Kirk bod appreciation #4: The Curves. The Back. Poetry in motion. 

Here we honour the Kirk ‘hourglass’. The broad shoulders tapering into that lower back - and then flaring out again at those hips. Those HIPS. Those hips DO NOT lie. He has a broad back and such proportioning that one doesn’t always notice his hips aren’t so typically narrow, but stand him next to Bones or Spock - or even the girls - and just look at how endowed they are. Hot news: men have hips! And boy, is that hot. AND as if they weren’t gorgeous enough just existing in this flawless form, he actually swings them. Can we just correct another bro-ism: Kirk does not ‘swagger’. Kirk swings his hips. Like a sassy bih. This is one of the many reasons why James Kirk is special and utterly precious. 

Season 3 is the icing on the cake: he fills out a little, everything fits that bit tighter, and WOW. Look at that TURN, and the peek of the taut, firm Tum™. Hello friend, welcome. Kirk has what one might call the ‘bubble tum’, like the ‘bubble butt’. Thicc from the back AND front. Indeed, the shrink-wrapped glutes go without saying - it is a crime that we are never gifted, despite the shirts ripping constantly, a single moment of those *pants* ripping. That ass not able to be contained, bursting for freedom like his nips in Amok Time (which didn’t at all have sexual connotations…NOT AT ALL). Spock blushing bright green. Bones rolling his eyes.

Now don’t be thinking these are just dribble-posts, like the bros do over the girls; no. This lightly humoured appreciation is partly in response to those who criticise Kirk’s weight and build. Criticise WHAT I hear you cry??! I know. I don’t get it either. So here we are. Kirk, our intelligent, compassionate bookworm; our soft, smiling, curvaceous, chubby hunk who don’t need no six pack to be Jim Kirk. It’s part of his character; it’s part of his physical presence, how he moves, how he walks. How he proudly inhabits that bod - and what that says about him. He’s a man, he’s unbound; he’s his own version. He communicates, enviably, body confidence incarnate, while busting stereotypes and being utterly true. What an icon. We love him and celebrate his beauty inside and out.

I don’t have a specific Anxious Jim head canon (yet), but I was wondering if you could explain to me this common fanon idea about Jim’s anxiety with food? What is it based on? I’m not trying to argue, I’m just curious!!

For sure. 

So we have confirmation that in The Original Series, Jim was on Tarsus IV. Tarsus IV was a colony settlement that was hit by a severe famine after their crops were blighted in 2246. The governor of the colony, Kodos, panicked and made the decision to save half the colony (around 4,000) by exterminating the other half in favor of survival for the “better” of the colonists, based purely on eugenics.  

Staging a political coup and taking full control of the settlement, he made two lists: one list of who would be allowed to live, and another of those who would be sentenced to die. Gathering up the latter half, he delivered an address to the colonists: 

“The revolution is successful. But survival depends on drastic measures. Your continued existence represents a threat to the well-being of society. Your lives mean slow death to the more valued members of the colony. Therefore, I have no alternative but to sentence you to death. Your execution is so ordered, signed Kodos, Governor of Tarsus IV.” 

This event came to be known as “The Sacrifice”, and just over 4,000 people were put to death in one fell swoop. 

Supplies and aid came sooner than anticipated. The Sacrifice was not necessary, but corrupt politics and eugenics had already taken their toll. Jim Kirk– as well as Kevin Riley– were survivors of the massacre. They are among 9 survivors that can positively identify Kodos the Executioner on sight. 

We do not know which list Jim was one, but fanon suggests that Jim– a young teen at the time of the massacre– rounded up those he could find and did his best to take care of them. He called them “his kids”, and he put himself at risk to provide them with what little food and shelter he could. 

The Alternate Original Series has made brief, fleeting mention of Tarsus in Into Darkness, and fanon has decided that as there are constants in every timeline, Jim was most likely on Tarsus then, as well. 

As such, having been in a highly stressful and traumatizing situation for an undetermined amount of time, fighting for survival and denied adequate food and nutrition, it stands to reason that Jim has some food issues.

Bread and Circuses. This…vision appears. The hips, again. You know that thing where you see a really nice curve on something, and it’s just…pleasing? It’s just…nice. There’s harmony in the world and it’s calming and right. It could be the s-curve of a car, or a meandering river viewed from 30,000 feet, or the simple arc of a leaf. Or Captain Kirk’s hourglass. Look at his lines. We celebrate this on the feminine form a lot, but masculine curves? This is where Kirk is wonderful. There’s this whole dance of masculine-feminine and what is masculine or feminine anyway? Who gets to define that? And look at the…chest. Look at those shadows from a distance. Aren’t they just. I mean seriously. And the pinnacle. The Tum™. The tum is very important, and important that we stand up to the people who put him down for The Thicc, and say back the heck up here. Back right up. How DARE you. Let’s just all take a moment to love this bod, and love anyone who has this kind of bod, you are lovely and perfect. 

Let’s talk about this wrap now. This wrap is brilliant. The wrap is one of the greatest items of clothing from the 20th/23rd century. Look at how this is the absolute perfect thing to dress this man in. Look how flattering it is, how it shows off all his beautiful things. Thank you, William Ware Theiss, for this legacy. The wonderful gay costume designer for Star Trek. Thank you, wherever your energy now resides in the universe. And screw you, world, for making it impossible to find clothes like this irl. Interestingly, wrap tops can be found but tend to be exclusively in the femme section of clothes stores. Now there’s another fun gender thing, which adds to the theory of Kirk being expressively non-binary.

Extra: lol at McCoy for looking just like Mr Bean in these hilariously unfortunate screencaps. He’s beautiful too, of course, but in a different way. I’ll leave the Bones-love to someone else…

ok so i'm obsessed with film making allusions to famous works of art and the symbolism of certain pieces and all that pretentious shit.

so i haven't been able to stop thinking about, if peter died, erik holding his body like michelangelo's pietà, which is the one where mary is cradling jesus' body after he's crucified. and it's literally one of my favorite things to see referenced in movies since it connotes kind of a mix of tragic loss of innocent life and a heroic death. and i just can't get peter draped over erik's lap like that out of my head.

and if the shot started close on erik's broken face then pulled away slowly until it was a very symmetrical wide shot as all the metal around him starts vibrating violently-
