bucky out. Outside, Sam looked around fast, taking everything in. They were outside a set of large white building all stretching off as far as Sam could see, behind them was the sea. They had not been anywhere near the ocean when they had set off that morning. They entered the larger building, it was like a giant reception room, the walls were made of glass that let in maximum light, blinding Sam’s eyes because the sun shone harshly on the white walls and floor. He was further overwhelmed by giant TV screens flashing news from across the country and the world, various voice overs and announcements all trying to be heard. The medical team wheeled Bucky across the room with haste and doors flew open before Sam could follow. “Cap, wait here in the reception, we’re taking your partner out back, he’ll be taken care off” Sam snapped out of his daze “No, I need to be with him” Sam told them. “Sam, it will be best to wait here. Your partner is very sick” The man speaking to him was wearing a dark suit and looked just like a SHIELD operative. On top of that, his tone was patronizing. Even being Captain America did not stop certain people from speaking down to him, Sam had dealt with his sort of person before. He decided a long time ago to show them kindness and to always be civil to them, as he believed it was the best way to deal with this sort of thing, unlike Sarah who was more outspoken than he was. Sam decided right there he would reason with this man in a calm way. “No” Sam said firmly “He’s my family, I’m the only one he has, you know who he is. His entire family are dead, all his friends too. He only has me and I’m not leaving him. If he- if he dies, I need to be there with him so he’s not alone, because there is nobody else who can be here for him” That would do it. The one thing any person can relate to is family. But no. “I’m sorry Sam” The man said “You must wait here, please take a seat; I will send one of my team over for a statement” He walked away without even giving Sam a second thought. Sam glared after him, actually glared, which was not like Sam Wilson at all, then looked at the door Bucky had been taken through. He walked across the blinding white floor to the door, there was no handle to open the door. He tried to push it open but it was locked. He looked down to see a card reader, he would get Redwing to swipe him one before waiting here, nothing would stop him getting to Bucky. His idea sounded flawed the second he thought of it, the SWORD members didn’t just leave their cards hanging out the back of their pants. Sam sat on the seats in the waiting room. It was the last place he wanted to be, he hated how he didn’t know what was going on with Bucky, for nobody had come to see him. The minutes ticked by as Sam scanned the crowds of people going past, sure he would see a familiar face. Nick Fury would

let him in, Fury knew him, even once offered him a spy role by his side. Rhodey would make them listen, he outranked them all and held a lot of respect and authority, but there was nobody in the large room he knew, this wasn’t the Avengers’ compound but some government intelligence group. Over the windows the acronym that made up SWORD displayed in a circle, Sam’s eyes rested on ‘Weapon Observation’ and his stomach tightened. Was it a mistake bringing Bucky here? Should Sam have insisted somewhere else, the closest hospital maybe. A news special started on the giant screens over his head and all around the room. ‘Blip Guilt’ A woman appeared and introduced the latest special report on the Blip.

“Blip guilt is growing… Families found they’ve missed out on five years of their loved ones lives, children growing up without their parents, too young to remember them… we followed a case in which a mother legally reclaimed custody of her child that was adopted during the first 6 months after the Disappeared left, now the child won’t settle in their own home and the adopted parents have launched an appeal on the grounds of the child in question… Some partners moved on to new relationship, new husbands and wives and their old partner came back… Entire families left without support because the main breadwinner was blipped… Blip Guilt is a very real condition experts believe effects at least one in three Returners. Suffers say they are going without treatment and therapy…mental health rates from Blip Guilt are on the rise after entire family relations have broken down.”

Sam did not need to hear this right now, he did not need talk of the Blip on families on top of everything he was already feeling. He got back up and walked to the woman on reception. She smiled at him. “Hi” Sam said to her “I need to see my friend. James Buchanan Barnes, he was brought in here maybe an hour ago, I need to be with him” She smiled again and turned to the guard behind her, he spoke into the radio as Sam waited. The guard shook his head “I’m sorry sir” The woman said. Sam needed to know Bucky was ok. He couldn’t take not knowing anything “Can you just tell me if he’s ALIVE!” Sam shouted, he didn’t mean too, but his emotions were getting the better of him. He put his hand to his head and took a deep breath, trying to calm down. “Please, is he is still alive?” This time more quietly as people were looking at him. The man radioed in again. Sam waited, holding his breath “They’re still working on him” The guard said What did that even mean? Sam’s mind flicked to Bucky in a Hydra lab, laying on a table while all around him nameless people tortured him. This was driving Sam crazy, he needed to see Bucky right now, just to know he wasn’t being harmed, this time Sam used carefully chosen words. He hoped Bucky would never hear him using these words because that would crush him.

