Coping

Footsteps came padding softly down the staircase that led from Wayne manor’s sitting room to the dimly lit Batcave. Whoever was coming was light on their feet, almost silent. You had a pretty good idea who it was but you didn’t turn away from the computer screen to check.

They stopped somewhere behind you and waited a moment before speaking. “You missed dinner.” Of course it was Dick. He must have volunteered to check on you. You didn’t even know it was dinner time.

“Wasn’t hungry” You lied, typing something into the search bar and flipping through the files that popped up. You didn’t know how long you’d been at this but it’d been a good few hours since you’d spoken and your voice was hoarse.

Dick started fiddling with some gear on one of the repair tables. “Right, of course.” Clearly, he was trying to seem nonchalant, and clearly, he was failing. “You’ve been down here a while.”

It was more of a statement than a question but you felt the need to answer. “I’m fine. Just busy.” You took on a slightly defensive tone as you chose one of the files and began reading.

The screen was huge, he could read the page displayed for himself but still, he asked “What’re you working on?”

He was stalling. “There's talk of Scarecrow doing something on New Year's Eve. Bunch of people gathered at the square is a great place to shoot off some fear gas. I need to find him so I'm cross-referencing his last known hideouts.” Everyone was going to start suiting up soon but for now the cave was filled with an eerie quiet.

You still didn’t look up. You let your eyes pass over the screen but you weren’t reading anymore, instead, you were focused on the movement behind you. You felt him walk silently over and lean on the desk just a few inches away from you. He faced the wall behind you and crossed his arms

Dick let another moment pass and you almost looked up at him but held out. It was a game of chicken now, seeing who would look first, who would talk first and bring up the real reason he’d come down here. You both knew.

He lost. “I’m worried about you.”

“Why?” You asked as innocently as you could. “It’s already happened there’s no point moping about it-”

“Don’t.” He cut you off, keeping his voice soft. “Don’t lie to me,” he looked down. “I can tell when you are. You lost someone in the field and now you're sitting in the dark working on cases for hours.” He crouched next to you trying to catch your eye. “You’re not ok. You need a break.”

You clenched your jaw. It had been 3 days since an innocent person died in your arms. Everyone had told you that you’d done your best and no one could have saved them. You still blamed yourself. “No, I don’t. I let someone die, but it happens. I just need to keep working.”

“Hey look at me.” He turned your chair towards him and you finally met his eyes. The determined sort of concern on his face matched his new tone. “It wasn’t your fault. No one could have stopped it but you have the right to be upset. Acting like everything’s fine and throwing yourself into work isn't going to help.”

“I am fine.”

“You’re a shit liar is what you are.” He threw the soft and sweet approach out the window and settled for the truth. “I know you, and I know you’re gonna sit here and tell me that you don’t care even though you do and that you’re perfectly okay even when you aren’t but you don’t have to.”

Tears started to collect in your eyes and tried to fight them off. You hated crying. Especially in front of Dick but at this point you didn’t think you could stop it. Then he pulled you into a hug you definitely couldn’t. You let him pull you into his arms and you hugged him back. In the past three days, you hadn’t let yourself feel anything. You’d barely let yourself think about but now you sobbed into Dicks shoulder.

“I hate feeling like this, if I stop for a second all I can see is her face.” You’d slipped out of the chair and onto the floor next to him. “She died and I couldn't save her.” you leaned back enough to look at him. “How do you do it?”

“It’s part of the job. We can’t save everyone, we can’t keep going forever, not alone.” He cupped your face and wiped a

way the tears on your cheeks. “But you’re not alone. You have me, and I'm pretty great.”

That made you laugh. For a second you just sat there looking at him, and then, you pulled him in and kissed him.

bookends, bestfriends, deadends

Pairing + WC: Jason Grace x reader, 1.6k Warnings: slow burn, once again and as always with my love Jason this is NOT canon-compliant, Jason may be a tiny bit ooc but I tired Summary: In the months between saving Hera and setting sail for New Rome, Jason finds himself making a friend Authors note: ok, y’all, here’s the deal; I took a nap and woke up with an idea, so I started writing; then I realized I needed set up, so I wrote this. Now I have a full fic that doesn’t include my original idea, so I will have to make pt: 2, but at least it’s already almost all the way written

Bookends, Bestfriends, Deadends

Camp was far too busy this year; even for the off-season, it felt like there were campers everywhere. With all the bustle, it was hard to find a moment of peace. That’s why you’d taken to the woods that day. Following the path you’d walked a million times to a little outcrop of ruins not far from the beach, deep enough to not be disturbed. You’d taken a thick blanket and draped it over a vaguely couch-shaped block of stone ages ago to use as a reading nook. It was calm and peaceful and empty, usually.

