If This Bill Goes Through AO3, Wattpad, TikTok, Tumblr, And Twitter Will Be Limited And Fanfiction Websites

We all know about the DDOS attacks on AO3 as it is still down. So it is very important we talk about the KOSA(Kids Online Safety Act) that is going to hit the floor soon. Because if that act goes through this could very much be the new reality of not only AO3 but online fandom spaces within the next year. The point of this act is to limit queer media and to eliminate online queer spaces.

Let me stress, the politicians are lying to you. Democrats and Republicans are lobbying for this. It is not pro trans rights and it is not pro lgbtq rights. This is very reminiscent of the Restrict Act! Politicians can SUE websites for having QEEER CONTENT. This act will not protect kids, it will further separate and marginalize the queer community!

If this bill goes through AO3, Wattpad, TikTok, Tumblr, and Twitter will be limited and fanfiction websites could be wiped out all together. If you are apart of fandom spaces pay attention and ACT! Call and email your senators! AND SIGN THE BELOW PETITIONS!

Going back through Magnus Archives reminded me of the one time I got scared shitless by my sister the first time I listened to it XD

I had just found it and was binging the episodes while waiting for my sister to finish up in the bathroom (this was during Covid and we share a room at home)

I was on the episode “A Father’s Love” (first episode with the Darkness for context) and I was fully immersed in the story, eyes shut and laying on my bed (with the lights on mind you) I reached the part where the daughter was describing the streetlights being slowly choked out by the thick darkness, and then the last one winked out and there was a knock at the door. RIGHT AT THAT MOMENT, the light in our room turned off

For reference, our room gets hit with the full power of the sun in the evening and we got blackout curtains a while ago to help block it out during the summer, and I had closed them earlier. So when the lights turned off, it was total darkness. And I freaked. the fuck. out.

Turns out, my sister had come in at some point during that point and thought I fell asleep (I had noise canceling earbuds in too, so I couldn’t hear her at all) so she shut the door and turned off the lights. Cue me jolting up about two feet of my bed with a shriek and scared the shit out of her XD

She still teases me about it to this day SKFJSK

Once again, Tumblr manages to succeed via just being honest with their users.

I made a post back around April fool's about the crabs being so popular because the joke was that every other website tries to trick you into clicking things so they can make money from your clicks and what if instead a website just asked "please click this revenue generating crab. It is there to generate revenue. In return you will have clicked on a crab. Nothing more." And the answer to that question was "people will frantically click on that crab. They don't hate the idea of the website getting money, they hate the idea of being profited on against their will".

So Tumblr implemented actual revenue crabs. "For this much money you can fill your or someone else's dash with virtual crabs. This will have the effect of there being crabs on their screen."

And people will buy those crabs. Because yes you're spending money on something stupid and useless but it's being sold to you as "hey you want something stupid and useless?", which is a nice change of pace from every other site trying to make itself out to be something more than what it is.

Twitter is floundering with the checkmark system because it's being sold as "confirm that you are someone important and who you say you are is true", which it isn't at all right now because anyone can buy one. You're buying a useless checkmark that only says that YOU think you're important. Or, more often than not right now, you are intending to trick other people into thinking you're someone you're not.

Meanwhile, Tumblr just said "Consider this double check mark. It does nothing. You will be marking yourself as someone who paid money for a meaningless checkmark and sometimes it will randomly turn into a bunch of crabs, making the site harder to use". And the userbase is like "Well sure, that sounds delightful."

The point is, despite what all the marketing and advertising people have tried to say, painting trash gold and trying to pass it off as something better is almost never as effective as just saying "hey you want this trash?"

Why yes, in fact, I do.
