Sigh No More  “The Cave”

Author’s Note: This one was a bit hard to write. I hope you all like it, please send feedback or requests or anything! I am very happy with this project though and I encourage you guys to listen to the songs while reading. Love!

Track one can be found here

______________________________________________________________________

Track Two:

“So tie me to a post and block my ears/I can see widows and orphans through my tears/I know my call despite my faults/And despite my growing fears/But I will hold on hope/And I won’t let you choke/On the noose around your neck /And I’ll find strength in pain/And I will change my ways/I’ll know my name as it’s called again”

Grunting.

Sweating.

Heat building inside him as he took out every aggression on the punching bag in front of him. The gym was empty this early in the morning and he took every opportunity to cleanse himself of his nightmares before the dawning of a new day. Tony had been kind enough to provide the super soldiers with extremely strong, reinforced punching bags, giving them the ability to train at length without them bursting.

His mind barraged him with scattered memories, most of them half-truths or warped recounts of who he was before. Before…, he thought to himself, the word always lingering on the edge of his consciousness, Back when I was worthy, back when I was normal, back when I knew what it meant to be James Barnes.

His fists pummeled the bag as faces began swirling around his psyche. Some held fear, some held disgust, some held awe, but all had one thing in common: distrust. That was what he was the most tired of, all the distrust. Even Steve, who seemed to be the only one who considered him human always hid apprehension behind his eyes, as if Bucky was a bomb just building toward explosion.

Suddenly, the faces changed. No longer were these the images of people he knew; now they were the faceless figures of those he’d hurt. Bucky had heard plenty of stories of the crimes he’d committed, each one swept away by HYDRA. He could feel their anger, sense their fear, and taste their sadness in the back of his throat. And it was all because of him. The full force of his self-loathing hit him in that moment, fueling his punches and causing an involuntary growl to rip through him. His face felt damp, though he couldn’t tell if it was from sweat or tears.

Then, a sound behind him. He whipped around without thinking, the soldier’s instincts within him causing his muscles to tense, ready to fight.

But it was only Y/N. She stood in the doorway, all messy hair and bleary eyes, looking so small wrapped in a blanket. Her cheeks were red and she looked as if she’d been crying.

“Bucky, I-” she started, before swallowing a sob, “I had a nightmare and you weren’t in your room and-”

She was cut off by his embrace. Both arms held her tightly now, fear of his metal limb gone at the sight of her duress. She pressed her face into him and let her tears flow freely as her blanket fell from her bare shoulders. He knew she’d been tortured horribly by a terrorist group prior to his arrival and he’d often found himself fantasizing about what he’d do if he ever found the men who’d hurt her.

“It was just the same dream as always. I’m sorry for reacting like this but I couldn’t find you and my mind got the best of me and-,” she sighed with frustration, “I’m sorry for being so weak all the time.”

Confusion tinged his vision as he pulled away to look at her. Here was this person who had been through more than anyone could imagine, be it rage or pain or unbridled loss, and still chose to believe in the goodness of the world. Often, he would catch her simply smiling to herself, his presence unknown as she silently thanked the universe for its gifts with the beautiful upturn of her lips. Though Bucky knew his circumstances differed, he still looked to her when he needed proof of joy or an infusion of hope toward his unyielding future. These feelings, he knew, could easily atrophy after such a hard existence, yet she kept them strong through sheer force of will and the refusal to let her life get the best of her. He knew in his heart that she was anything but weak.

“Y/N,” he started, pausing to brush the hair out of her eyes, “You are not weak. After everything you’ve been through, you’re one of the strongest people I know.”

He felt his response terribly inadequate but knew he must have done something right when a faint smile touched her lips.

“Still, I really am sorry for bothering you like this,” she sighed shakily, “I know how much this time means to you.”

Her eyes searched his face for any sign of resentment, though she found nothing but concern. He pulled her in gently, letting her head fall on the skin of his human shoulder as he rubbed soothing circles into the tense muscles of her back.

“This is more important than any training,” he reassured, “Trust me.”

Her hands snaked their way around his neck, pulling him even closer.

“I do,” she replied simply, relishing the soft touch of his hair at her fingertips, “I do trust you.”

The full force of her words struck him sharply, leaving him dazed and unsteady. She trusts me? He turned the thought over in his mind, considering her proclamation from every angle. As he mused on the possibility of her feelings toward him, she sighed contentedly into his shoulder, nuzzling the scarred skin she found there. He felt how vulnerable she was in his arms, both physically and emotionally, and he wanted to push her away, to tell her that she deserved more than a beast like him, to give her to someone who could protect her from the Winter Soldier lying dormant inside of him.

