YatYin was his lordship's beloved confidant serving his royal prince 200 years ago before the republic revolution against the imperial government.  He saved his lordship's life during an assassination attempt and survived with severe wounds. However, unconscious and apart from his lordship,  YatYin was wrongly tossed on the cart of corpses during the chaos and was sealed hastily with a talisman alongside other corpsesto be taken away for a mass burial.  On a rocky road across the mountains at the border of the neighbouring country, YatYin fell down the cliff and continued drifting with the strong current of the mountain river, all the way into a deep underground cave, where he quickly froze to death. Having so many mortal regrets and having had absorbed so much negative energy from the dead and the cold, YatYin turned into a jiangshi.  There he lied, sealed dormant for the next 200 years until a hermit exorcist moved to the nearby mountain...   ~ I hope you'll be here to unseal YatYin with us and let the story unfold when the time's ripe for it ~

And her name was Nora Lee, and it was spoken all around

It's told that she was courted by two men of different kin

One of them a shoemaker that made boots of lizard skin

The other was the sheriff in this little town

And he swore he'd marry her or else he'd put her in the ground

One night the moon was brightly shining in the sky

She went to see the shoemaker and with him she did lie

"You are my own true love" she whispered soft and low

But they'd been spied upon that night, and soon the sheriff he would know

Then came a cold and dark night and the wind was blowin' free

The sheriff and his men they tied poor Nora to a tree

Full of wickedness they stole her maidenhead

Then they stabbed her with a knife 'till they were sure she was dead

Her body it was found the next day on the banks below

The news was heard and many hearts were filled with grief and woe

"The guilty one will soon be hung" the sheriff he did claim

And he called upon his men, the shoemaker to blame

The scaffold it was built and all the people gathered round

Just to watch that poor boy taken to his hangin' ground

The rope was tied around his neck for everyone to see

And as the hangman pulled the rope, then he would meet his Nora Lee

Ballad of Night

Arise my brothers, our night is not done. We stand at the gates fighting dozens with one. At dawn we'll sing songs of this glorious fight. Guardians alone will outlast this night. The foes fear our hammer, our bullet and blaze. Bear your dark helmets, no fear in our gaze. The glory of dawn tis a beautiful sight. One we'll only see if we outlast this night. Their horde is vast, this army of dark. But we are blessed with the Travelers mark. We will not give up will not yield to this blight. It cannot be long, we must outlast this night. Their blades are brutal, their hatred unyielding. So eager to burn what we all would die shielding. Don't may bring blood but that future's still bright. To me my brothers we'll outlast this night.

UMK 2023 Song review - Lxandra

The hype is very real around Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK), the Finnish national selection for Eurovision and the race to Liverpool continues with a ballad this time! 

Lxandra - Something To Lose 

Lxandra is a talented and let’s say an established artist with several independant releases under her belt and some of them already appearing several tv series for example. Her international sound isn’t a coincidence as she’s lived in Berlin and US and her UMK23 entry also has American songwriters and producers. She is clearly someone who’s got her vision and sound figured out and she doesn’t need UMK or Eurovision to define her. She has fan base but not in Finland and she’s hoping participating UMK would at least change that. 

Something to Lose is the only ballad in the selection of UMK this year. I’m hopeless lover of ballads so this was perhaps the entry I was anticipating the most even though I had never heard of Lxandra before. I wasn’t disappointed. 

This is a well produced, striking ballad with modern approach. The lyrics go deep which Lxandra interprets beautifully and tenderly. There’s darkness here, almost death but also something that is very fragile, angelic. In the music video she only doesn’t put her voice to work but her entire body interprets the message of the song. The video is perhaps the most beautiful UMK music video to date! 

This is not a power ballad and I’m hoping we’d get more volume vocally, instrumentally when on UMK stage - because the studio cut is somewhat lacking the peak. Someone might say this is forgettable and in some ways perhaps it is, I struggle also to remember the chorus or melody after but I remember the feeling that it gave me. It does make an impact clearly and the song is very gripping.

This is poetry, this is art - I can see juries reacting well to this but I’m nervous will the audience get it especially the ones who’re listening to it for the first time? This would be the question that was repeated if Lxandra advances to ESC. However this is a song that perhaps needs a visual performance and I hope YLE (TV broadcaster) gets it right and Lxandra can just focus on her own performance. I can definitely see myself voting for this but I doubt this would have the winner factor however.
