“You’re just doing this because you’re mad at her,” Mariko said, in a matter of fact tone.
“You don’t know anything,” he was quick to snap at the allegation. “The Silk District’s important.”
Compared to the Gold District, which he already had in the palm of his hands, it really wasn’t.
“If that’s the case, then I'm glad to hear you’re now realizing that, given the fact that you rejected them last year.” Mariko mumbled, she saw right through him.
“Watch your fuckin’ mouth Mariko. I haven’t even mentioned that woman once, don’t ever think she’s that important to me to the point where I’d make these types of decisions just because of her.” He said, slowly losing his temper.
The concubine turned unofficial advisor threw her hands up in defense, yet her expression was as bored as ever.
Sukuna does this, throws tantrums and threats around once things don’t go his way— and while he more often does go through with those threats than not, Mariko’s one of the scant few that can get away with calling the king out with her head still intact afterwards.
Although, he was probably going to take it out on the next civilian.
“Forget I even said anything,” she wanted to laugh. “So.. when are you getting rid of her and moving the new one in?”
“Who said I was getting rid of her?”
“You— never mind,” Mariko sighed. “Where’s Kaori going to stay?”
“I’m having the abandoned one by the entrance redone next week.”
She wanted to laugh again, knowing that was no place for a concubine, it was a glorified servants quarter at best. The worst part was how excited that girl and her father seemed once Sukuna finally accepted their offer, a whole 14 months later.
“Can I at least ask what you plan on doing with y/n? Half of the shrine heard you scream at her in her chambers, I’m just as curious to know too.”
“I’ll figure out what to do with her after she apologizes,” he gets up, pushing himself off the stone table. “Can’t have concubines thinking they can get away with telling me they hate me just because they’re all emotional.”
Mariko smirked as she watched him walk off, huffing and puffing because his little servant girl decided to give him a taste of his own medicine.
She knew he wasn’t going to get what he wanted out of you either— just one conversation with you at the festival was enough for the older concubine to know that Sukuna was probably going to have to talk to you first.
It’ll blow over.
Eventually.
She does hope you string it on for as long as you can though, but also before Kaori arrives to the shrine. The last thing she wanted was for the girl to arrive here thinking that the king was interested in her, only to end up pushed to the side and heartbroken like all the others.
—
“Hey!” Kaori called out to the teen, who was making her way to the west wing. “It’s Yumi, right?”
“Yuna,” the girl corrected her. “What do you want?” She asked hastily, annoyed that anyone would ever royally fuck up her name like that.
“Oh, I uh— sorry. I didn’t mean to mess up your name. I was wondering if you’d like to have tea with me sometime? You seem very kind, I could definitely use some of that around here.” She laughed nervously.
Yuna’s head lady in waiting wanted to laugh with her too, ignorance was truly bliss.
Yuna wasn’t hanging out with anybody around here unless Mariko, or now you, approve of her. She said it herself, she’s not dealing with another snarky bitch that thinks she’s special just because she got fucked by the king.
“Yeah, totally.” Her tone of voice did not match the grin on her face, that was menacing, at best. “I’ll have one of my attendants get back to you on that, right now I'm busy with..” she looked around, trying to find some excuse, but quickly gave up. “Yeah I’ll have one get back to you on that.” She concluded, turning on her heel and walking away before the shrine's newest addition could even answer.
She shook her head walking away, her attendants following.
“Don’t you think you could’ve been a little nicer to her?” Her head lady in waiting scolded her.
“I could’ve,” she admitted. “But there’s something off about her, I don’t like it.”
“How so?”
“Too nice– I don’t know how to explain it. I can tell she forced that pitch in her voice— that, along with her smile, made the hairs on the back of my neck raise.” She shivered a bit after saying that, genuinely.
The head lady in waiting thought she was just being a diva again, but let it be— with her history, you couldn’t exactly blame her for being picky when it came to which concubines she’d make time for and which ones she wouldn’t.
They continued to walk for another couple of minutes before they reached the steps of your chambers. Yuna was about to barge in, but her head lady in waiting stopped her and knocked on the door for her instead.
