🔴BLUEBERRY AND STRAWBERRY !! 🔵 Week 2 of @/stellarious0's drawing challenge on twitter!
Welcome back to another episode of: Jade is a nerd about something absolutely useless! Today's topic: Talent classification in Danganronpa/Fangans.
In the process of making my own fangan/s, I've created a classification system for the types of talents you can give characters. These classifications are...
Arts: Talents that are involved in the visual arts, performing arts, or fashion. Encompasses performers of all types, any type of visual artist, or anyone involved in fashion. (Ex. Actor, Abstract Artist, Model)
Practical: Talents that focus on a specialized skill or work with your hands. Also includes any talents that are religious or spiritual in nature. (Ex. Mechanical Engineer, Detective, Shrine Maiden)
Academic: Talents that are recognized by how much knowledge or experience a character has in an academic field. Covers most science, literature, math, and research based talents. (Ex. Chemist, Theologian, Archaeologist)
Sports: Talents relating to athletic skill. (Ex. Footballer, Kickboxer, Bowler)
Novelty: Talents given to a person who is special simply by existing. Can also be given to characters who win a contest for their talent. Includes Lucky/Unlucky Students, royalty, and non-human characters. (Ex. Lucky Student, Student, Princess)
This system of classification was based on my experience in the community over about three or four years, seeing many other people's original characters as well as creating my own. I found many fell into these categories. My "perfect" ratio, which my friends and I used as a guideline for making our fangan casts, is 4 arts : 4 practical : 4 academic : 2 sports: 2 novelty. I felt this ratio kept things even and grounded.
A few months ago, I began to wonder if my "perfect" ratio was more of my own creation than an actual pattern I saw. I thought, in the event it was, that I would come up with a mathematically accurate ratio that better represented the talent distribution of Danganronpa and its fan projects. This was my attempt at doing just that.
For this, I tried to collect as varied of a sample as possible. I included the three mainline Danganronpa games and sixteen fangans, ranging from very popular ones to very obscure ones. The fangans sampled for this analysis were...
Danganronpa Another
Super Danganronpa Another 2
Danganronpa Despair Time
Brave Danganronpa Coward's Paradise
Project Eden's Garden
Danganronpa He(art)less Deceit
Danganronpa Hushed Whispers
Danganronpa Muave
Danganronpa Despair's Revival
Danganronpa Re:Birth
Danganronpa Twisted Truths
Danganronpa Survivor's Guilt
Danganronpa Despair's Flame (my fangan! also the one where the talent ratio originated)
Danganronpa Cyberspace
Danganronpa Akeda Amusements
Danganronpa Lost Paradise (my other fangan that isn't released anywhere but I'm counting anyway)
I figured out the talent ratio for each individual game by looking through their casts and sorting them with my classification system. Ultimate ???'s were thrown out if possible (such as in the case of Akeda Amusements, where Hanari was thrown out due to the fangan having seventeen participants) and if not, they were counted as novelty.
Also, shout out to Yuki Maeda and Teruya Ōtori for managing to count for two different data sets despite my best efforts at finagling a way to keep them confined to one.
The first thing I noticed in looking at the ratios for canon Danganronpa was that Academic ultimates are underrepresented compared to what I initially remembered. It had been a while since I revisited the mainline games, and it was a shock to be reminded of that. I was also reminded, but not quite as shocked by the greater emphasis on practical ultimates.
In fangans, the focus on practical ultimates continues to be heavy, with none having less than two. There was also less focus on sports ultimates, with the majority having only one or two compared to the three that the mainline games had a majority of the time. They also tend to have more academic ultimates.
I think that this could be explained by looking at the types of people who make fangans. The majority of people I know who make fangans have very particular knowledge about certain fields due to experience or heavy research, and more often than not these fields do not include sports. They are more likely to make characters based on their experiences and knowledge that they can then insert into the story to make it seem more authentic.
I also, unsurprisingly, found that my "perfect" ratio was not reflected in many of the fangans I looked at. There was only one besides my own that followed that ratio.
Now, if my "perfect" ratio is not the mathematically perfect ratio, then what is?
According to the data collected for the canon games, this is.
This just so happens to also be the ratio for Trigger Happy Havoc.
According to the data collected from the fangans, this is the perfect ratio.
The only fangan that followed this ratio exactly was Akeda Amusements. V3 also had this distribution.
When considering both mainline and fan made games, the perfect ratio was this.
Ironically, not a single mainline game or fan game followed this ratio.
Out of curiosity, I also calculated the standard deviation for each data set.
