This isn’t related to anything and definitely not directed at you but I wanted to vent and I love your blog. I wish there was deeper love for Sokka in the fandom :( I feel like he usually just gets treated as a hot beefcake who’s just there to comfort and/or top Zuko, rather than being a complex character with his own emotional baggage and insecurities he’s still growing through. I think he grew up too soon having to take care of everyone and I think he needs someone to care for him too.
You’re right and you should say it anon!!! This is a Sokka stan account. Okay but like Sokka is such a wonderful and amazing character. Like you said he has emotional baggage and insecurities. The boy is traumatized. And like he’s funny-that’s for sure but he is not just comedic relief.
Sokka lost his mother too. And then his father went off to war. Sokka had to assume the role of a leader far before any child should have to even think about it.
I think Sokka’s trauma manifested in protective behavior. With Katara, there is so much anger, especially relating to the fact that her mother died protecting her. But with Sokka, his mother was killed because she was thought to be the last waterbender in the SWT- but it’s really his sister. And Katara is in innate danger just by existing. At some level, Sokka has to be aware of this at all times.
And I don’t think Katara gets this. In the first episode, she says
Ever since mom died, [Points to herself.] I've been doing all the work around camp while you've been off playing soldier!
Even from this line, we establish up front that Sokka has assumed the role of the protector. He’s 15. He’s so young. So young. And like as the series progresses, we understand why we unlock his tragic back story so to speak and it’s just- he loves his friends and family so much and everything he does is to keep them safe. Like the library? get more info on the fire nation to keep his friends safe from them.
And like Sokka works so hard and he’s so good at everything he does. And he’s so smart and loving and caring and all he wants to do is keep the people around him safe. And like then he meets Yue and falls in love with her and then she turns into the freaking moon. Like oh my god?? The trauma??? Therapy, please!!!!
And we don’t see that effect Sokka that much. In fact, the first major time we see how it holds him back is with his relationship with Suki and it’s this moment where we have to realize that Sokka is moving forward for everyone else sake- they don’t think about the events that happened at the NWT the way he does, it’s just another thing he’ll have to carry by himself.
Yeah, Sokka man. He’s so great. He’s so well-written and we need to give him more love because he is amazing.
one thing i love about sokka as a character is that even when one of his traits (and i’d say his main ‘fighting’ skill, swordsmanship apart) is being a great strategist and problem-solver, this was never used as a “substitute” for, like, an actual character. as in, you never felt that sokka was there just cause the writers needed someone to come up with plans or ideas in the show. it also never felt like his intelligence was being used as a deus ex machina, not even at the start. the way he came up with plans and ideas and the development of his leadership skills always felt very organic to me, sort of parallel to the gradual development of katara and aang’s bending skills. it also helped a lot that the writers let his plans fail sometimes (like when he tried to open that door at crescent island) or just be outright silly or impractical (like when he suggests they dress momo as a ghost to infiltrate the party in ba sing se), which usually left room for some help and feedback from the rest of the gaang when it came to problem solving –this without any of them ever coming close to “stealing” sokka’s place as the idea guy in the group. its just perfect!!
All I'm saying is Sokkas make up skills would immensely outdo Kataras
Sokka can do both watertribe and Kyoshi paint flawlessly but Katara would be trying to waterbend her liquid eyeliner and getting increasingly mad at the uneven strokes
Day 21: Proximity
Why be love rivals when you can be lovers? Lol
So I had this idea of motorcyclists Shinsou bc a motorcycle is just a step up from a bike and he likes cycling! Also bc motorcyclists who save kittens and put them in their leather jackets r just
<33333333333 rlly great
Also shinsou’s hair was not meant for a helmet lol
Shinsou and Kaminari ☆ Boku no Hero Academia ep. 91
JUST FINISHED WATCHING THE ANIMANIACS REBOOT AND THIS “IT” PARODY IS STILL FUCKIN ME UP BC IT DIDNT GO AS I EXPECTED AT ALL AND MY HEART HURTS SO MUCH FOR YAKKO???
((SPOILERS FOR EP 11 AND THE FIRST “IT” REBOOT MOVIE))
IN THE REAL MOVIE PENNYWISE SCARES ALL THE KIDS INDIVIDUALLY AND (SPOILER ALERT) THEY END UP DEFEATING HIM BY WORKING TOGETHER BC HE CANT SCARE THEM ALL AT THE SAME TIME bc what is scary to one kid isnt scary to another etc
SO I WAS KINDA EXPECTING SOMETHING OF THE SAME VEIN IN THE SKETCH bUT IN TRUE WARNER FASHION THE “SCARES” HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO AFFECT ON THEM
EXCEPT
fOR YAKKO???
WHEN HE IS ALONE WITHOUT SOMEONE CONSTANTLY VALIDATING THE FACT THAT HES FUNNY OR THAT HIS JOKES HAVE SOME KINDA IMPACT (EVEN IF THE REACTION IS NEGATIVE) HE FEELS??? WORTHLESS?? INVISIBLE??? VERY VERY ANXIOUS..
first “nickelwise” doesnt react to his jokes, THEN takes away his ability to talk entirely aND YAKKO GETS SO SCARED HE VERY NEARLY GETS HIS SOUL SUCKED OUTTA HIS BODY BEFORE DOT SAVES HIM AND HIS FIRST REACTION IS
;;___;;
i feel like wakko and dot’s scares had little effect bc a) dot always thinks shes cute and b) wakko will eat anything whether or not its food, none of these are fears
bUT YAKKO’S NAME AND WHOLE IDENTITY REVOLVE AROUND BEING THE “FUNNY GUY” THE GUY W THE JOKES! “THE ONE WHO YACKS”
Katara: are you talking to yourself?
Sokka: yes. It’s the only way I can have an intelligent conversation in this house
I love the layers of this fight scene. The layers…
I’m pretty sure this is the first time Azula has ever been intimidated by her brother. She thinks she knows him, knows what to expect fighting him, but the Sun Warriors taught Zuko how to Firebend not from a place of rage, but purpose. His attacks are so much more controlled, and for the first time, he poses a real threat to her.
Sokka, my boy Sokka, has only been even wielding a sword for what, like a month? And here he is, putting Azula on the defence with it. The close-up of her smirk breaking into genuine fear when he swings and nearly forces her over the edge is so telling that she was not expecting him to actually go for such a move.
Azula is constantly on the offensive in pretty much every other fight scene she’s ever been in, but against Sokka and Zuko here, she’s much more cautious. The girl obviously did not expect such a challenge but they brought it. The way they rotate around each other in attacking is wild, and I truly believe this could have been Azula’s defeat if not for interference.