The thought of catching you in the act with the king was scary enough, who knows what he’d do. It was already known around the place that he’ll lose his shit if his time with you gets interrupted– Uraume being the exception.
You opened the door to find Yuna pouting, while all of her attendants greeted you with a smile. You held your finger up to your lips before letting her know he was sleeping.
“Is he 5?” She scoffed, for some reason the thought of Sukuna taking naps annoyed her– it didn’t seem very fitting for his personality.
“I can fucking hear you,” everyone heard him yell from the distance, in the direction of where your room was.
She was about to scream something back, but you covered her mouth and let her know he’d probably fall back asleep in a second or two.
And he did.
You led Yuna to the greenhouse, where you had recently had a table and a few chairs put in. You’ve come to like eating your breakfast and lunch there, surrounded by the greenery and sunlight that shone into it.
“Hey— what do you think of the new concubine?” The young girl asked after taking a bite out of her tea cake.
“Umm.. I don’t know, actually. I haven’t seen her around, let alone talk to her. Why?”
“Just wondering. She invited me for tea but I don’t really want to. She sounded kind of desperate when she asked.” Her face scrunched up, it was rather dramatic.
You laughed, “or maybe, she was just interested in making a new friend. You can’t automatically judge people like that, especially when the same thing happened to you.” You reminded her.
“I guess,” she rolled her eyes. “Will you go with me?”
“Yeah sure! We can have it here if you want?”
“Please. I don’t want a stranger in my space and her chambers are kind of old.” Her face scrunched up again as she continued to judge the newest concubine.
“Stop it,” you scolded her. “For all we know it could look better inside than all of ours, Kuna said he had it redone before she moved in.”
“Doubt it,” she continued. “He doesn’t care about that type of stuff. Do you know how long it took for him to have Ayame’s back room redone? He waited until there was a literal hole in the wall.”
“I can’t escape the torture of your voice,” Sukuna grumbled as he walked in, unable to go back to sleep after being ripped away from it. Before Yuna could respond with something equally snarky, he kept talking. “What’s this about a tea party?”
“Yuna doesn’t want to have tea with Kaori alone because she thinks there’s something off with her.”
“Oh,” he shrugged, sort of agreeing with the kid but not wanting to verbalize it, refusing to have the same views as her. He turned to you in confusion, “I thought you didn’t like tea?”
“That’s you. The last time I drank it around you, you went on a rant about how much you hated it for almost an hour, so now I drink it when you’re not around,” you reminded him.
“You shouldn’t let my preferences dictate what you do.” He coos, trying to downplay the visible disgust he had on his face that day.
“Kinda hard not to when you told me my insides were tainted by dirty leaf water.” You mumbled.
“You know I didn’t mean that.” His lips were pursed as he poked at your ear.
“You did– stop it. But it’s okay– I just wont drink it around you ever again.” You assured him, not that it made him feel better, especially after you smacked his hand away. He knew it would take a while to win this minor debate, so he just shut up and sat down next to you, trying to not look as annoyed as he felt. “Anyways, when did you want to do it?” You turned your attention back to Yuna, who looked like she wanted you and the king to keep bickering.
“No idea– I’ll let you know. I have to mentally prepare myself before getting to know someone new, so maybe a month from now,” she said, like it was the most normal thing in the world.
Sukuna once again agreed with her, on the inside.
“My King,” Uraume made their presence at the doorway known. He turned around and raised his brows so they could get on with it. “Lady Akame is asking for you, over urgent matters.. apparently.”
“Can it wait?” Sukuna grumbled. He already finished his responsibilities for the day, the last thing he wanted to do was get out of his seat.
“I’m.. not sure, she seemed frazzled over the matter.”
“Fuck— fine, let’s go.” He let out a grunt as he got up. “Bye.. for now,” he grudgingly said to you, ignoring Yuna as he walked away with his assistant.
—
Sukuna and Uraume silently looked up at the sight above them– four dead birds hanging from the tree in front of Ayame’s bedroom window, all held together by a rope around their necks.