Canon Danganronpa has little to no variation, conveying that talent ratios are quite consistent between games. The biggest variation would be in the novelty category, making sense as V3 scaled down the amount of novelty ultimates compared to the other two games.
The fangans are shown to have a much larger variation. Though I can't be surprised by this, as perhaps it is an unfair comparison. The mainline Danganronpa games were written by mostly the same team and had less to sample from, while the fangans have not only a larger sample size in which to deviate, but many different writers that think differently about talent distribution.
In putting this all together, I found that my classification system, while not perfect in any sense of the word, has some validity to it. If I wanted to, I could definitely make some improvements to it (especially in distinguishing between certain academic and practical fields from novelty), but as of now it works perfectly fine as an aide in cast creation for me.
My ratio is also not perfect, which was an expected outcome. Really none of the ratios I found are perfect, with none of them representing more than one or two of any mainline or fan made game. While ratios like the ones I found can be good for making sure you have a balanced distribution of talents, they aren't required to make a good cast. Personally, I'll continue using my personal "perfect" ratio as a baseline for any cast I make in the future.
I also had a lot of fun making this, and hope I can find a way to make more posts like this in the future. Thank you for reading this.
Things cis people in my town have actually said to me
Usually I’m extremely picky with webcomics, as I’m not afraid to drop them the moment I lose interest. So when I say this webcomic is interesting, it’s INTERESTING.
In fact, it may be one of my favorite ones.
“I Love Amy” is a webcomic released under Peanutoon back in 2022. It follows Bibi Reden, a cutesy girl with a bunny motif who has an obsessive crush on a boy named Peter. Once she finds Amy Lee, a shy girl in her grade talking to him, Bibi immediately befriends her and tries to get Amy to help her get with Peter. But plot-twist…they fall in love with each-other instead.
Psychological horror, drama, romance, and comedy? I’m hooked.
My first impressions were that it was gonna be a stereotypical yandere story, with Bibi set with the motive to KILL Amy in the beginning for talking to her crush. But it’s much more than that.
Bibi is a canon psychopath, who portrays traits of the disorder that are commonly expressed. But even so, the author definitely did their research. Bibi is low on empathy, has a tendency to lie, and can’t decipher right from wrong. But unlike contrary belief, she not incapable of love; she just loves people in her own special way, wanting to “keep them forever.” This is shown how she obsesses over Peter, and then later on, Amy.
What makes this series amazing is that her disorder is not her only “personality trait.” (Which by the way, disorders aren’t.) Bibi is very energetic, cheerful, and sticks to her ideals. She’s unique and is still able to think about others (or those she likes at least). Bibi is so well-written, how could you not fall in love with her? And speaking about love, this is where her love interest comes in.
Amy Lee is the definition of “plain-“ until you look a little bit deeper.
After a traumatic event involving her mother as a child, Amy lives with her aunt. Though she is loved and cared for in her current household and those around her, she still exhibits clear symptoms of PTSD. This causes her to be socially anxious and withdrawn, showing more signs of a social phobia than just pure introversion. But, she remains kindhearted and loyal. Amy is very down to earth too- a trait that’s personally to die for.
With Bibi’s eccentric personality and Amy’s closed off persona, they are like night and day. So, how could two different people possibly fall in love? Simple; naturally, like any other person. Even with their complexities, they are still able to love each-other whole-heartedly.
The webcomic also deals with themes about the effects of trauma, friendship issues (which I will get into another time), and sheds light onto family issues and grief. For such a cutesy-art style comic, it deals with every topic in such a unique and accurate way that I was really impressed.
So please, give this webcomic a shot!!!

Everything had been set up at the castle for the sleepover as a circle of sleeping bags had been placed in the main hall. Each one was fitted with the color schemes and logos of the person it belonged to. "WELCOME TO MARIO'S SLUMBER PARTY!" Mario had on his red pajama top with his spaghetti patterned pants. Everyone was super excited to get started, except for Four.
He clung onto Beeg while thinking to himself. No doubt he was fixated on those awful nightmares of his. Mario tried to cheer him up by saying "Don't worry Smg4. If anything can stop your scary dreams, it's a fun filled night with your best friends!" He turned to Three and said "Right Smg3?"
Three was sitting in his skull pajamas while petting Eggdog. "Yeah whatever you say idiot." Four tried to muster a weak smile. "Thanks Mario..." Mario then noticed his pillow and got a scathingly good idea. He grabbed it and flung it across the room, hurdling towards Saiko. She took a step back to get out of the way and instead the pillow hit Luigi, sending him flying right into the wall.