“You’ve seen how the Winter Soldier can react when he’s activated? Not even Steve Rogers could stop him. Do you think you can handle Bucky if he wakes up alone in a place he doesn’t know, next to medical equipment and he panics? Ever seen a trauma survivor lash out in a triggering environment? Try a Super soldier with a Vibranium arm. I’m sure you’ve seen it in your classified report, how strong and fast he is? Are you sure you don’t want a friendly face in there with him to calm him when he wakes? Otherwise, he’s going to freak out, believe he’s back somewhere terrible and he will try to break out and none of these doors will hold him back.” Bingo. The woman’s eyes went wide as she got the mental image of the Hydra assassin in her head for a second and Sam felt great shame. Somehow it felt like he had just betrayed Bucky and his progress, he would never tell Bucky he said those words, he knew they were not true, but right now he was so desperate, and he needed to reach his friend. The woman pressed a button on her keypad and the door near the desk clicked open. “Take him to his partner” she informed the guard Sam breathed a sigh of relief.

Here are some things i've noticed he does when he's lying.

- inflation in tone (he emphasizes words that Do Not need to be emphasized)

- wide eyes and nodding?? (almost as if he's trying to be sarcastic)

- he avoids the question or topic completely (aka, deflecting)

and that's all but yeah...hes a terrible liar

It sure is interesting to see how Karli was dealt with when a previous Girl That Was Radicalised into Terrorism (white, right wing version) became an Avenger and had a solo show

wait u know how bucky probably doesn’t remember anything from his time as the winter soldier? my new favourite headcanon is that he’s complete shite at being all stealthy and spy like, he makes a lot of noise when he’s walking around, he’s clumsy and bumps into things and he’s amazed at anything real spies like sharon and natasha do thinking it’s beyond impressive when really they’re just observant and careful.

he’s also a shit liar, which is why everyone including sam know about his feelings for sam.

Why am I not seeing any awareness on the fact that a religious place for muslims was attacked by Israeli forces? In the holy month of Ramadan, where people were literally praying inside the mosque (that mind you holds high regards as from what I’ve heard it’s been mentioned in the holy book, Quran, multiple of times) they were attacked with violence. The flash bangs, stun grenades and rubber bullets have left 200 innocent Palestinians injured. I’m just horrified honestly. My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Palestine 🥺💗

SUMMARY:  “We’d pay you handsomely,” repeated his manager, Nick Fury, over the phone. Oh, lord he was practically begging. Anything to up the reputation. Sam snapped out of his thoughts and almost kicked the ground. 

“I’m not going to pretend to date my bodyguard,” he groaned, letting his cigarette hang between his fingers. He fixed up his ruffled shirt before looking at Bucky, “James isn’t like that. Besides, the media got the video wrong.”

For me probably the most annoying part of Bucky’s reaction to Sam giving up the shield (emphasis on annoying, because I don’t mean “the worst”) is the fact that he could have changed Sam’s mind before he made that decision.

We know that Sam was open to have a conversation and build some sort of relationship with Bucky and we know from the first half of the season that he cares about him at least a little bit, so he probably would take his opinions into consideration - especially opinions related to Steve. But Sam never got to hear these opinions, because Bucky didn’t accept the offer and ignored the texts.

Some people like to simplify Sam’s decision to not become Captain and say it’s him being insecure. We all know it’s way more complicated than that and there are other serious reasons for his reluctance to take the shield. But you can’t fully ignore the fact that taking Steve’s space could make him feel… inadequate, for lack of a better word. It’s a big role to take. A man much less humble than Sam would feel a little out of place trying to play it.

And Sam didn’t have too much support about being the legacy hero in the first place. He has his family, yes… but Sarah would probably encourage him to just take care of himself instead of jumping into another fight he doesn’t have to participate in (even if she believes he’d be a good Captain). He talks with Rhodey about it, but they’re more like friendly coworkers than “friends who happen to be coworkers”, so it’s different. And Rhodey really does understand what made Sam give up the shield, so he obviously doesn’t push, trying to make him change his mind.

Other than that… Sam’s pretty much alone.

If there was a person, who could have given him enough courage and motivation to take the shield it would’ve been Bucky. Because they were both very close to Steve, they both have strong opinions about him being a Captain, and Bucky definitely thinks that Sam’s a good person for this job. An oppinion Sam would probably value a lot in other circumstances. But Bucky missed his chance to influence Sam in a positive way and be there for him.

If he just tried to keep a positive relationship with Sam he would most likely be the first person to know that Sam has doubts. And I don’t know if his endorsement and support alone would make Sam entirely change his decision about the shield, but he’d be definitely more open to accepting the mantle if he knew that there was someone other that Steve who even wanted him to have it at all.

He didn’t know.

Good job, Barnes.

for some reason i really like those fics where its like sam actually finds bucky at some point during the whole aou shababble and they begin this little love story that dwindles down until it becomes cw canon compliant, the ones where sam has also been taken by hydra at some point and bucky and him become mission partners, and the ones where sam gets taken by hydra AFTER meeting steve and meets bucky a little more formally while bucky is still in autopilot and bucky helps him escape...idk i just like the idea of bucky not being completely emotionally empty even while in hydra's hold