“You didn’t hear anything last night?” He asked the concubine.
“No. Not even this morning, I finally noticed it this afternoon.”
He continued to examine the little present left behind for the Lady. He had to admit it was pretty weird, slightly disturbing even, given the fact that anyone around here who really had the guts to pull something off like this would be him.
But he’d never take part in such child’s play like this, if he truly wanted to scare someone he’d just do it in person rather than leave creepy messages in the form of dead animals.
“Sukuna.. I don’t feel safe,” she wearily says. “Can you stay here for today?”
She’s looking at him like she needs him and he doesn’t like that.
He stops himself from taking a deep breath because he knew that the extra oxygen to his brain would just somehow make him more annoyed. He was still tired over the fact that he got ripped out of his sleep earlier and doesn’t have the energy to come up with an excuse to say no.
“I’ll have a guard watch over the entrance.” He said, thinking it was a great solution as he turned to leave.
“You know,” her sudden change in tone stopped him, it was more firm. “You would’ve done it if she asked you to stay.”
He looked down and smiled, wondering if what he was asking for was simply too much— not expecting much from him, that is. His main responsibilities were enough to drive his nuts, daily.
“You know she wouldn’t actually ask that, right?” He chuckled. “Don’t start this shit with me now. Things between us have stayed the exact same since you first got here, don’t ask for a fuckin’ change years later.”
Ayame gripped onto her dress and looked down after hearing that, knowing there was nothing she could say to possibly sway him, especially after annoying him already. She doesn’t know what’s come over her, losing her patience with him and all, she had no right to.
He was right, things between them have never changed. But what was so bad with her wanting for a little more?
She’s loyal to him, and has always been what he’s ever asked her for.
Couldn’t he just go easy on her once?
—
You’ve been an anxious mess since you first woke up.
Today was the day, your parents were visiting the shrine and you’d be finally seeing them after a year.
Sure, there was enough time to prepare, but this was one of those situations where you dont think you’d ever be ready. Your ladies in waiting took their time getting you ready, secretly agreeing with each other that if they rushed it or seemed like they were, you’d probably be even more on edge.
You requested that they dressed you as simply as possible today—casual clothing, no jewelry or expensive garments whatsoever.
It’s not like you were bleeding money to begin with, but you wanted no trace of the things you owned. Your only goal was to wear clean simple clothes and have your hair look nice, not opting for makeup either.
Sukuna lounged around on the daybed in your dressing room while they got you ready, almost like a cat.
Eyes closed, at a safe distance, not paying attention to you.. even though you were the only reason why he was in the room to begin with.
You became even more nervous, more scattered on your walk to the pavilion. You felt like there were needles at your skin, that your heart was going to pound right out of your chest.
The closer you got to the pavilion, the more confused you grew since Sukuna was still walking behind you.
“What are you doing?” You turned to ask him.
“Walking with you?” He answered a little offensively, equally as confused as you.
You two should’ve definitely talked about this beforehand.
“Kuna.. no,” you said in a slightly hushed tone, shaking your head. He never even expressed interest in meeting them to begin with.
“What do you mean no?” He said, annoyance growing in his chest. “I’m coming with you so that they don’t do something stupid, like try to finish off what they started!”
“That’s the point! I want to see if they were being sincere in the letters or not.”
“You want to die?!” He nearly gasped, clearly not understanding where you were coming from.
“No! But if you’re there, they’re going to be scared and on their best behavior, I don’t want that.”
He let out a little groan, frustrated that you were right. “Ok but what if they try to hurt you?”
“Don’t you have visitors checked for weapons?’
“I do, but what if they strangle you to death?”
It was impressive how he never ran out of ideas to end someone's life, you had to give him that. But at this point, he was letting his mind run a little too wild.
“I doubt that,” you sighed, lips twitching while you kept yourself from smiling at him. “Just let me see them on my own– at least for a bit, okay?”
“...”
“Please?”
“Fine– stop looking at me like that,” he scoffed. “If you need help just.. scream for me or something.”