Bob noticed and grabbed a grenade launcher from out of his bag. "BRO IT'S ON!" Normally Four would come and join his friends in their shenanigans, but he just couldn't shake that awful feeling from his mind, even if Mario had cheered him up a little. Saiko could see Four's uneasiness and went over to Three. She whispered to him "I think you should go check on him." He looks up to her and then to Four. Raising an eyebrow, he asks "Why would I do that?"
She sighed and said "Your the only one who knows what he's going through." Saiko wasn't wrong. He was the one to give Four the idea of the perfect video in the first place. He even admitted back there that he felt the same way when he had control of the channel. Not just that, but he also told Four he would always be there for him so it was kinda his responsibility to take care of that moron.
"Alright fine." Just then, an explosion sent Saiko crashing onto the ground. She got up with furry in her eyes to find Bob, holding a grenade launcher and Meggy beside him with a pillow. They both shared a glance with each other and quickly hid their items behind their backs. Both of them pointed at the other and said
"It was him!"
"IT WAS HER!"
Saiko took out her hammer and started swinging violently, causing both of them to duck out of the way. Bob's eyes began to turn red from anger and he started launching missiles everywhere while Meggy took out her splatshot gun and fired ink in a bunch of directions. Three got up, placing Eggdog down and said "OI! Stop fighting!" Nobody listened to him as the pillow fight was escalating immensely.
Melony had fallen asleep already in her sleeping bag and Tari was using her's to hide. Beeg had managed to squeeze out of Four's grasp and he and Eggdog went to go hide somewhere. A grenade was heading straight for them, but Boopkins quickly scooped them up and ran around the room screaming. Three just watched and facepalmed himself. "God why did I agree to hang out with these losers."
Four was still curled up, burying his face in his knees. That was it. Three had reached his breaking point when he could see that this was not helping Four at all. "EVERYONE SHUT UP! YOU'RE MAKING FOUR FEEL WORSE!" Everyone froze in place and teleported to their sleeping bags while everything else had been instantly cleaned up. Meggy was the first to regret her actions. "Sorry about that Four. We didn't mean to stress you out." He poked his head out from the curled position and muttered "It's fine Meggy. I'm alright."
Tari got the courage to mention another option in mind. "How about we play some monopoly instead." She went to go get the game out of the storage room while everyone else agreed. Three knew that Four was lying so he said "You guys start. I'm going to talk privately with Four." Mario got a smug grin. "Ooooo is Smg3 and Smg4 going to make sweet love in there?"
Three blushes furiously and punched Mario. "MAMA!" Four was a tad confused. "Huh. But-" Before he could get another word in, Three grabbed his hand and dragged him towards his room. Once he shut the door he turned towards Four. "Look. I know you were lying back there." Four tried to cover it up by putting on a fake smile and laughing nervously. "What do you mean? I'm fine."
"No you're not. I can tell that you're stressed and overthinking things. Is this about the nightmares?" No use in pretending now. Three knew him too well. "It just feels like someone is out to get me y'know. I can hear their voice in my head, even when I'm awake." Three's expression softens a little while Four's breathing speeds up. "I just can't shake off these bad memories and if I get taken over again I could hurt someone and-"
"Four. Slow down." He didn't listen and kept rambling on. "And I'm worried that no one forgives me for what I did and they all hate me-" Three tried to calm him down. "Four would you just-"
"IT JUST HAS TO BE PERFECT!!!" Four breaks down and starts sobbing uncontrollably. "SMG4! WOULD YOU JUST LISTEN TO ME!" Four stops from his breakdown to look into Three's red ruby eyes. He was softly holding Four's hand and rubbing his finger to calm him down. "I understand you feel that way, but remember what I said?" Four nods while Three wipes the tears off his face. "No matter what you make, we will always be here to have fun and laugh together."
The two stand in silence for a while till Four speaks up. "I know. I'm just scared it will happen again..." Three lets go of his hand, disappointed. "I understand if you need some space. I'll just leave you alone if that's what you want." He leaves the room to go join the others, abandoning Four to be by himself. Why did he just let Three leave like that? Should he have said something differently? Now he was even more hurt. Letting this whole situation affect his friends like that. They were all having a great time till he ruined it all.
He went back into the hall to sit back down. "Oh Four you're back!" Meggy piped up. "Three told us you want some space. You're still welcome to play with us if you'd like." This time Four wouldn't say a word as he just shook his head and faced the other way. He could hear his friends laughing and having a good time behind him. He wouldn't interfere this time. He wouldn't spoil it for them. They deserved to be happy.
You don't deserve that happiness...Not after what you did...