But he knew he wouldn’t do that. He knew, as he led her to his room where she’d inevitably fall asleep wrapped in his protective embrace, that as long as he lived he could never allow another man the privilege of waking up next to her in the morning or the comfort of catching her smiling at him from across a crowded room. He also knew that he should feel selfish in wanting her all to himself, but he had a sense that that’s exactly how she wanted it too.

As they climbed into his warm bed, he couldn’t help but wonder where the abundant self-loathing he’d been fixated on only minutes earlier had disappeared to and he marveled at the way her touch soothed him even as he worked to comfort her. He knew as she snuggled closer into his grasp that he would never let his past dictate him as he was now responsible for something more than just himself. She trusted him and that was enough of a reason to keep on existing, if only to hear her laugh or feel her tense muscles relax as she fell asleep against him once again.

Worth It - Bucky Barnes

image

Reader and Bucky have been dating for a long time, but the reader is not very emotional. One night, when they fight because she wants to go on a mission with him and the rest of the team, Bucky says he loves and cares too much to risk losing her and she just says “I’m not sure if I can say the same.”. In the mission, she gets seriously injured when take a shot for Bucky know she will not survive, Bucky begins to blame himself and she just cuts “Bucky, I love you. It’s worth it die for you.”

N/A: Okay, i hope that you like it! And thank you for your request!!

(Masterlist)

You weren’t good at expressing your feelings, you just didn’t have great examples of romantic emotion - or any kind of cute emotion from romance movies - it was as if all your life, until the moment you met Bucky, you lived like a damn robot. But then you created an interest in the charming Barnes and all officially began after a meeting at Steve’s house, where you, the two super soldiers and Sam drank too much. Fortunately for you, Sam and Steve drank to the point of not remembering the night and especially your moans that Bucky proudly caused. You didn’t know what or how you managed it, but then you two started dating, Bucky always being a precious soft ball to the point of you got along extremely well. He understood you extremely well. You really complemented each other and you felt glad that he didn’t require emotions you didn’t know how or felt comfortable in trying to express. Everything seemed perfect during the long months of relationship… Until now.

“You can’t be fucking serious!" you growled angry, raising your hands in frustration and glancing at Bucky. “You can’t do this! I’m not a fucking property. Especially your property!”

“You have to understand that this mission is dangerous, (Y/N)! You’re not coming, period.“ Bucky said through clenched teeth, his body language in full defensive position like a wolf waiting to pounce.

“Fuck that shit! If I have to electrocute you to be able to go through that damn door, I will.” you simmered, starting to focus on the electrical charge on the tips of your fingers and you saw Bucky’s eyes stare for a few seconds your hands before relaxing his posture. “Good, now let me pass.”

“(Y/N), please, I just… Dammit, this mission is really complicated and dangerous! I care about you, worry about your safety and don’t want to risk losing you.” Bucky ran his flesh hand on his now short hair, a pure anxiety gesture, his voice now controlled and you could feel the emotions he tried not to show it, but you could see through his blue eyes. “I love you, (Y/N).”

“I’m not sure if I can say the same.” you said coldly, keeping your expression blank and, trying to avoid Bucky’s hurt look, you took the time to pass through him and head toward the quinjet where the others waited.

Shit. Your surprise attack had gone awry, Bruce lost control after a guard shoot his direction and so the mission went in a complete chaos. There were many soldiers and machines to fight at the same time, the whole team was split into the huge warehouse that seemed like almost a maze. Shit. You managed to get rid quickly of the machines thanks to your power, doing the same with the soldiers that appeared, then you fled to the top of the wall that created that damn maze. Your eyes searched for the members of your team as your heart almost pounded in your ear. Shit. Who were you trying to fool? Your eyes looked worryingly for Bucky and when you found him, you didn’t think twice about going to him. And then you noticed one of the machines appear behind Bucky and aim at the back of his head. You didn’t stop to think or wait to see if he would notice, you just threw yourself in front of the machine while it fired several times in your direction. For a moment you lost your breath and felt your eyes roll back as you fell with a heavy thud on the floor.

“(Y/N)!” you heard Bucky scream and you forced yourself to open your eyes that you didn’t remember having closed. Bucky knelt beside you, taking you in his arms and trying to stop your bleeding, but the front of your white uniform was getting completely stained red. “No, no, no! My love, hold on! Doll, keep your eyes open!”

