I want to write an essay on how the Book of Bill expertly subverts the "villain with a tragic backstory/antisocial protagonist" narrative by portraying its main character as evil, trying really hard to look cool, and failing pathetically. The book is making fun of him, and that is actually kind of revolutionary, because most stories with evil, pathetic main characters tend to take themselves, and by extension, their protagonist, way too seriously, with way too much dignity, which leads to people misinterpreting them as heroes or idealize them in some way, and then replicating these harmful attitudes. They follow life coaches that will teach them how to be "alpha males."

Bill presents himself as one of these "life coaches," he will teach you the secrets of the universe, he will help you to game the system in your favor, to manipulate people to get what you want, he will free you from the shackles of society and reality itself-- but he is lying. The success rate of Bill's evil schemes is laughably small. He's a manipulator, to be sure, an incompetent one. His dimension rejected him, his friends don't actually like him, throughout the ages humans have found him insufferable, and to top it all off he ruins the relationship with the only being in the history of the universe he has ever truly felt understood by.

And instead of going "gee, maybe there *is* something wrong with me, after all" he doubles down on his harmful ideas. He doesn't have a problem, everyone else is the problem. Nobody gets his vision. They are all small-minded creatures of no value. His failures are always somebody else's fault. He didn't want to hurt anyone, he was forced to. It's not that bad, he's just being silly, he's having a laugh.

And we, as readers, we are horrified at all the bad things he does, but we also laugh. Not with him, but *at him.* He is being constantly ridiculed by himself, and the funniest part is that he doesn't even realize. He thinks he is absolutely acing this.

He isn't.

Eventually, it is revealed that Bill has no idea what he is talking about. That he has been defeated, rendered powerless, stuck forever in interdimensional therapy. The book tells us, "This is what happens to people like Bill if they don't change. They end up with nothing. No riches, no fame, no loved ones. They will be unhappy forever unless they realize there is something about them worth changing and decide to act on it."

This is in contrast to Stanford, someone who, just like Bill, was deeply hurt and rejected by society, struggled to feel understood, and took refuge in a narcissistic (bear with me-) view of the world. Diagnostic labels aside, Ford genuinely thinks he is better than everyone else for being smarter. He is a textbook Aspie Supremacist that swears by IQ tests because it's the only thing that has ever validated him. That's why he gets along with Bill, I think, they really *have* compatible mindsets. Ford really thought Rudolph should've killed the other reindeer. He constantly dismisses Fiddleford in what feels a very classist way (even if he grew up working class himself). Ford isn't manipulative and malicious in the same way Bill is, and I don't want anyone coming at me for saying Ford is evil. He isn't. He might be a bit of an ass, but he has a moral code, he knows that what Bill wants to do is A BAD THING and dedicates his life to trying to stop him. Stanford's biggest flaw is not appreciating the people around him more for their inherent value (not that he doesn't love them! he does!), but he learns, and he changes. He is more considerate of other people's needs and their perspectives.

And by the end, he is happy. He is free from Bill, he has his family, people who will support him unconditionally and will put up with his nonsense because they love him.

Stanford will never find someone who is as smart as him, who has been ostracized the same way he has. But that's okay. He has an inherent value as a person that has nothing to do with how smart he is in comparison to other people. He doesn't need other people's approval to be happy.

That is, I think, what the book wants you to take away. Don't be like Bill. Don't fall for the Alpha Male scam, or eugenics, some new age cult or multilevel marketing scheme, reject the ideas at the base. Talk to your family and friends, touch grass, find a group that shares your interests, but don't dwell endlessly on resentment, and don't follow people that tell you that the only way to be valuable is to be "superior" in some abstract metric, and that they can teach you how.

(As a kid, I almost fell down the alt-right pipeline-- and I am Mexican, transgender, and autistic. I fantasized about blowing up the school every day. I know what the fuck I am talking about when I tell you this.)

They are lying. You don't want to be like them.

You don't want to be like Bill.

ok so after bill started getting moody, the therapist was like “oh dw dude ill change into smth more familiar for you” and then i saw a future line out of the corner of my eye of bill having a panic attack, and istg. not fucking joking right now. i had ti take a whole moment away from my screen like “please dont fucking turn into a euclidian— please dont turn into a fucking euclidian…”

hey party people, im about to start working on something (thati think is) really cool

and i wanted to give you guys a lore drop (which i thought of like a week or two ago)

before i forget about this fact entirely (just like what colour micheal’s eyes are)

prepare yourselves, this is a long one, and with that, bone apple teeth! (image unrelated)

So, in the beginning of micheal and bill’s “relationship” (like beginning few years) michael actually had a girlfriend, who had proposed to him, so the two were going to be married in a few weeks.