This time, when you got close enough to see your little piece of peace, there was already someone there. A blonde boy with a scar on his lip sitting on your faux couch and squinting at the book in his hand. Jason Grace. Of course, you knew who he was, everyone knew of him and Piper and Leo, all working to get ready for the next great prophecy.

Sneaking up on a former Roman soldier didn’t seem like the best plan, so you’d spoken out. “Guess this place isn’t so secret after all,” geez, what an opener.

Jason looked up with a start and got to his feet before you could say anything else. “Hi, hey, sorry, is this your spot? I wasn’t sure who’s it was, so I stayed to read some. I can go.”

“Oh no, please, you don’t have to,” you were quick to put up your hands and stop him from leaving. You two hadn’t necessarily talked before, but he had always seemed nice at meals and campfires, if not a little awkward. “You were here first. I can leave if you want to be alone.”

Jason paused, it seemed he was actually taking you in now, noticing the book in your hand, Don Quixote as opposed to the copy of War and Peace he held. “I don’t mind company,” he offered you a small nervous smile, it was so pure you had to just stare at it for a second before responding.

“Neither would I,” you finally said, returning the smile. You walked over and sat down tucking your legs under you and leaving plenty of room for Jason to sit on the other side.

He joined and read next to you for what felt like both hours and minutes. Two days later, you had beaten him there, so when he arrived, you smiled and scooted to the left, giving him room again on your right. Over the next month, you crossed paths at the ruins what must have been a dozen times. There was never much conversation; it was more of a silent agreement to enjoy each other’s company, and each day, the distance between your shoulders seemed to get ever so slightly smaller.

After a while, you got comfortable being directly next to him. Your shoulders would brush each time Jason moved to turn the page, and you couldn't help but notice how warm and strong he was. Silent meetings became small discussions about your current read, which turned into talks about other books you’d recommend to each other, which eventually morphed into a solid friendship. You would invite him to eat with your cabin since he had no one else at his. He would update you on the progress of the ship and the quest, you even got to know the other campers involved.

Over the next few months, your lives became completely intertwined. You spent most of your day with each other. You watched him train for the quest, pushing his limits in sparring sessions until he was too exhausted to do much of anything. You would drag him out to your spot in the woods on days when he’d gotten so focused he had to be forced to take a break. You’d even tried to help him get some memories back. He would eat with you, read with you, help you with whatever chores you had around camp, anything to spend more time with together.

He was the first person you turned to when you had something to say. He was the only one who remembered which campfire songs were your favorites or which books you’d reread depending on your mood. You cared about him so deeply, and you weren’t even sure how you’d come to feel so much in so little time. You truly hadn’t realized how much you needed him around you until you thought about just how soon he’d be leaving.

Of course, he would go back to Camp Jupiter; you knew that. This was never meant to be permanent; you were sure he missed his old life, his old friends, his old home. But part of you, somewhere in the deepest, most selfish part of your heart, wanted him to stay. You wanted him to forget about Rome, and Jupiter, and the quest. You wanted him to stay here with the strawberry fields and the books and the beach and with you. You wanted him to forget his sense of duty to a place that never cared and stay with someone who would give their whole heart away just to see him be happy for a moment longer. It was a feeling that filled you with guilt every time it crossed your mind.

It had occupied your thoughts nearly the entire day when Jason came to your cabin that evening. He knocked on the door until one of your siblings answered, and they called you over, muttering something about stupid and lovesick and so annoying that you hadn’t totally caught.

You stepped onto the porch and closed the cabin door, leaving Jason and you alone in the dim light of the setting son. He was handsome as ever, a fact that you had resolved not to dwell on; plenty of people found their closest friends to be stunningly beautiful, it wasn’t a big deal.