—
It’s only been a year, so nothing about them’s really changed– except for the god awful clothes they wore, trying to look like they weren't the “humble” country people they were. They probably took a loan out for the clothes, then ghosted whoever was stupid enough to give them money.
“My baby,” Your mother said in awe, looking you up and down, eyes lingering on your necklace a little too long. “I’m so glad to see you’re healthy and well.” She clasped her hands together.
“Come here,” your father stepped forward, pulling you into his embrace, your mother following right behind him and hugging you as well. “We’ve missed you so much.”
“Missed you too,” you forced out, you probably could’ve sounded more enthusiastic but your nerves were all over the place— it didn’t help that they brought your gold child of an older brother along with them, without letting you know in the last letter.
The hug was a little longer than expected, and also too tight, making you pull yourself away from them.
“Thanks for coming.”
“Of course sweetheart. When we found out you were here, we started sending letters nonstop– But you already know that,” your mother slightly laughed.
You didn’t.. for a while— but you just smile and nod, no point in getting into any of that now.
It was easy at first and as light hearted as it could get. You tried controlling which direction the conversation with them went, asking about your old neighbors, little siblings, and anyone else that came to mind.
Easy and light hearted— your neighbors were just as boring as ever, your siblings are a year older as suspected, and everyone else was just fine.
But then you slowly lose your hold on the conversation, your parents slowly but steadily taking the reigns like they always did.
First it was the usual ‘so how did you end up here?’ question.
You did your best answering it without mentioning them trying to kill you or the fact that the king randomly popped up in the hot springs one night and finger fucked you into becoming apart of his harem—
“— and yeah, that’s how I ended up here, he saw me working at the gardens then ordered me to become a concubine.”
At least with that explanation, it kept your relationship with him as vague as possible.
Then they moved on to asking questions about Sukuna, all of which you mainly answered ‘I’m not really sure’.
It felt like the first festival all over again honestly, the questions slowly becoming more harsher, a demanding undertone with the wording they used.
And in their true fashion, they brought up the topic Sukuna tried to tell you what they were truly coming for, money.
You didn’t think they could stoop any lower than the last time you saw them, but here they were, asking where the payment for you was allocated.
“That’s not how it works.. we're meant to be taken off the hands of our family and become his responsibility. There are no transactions in this,” you tried to power the explanation that they clearly weren't liking, given that their smiles slowly faded.
“So you’re not getting any sort of compensation like Hayami does?” Your fathers voice slightly faltered as he reworded the question your mother just asked, as if it would change your original answer.
“No.. I’m his partner–” you were cut off by your brother's laughter.
“Wow,” he slowly clapped, voice shaking from trying to hold himself back from laughing even further. “You really are worthless. He couldn’t even pay for you, you’re basically a slave! Well– that is until he gets tired of you, of course,” he smirked.
“I just said that's not how it works,” you spat back. “Were you even fucking listening the last five minutes?! You’re that dense that you couldn–”
“Watch the way you speak to your older brother!” Your father nearly lunged forward, yelling over you as your mind and body slowly start to feel like they’re separating. “You miraculously become the king's partner for a year, and you forget where you come from?! Have some respect for your elders!” He continued to scold you.
“She never had respect to begin with,” your brother cut in, still laughing. “She doesn’t even have respect for herself, going from being one man’s whore to another.”
“I’m done,” you threw your arms up. “I tried giving you all a chance, and this is how you treat me?! I mess up– once– and you all completely forget about all of the good qualities I have! I helped cook, I helped clean, I helped watch the kids because you couldn’t stop having them!” You point at your mother. “And yet I get treated like trash because of one mistake! Meanwhile you treat your lazy fucking son like he’s some kind of– some kind of king! You literally have to remind him to fucking bathe at 28 years old! At least someone wanted to marry me, don’t forget about all the rejections he’s got– not once has anyone ever accepted his proposals!” You were yelling at this point, ignoring your brother completely while looking back and forth between your parents. “He’s a lazy piece of shit! He’d be dead by now if you both didn’t wait on him, hand and foot, wiping his–”
You were cut off by a resounding slap, landing on the ground, with your brother standing directly in front of you, hand still raised– reddening from the force he used.
