reblog this if your blog is a safe space on april fools and won’t have any jumpers, screamers, or anything scary or anxiety inducing.
You know, an interesting tumblr transformation that's happened gradually, and which I've seen no one talk about: ask-culture has essentially dropped off to nothing.
By which I mean, asks used to be WAY more of the tumblr economy. They used to be more common to send, and receive, and see. They were integral to the collaborative, forum-like behavior of old tumblr communities, not even to speak on the HUGE number of ask-blogs that used to exist to only be interacted with in ask-form.
I'm not saying this in a vying-for-attention way but instead in an observational way: I used to get way way more asks in like 2015, even with a fraction of my follower count. I wonder if it's due to the homogenization of social media sites? There's a lot more of this divide between "content creator" and "consumer" instead of just a bunch of peer blogs who would talk to each other. "Asks" aren't really a thing on twitter, are they? And as I understand it, the closest thing to an "ask" on instagram or tiktok would be a creator screenshotting some comment and responding to it in a new reel or video or whatever those content mediums are. Are asks just too tumblr-specific? Is that aspect of the site culture dying out as more and more people converge to using all their social media sites in the same way?

because my writing major soul dies a little bit more every time i see a perfectly good story improperly formatted.
this is a guide specifically for ao3 posting
fanfic is not academic writing. you don't need an indent at the beginning of each line. for the sake of scrolling it just makes it more organized and easier to read. The double return puts a space between the two paragraphs as seen here:
what the hell does that mean, youre probably asking. allow me to show you.
these are each three separate thoughts. so they each get their own paragraph. think about it like the reader is taking a pause between each thought, where should those pauses go?
do not and i repeat DO NOT write your dialogue like this:
"blah blah blah" he said. "blah blah blah" she said. "blah blah blah" they said. "blah blah blah" he said. "blah blah blah" she said.
it is impossible to read and its confusing and people will click off your story. dialogue should look like this:
see how each time a different person talks there's a new line? there can be not dialogue mixed with the dialogue, but every time the person speaking changes, there would be a new line.
I'm sorry but this is AMAZING- ✨
Happy New Year 2024 from Korea.

Everything that is made by FANS is FANart there is no such thing as "CANON" if someone other than the creator made it. This includes "fanon" vs "canon" posts. That is YOUR interpretation of what "canon" is which, surprise surprise, IS ALSO FANON. EVERYONE IS WRONG. AAARRRRRGHHH.
thank you for watching the show!

That's what I call it when I start obsessing over the numbers I get on fics or posts. When I refresh AO3 every five or ten minutes to see if I've got more hits or kudos. When I keep my tumblr activity page open in a tab to see new notes as soon as they come in.
It's not fun. Not really. Even when I sometimes tell myself it is.
You see, it starts out exciting! I've put a thing out there and now I get to see the reactions to it! I'm like a kid on their birthday who can't wait to see their presents. What are people going to say? Will they like it? Will they talk to me about it?
I'm lucky enough that I do get notes on tumblr posts and I do get comments and kudos when I post on AO3. But depending on how excited I am about the thing that I made and depending on how uncertain I am of whether it's any good, I want to get a lot more attention than I end up getting.
I know that that's a normal feeling. I know it's even a rational one! I've put a lot of effort into making something, or I've made something that I think my community will like, and not hearing back like I'd hoped can sometimes feel like rejection. It can be a huge disappointment that makes me doubt myself, my abilities, my connection to my community.
That's why I say it's not fun. Because even though 'engagement' can give me a really high high, it can also give me a really low low.
When I finally realize I'm in one of those lows (and it sometimes takes me a while to realize that I am), that's when I know that I need to step away.
When it's really bad, I just stop posting until I'm in a better mental space. For me, I now recognize that those feelings are often coming from me wanting a connection of some kind. The need for attention is coming from a feeling of loneliness or isolation, and so I need to counteract that by reaching out to people I know and care about to have a chat or a meal or just some time spent doing something communal.
When I can catch it early, then I force myself to close the activity tab here on tumblr and hide whatever stats are making me spiral on AO3. I've learned to recognize that I'm looking to those metrics as a way to feel important or special or cared for in some way and that I need to figure out where I'm feeling insecure in my life and how to get some reassurance - because strangers on the internet won't be able to give me what I need.
If you're currently spiraling, first of all lemme give you a hug ❤️ I hope you can take some time and figure out what it is that you want those stats to tell you about yourself or what it is that you think those stats will give you that you're not getting from somewhere else.
And if you haven't heard it lately, I'm glad that you're in this world - no matter what kind of numbers you have on your posts.

I'm pretty sure that we never get a canon explanation of how Nightmare gained his castle. I've already explored multiple possibilities with that in the past, but writing my most recent fic I was thinking: what if it's just an extension of his corruption, like the tentacles?
Imagine, overtime he managed to accumulate more and more. So the castle started off as just a throne, then it became a room, then corridors and rooms started being added.
Being made of corruption, the Castle is arguably as alive as Nightmare himself. And it probably equally needs to feed, which gives Nightmare an ulterior reason for wanting henchmen and for why most don't last long in there.
The Castle is a malicious entity just as much as Nightmare is. It's vindictive. It twists and shapes its insides like it's most convenient to it. It has eyes and ears everywhere, but that doesn't mean that it always snitches to Nightmare. It's not a beast that Nightmare controls after all, it considers itself on the same level as the god. It only tends to aid Nightmare because he's the one bringing it food. But it could be interesting if, at some point, it starts working on selecting certain people to keep forever so that it can grow independent and kick Nightmare out. After all, I highly doubt that two incarnations of the same corruption would like to share a space forever.
I imagine that, someone like Killer who's grown so used to reading all of Nightmare's micro-movements would probably study the Castle with just as much attention. That could explain how he was able to sneak around with Color behind Nightmare's back. He probably knew how to get on the Castle's good side.
Although, I do think that the Castle's favorite resident would likely be Dust. He has nowhere else to be, no one waiting for him, and he's filled to the brim with negativity. That's an ideal candidate for a permanent stay.
Funnily enough, I think Nightmare himself would be the Castle's least favorite resident. He's unfortunately just very useful.
