Curate, connect, and discover
I just sorta felt like it was a fun thing to consider. Makes sense in my mind that Metal would experience some sort of identity crisis once they are free. Idk, but I’d love to expand on it more.
Context:
Metal is no longer with Eggman, and now knows they aren’t Sonic.
A sense of being. A sense of person. Most everyone has one. The knowledge of who they are as a living creature. Of what they are. Of who they want to be.
It’s often something that forms over the course of someone’s lifetime. Molded by one’s experiences, their trials and tribulations. Some are told what they are the second they are born. The second they are made. Told by one they saw above all what they were, who they were, how to feel, how to live their life. All to suddenly find out it was all a lie. All of it. An entire life, a lie. Not even the life of one’s own. Born from a bitter man’s manic desire to rule. A man they once cared so deeply for. Their father…
A liar.
Who am i?
Who manipulated them. For his own selfish interest.
Who am I…?
Did he ever care? How could he? How could he…?
Who am I……?
How could he… …?
Who am I………?
HOW COULDE HE?!?!-
???: “Metal…?”
…
They were spiraling in thought again. This has been happening more and more recently, they’ve tried their best not to fall into deep thought around Amy or Blaze, but they slip sometimes. As evident here.
A: “Metal, are you okay?”
They quickly scanned the room, trying to recall what was going on. They were in the living room, the clock read 4:24. They were sitting on a plush pink sofa, and Amy was telling them about… something. Something about shopping? Did she go shopping without them? Did she go to their favorite mall without them? Is she leaving them out on purpose? Is she-
A: “Metal!”
They blinked, before nodding.
A: “Metal, are you okay? You seem distracted… is something going on?”
As if on instinct, they shook their head. This wasn’t her burden. It’ll probably go away anyways. It’s merely a stray thought. No need to think about it to hard. Amy looked at them strangely, as if she was trying to see through their emotionless expression.
A: “… is something on your mind?”
They remained still. Should they tell her? It couldn’t hurt… could it? Would she see them differently? Would she still like them? What if these feelings aren’t true? They aren’t true. It’s must be a glitch or… something. It’s not real. The shook their head once again.
A: “Are you sure…”
She took their hand.
A: “I’m here for you Metal…”
… why did she have to make this so difficult? Why was she blessed with the ability to read them so easily? They began to heat up(panic), they felt backed in to a corner. They were scared. Would she accept them? Would she acknowledge them? What if she hates them? What if they make this complicated? It would be so much easier to ignore it and keep things how they are. Why would he- they… their cpu began running faster, as they began getting lost in fearful thought again, until-
A: “Hey!-“
They were quickly grabbed and pulled into a familiar comfort. Amy had pulled them in, gently embracing the worried robot in her arms. Metal remained still, their servos locked in position, but allowing their head to fall onto her shoulder.
A: “… is it that serious?”
She took his hand and placed it in her arm.
A: “Tap once for no, tap twice for yes..”
… they tapped her arm twice.
A: “Is something happening? Are you hurt? Do you need help with something?”
… is it worth it…?
They tapped twice.
A: “Can you tell me what’s wrong?”
Since they’ve been with Amy and Blaze, they were able to have a decent voice box installed, thanks to Tails. They weren’t unable to speak. They just preferred not to.
A: “… can you write it?”
Were they really about to do this? Without thinking, they tapped twice once more.
A: “Okay, I’ll go get a pencil and paper, I’ll be right back…”
She squeezed them softly before letting them go and leaving to a different room. It didn’t feel good. But she had to. What would they even write? How could they begin to explain, when they weren’t fully sure how they felt? How to explain what they felt.
She came back a minute later, a bit of paper and pen in hand. She sat back down and pulled Metal(?) back in. She slid the things into their lap.
A: “Whenever you’re ready…”
They gripped the paper carefully. They took the pen in their other hand. They thought for a second, reconsidering this whole thing. They could lie. They could write something else, something less… whatever they were feeling was. … maybe…
They began writing. They showed Amy.
“Who am I?”
Amy studied the question. Her brow furrowed as she considered it.
A: “Met-…”
She held them tighter.
A: “Are-… would I be wrong… to assume, you are having issues with-… your identity…?”
They gripped her arm tightly. Too late to back out now.
They tapped twice.
A: “… I understand. To be honest, I’ve sorta been… expecting this?”
Metal perked up when they heard this. Had they really been this obvious about it?
A: “Do you… have a preferred name-, or pronouns yet? Do you know how you identify?”
They took a second to process the total acceptance by their partner. They tapped twice. They took the paper once more and wrote something quickly. “Katami”
A; “Oh. I see.”
They began to heat up again. How did she mean that? Is she disappointed? Is she upset? Is she never going to want to see them again? Is she gonna kick them out? Is she really-
A: “That’s such a beautiful name… Katami. I hope you know… I still love you… it doesn’t matter ti me how you choose to identify… you’re my precious Katami…•
… if they could cry, they’d be bawling. Maybe, they had been overthinking the wrong thing. They were surprised. But, not shocked at all at the same time. Over course Amy would still care for them. It was silly to think otherwise.
They tapped twice, before letting themself relax in her arms.
She hugged them tighter, they could feel the tension in their servos loosen. The front door opened, soft humming followed the sound.
Blaze: “Hello Amy.”
Blaze joined them on the couch, taking seat beside the pink hedgehog.
B: “Is something the matter?”
A: “Yeah… well-… this is Katami…”
She had Katami face Blaze, who seemed confused at first. Amy leaned in and whispered something inaudible her, and Blaze’s ears perked in understanding.
B: “Ah…”
She looked calmly at Katami before carefully taking one of their hands into her own.
B: “Are you feeling well, Katami?”
It took them a moment to digest how loved they felt. They nodded.