“James-” you choked slightly trying to breathe, leading your trembling hand to the face of the man you had learned many important things. Bucky closed his eyes for a moment trying to control the tears, but quickly returned to look at you when he felt your heart beat increasingly weak, he hugged you with affection and sobbed heavy. “James Barnes, I love you. Don’t cry- Die for you… it’s worth it. ”

“I love you too, doll” Bucky whispered, but you didn’t hear his answer. And he stayed there with you in his arms, his body shaking as he cried his pain. Nothing would be worth it if you weren’t coming home with him. You should have heard him.

Bones (Bucky x Reader)

Request: Can I have a Bucky x reader where they are married and he comes home after a long mission to see her in the kitchen cleaning and she runs and hugs him because she missed him so much that she starts crying. He notices that’s she scarily skinny and pale (like Steve used to be when he was sick). So he asks her if she’s sick as she says “I don’t sleep or eat when you aren’t here because I’m afraid HYDRA will get you again and I can’t live without you.” And him comforting her and just lots of fluff😘

Words: 1,085

Warnings: Mentions of starving yourself

You had been putting it off for weeks now. It was something you had been dreading to do, even though you told yourself that it would get done. You thought that since you liked to keep yourself busy while Bucky was away on missions that cleaning the kitchen would be something that would’ve gotten done in only days of him gone. But of course, you procrastinated doing it and filled your schedule with other tasks, like shopping on Amazon or binge watching Grace and Frankie.

You woke up this morning with no plans of cleaning kitchen, once again, but after you walked past the kitchen and realized what a disaster it had become, you decided it was best to throw on your sweats and grab the cleaning supplies. It was shameful how messy it was, after all the baking you did you just didn’t feel like cleaning up.

You baked for everybody. You baked cupcakes for Nat, cakes for Tony, doughnut balls for Thor, cookies for Clint, cake pops for Sam, brownies for Steve, pies for Bruce, you baked everything for everybody. But not yourself.

No, you simply just didn’t have time to eat, you were filled up on anxiety worrying about Bucky. Sure, you’ve gotten a little thin but nothing to worry about. You occasionally had a bite of cookie dough, every once and awhile.

Baking took your mind off things and it was a great pass time, it could kill a whole afternoon. Your friends didn’t mind, they enjoyed all the yummy treats that would show up at their homes out of the blue, although they worried about your sudden interest in baking, they never mentioned it to you.

You finally worked up the courage to shove on your cleaning gloves that went up to your elbows and blast your favorite Pandora station as you started cleaning the kitchen of horror.

Father!Bucky Barnes x Mother!Reader

Words: 1,089

You ran and ran, trying to gain as much speed as you could but it never seemed enough. They were too far off, their figures just blurry masses all-too-quickly mixing. You had to get to them, you needed to get to them, but…. “Bucky! (S/N)!” You called out, hoping your husband would turn around, or just stop. He had to stop, he had to! You tried to speed up your running but your legs were tiring, muscles screaming to stop yourself but you wouldn’t. You needed to get to them. Please! Bucky! (S/N)! Please… Their figures, already just black, blurry masses against the bright background, slowly disappeared before they were gone completely-…

“What happened, Y/N?” Steve asked for the second time as I looked through the small window that was in the kitchen. Beth was sleeping as Bucky. Or that was what I imagined because I hadn’t seen him around the house.

The truth was, I preferred it that way. After the conversation we’d had the night before, I didn’t want to see him or talk to him. In five years a lot of things had happened and although my feelings for him hadn’t changed, and they never would, his feelings for me did. Maybe I had made a mistake in the way I acted but I didn’t regret what I had done. As much as he said otherwise, Bucky wasn’t prepared to have a daughter and I couldn’t allow a person with a mental instability to be around her.

“If you don’t tell us what’s happening, we cannot help you.”

“It’s not as if you could help be being thousands of miles away, Steve” I spat. I knew I had been cold as soon as the words left my mouth. I pinched the bridge of my nose as I apologized. “I’m nervous. I didn’t know what to expect when I came here but I didn’t expect Bucky hating me.”

“You didn’t give him more options, Y/N. You left with his daughter. Whatever your reasons were, you left with a part of him. You can’t blame him for holding a grudge.

I hated that Steve was right because it made me rethink my actions.

“Don’t explain me what happened if you don’t want to, but explain it to someone. You can’t keep this inside of you forever.”

The conversation with Steve hadn’t gone how neither of us expected. He had called with the intention to discover what had happened with Martin and I had hoped he was calling to tell me he was coming home so I didn’t have to stay at Bucky’s.

I left the phone on the counter and I sighed. What was I going to do? How long would I have to stay with Bucky? When would I know it was safe to go? Was I going to have to move to another state, leave all my friends and family behind?

