It’s time that I post some art I did for the @rise-fashion-zine “Style on the Rise”! This is the artwork I did in collaboration with @fanfic-inator795 for her lovely piece involving Mikey’s accessories. These were very fun to do, and I had a great time working with Andrea, who is a wonderful writer and person!

We need to talk

I recently posted my latest “The Brains and The Brawn” comic page the other day. I was feeling really awesome about it and got lots of wonderful feedback! It made me feel very happy, and I was happy to finally bring a new page to you!

Then today I got this as a comment on the page:

And beyond this being just very rude, it made me realize that I really need to have a talk with you guys.

Because this isn’t the first time I’ve gotten something to this effect. It may not always have been this rude, but I have gotten dozens of comments of this nature asking something to the effect of “when will we see the next page?”

To reiterate from a section in another post where I talked about this in brief, I really DO NOT like these kinds of asks/comments. They make me feel stressed and ashamed and pressured, which can create negative feelings around my work and make me less likely to finish them. I get that you’re excited, and that’s cool. But literally no one likes those kinds of comments.

First of all, a big reason why I have not given myself a set schedule for my Rise comics is because I did not want the pressure of a consistent deadline at a time when I don’t know if I can hold a deadline. To be perfectly candid, I’ve been recovering from a frankly very mentally stressful scenario, which I do not want to get into here.

Second of all, my recent slow-down in frequency of comics is because I’ve been trying to get my life back in order and get an in-real-life job. I’d been living overseas for the past 6 years, and coming back to my home country amidst a pandemic while also dealing with the previously mentioned mentally stressful scenario has not been easy. I’m also juggling doing my own projects with doing commissions for people, and I will of course prioritize something that I am actually paid to do.

And MOST importantly: I shouldn’t have to provide a reason for the frequency of my updates to begin with!

I’m fine with explaining a little bit about my situation, but not everyone has the means to do so. You don’t know what different people are going through. Myself and other online creatives are often creating content for free, and do not have to answer to someone asking for more content at a pace that may not be reasonable for them. Making comics is hard work! I render everything from the characters to the backgrounds myself, and that takes a lot of time! And that is in between everything going on in my daily life which you don’t see much of because you don’t have any right to!

I make my comics for myself, and I can easily block someone if all they are going to add to my day is some passive aggressive nonsense like this. Unless you are literally paying me through a commission, I do not make art for you. I make it for me.

And because a friend of mine said it so much better, here is a link to some nice guidelines on how to respond to a creative whose work you are excited to see more of without being rude about it.

To repeat, you don’t know what different people are going through. Creatives have lives outside of their online presence. Try to think before you comment and remember that you are talking to a human being, not an art-creating-machine.

Ah, yes! The Mikey-centric comic I have planned for after BnB will be called “Family Portrait”.  I can’t tell too much about it, because spoilers. But the premise is basically this:

When Mikey creates a portrait of his brothers using mystic paint, strange things begin to happen in the lair, and an odd affliction starts affecting his brothers...

My main goal for this comic is to analyze Mikey as a character and challenge his ideas of positivity and emotions. And also because I want Mikey to have the spotlight for a change

A secret santa I did for @clankclunk based on a scene from their wonderful story “Forget the mess I’m in.” It’s one of my favorite Mikey-centric stories and you should totally read it!

WOW That's great, wonderful Jade !!! I don't know if this post is considered for you as a small interview or as a behind the scenes presentation of Once Human Au ... but I must say that the way you wrote the "story" of the project and these details about the characters, made your new project even more interesting. I feel like I am waiting for the new season of a series that you gladly watch with PASSION !!!!!! I CAN'T LOOK AT THE TIME YOU ARE FANTASTIC !!!!!!! <3 <3 <3

For your upcoming Once Human au, what was your process for designing each of the turtles, like choosing their species, their weapons, and their ages? Your au looks really interesting and unlike most fan reinterpretations of the tmnt I've seen and I can't wait to know more about it!

Ooooh, this is such a good question! To be honest, the design process was really difficult for me at first!

I had very fleshed out ideas for their personalities, dynamics, development, and especially, backstory! But I had very little in mind for what they looked like, haha!

So in designing the turtles, I tried to pick weapons, species, and looks while keeping their backstories in mind, but still put a focus on who they are now.

For weapons, I thought a lot about fight styles, looked up a bunch of Japanese weapons, and videos demonstrating their uses, trying to picture each of the characters using them, and picking the ones that I thought fit best.

Picking species was a bit harder because I wanted to keep in mind a few things:

The species’ function/abilities - for example picking a loggerhead turtle for Raph since they have the toughest turtle shells, and I thought that made sense for the team tank

The color scheme - for example picking a black pond turtle to give Donnie a space-and-stars look to fit with their sci-fi theme

Endangered species - all of the turtles and Splinter are endangered species. This didn’t really have a lot to do with their personality or anything, but I like including a bit of environmental awareness in my art and stories if/when I can

For their ages, I kind of just went with my gut and picked what I thought would create interesting character dynamics. Leo is often the oldest brother, so I was curious to see what he’d be like as the youngest. I made Raph and Donnie the same age because there are so few instances of the two of them having lots of interactions in the canon. I want to change that for this iteration, and making them the same age seemed like a good way to do that. Mikey is the middle child to further push the idea that he is the balance of the team.

