Thinking about What If S3 E3 again today and the look on Bucky's face here is so powerful and telling of his thoughts and mental state.

He may not know he's Bucky Barnes, he knows he's about to be brainwashed but he is proud and himself.

He met someone [Alexei] he look up to, he finally act on his will, he did the "good guy thing" for the first time in how many years.

He was someone because he was finally seen as such so he had no problem looking HYDRA in the face and telling them "I won't awnser!"

I like my men socially unaware but emotionally conscious. Hugs a little to tight, and lingers a little to long. Arms always open. Gives the kind of forehead kisses that could heal the soul… five decades older then me…

This episode of What If... was living in my head rent-free. The ending destroyed me. How can everyone live their lives oblivious to the Winter Soldier's suffering? I love this nuance of the soldier being his own entity. For me, what we see in that episode is not Bucky Barnes, it's a non-robotic and humanized version of the Winter Soldier, which is very beautiful and dark. The fact that he has no idea that he is someone and Aleksei helping him with that is worth its weight in gold. It's a shame he couldn't free himself to be the hero of Deconey Island in the end, and this is the post.
