It takes a gasp for you to wake. A loud, jarring breath causes you to sit up, eyes blown wide in fear. A drum has replaced your heart and it beats hard, daunting enough for you to place your hand on your chest. Pain rolls through your gut, heavy and full of aching fear. 

  It’s the type of fear that only subsides when you look over and see him. His slowly rising and falling back, sheets twisted around his torso and legs. Yellow goggles sit on the nightstand, perfectly put together beside his datapad. There is a bit of residue on his fingertips, left behind after a long day spent working on the Marauder, but he smells of freshly washed linen and soap. 

   And he’s alive. Your nightmare was a horrid thing, full of an agony that sits in your chest even as you watch his back rise and fall. It leaves doubt, even when you hear his breaths easing through his nose. 

   The need for assurance guides you closer towards him. You put an arm over his back and rest your cheek against his shoulder blade, taking a moment to listen and feel as his heart beats and his chest rises. It’s a gentle beat, a gentle sign of life, but as you listen to it thrum, it eases away the twist of loss in your chest. It washes away the struggle to breathe. 

   The sheets rustle. You grimace in regret as Tech turns onto his back to look at you. 

   “Mesh’la,” he murmurs, his voice hoarse with sleep. “Are you alright?” 

   His arm crosses over your back as he pulls you into his side. While he blinks the sleep out of his gaze, fingertips pressing into the corners of his tired eyes, you snuggle your cheek against his chest and take a deep breath, comforted by his smell and touch. 

   “Cyare,” he tries again when you do not speak, tipping his chin to look down at you. 

   You try to speak but when your voice shakes, you seal your lips. Tech’s hand gently rubs up and down your arm, patient as he waits for you to find the strength to speak on your own. 

   When you speak again, your voice trembles, “I had a nightmare.”

   “Of what?” 

   “Y…” You pause, the words catching in your throat. “N-Nevermind, it’s not important.” 

   “If it has proven itself bothersome enough to force you out of sleep, perhaps it should be considered important.” 

   “Tech,” you murmur, shaking your head. “I-I don’t want to talk about it.”

   He hums, fingertips leaving goosebumps as they dance up and down your arm. “How may I help? You seem anxious and… afraid.” 

   “Please, just...,” You squeeze him a bit closer to your chest, aching to pull him as near to you as possible. “Just stay here… be here with me.” 

   “I have no intention of going anywhere,” he remarks rather pointedly, causing you to manage the smallest smile. When he notices, he flashes his own little trace of amusement. “I am far too comfortable being right here with you.” 

   “Okay,” you hum, your voice a whisper as you place your palm against his bare chest, just to feel him exist.

Slowly, the lull of night returns, teasing you with another restless sleep. As your eyelids shut and flutter open in your battle to stay awake, you feel lips press against your hairline, lingering for just a moment before pulling away. 

  The idea of falling asleep reminds you why you sought him in the first place. The slow rise and fall of his fingertips along your arm alerts you to the nightmare and the feeling of loss and panic. Consuming fear. 

   But it is his body that eases it all away. His breaths, gentle and soothing. His heart, beating like the softest drum against the shell of your ear. The warmth of his chest kisses your cheek while the rise and fall of his steady breaths brings your fear and loss to a standstill, replaced by nothing but assurance.

   Tech’s voice is a whisper, soft and full of reassurance as you slowly fall into sleep. His fingertips never cease their gentle touch. His heart, never once pausing its strong beat. He smells of home. He feels like it, warm and alive against the comfort of your touch. 

    “I am here, mesh’la… and here is where I will stay.”

Oh no, what have I done?

The Trouble with Tribbles is my all-time favorite episode of Star Trek: The Original Series (and the only one I remember, to be honest). I couldn’t help but imagine what could happen if in a crossover universe the clones came across tribbles. At least one of the boys would try to keep one for sure… Big mistake. Just imagine how chaotic it would be, ahah!

For those who don’t know Star Trek, a tribble is a small, furry, and adorable creature which has the particularity to reproduce very very quickly.
