— YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES against the hot stage lights and breathe in adrenaline-soaked air. all you feel is fear, but you can’t allow yourself to be you at the moment. instead, you must slip into the skin of another, a character created over five hundred years ago. “in troy, there lies the scene.” your voice, shakespeare’s words. you chance a glance stage right. fourteen of your peers wait solemnly, curt nods urging you on.

your director, orson hobbs, waits beside them. his gaze pierces. his eyes unpeel you slowly, searching for every hairline fracture, every wisp of a flaw. he enjoys the art of tearing apart and remaking people. later, you think, he will pull you aside and rip you to shreds. perfection, he says, demands cruel management.

what you don’t know, what no one knows, is that there is no “later” for orson hobbs. by night’s end, he will be tangled in a shakespearean plot of his own. no one, not even police, will be able to discern the full story; but when his body is found the next morning, there can be no question that he was murdered.
