Silver Ravenwolf (hereâs why)
DJ Conway

Ann MouraÂ
Ralph Blum (runes)
approach Llewellyn-published books with caution â there are some great ones, but many arenât well researched and may contain misinformation.
if all else fails, Google the author and ask around to see what people have to say about them - many bad authors have entire pages or discussions dedicated on why to avoid them!
always fact check information (especially if it involves ingesting anything or putting anything on the skin â just because an ingredient is natural does not mean it isnât harmful/toxic)
How do I know what to believe? Critical Thinking and Pagan Books
(Part one of the Talismans, Pentacles, and Sigils series)
The Greater Key of Solomon contains numerous planetary pentacles for use in magickal operations. When properly constructed they are quite potent and require little additional input from the magician aside from periodic maintenance making them an excellent method of low energy spell casting. Rather than reproducing all of the pentacles here, please refer to this excerpt from the Greater Key before beginning.Â
Choose a pentacle appropriate for your working. In general Saturn pentacles deal with destruction and baneful magick, Jupiter with wealth and protection, Mars with war and domination, Sun with spirit control and status, Venus with love and emotional/sexual domination, Mercury with knowledge and acquisition, and the Moon with freedom, divination, and water. Note that these are not hard and fast classifications and the realm of influence for each planet varies widely so choose your pentacle carefully to ensure you receive the greatest effects.Â
Gather your materials. Traditionally pentacles were engraved on a disk of metal corresponding to the planet however this is a huge pain in the ass as well as expensive and toxic in many cases. Using metal is not strictly necessary though if you plan keeping it around for long term use, it can be beneficial. Paper works perfectly well and I suspect other materials would also be adequate so feel free to get creative. You will also need a Bible and a means of calculating the planetary hours (please see the âplanetary correspondencesâ and âcalculating the planetary hoursâ sections below for more information).Â
On the day and hour associated with your planet (day and hour of Jupiter etc), draw the pentacle in an appropriately colored ink. While it may be tempting to print out your pentacle, avoid doing so because the process of drawing it by hand is the majority of the casting method. It doesnât matter how the end product looks - a shitty pentacle will work just as well as a beautiful one, itâs the process that matters. You may start later than the planetary hour or finish drawing after the planetary hour has concluded but take care not to start early otherwise your pentacle will not be infused with the correct planetary energies. If you plan on drawing pentacles regularly, a compass and ruler will make your life much easier.Â
Casting - this is the easy part. During the correct day and planetary hour, light some incense and hold the pentacle over it while reciting Psalms 8, 21, 27, 29, 32, 51, 72, and 134. Next read the Bible verse associated with your pentacle over it. If your pentacle has any special instructions (such as the 6th pentacle of the Moon), do them now. Using the correct hour is more important than the day so you can fudge this if necessary but it will not function as reliably.Â
Youâre done! If you want to keep it around feel free to though I personally find that paper pentacles are only good for one or two uses or as a component of a planetary talisman.
Every day is ruled by one of the classical planets and each hour of the day is also ruled by a planet. These combinations of planetary day and hour can serve to either strengthen or weaken the planets effects depending on how the two interact with each other which in turn effects the outcome of planetary-based spellwork. For example Saturn (the great malefic) and Jupiter (the great benefic) Â donât play well together so curses cast on the day of Saturn in the hour of Jupiter will be weaker than normal or may not function at all. Conversely, Saturn and Mars serve to strengthen each other so a curse could be made more aggressive by casting during the day of Saturn, hour of Mars. The nitty-gritty of choosing the correct combination of planetary day and hour is outside the scope of this post so for our purposes we will be focusing on matching day and hour as this is when the planetâs influence is strongest.Â
Planetary hours are calculated from sunrise to sunset and from sunset to sunrise so though they are based off a 24 hour cycle, they are not one hour long nor does their duration and starting time stay consistent throughout the year. Instead the time between sunrise and sunset is divided into 12 equal parts as are the hours between sunset and sunrise. Each day begins on itâs ruling planet - the first hour of Sunday is the hour of the sun, the first hour of monday is the hour of the moon, and so forth. The following chart is useful for illustrating the procession of the hours but remember:Â these are not the times in which the planetary hour occursÂ
Quite frankly, manually determining the planetary hour is a pain in the ass. The good news is there is literally no reason whatsoever to do this by hand (unless youâre a masochist I guess). There are a number of programs, apps, and websites that will determine them for you based on your geographic location. ChronosXPÂ is a good option for Windows and there are numerous free apps in the Android and iOS stores. Â This is a good option for those of you who prefer to use your browser.Â