In fact, it was totally normal for someone to notice exactly when their best friend had skipped their usual haircut and started letting the military style grow or how their eyes exploded with color when the sun hit them just right. And, of course, there was no deeper reason for why you would pick up on every scrape or bruise he’d gotten from training. You were just hyper-observant, never mind that it only applied to one person.

As you took him in, scanning for the weariness you so often saw and he so often dismissed, you noticed more than anything how nervous he was. “What’s up?”

“Hey, um, I just wanted to, well.” He took a deep breath and let his words spill out a mile a minute. He told you that the Argo II would be ready to fly any day now. He told you how they were going to find Percy and how the first place they were going to check was New Rome. He brought up his old life, a life he wanted to remember, a life he thought he would remember when he got back there. These were all things you’d know and that filled you with dread, but you let him talk without interrupting. His rambling soon turned to a topic you haven’t expected, it turned to you. He told you how important you were to him, how much you’d helped him adjust to life at camp, and how much he appreciated everything you’d done for him.

As he went on and on, you felt your heart begin to pound. The way he was talking lit a spark inside your gut, and the borderline desperation in his voice made you dare to hope. The emotion in his eyes made you think maybe, just maybe, he felt the same kind of connection that you felt with him. You could tell it was going somewhere important, somewhere that made him nervous and hopefully at the exact same time.

“I guess I just realized while we were planning in the bunker,” he began to close in on his point. “How important you are to me, and I can’t imagine what it’d be like without you. You can say no of course, it’s a lot to ask of anyone but,” he took another breath. “Do you want to come with me to New Rome?”

That wasn’t exactly what you were expecting. The funny feeling in your gut shifted and morphed, flashing through disappointment for a brief moment. As Jason waited for an answer, you had to process exactly what he’d asked. Going back to New Rome meant he was going back to his old life, a fact you were all too aware of, but now, maybe you didn’t have to lose him to it. He still wanted you by his side. He still wanted you to be a part of his life.

“Yes,” you finally replied. “Yes, of course, I’ll go,” you watch the relief wash over him, his nerves visibly dispersing as one of the widest smiles you’d ever seen etched itself across his face.

In the next moment, he wrapped his arms around you. It was a bone-crushing hug that squeezed the air from your lungs, and you wrapped your own arms around him as tightly as you could. “You have no idea how happy that makes me,” he whispered to you as you tried to stop your heart from exploding. This wasn’t how you wanted it, but at least for now, this would be enough.

I Lost The Ask For This So I Had To Improvise

Sick Days

Falling in love was never part of the plan. Neither was getting the flu but life just loves to throw curve balls your way. That's how you ended up laying in your dark room with dirty tissues spilling out of your trash can and your curtains drawn.

It had been nearly 3 days since you'd gotten sick so you were in the recovery stage but that didn't make your day any better. You hadn't had a proper night's sleep all week and despite feeling your fever breaking you were no closer to rest. You tossed and turned under your covers trying various different methods but nothing seemed to pull your mind into the depths of sleep.

It felt like you'd been laying there for an eternity. Looking over at your clock you realized that eternity had only actually been about 7 minutes. You groaned loudly and pulled the blanket over your head. That's when you heard a soft knocking coming from your window.

You flipped the blanket off your head and you looked towards the sound. It was only 3 o'clock in the afternoon so the sun was still shining through the thin curtains, showing the silhouette of your favorite person ever. You kicked the blanket off and tried to get out of your bed but tripped and landed on the floor with a thud.

"Fuck," you cursed, untangling yourself from the blanket. The wind was knocked out of you and you cough lightly before jumping up and rushing across the room. You opened the curtains with a wide smile plastered across your face.

There he was. Your very handsome, surprisingly romantic, and all around adorable boyfriend of 11 months dressed in a dark blue Superman hoodie (to spite Bruce no doubt) and holding a bag of your favorite food.

You pushed the window open letting a refreshing cool breeze into your otherwise warm room. The giddy smile on your face only spread when he ducked through the gap.

"But soft, what light through yonder window breaks?" He quoted, handing you the bag of food with a casual smirk adorning his features.

"Romeo oh Romeo, what would I do without you?" you took the bag and leaned up slightly to press a quick kiss on his cheek.