“Say that again,” he gritted his teeth, looking like he was about to cry— he looked pathetic. A weak man, one that’s never amounted to anything due to tradition.
The sight of him made you burst out laughing, it was worth tasting copper, as it pooled in your mouth— all over again.
“You’re a lazy, worthless PIG– people would rather DIE than touch you!” Your sentence was immediately followed by another slap, landing lighter than the last.
What a weak man.
He hesitated, clearly affected by your words. Your face was already numb from the first one, so the force behind it didn’t matter much, but it was worth it– watching him break down from your words, unable to control his own anger because he knew it was true.
“I’m gonna fucking kill you–”
“No you won't,” Sukuna playfully cut in, leaning against the stone pillar– a shock to them but routine for you.
You didn’t even bother starting the usual countdown in your head.
He was just there, proving the little theory of yours— the one where you just kind of knew he never truly let you out of your sight.
He was as imposing as ever, but for once, you found yourself thankful for it.
You thought he’d be angry, he wasn’t. It’s one thing when he’s angry— it was always followed up with an immediate punishment, where he’d make it as quick as possible while it was gruesome.
You know what to expect when he’s angry.
But he wasn’t, he was smiling, you were thankful you were that smile wasn’t directed towards you. The only thing off about him were his pupils.
They were dilated, just barely showing the usual burnt red color of his irises.
He didn’t look at you once, his attention was directed towards your brother, who looked almost starstruck from seeing the infamous man in person for the first time, and probably for the last.
Who were you kidding? This was the last, knowing Sukuna.
“Wow, you all talk of respect, yet here you all are holding your heads a little too high– that’s it, on your knees– much better.” He sneered as they bowed with no hesitation.
He strode his way towards the four of you– your dad looked up to you for help as the man's footsteps got closer, but quickly learned that if you were ever to be truly useless in your life, it would be right about now.
Sukuna gently guided his head back down to the ground with the sole of his shoe, your father quietly doing so without protest.
“You all said it yourselves, she’s my slave– what could she possibly do right now?”
“M-my king, please– we were just disciplining our daughter,” your mothers voice trembled. “We meant no disrespect to you– at all!” She went on for another couple of minutes, talking about how it was a parents job to lead their children to the right place, and how a mothers job never ended.
Being a father himself at one point, he didn’t care.
“I see where you got your mouth from,” He shot you a cheeky grin, not responding to her once, ignoring her plea’s.
“Uraume!”
“Yes, my king?”
“Take this one to the throne room.” He pointed at your brother, who was trembling the most out of the three and rightfully so.
“As you wish.”
For once in his life, he said nothing– no protest, no pleading, he didn’t even look up from the ground as he walked with Uraume, knowing what was to come next for him.
Sukuna sighed and turned back to your parents. “You know, she was excited to see you both? You couldn’t imagine my surprise when I saw her getting smacked. And look! Now she’s sad! Actually no, don’t look, keep your heads down.”
He continued to walk around them, keeping their little outfits in mind like you had— they did look ridiculous. You didn’t even have to tell him, he saw the look on your face when you first saw them.
Not that he’d tell you that, especially when he promised to give you time alone with them.
“Well?” He stopped right behind them, looking at you. “What do you want me to do with them?”
“I—“ you lightly shook your head. “I don’t know, it’s not my decision to make.”
“Yes it is, this time it is.” He sternly said, waiting for an answer.
“I don’t want it to be,” you mumbled, pathetically protesting. You already knew what he was going to do, you didn’t want to be the one in charge of their fates.
Sukuna lightly hummed at your response, then looked back down at your parents. “I’d say that's pretty respectful, right?” He said boyishly. “If you were my parents, I would’ve asked to have you two killed by now.”
They continued to say nothing while Sukuna poked and prodded at them.
“Do you want me to hurt them?”