Oh, and one more character design note - I took a page out of Rise of the TMNT’s book and thought about shape language. I wanted their general body type and shapes to reflect their personalities. So Mikey is all round and friendly, Leo’s plastron and armor is sharp and angular, Donnie’s design contains stiff and blocky shapes, and Raph is large and smooth with his plastron and shell looking like a shield.

dianounais I agree with you very much! I always wished Mikey was more than the prankster of the group and not considered the turtle who has all the looks and characteristics of a classic fun teen. Don't break me guys I like you Mikey that way he's always been my favorite antripomorph animal ... after Usagi Yojimbo. But as you wrote, I always thought that he could be so much more (as if in the future he could become a great teacher like Splinter) and become mature, responsible but keep his positivity and support which helps a lot has to keep his more united and cheerful family. Sorry jade and dianounais I was too long and detailed especially he has to write at this time of the evening eh eh eh. But I hope you both appreciate my sincere opinion. Ok your Once human au is so so cool, I love the designs and the new weapons AND I love that you made mikey the leader!!! My boy doesnt often get the character development he deserves and is often just the "funny guy" but like hes more than that!!! So thanks for giving him an important role!!! Its really cool!! Also splinter looks like the kind of dad every body wants akdbsjfkejfjj anyway have a nice day!

I have a lot planned for Mikey! I wanted to take other versions of Mikey’s personality and use stuff like their positivity and their moral compass as a driving force for plot! I think that there’s a lot of potential in his character to be leader-like, it’s just never used as such.

Similarly with Splinter, I took a lot of the aspects of other iterations’ Splinters and took the parts I like to make my own ultimate dad-Splinter!

Great idea to ask us for requests for comics or fanart ORIGINAL AND ADORABLE !!!! I would have one, I know it's not very detailed but I care. I would like a small comic, I have as big as you can or want, that talks about Mickey and how much he cares and loves his brothers and his father Splinter. The style I imagine is that he wants to protect them at any cost and that he gives emotions, brotherly love and fatherly love. I imagine the scenario similar to a fanfiction that I have read and reread (because it is a touching story, exciting with drama but has a beautiful happy ending) and I hope you like it too.

I’m a bit late with this, but mostly because I wanted to get the right words out and to think of a proper way to show my gratitude to all of you who have followed my blog. I’ve had a rough year (likely we all have), but since I started posting on here and having all of you be so wonderful with supporting me and giving me feedback has really made it so much better! The other way that I think would be an appropriate way to say “thank you” is with requests! So I’m temporarily opening up my ask box for requests. BUT since there are over 1000 of you, we’re going to make this a raffle of sorts. So there are RULES.

I will be RANDOMLY picking 5-10 requests (depending on my motivation and number of requests) and use a random number generator to choose them. I will also include a link to the requester’s blog and reblog one of their posts that I like and say something nice about it.

Aww thank you so much! I’m so glad you like the idea! I don’t have any fanfiction or comics planned for it at all. It was mostly just a fun design challenge that I wanted to do.

But if you or anyone else wants to use the designs or ideas for your own art/writing, I’d be happy to let you do that as long as you mention me or link it back to me (mostly because I’d love to see what anyone else does with them).

Maybe if I get inspired again, I’ll do something, but for now it was a fun idea to bring to life. I’m really happy for the positive reactions to it overall!

RotTMNT x Wakfu

I’ve been watching the Dofus series/movie and my brain couldn’t let this idea go. I’m not sure if there’s a large overlap between Rise fans and Wakfu/Dofus fans and I don’t know how many people will appreciate this crossover idea or understand how fitting this is, but I really wanted to draw the turtle fam if they were the different races/classes in the World of Twelve, so that’s what I did! This was a super fun design challenge and strangely it was this small project that got me motivated to do art for the first time in weeks. So I’m excited to show it to the maybe 2 people who will appreciate this crossover XD

Leo the Eliatrope - Eliatropes are a powerful race known for their portal magic and for being linked with dragons. They’re often seen zipping around the battlefield. They even have markings on their faces and bodies that glow when they use their magic that are similar to Leo’s markings. I imagine that Leo mostly uses his portals for pranks and mischief though.

Mikey the Ecaflip - Often relying on their supernatural luck, Ecaflips are very unpredictable and somewhat chaotic. Basically, Mikey being a lucky cat-person made too much sense. Also, an fairly prominent Ecaflip character is shown fighting with nunchaku and fire in the Dofus movie, so that fit Michelangelo’s battle style as well.

Raph the Iop - Iop’s are an honorable warrior class who value their companions and are always up for a battle. Their motto and general battle tactic is “act before you think” and I think that fits Raph practically perfectly. Iops usually use swords over most weapons, but Raph can be unique and keep his tonfas.