“Good mo–”

I tilted my head, meeting Bucky in the kitchen entrance with messy hair, with his blue eyes with traces of sleep and a with a frown. I followed the trajectory of his eyes to my right rib. The black tank top I was wearing had gotten up slightly, revealing the big bruise I had. I covered it with my shirt and I looked at Bucky with a fake smile.

“Coffee?”

“What is that?” he asked as he walked towards me.

I tried to pull away but Bucky grabbed my arm with his metal hand and lifted my shirt with the other. The touch of his fingers made a shiver ran through my spine, preventing me to breath normally.

“Tell me this isn’t the reason why you are here.”

I didn’t answer him and although I could have lied, I followed Steve’s advice. One day or another I would have to explain to someone what had happened with Martin.

“Son of a bitch,” he muttered. “Beth. Did he touch Beth?”

I shook my head. “I would have never allowed it. So he hit me.”

Bucky pressed his jaw tightly. He dropped my shirt and, for a moment, I thought he would hit something but he restrained himself.

“How many times?”

I was afraid to answer that question. From the outside, it all seemed very easy. If someone hit you, you had to leave as quickly as possible. But when it happened to you, you always expected a change.

“My answer will not change anything,” I finally answered. “You probably have a lot of things to say, like how stupid I was for being with someone like that. I know, you don’t need to tell me.”

“I wasn’t going to say anything,” Bucky said. “But that doesn’t mean I don’t think it.”

Bucky walked past me and picked up the coffee pot, thereby giving and end to the conversation. And, again, we were in an impasse, having nothing to say to each other.

I had to leave as soon as possible. Staying at Bucky’s was a danger for both of us because, at one time or another, we might explode. Too many feelings. To many things left unsaid.

Beth appeared in the kitchen before I could leave. Her brown hair was messy and her blue eyes half closed.

“Good morning, sweetheart. Did you sleep well?” I asked her as I picked her up and kissed her forehead. I felt Bucky’s eyes looking at us.

Beth nodded, she wasn’t very talkative in the morning. I left her on the floor and I asked her what she wanted for breakfast but she didn’t answer, probably because she hadn’t decided yet what her belly wanted. Finally, she decided she wanted a glass of milk and a muffin. Bucky took the moment to announce he was going to take a shower and my body relaxed instantly.

As she drank her glass of milk, I observed my daughter. If it wasn’t because she had my nose and my lips, I would have thought Beth was only Bucky’s daughter. It was his living image. I assumed that, for that reason, I still hadn’t forgotten about him. They were two drops of water; both were brave, determined and, sometimes, stubborn.

“Mommy, can I ask you something?”

I nodded as a smile appeared on my lips.

“Why does Bucky have a metal arm?”

“So you remember that one day I told you that we all had something that made us special?” Beth nodded. “The metal arm is what makes Bucky special. It allows him to be super strong. And he can lift anything with that arm!”

Beth opened her mouth, surprised and I laughed. Now that Bucky was in her life, I had to start answering questions.

“Can we go to the zoo, mommy?”

I gasped, not knowing what to say. Could we leave the house? I didn’t know if Martin was looking for me, as I didn’t know what the limits of that situation were.

When Beth saw I didn’t answer right away, she grew anxious. She looked at me intently and shifted in her seat, ready to explode if I said no. Kids, so adorable when they had what they wanted but so unbearable when they didn’t.

“I can take you to the zoo if you want.”

I lifted my head, finding Bucky leaned against the kitchen door, with his arms crossed over his chest and staring at me, as Beth had done seconds earlier. I could say no and end all that, and I could say yes and accept to spend a day with Bucky. Although it wasn’t what I wanted, I realized maybe Bucky wanted to spend a day with his daughter so I raised my arms in defeat and I said yes.

Beth screamed with excitement, got up from her chair, and came to hug me. She did the same with Bucky, who was stunned when Beth wrapped her small arms around him. And, as usual when she got excited, she started to speak quickly, tripping over her own words and making a plan of what they would see.

As I expected, the day at the zoo was exhausting but it was worth to see Beth enjoying so much. She ran back and forth, pointing to all the animals and making people laugh. At first, she was a bit shy with Bucky but when she saw I was getting tired, she took on of his hands and started running with him. And he was delighted with that.

A strange feeling ran through me when I saw them together and my mind flew to a place where it was forbidden to go since I had left his side five years ago.

How our life would have been if I had stayed with Bucky? I would have been scared twenty-four hours a day, as I was now. Steve had told me he had made a lot of progress, that the Winter Soldier hadn’t appeared for a long time. But Bucky was the Winter Soldier and if for some reason someone recited the ten magic words, we were in danger. Including Beth.