đ A spell bottle to aid in communicating with spirits/your spirit companion đ
Ingredients:Â
Orange peel- Friendship, success and prosperity
Chamomile- relaxationÂ
Mugwort- divination, astral projection, psychic abilitiesÂ
Mint- protection, happiness, communication
Cinnamon-Â awareness, strength
Other optional herbs would be:Â bay, nutmeg, thyme, lavender, star anise, poppy seeds, lemongrass
A crystal fragment of your choice, I chose amethyst and black tourmalineÂ
A white, blue, or purple birthday candle (or regular sized candle depending on how large your container is)
A jar/bottle with a lid (cork works best!)
Add the herbs to the jar one by one, speaking their properties and how they will add to the power of the jar. Hold the piece of crystal and envision it becoming charged with energy before putting it in. Put on the lid/cork. Light your candle and let a couple drops of wax fall onto the lid, then affix the bottom of the candle into the wax so it stands upright unaided. Hold the jar with the lit candle going and envision the desired effects of the spell (ex: you seeing/talking with spirits easily, seeing manifestations and signs) Continue this until the candle has burned down to your liking and the jar is sealed by its wax.Â
So a lot of people I think are feeling that once you become a witch you need to do lots of things, but they arenât terribly sure what it is they are âsupposedâ to do. Here are just a few little ideas for things you could do, if you wanted to.
Write affirmations or prayers
You could write them for daily use (like a morning affirmation), one for each day of the week, one for phases of the moon, or different ones to encourage or bind emotions or help you get through tough days.
Doodle sigils for use during a later time
Be creative and have fun, as you are not ârequiredâ to use any sigil you have made.Â
Think about what kind of energy (elemental, herbal, animal, planetary, etc) you thin would best be used to charge each sigil
Create lists of magical ideas you would like to explore or write spells for
Donât worry about whether something is ârealâ enough or will work or not.
Make a list of tools you would like and tools you already have
Draw or write about your perfect ideal tools and what you expect them to do for you
Include herbs, stones, crafts, natural finds, and anything else you like
Create an inventory of things around you, in your home, or that you can easily find, for use in your craft
Write what your current beliefs are
Contemplate your current belief system and morals, and how you think magic works.
Make a list of the most important things you want to learn more about or explore
Write down your current talents and abilities and try to think of ways they can be used magically
Build altars
Draw ideas or create digital altars if you do not have the physical space
Be inspired and create them spontaneously or spend your time and research all the elements.
Try writing a spell - it doesnât matter if you know a ârightâ or âcorrectâ way. Just give it a try and see what you come up with!
Research what sort of plants are local to your area and discover what their uses are
Look up the medicinal and magical uses of herbs and plants you have in the house and on your property
See if you can discover what sorts of special crystals or stones are near your area or mined close by
Take your lists of magical items you want and research their uses, both modern and historical
Try to discover not only what an item is used for, but why, and how it became associated with those actions.
Research what kind of religions and magical traditions have historically been practiced in your area
Look up lore and mythology for your geographic location
Find what sorts of helpful books are at your library, whether they be related to religion, psychology, meteorology, mythology, history, gardening, herbalism, cooking, magical traditions, or anything else pertaining to your magical education.
Find a popular pagan or magical author and research them to understand the context behind their writings and get an idea of what others think of them
Create your own reading list of library books to keep you occupied
Research closed religions/closed magical systems so you can understand what is not available for you to use, and to gain valuable information on other magical cultures.

Enchant food by adding in herbs or spices with a little energy and a magical command
Enchant drinks by stirring, adding energy, and a command
Give small offerings to spirits you work with by leaving a little food left over on your plate
Magically affirm that the food will bring you energy
Repeat prayers or affirmations
Spend time in meditation
If you meditate when you get up and when you go to bed, try a sunrise or sunset meditation, or complementary meditationsÂ
Identify what successes you have had that day
Push away or transform any negative energies send to you that day
Add additional protective shields for sleeping
That was all I could think of. Add more if you think of some!