“Not really.”
“What a good daughter,” he bent down, getting as close to the old couple as possible. “She’s so shameless, yet here she is, wishing you both to go unharmed.”
He stood back up and took a moment to think.
“Well, as you wish, my little slave,” he chirped. “You two may leave now. Send another letter and I’ll send my assistant for your heads.” His threat sounded more like a promise.
Your parents both looked at each other in disbelief, letting out a breath since they’ve pretty much been holding it since the king had arrived. “What ab—“
“You’re not getting him back.” He cut them off, already knowing who they were asking about. “Now go.”
They both fled, not even bothering to dust off their clothing that was dirtied from the ground despite how expensive they must’ve been. You didn’t know what to feel or think. You should’ve felt more grateful that he had decided to spare them, the hurt they left in your heart would’ve remained the same whether they were dead or alive.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah.. are you?” You asked.
“I will be soon,” He was vague but you understood what he meant. He looked like he was mentally hanging out by a thread, itching to get his hands on something like he was some kind of addict in withdrawal. “You’re not going to hold this against me, right?” He asked, now staring off into space.
“He deserves it at this point,” you murmured, not expecting yourself to admit that despite the hatred you had towards your brother at this point.
“I’ll get going then.. see you later tonight.” He muttered, placing a kiss on your temple. It wasn’t as tender as all the other ones, he was in a rush and his mind was already somewhere else.
—
Sukuna didn’t come back to you that night, but sounds of non-stop screams haunted the halls of the estate that night.
The ones who had it almost as bad as your brother were the servants that slept near the throne room— listening to the repetitive cycle of death and revival at the hands of the man they served, who kept finding himself unsatisfied with each ending he served him.
He’d immediately come up with a newer, better way to finish him off right after the battered man took his last breath. He quickly revived him each time— allowing himself to indulge in the experimentation because they both deserved it.
Your brother for obvious reasons and Sukuna for trying to protect you, even though you willingly did it to yourself in his eyes.
Not that he’d tell you that.
It lasted all night, and if there was a hell, it would’ve been paradise compared to the reality the curse user gave him that night.
That’s all he really was at the end of the day if you stripped him down bare to the bone, a curse user.
The world just had the misfortune of someone as strong as him being born into a position of power— being born at all, really.
He’d admit it too, if you asked him.
A handful of servants witnessed him walking out of the throne room at the crack of dawn, covered from head to toe in blood– some dried and starting to crumble off his skin, some fresh and dripping, all none of his own.
It was almost funny, he had it all— the money, the power, and from what they can gather from the way he acts with you, love. Yet, none of those things made him happy the way using his powers to their fullest extent did.
While you may have unlocked a new side of him, he still wasn’t someone you could talk sense into, he just wasn’t wired that way.
He knows it’s wrong, he doesn’t care.
He accepted it a long time ago, and he hoped you could come to terms with it as well if you ever found out about what he truly dreams of at night.
Did he go too far by going all out on just a singular man?
He did, that was the whole point.
It’s been months since he got to do that. He missed it, so much so that your brother's “punishment” ended up being a reward for himself rather than payback for you.
A reward for holding out for as long as he could.
If you think the hearings are bad, may god help you– those are the days he actually shows restraint.
The only thing he actually felt guilty about was forgetting all about you the moment he stepped through those doors.
But even then, guilt was nothing but a fleeting thought for him.
It was a selfish act, he was a selfish person.
He wouldn’t doubt that you’d hold it against him if you’d known the gruesome details– but you wouldn’t find out, so he didn’t give a shit.
And despite the servants gossiping all day long, they weren't going to talk about it— no way.
Regular people could only take so much, and whoever heard him last night had more than enough just 5 minutes into involuntary listening to last night's activity.
Like most things they’ve seen or heard him do, they were going to keep their mouths shut, knowing that their king had more than a few screws loose.
Knowing they’d be next if they didn’t look away and act like everything was normal. And most importantly, knowing that each day he woke up and decided not to massacre everyone within his vicinity, was a true blessing.