"Starve most likely," he shrugged, moving his hand to cup your chin and bring you in for a real kiss.

You stepped back and looked at the S design on his chest. "Wow the super logo? What's your dear old dad done this time?"

"Not everything I do is out of spite you know." He quipped.

"Well that's definitely a lie but whatever," you shot back, smirking. "I think you look really cute in that sweatshirt,"

Placing the take out bag on your desk you took a look inside. "How was the mission?" he'd been gone the past few days helping a friend of his with some evil psycho. You always worried about him when he went to face people like that but you knew the other heros would look out for him. Plus he promised he wouldn't be dying again anytime soon and he always kept his promises to you.

"Ugh boring," he sat at your desk chair and leaned his head back dramatically. "I was just a distraction because I had the loudest guns." He twisted side to side while you put the take out on the desk.

"Well that's what you get for throwing your silencers at Penguin," you laughed. When he first told you about his double life you didn't believe him but the more you thought about it the more it made sense. Late nights, mystery scars, not to mention the literal Red Hood suit.

"That was one time!" He defended kicking you lightly with fake offense in his voice.

You laughed and kicked him back before returning your attention to the bag. "The fact that it happened at all is still absolutely hilarious," You handed him his container and a plastic fork.

That's when you were reminded of your sickness. You sneezed 3 times in a row and Jason handed you a tissue. "You're such a disaster," he laughed at the expression you made inbetween sneezes.

"It's not funny! I've been sneezing non stop for 3 days! It's so annoying," you complained, opening the food and plopping on your bed. "Seriously, you'd think i'd have gotten better by now but no."

He laughed again and sat next to you. Wrapping his arms around your waist from behind he pulled you into him so your back was resting on his chest and his back was resting on your wall. "I'm surprised all your complaining hasn't fixed it yet." He set his food on the bedside table so he could eat and hold you at the same time.

You gasped and smacked his leg. "Asshole. I'm allowed to complain if i want to and you're the lucky bastard that gets to listen!"

"Oh yeah, so lucky," he joked, clearly trying to get a rise out of you and clearly succeeding.

After eating some and talking for a little while you put the half empty container on your table next to his much less full container. You leaned back into him and adjusted the blanket so it covered your legs. The steady rising and falling of his chest was calming. He was there, with you in that moment and you felt so strangely complete.

The two of you sat in silence for a few blissful minutes and somehow ended up laying down. You had reached your hand up to rest on his neck and you twirled a strand of his hair between your fingers.

"Your hair is really soft," You hummed, your eyes closed and you body relaxed. He hummed back and began tracing random shapes on your arm.

That was the first nap either of you had taken in a very long time. It was also the best nap either of you had taken in a very very long time.

Hey. I Heard You Were Open For Requests? If So, Could I Get A Fluff 43 For Jon Kent X Reader? ( Sorry

Oblivious

“So, Y/n, I guess what i’m trying to say is that I...” Jonathan Kent let out a soft sigh. “am an idiot.” he finished before turning away from his mirror and landing face first on his bed. He had spent the past 45 minutes trying to figure out a non embarrassing way to tell you that he was in fact, madly in love. The only problem was you were his best friend and almost definitely didn’t feel the same way according to him.

“This isn’t working.” He flipped over on the bed with a groan. “What would Damian do? He would... kill his feelings with a double edged sword, so he’s probably not the best person to model after.” Jon stood up and started pacing his room, too lost in his own train of thought to notice you push his door open and lean on the frame.

Jon told Damian about his crush and when he asked for advice he got a not so encouraging love-makes-you-weak speech. Then he asked a friend from school for advice, and naturally that friend told his friends and his friends told their friends and their friends told their friends and by the end of the week it seemed like the whole world knew. The whole world, except you. You remained blissfully unaware.

“New plan. What would Dick do?” he paused to think over his question. “He would use one of those cheesy pick up lines and do the hair flippy thing he does. But how does that work so well every time?”

Jon, being the goofy lovable idiot that he is had captured the hearts of more than one girl at school. Whenever they’d talk about boys his name was sure to come up. Like the time Ann Howls spent a whole 6 and a half minutes gushing about his “midnight black hair and beautiful eyes”, which only made you want to barf.