Donnie the Foggernaut - Foggernauts are sea-faring technomages who prefer science over magic and enhance their body with their tech, and if that’s not Donnie, I don’t know what is.

April the Huppermage - April always did seem to be interested in witches and now she gets to be one! Huppermages are powerful magic-users and form weapons out of light and energy. I had to give April her signature bat.

Splinter the Enutrof - All Enutrofs look like short, stocky elderly people, so I just had to make rat-Splinter not a rat anymore and give him a shovel and he’s an Enutrof (and also looks kinda like a chibi version of Iroh). Enutrofs are miserly treasure hunters, and tend to be rather secretive about their past and personal lives and it’s that last part which made me think of Splinter.

WONDERFUL ANSWER !!! Even if I haven't written the question, I will look forward to this creative impact! It will be WONDERFUL I KNOW!

Do you mind if I ask you about real boy Shelldon? because I love him and I want to know more. Like did he have to learn how to walk because his drone form didn't have legs, and is he super affectionate or does a lot of touch overwhelm him because the his senses are way different. Just any headcanons you have, because I love this boy.

Oh these are exciting questions! I do have a lot of ideas for Real Boy Shelldon, many of which I plan on making art or comics for. But I’ll be happy to share some of my headcanons and ideas of him!

RealBoy! Shelldon Headcannons:

Shelldon's favorite pizza is Hawaiian.

It takes him some time to get used to his new biological body. He has some trouble learning to walk and move around properly at first. Things like hunger and pain are also new to him.

For a while he gets overwhelmed by experiencing so many new sensations in general. Breathing, having a heartbeat, sounds, smells, touch, feelings – all of which he suddenly has to process in new ways other than in ones an zeros - can be a bit much at times.

He does like hugs though and often needs his family around to help ground him.

Shelldon gets along best with Mikey since they are the same "age" and maturity level. They like hanging out, playing video games, and skateboarding together. They also get into a lot of hijinks and trouble together – they are terrible influences on one another.

Mikey is excited to finally have a "little brother" (in age only, Shelldon is actually quite tall).

Shelldon is more than happy to give his immediate "older brother" a ride on his shoulders.

He loves experimenting with food and creating weird food combinations. Pizza in a blender? Yup! All the random pizza toppings found in the '87 show? Of course! Hot sauce on ice cream? Delicious!

He often goes on missions with Raph, but gets distracted by things really easily and gets caught up in doing his own stuff, so most of the time they're really unproductive.

He and Donnie bond over Jupiter Jim films and their love of Atomic Lass.

Regarding his drone parts:

He still has his rotors to fly with in the back of his shell.

Despite having a soft shell, Shelldon likes keeping his back unobstructed so that he can use his rotors at anytime. He'll only wear hoodies or loose clothing when he feels comfortable and safe.

His robotic eye has night-vision, and can see outside the normal color spectrum like UV and infrared.

He can communicate with computers a bit. There is a notch in the back of his head that can be used to connect wires to for him to communicate with computers or provide access to the computer side of his brain.

He can occasionally pick up radio signals as well (which can also be a bit overwhelming at times).

He can also suffer from small technological issues like computer viruses and short-circuits (but it'd mostly just make him sleepy and a bit loopy since he still has his bio-brain to compensate).

The mutation managed to fit together his bio-body with his computer body pretty effectively, so he doesn't even need to "recharge" with electricity, and can just use his normal body energy (from food and such) to fuel his technological bits.

He thus has to eat a lot.

Overall, Shelldon is pretty open to going with the flow and trying new things, there's lots of new stuff to do now that he is alive.

Do you mind if I ask you about real boy Shelldon? because I love him and I want to know more. Like did he have to learn how to walk because his drone form didn't have legs, and is he super affectionate or does a lot of touch overwhelm him because the his senses are way different. Just any headcanons you have, because I love this boy.

Oh these are exciting questions! I do have a lot of ideas for Real Boy Shelldon, many of which I plan on making art or comics for. But I’ll be happy to share some of my headcanons and ideas of him!

RealBoy! Shelldon Headcannons:

Shelldon's favorite pizza is Hawaiian.

It takes him some time to get used to his new biological body. He has some trouble learning to walk and move around properly at first. Things like hunger and pain are also new to him.

For a while he gets overwhelmed by experiencing so many new sensations in general. Breathing, having a heartbeat, sounds, smells, touch, feelings – all of which he suddenly has to process in new ways other than in ones an zeros - can be a bit much at times.

He does like hugs though and often needs his family around to help ground him.

Shelldon gets along best with Mikey since they are the same "age" and maturity level. They like hanging out, playing video games, and skateboarding together. They also get into a lot of hijinks and trouble together – they are terrible influences on one another.

Mikey is excited to finally have a "little brother" (in age only, Shelldon is actually quite tall).

Shelldon is more than happy to give his immediate "older brother" a ride on his shoulders.