By mid afternoon, we decided to sit on a bench to eat ice cream. When Beth finished hers, she fell asleep on Bucky’s. He smiled softly as she took a few strands of hair from her forehead. After a few minutes in silence, Bucky ended the day by announcing that maybe it was better to leave.

Beth slept the whole way and when they reached Bucky’s apartment, Bucky asked if he could put her to bed. Although a part of me didn’t want to, I knew I had to start trusting Bucky. Like it or not, Bucky was her father and was now in her life.

“Okay,” I murmured.

Despite knowing I didn’t had to do it, I went to Beth’s room and I observed Bucky putting her in bed. My heart shrank with tenderness when he kissed her forehead and I turned around and I went to the kitchen when I felt the urge to cry.

I was no longer sure if what I did was the right thing to do. Maybe Bucky was right and everything that had happened to me since I had left was because I deserved it.

“I’m exhausted,” Bucky said as he entered the kitchen. I wiped the tears of my eyes and I turned to face him. On his face I could read the word satisfaction. He was satisfied, happy.

“She’s an earthquake,” I said.

“She’s like you,” he pointed out in a whisper as he opened the fridge and grabbed a bottle of beer. I watched him for a few seconds in silence. “I’m sorry for what I told you the other day. Clearly I didn’t know what had happened. I would never think you deserved what he did to you.”

Hear those words didn’t help me. Maybe he didn’t think so but I had started to believe it.

“Beth thinks he is her father?”

By his tone, I knew he was afraid of the answer. From the beginning, I had thought of telling Beth that Martin wasn’t his real father but after thinking that would only bring me unceasing questions, I decided not to tell her the truth. At the end of the day, I thought Martin would be the one.

“Yes,” I finally replied. Bucky clenched his jaw. “I know what I have to do but I need time. Beth is a child and… I need time, Bucky.”

“Okay,” he answered surprising me.

He finished his beer and before leaving the kitchen, he said: “You can stay as long as you need. Tomorrow I’ll talk to Tony so he controls that guy.”

“Scott. Martin Scott,” I said offering him a name. “Thank you, Bucky.”

Bucky smiled slightly and left the kitchen, leaving me alone with my thoughts. How was I supposed to tell Beth the truth? How she would react? I was afraid of her reaction. Afraid that she hated me for lying to her. Just… Afraid.

Wow

A list of things Steve Rogers would historically be unfamiliar with:

I fell down a rabbit hole of research about inventions circa the 40s and was surprised by a bunch of things that have been around way longer than I thought and some that are strangely reccent, and compiled them into a list. Aka, a resource for fic writers.

Bananas (or rather, the ones we have today. The ones he’d be accustomed to, the Gros Michel, a sweeter, creamier species, went extinct in the 50s and was replaced with the bland Cavendish banana.)

High-fives (the low-five was actually invented first, around WW2, and he may have been familiar with that)

Buffalo Wings (invented in the 60s)

CPR (not really used until the late 40s, not widely known until the 50s)

Tiramisu (invented in the 80s)

Big Macs & McNuggets (while McDonald’s was founded in 1940, the former wasn’t introduced until the 60s, and the latter, the 80s)

Seat belts (the first car to have one was in the late 40s, and only became mandatory to wear them in the 80s. holy shit.)

Walmart (invented in 1962. Or really, the large-scale supermarkets as we know them today really)

Yellow tennis balls (prior to the 70s they were usually black or white)

Panadol (first sold in the US in the 50s)

The smiley face aka :) (popularised in the 60s)

Now alternatively, here’s a list of things Steve WOULD (or possibly would) be familiar with:

I’m not sure why some of these surprised me.

Modern Sunglasses (have been around a lot longer than I thought, and were mass produced in the 20s)

Nokia (was first founded in 1865. I’m not kidding. They began as a pulp mill and moved into making rubber respirators for military from the 30s onwards)

Nintendo (been around since 1889 as a toy company, during the 40s they made playing cards. Wouldn’t be implausible that he knew about Nintendo, perhaps from Morita)

Krispy Kreme (opened in 1937, didn’t spread widely until the 50s however)

Kool-Aid (introduced in the 30s)

Oreos (introduced in 1912)

Printed/graphic tees (didn’t become a trend until the 60s-70s, but they certainly existed in the 40s)

Hoodies (originated in the 30s, worn by workers in cold New York warehouses. Meaning, it’s entirely plausible Bucky could’ve been wearing hoodies in the 40s)

Malls (they weren’t called that back then, but they certainly had shopping centres or plazas since the 1800s)

Converse sneakers (invented in 1908 and have barely changed since!)
