Когда ночью, а точнее в 4 утра, зазвонил телефон Костя честно пытался его выключить и проигнорировать. У него отпуск, он обещал Игорьку, которому как раз на днях исполнилось 13 лет, отложить работу хотя бы на половину положенного отпуска. Но что-то глубоко в душе громко загудело, когда он всматривался в незнакомый номер. Домашний телефон. Он берёт трубку и выходит в коридор.

Не успевает он и слова сказать, как замирает, услышав:

- дядя Костя.. В детском доме пожар, дядя Костя.. Помоги-..

Детский знакомый голос резко обрывается, а Константин уже надевает куртку, плевать что ничего не успел спросить, адрес детдома он помнит, кажется, наизусть. Обуваясь, он звонит пожарным, сообщает всё, что знает. Кидает трущему глаза и явно ещё не доконца проснувшемуся Игорьку, что это очень срочно и выбегает из дома.

Серёжа Разумовский, вот как зовут ребёнка на том конце провода. Ему девять, он сирота, учится в третьем классе придетдомовской школы и дружит с одним единственным мальчиком. Олегом Волковым. Смуглый, чёрноволосый и чёрноглазый, молчаливый и хмурый ребёнок. Всё то же самое, что и с Серёжей – девять лет, сирота, дружит только с Разумовским.

Костя однажды расследовал дело трёх мальчишек от 8 до 10 лет на пляже Невы, сгоревших в маленьком сарае для лодок заживо. Серёжа Разумовский в том деле выступил единственным свидетелем и, лично для Кости, подозреваемым. Но ни одного доказательства, ни одного следа. Ребёнок был чист, если не считать грязи на его одежде и крови на затянувшися ранках. Майор дал ему свой личный номер только для того, чтобы, если мальчишка перестанет воображать, мог связаться и признаться наконец. Тот всё тихо на ушко майору твердил про птиц да богов, а всем остальным говорил, что видел лишь мальчишек, да и то мельком, видите ли был слишком занят рисованием.

Страннее всего в сложившейся ситуации было даже не то, что из всех телефонов мира, мальчик решил позвонить именно ему, Косте. Ведь их должны учить номерам экстренных служб, а Костя даже не пожарник, может будь иначе он бы понял. Странным было то, что, когда они с группой, вслед за пожарными, доехали до места, вокруг снова собрались те поганые птицы, про которых упрямо твердил мальчишка. Вороны. Тогда, на пляже, их было с десяток, кружили, высматривали что-то тут и там. Сейчас, нед детским домом "Радуга", их кружила сотня минимум.

Здание приюта, наполовину состаящее из сухого, гнилого местами, дерева горело быстро. Разгорелось, по словам пожарных, за считанные минуты. Прямо перед высоким забором из железных крашеных в голубой прутьев стояли два малька. Рыжик, Серёжа Разумовский тот и друг его, Волков Олег. В осенней одежде, заправлены, как будто не в срочном порядке из окна первого этажа выскакивали, руки в саже, брюки Серёжи в травяных с грязью разводах, будто на колени упал. Смотрят своими огромными озлобленными глазами, как при первой встрече, и стоят спиной к огню.

У Разумовского глаза никогда не были жёлтыми. Голубые, как у матери - написано в документах, ярко васильковые, как решил для себя Костя. Но ни как не ярко, чуть ли не ярче огня, жёлтые..

Когда детей уже осмотрели работники "скорой" Косте с Федей предстояло их опросить. Судя по всему, больше из выживших никого. Пожарные то и дело выносили из уже, можно сказать, потушенного, здания трупы.

Те лишь смотрели в сторону догоревшего дома и улыбались. Злыми, падальшичьими улыбками, будто и не те милые маленькие бесята на редких совместных фотографиях, а дьяволы настоящие. Костя в бесов не верит, у него и так злодеев полным полно, но вороны всё кружили, а в глазах одного из детей то и дело возгорался жёлтый, не от огня отнюдь, огонёк.
