I almost bought this ominous box.

A big excuse i hear when i talk about things not being accessible to disabled people is “well it wasnt on purpose. They just didnt think of it like that” or “they didnt do it cause they hate disabled people, they just forgot”

When i complained about how into the spider-verse, along with other movies, has flashing lights that caused seizures and has no made it so disabled people cant even be safe watching a movie, it was “oh well, they didnt mean to make it that way! They just didnt know. You cant hate them for not knowing” despite the fact this is a hugely common complaint made towards movies, especially action movies, and theres almosy always papework they need to fill out for safety precaution.

Or when i complained that there will be places that have three sets of stairs but no ramp or elevator, i got “well its not that they dont want disabled people there, they just didnt think to put one in”

Or when disabled people who play video games went to twitter and brought up the fact many are not safe and the controllers arent as accessible as they should be, they were slammed with the excuse “well how were people supposed to know disabled people played video games?”

The list goes on. And what people dont get is that not knowing isnt an excuse, forgetting us isnt an excuse, excluding us simply because you didnt think to include us isnt an excuse for excluding us.

Ignorant ableism is still ableism, accidental ableism is still ableism and theres no excuses anymore.

You cant just “accidentally” forget disabled people exist, you cant just make a whole movie using lights that, for decades, have been criticized for being life threatening to disabled people and then have fans defend it with “well they didnt know”. You cant just say “its okay that this franchise made a dangerous video game and this corporation made consol after consol not accessible because they didnt think disabled people could play video games, and have that be a valid excuse.

Theres no valid reason why disabled people cant watch movies, go to places, and play games without it being accessible and safe, theres no valid reason to forget we exist.

Theres no valid reason to not include us, theres only ableist reasons. And sometimes that reason is “they hate disabled people” and other times its “they forgot about disabled people cause they never bothered to remember” or its “they didnt think to include disabled people because they dont care”.

Stop excusing this shit.

Cleaning The Oceans One Step At A Time

Cleaning the oceans one step at a time

Two Australians created this container that collects plastic, paper, oil, fuel and detergent floating in the ocean. They want to implement it the middle of next year to clean up the sea worldwide. It seems a great idea. The only “but” as always is money, so they are raising funds to get to their goal. You can see their project and donations here.

Charities/organisations to avoid:

PETA: They’d rather spend their money on publicity campaigns than on the animals in their care. PETA killed 73.8% of the animals in their care in 2015 (x)

FCKH8: Is a for-profit company that exploits oppressed groups for money. They’re also wildly uninformed, and spread misogyny, cissexism and bi/panphobia, as well as stealing their posts/designs (x)

Autism Speaks: They spend most of their money on researching a way to eliminate autism, heighten the stigma against autism and don’t have a single autistic person on their board (x)

Please support other, better charities, and feel free to add any others you can think of to this.

i’m going through some 19th century travel diaries of people traveling from england to australia, and there’s this diary dated 1835, by a woman called eliza taylor. she’s fascinated by flying fish and dolphins, sees seagulls (”they are like pigeons but make a similar noise to ducks”), stargazes “till tea time” with the captain and another woman passenger, describes the boatswain playing the violin very well. these two paragraphs struck me, this one she writes during some party on deck:

Their merriment accorded not with my gloomy reflections both for the past and the future. I am very melancholy this warm weather and often wonder whether in any future years I shall ever have a taste of the joys and scenes of happiness I had in my childhood. My evil genius whispers No.

(what happened to you, eliza? we won’t know. just a glimpse of her sadness in a travelogue is all we’re allowed to see)

and then, on another evening, she sees something that may be bioluminescence, or maybe just starlight:

In a fine blue sea, the foam caused by the vessel at night seems full of stars. The snow white ferment, with the golden sparkles in it is beautiful beyond description. You look over and devour it with your eyes, as you would do much etherial syllabub. Finalmente, the stars issue forth, and the Moon always more lovely the farther you get South, completed the magnificience of the imposing scene.

it’s such a lovely description, so full of wonder.

Hello, I´d like to share with you and your followers something I got from a writer in my fandom years ago. They left already but their words stuck with me. I´m going to share the wisdom with you in my own words.

Every time you get notes/kudos, imagine real people standing in front of you. Did you get 20 kudos? It might seem like it´s not much but would you fit so many people into your livingroom? It´s 20 REAL PEOPLE who decided to read your work and liked it. Imagine giving each of them a hug!

Did you get 50 kudos? Giving 50 hugs would take some time but you could give them cookies instead. Imagine 50 cookies. It´s a lot!

Did you get 100 kudos? Go to a mall and count 100 people, you´ll see it´s actually a lot more than you thought when you saw the number.

Did you get 500 kudos? 1 000? Well, it starts getting a bit overwhelming when you imagine such a crowd but it´s AMAZING that you made so many people happy with your writing. And you´d need a living room the size of a cncert hall to fit them all in :)