“If you were a vegetable. You’d be a cutecumber.” He had a weak grin plastered on his face and he looked expectantly at the mirror as if waiting for his own reflection to reject him. “That was awful.” He cringed at his own choice of words.

“I thought it was cute.” You spoke up causing him to jump.

“Ahh wh-what are you? why are you? H-how long have you been standing there?” he stumbled over his words and had a slightly panicked expression.

“Long enough to know that you’ve been holding out on me.” You laughed and flopped down on his bed. “You have a crush! More importantly you have a crush that you didn’t tell me about?” You squashed down the bit of jealousy that welled in your stomach still very much unaware that his crush was in fact on you.

“S-so, you don’t know who i was talking about?” Jon asked shyly, inching closer to the bed.

“No, I don't. Which i’m offended by. I mean come on, you tell me you’re from a different planet but not who you're into? Ridiculous.” You joked.

He let out a relieved sigh and sat on the edge of the bed. “You have a really bad habit of sneaking up on me and learning my secrets.”

“Or maybe you're just bad at keeping secrets.” You shot back. “Now tell me about this mystery girl!” You patted the spot in front of you signaling for him to sit closer.

“Well,” He moved slightly closer to you. “She’s really nice and funny and smart when she wants to be.” He smiled, the kind of smile that reached his eyes and made everything seem better. “And she loves superheroes so that works out well for me.” he let out a small laugh. “She’s stupid brave and when she wants something, no one can stop her. I know it sounds cheesy but-” he paused as if trying to find the right words. “when i’m with her, it’s like nothing else matters.”

You scooted closer to him so now you were both sitting less than a foot apart in the middle of the bed. “She sounds amazing.” You smiled, hoping he wouldn’t notice the way your voice had the slightest bit of hurt leaking through. You never really thought he’d actually like you back. All this time it was just a stupid crush and you figured you’d get over it but hearing him talk about someone the way he just did. The way his eyes lit up just thinking about her. It fueled a small flame of jealousy in your stomach.

But you pushed it down. You didn’t have any other choice and you really just wanted him to be happy even if that meant you weren’t. “You really like her don’t you?”

“Yeah, yeah i do.”

“Then you have to tell her how you feel.” It pained you to say but you knew this was best. He almost seemed in love and it wouldn’t be fair for you to get in the way. “Any girl would be lucky to have you.” You put your hand on top of his and squeezed it slightly.

“You really think so?” he questioned, looking down at your hands and flipped his over so he could squeeze back.

“I know so.” You smiled reassuringly as he looked back up and for a few seconds he didn’t say anything, you just sat in silence next to each other.

“I think I love you.”

Your heart skipped a beat and you felt your face grow slightly warm before pulling yourself together again. “Perfect, just like that. Now all you have to do is tell it to the girl.” You leaned back after realizing just how close your faces were. You pulled your hand away and turned your head to avoid his gaze.

You watched him in your peripherals and he didn’t seem to move for a solid 10 seconds. He blinked and a dumb grin found it’s way to his face.

“I-” He stopped himself by letting out an amused breath. “Screw it.” was all you heard before you felt something turn your head and slight pressure on your lips. It was soft and gone too soon. The jealous flame turned to butterflies and the heat rose to your cheeks instead. It was so fast you didn’t have time to react before he pulled away.

“Oh my god I'm so sorry I don't know what just came over me l-” You cut him off by grabbing the front of his shirt and pulling him back into the kiss. You didn't even realize what you’d done until it was far too late. The momentum of the quick move had knocked you off balance causing you to fall back on the bed. Your hand still held onto the front of his shirt so when you went down he went with you. His body landed on top of yours and it felt as though you were wrapped up in his warmth.

His hands moved slowly from where they had landed next to your body. His left hand moved to cup your cheek and his right hand lowered to your waist. The kiss was soft and warm and perfect but you could tell he was holding back, too scared of hurting you with his super strength. You let go of his shirt and snaked your arms around the back of his neck, deepening the kiss.

You pulled away gasping for air with a dopey grin across your face. He braced himself on his arms and looked down at you with a slightly unsure expression.

“Does, does that mean you like me back?” he asked timidly, trying to regain his breath as well.

“Yes,” You replied smiling. “it does.” You pulled him down for a third kiss which happened to be the first kiss neither of you were surprised by.
