What if Merlin wasn’t supposed to be immortal.

We know he can do magic subconsciously, he states that he was making things float around the room before he could talk. He is literally magic incarnate.

What if it was what Kilgarah said that made him immortal. What if Kilgarah was wrong, but since he told Merlin that Arthur was supposed to return Merlin never died. What if Arthur was never supposed return. So Merlin will wait. He will wait until humanity is nothing more than dust buried in the dirt. Arthur will never return, but by telling Merlin that Arthur would, Kilgarah cursed Merlin to wait.

Merlin will never leave, never let go no matter how long has passed. His hope may dwindle as the millennial pass, but it never dies. He stays on the off chance that if he does come back, he will need his servent. Arthur never could last long without him.

So he waits. Never aging. Never letting go. A false hope given by a manipulative old dragon, but…

There are very few things in modern media that hit me quite as hard as the episode of BBC Merlin “Sins of the Father”, when Bradley James as Prince Arthur Pendragon delivers this line in his confrontation with Uther:

Gives me goosebumps every damn time. Exceptional acting right there by Bradley James. Our boy deserved all the BAFTAs for that scene.

Low-key feel bad for Arthur lol. Imagine being raised as the crown prince so your ego is like huge but also you have no self-esteem bc your dad sucks, and you meet this strange dude who tries to fight you but he saves your life and becomes your servant.

And he's just like your funny little dude that you have to toss behind a tree every time bandits show up, and he's not that great at servant-ing but he's your best friend so you'll do anything to protect him. He's always right there and it's easy to take him for granted sometimes, he's just like a part of you. He can't walk in a straight line and taking him for hunts is a fools errand. You tease him for being an idiot but he's actually pretty wise.

Then you find out he's the most powerful person on earth and in all of time. Some people consider him a god, he has a hidden name, he can mind-control dragons and he's supposed to help you bring about a new age. Your life is a tv show named after him and you're role in it is being the funny little idiot he has to keep safe-