and bill didn’t like that. that was going to interfere with progress on the portal, which was already shitty because michael had no engineering capabilities whatsoever. (and/or bill was just jealous idk. haven’t decided how he acts in this universe)

so, while michael was sleeping, bill possessed him (because he didn’t know that he could do it while people were awake) and killed her in cold blood… and then prolly had a giggle session or something idk

and since michael was still in the mindscape due to becoming a soul whilst asleep, he had literally no concept of time whatsoever.

that’s relevant information because, bill proceeded to stay in his body for the next 12 days, letting the body rot in his bed, one; because he was too lazy to properly be rid of it, two; so he could actually get some work done on the portal, and three; he thought it would be funny to see michael’s face when he saw his rotting dead wife in his bed knowing it was far to late to save her

actually maybe thats a little too dark… idk…. maybe he wanted to teach him a lesson..?? idk guys.

anyway, you might be asking; how tf is mike so attached to bill after that??? how does he not despise him like ford??

the answer is: he never found out. he doesn’t know it was bill’s doing. and bill’s DEFINITELY not going to tell him now, due to the fact he’s the only one who gives two flying fucks about bill. and micheal just assumed it was due to natural causes and he was just dissociated the whole time, or was in a coma or something. (idk it was 40’s)

michael never had a funeral for her, because holy shit would that be suspicious?? but michael did bury her in his backyard/garden, surrounded by all the flowers she kept.

is probably what he put on her tombstone, which eventually became overgrown when bill’s shenanigans got worse, michael stopped leaving his house/going outside, all the flowers died, and her name was slowly obstructed by moss, vines, and greenery. symbolising the fact that michael was slowly forgetting about her. he was doing this both purposely and subconsciously.

purposely because he didn’t really know how to deal with grief, and he couldn’t really talk to anyone about it because, he didn’t have any friends that he was still in contact with. and obviously he couldn’t talk to bill because, well… its bill. so he just tried to push it down to the back of his mind to forget about it (which worked eventually, only certain trigger words will trigger cloudy memories of her existence, which brings him to tears, though he doesn’t remember/understand why)

subconsciously because by this point he was probably starting to develop Stockholm syndrome, and was getting more obsessed with bill overall, and just kinda… wasn’t thinking about her? (i swear i had more to say here, ill edit this if i think of anything else)

It’s all reliant on if we’re talking about canon Bill or a more fanon version where he’s capable of love. So I’ll write both!

Canon Bill would keep you around more as a plaything than a partner. A trophy, if you will. He’s taken over the world, the Pines were out of his hair, and all he needed now was a prize! And that little prize would be you! 

He will poke, push, and prod every one of your buttons until you give him a reaction. Getting angry towards him won’t do anything for you. It’ll just bring him to provoke you more.

Bill would give his henchmaniacs free rein to torment you as long as no fatal harm comes to your body.

Any privacy you thought you had is nonexistent. There are eyes everywhere. Literally!

Now, there’s another side I could imagine. It's a side that’s nicer but still nowhere near friendly. If you were a possible disciple of his, wanting to help him start the end of the world, you’d be treated slightly better. 

You’d be more like a servant than a trophy. He would give you more freedom in a way. Like sending you to do tasks that he can’t be bothered to do.

“Hey, disciple. Go run to the never ending forest dimension and send Mother Nature a message. She still owes me something.” There wouldn’t even be time for you to respond before he whisks you away with a snap of his fingers.

Now, moving on to a more romantic version of Bill!

Having been betrothed to the strongest being in the universe, you’ll be absolutely spoiled. Anything across the multiverse is yours. Bill can make it happen!

While he doesn’t need to sleep, he’ll set up a room just for you in the Fearamid. Ever seen a triangle-shaped bed? Well, now you have! The room would be decorated in the gaudiest decorations a demon could think of. I hope you like the color gold, you’ll be seeing it in your nightmares. The room would be soundproof as well. The party isn’t stopping just because Bill’s human needs some rest.

Affection with Bill won’t be typical by human standards. Rather than hugs and gentle touches, he’s a lot more aggressive. Punches on the arm, slaps on the back, and heavy-handed head rubs are more his style. But maybe if you beg, he’ll let you kiss one of his surfaces.

Trips to another dimension are always a fun date idea! You’ll be introduced to species and lands beyond your mortal comprehension. See anything you like here, go ahead and take it back to the Fearamid. What you want is yours to take!

Bill likes to go all out and party. He’s throwing the biggest and most chaotic wedding you’ll ever attend. Any guest that doesn’t bring a nice enough gift is either getting thrown into the worst dimension possible or turned to stone.
