I’m Definitely Not The Target Audience For This - Blog Posts

I, fuelled purely by spite, decided to do something people have probably done before: analyse that one horrible perspective picture from the “a Minecraft Movie” Trailer.

I, Fuelled Purely By Spite, Decided To Do Something People Have Probably Done Before: Analyse That One

Key notes:

- I don’t know shit about modern Minecraft.

- The image I used is low quality. I stole the it from a Tumblr post. That doesn’t really negate my points as a whole, but some of them might be refuted on a better quality image (or proven better).

- General perspective is bad. The actors are way bigger than the tree. We already know this. However, block size consistency is also bad, for example the tree, again.

- The lighting looks very inconsistent, both between the poorly green screened actors and the scene itself. There’s gentle-looking lighting and harsh-looking lighting in the background. I understand different textures take light differently but it shouldn’t be that different. Also some of it definitely looks like the angle it’s coming from is different to others.

- The clouds don’t look like they’re anywhere other than around the mountains, even though there are clouds that suggest some are further forward.

- I can’t tell what the fuck is happening with the shadows. I know I said in the image the actors have long shadows but the more I looked, the less I could tell. There’s something off with them. That kid in the front looks like he’s not even got a shadow.

- Some parts of the scenery, especially those further back, look too smooth/realistic. It’s probably harder to keep them looking blocky, but then again they chose semi-realism for a film about the block game. That’s on them.

- This has a level of uncanniness that would have made me think it was AI if I didn’t know where it came from.
