Gravity Falls Lore Is Actually So Crazy Because We Can Assume That Around When Stan Was Trying To Chew

Gravity Falls lore is actually so crazy because we can assume that around when Stan was trying to chew his way out of the trunk of a car, Ford was in the midst of the most gut-wrenching, one-sided, cringe-fail situationship known to man.

In Journal 3, Ford mentions that he used to mess up Fiddleford's Rubik's Cube as soon as it was solved. Fidds solved it pretty easily no matter how much Ford tried to mess it up, but I liked to think Fiddleford had enough at some point 😂

I'm only asking this because you said you want to draw some Billford and now I'm thinking about it. It seems to me that Bill would bring Ford extremely upsetting presents (like a cat) and Ford (like a cat owner) would be disgusting/horrified, but charmed despite himself. Am I correct? Also, would the same thing happen in reverse

Yeah that's basically where they're at in canon lol. Buuut my goal's to write them struggling & clawing past their toxic history to reach a place where they work.

And when they work, I think usually Bill gives Ford gifts that should horrify him, but that he only finds charming, because these two freaks are on the same wavelength. And same goes in reverse.

A partially colored Gravity Falls comic. Panel one: human Bill Cipher, sitting with his back pressed to a line of trees and hands shielding his face defensively, says, "Look, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to invade your weird nest kingdom (while you were home). Let me go and I promise it will never happen again!" An angry grayish-brown bird person flying in front of the trees says "No ground walkers enter my kingdom and leave unchanged! Which do you choose: my dungeon or my curse?"
Bill says "Rrrgh fine! I'll take your stupid curse!" The bird guy says "Cawwhahaha! Excellent! Tell me your name, that I may curse it!" Panel two: Bill stares in consternation. Panel three: Bill says "... Wait, so. Whatever name I give you, you're gonna curse it?" Off screen the bird guy says "Yes, that's how it works. So what is it?" Panel four: Bill's eyebrows shoot up.
Panel five: Ford Pines glances back over his shoulder and says "Bill? Is that you?" Bill's hanging off the side of a doorway as he comes into the room and says "Yello! Didja miss me?" Ford says "I've been looking for you. Where were you all day?" Bill says "Doesn't matter! More importantly, I got you a little something while I was out." Ford says "What?"
Panel six: Bill leans heavily against Ford's side, head leaning on his shoulder, hands laced, heel kicking up playfully, and says, "A curse!" Panel seven: Bill kicks his foot out and pokes Ford in the nose and says "It's on you!" Ford looks unimpressed.

(there's another five pages under the cut)

Panel eight: arms crossed, Ford asks, "What kind of curse?" Bill smugly holds out a piece of paper and says "The owl prince's kind. To break it, you have a week to finish his three trials and return to his throne. And you'll be turning into a bird the whole time." Panel nine: jaw dropped and eyes wide with shock, Ford grabs Bill's shoulders and startles him. Panel ten: Ford raises his fists triumphantly, the paper clutched in one hand, while Bill grins and says "I thought you might like that." Panel eleven: excitedly, Ford says, Do you know how long I've been hunting that illusive feathery bastard?" Bill shrugs and rolls an eye as he says "'Course I do! You've been griping about him since '79!" Ford says "And now he'll have no choice but to meet me!"
Panel twelve: Ford holds Bill romantically, cupping his face, and says "You do so much for me, my muse. I've never thanked you enough," and then kisses Bill. Panel thirteen: it's revealed that the previous panel was Bill's thought bubble as he stares creepily at Ford, who's reading the paper and babbling excitedly. Only part of Ford's babble can be read as he says, "And his first trial is to find the golden mouse?! I've been looking for the map to it for years! If we hurry I can retrieve it and have time to take notes before ... curse has progressed too far ... me to handle the second trial ... I still have my hands and my mind, I should be able to complete all the tests..." Bill thinks to himself "I'm not getting any action for this, am I."
Panel fourteen: Bill leans on Ford with his cheek pressed to Ford's, one hand on his shoulder, and the other draped over his arm, and he says "Say! Didn't you say you were looking for me?" Panel fifteen: Ford digs into his pocket while Bill watches and says "Right, I almost forgot. I went to that dead vampire sorcerer's estate sale today." Panel sixteen: Ford gets out of Bill's grip and drops a glass eye with a golden iris in Bill's palm. Bill stares at it as Ford says, "As we suspected, his vampiric sire is still slumbering in the basement coffin. Here. I happened to notice his glass eye was your color, and he isn't using it now, so... Oh, and--I drilled a hole in it. In case you want to make it into jewelry, or something. (That seems like the kind of thing you and Mabel do together.)" Panel seventeen: Bill stares up at Ford with hearts in his eyes.

In billford as "toxic exes who get under each other's skin because they know each other so well," having them constantly bickering and getting on each other's nerves works just fine. But when they're actually a couple, I like to see them like each other. Enjoy each other's company and do things for each other that they appreciate.

Even if it's batshit by outsiders' standards, it needs to work for them. Bill knows when Ford would love to be cursed and Ford sees weird gross body parts and knows "Bill would want this."

Panel eighteen: Ford writes in his journal as he asks "Does the curse give me wings? When do the wings come in?" Bill admires the glass eye as he says, "Day 6." Ford says "Aw." Bill says "The first sign of the curse is feathers replacing your hair. Those should already be coming in." Panel 19: Ford glances up from his journal and says "No?" Bill holds the glass eye in front of his real eye to pretend he's staring with it and says "No? Are you sure?" Ford says "I think I'd know if I was growing feathers. Are you sure feathers come first?" Panel 20: both Ford and Bill turn to look as Stan Pines comes in, arms held out awkwardly with his hair and body hair turning into ruffled gray feathers. He says "Hey, Ford... Does my hair look hairier than usual?"
Panel 21: Bill and Ford stare silently with looks of wide eyed shock. Panel 22: ford points at Bill with his pen and says "Are you sure the curse is on me?" Bill flings up his hands and says "Sure I'm sure! He said he'd curse whoever I named, and I said Stanford!" Ford says "Then it must be in how the curse identifies names. Perhaps the magic is based on the name on your driver's license? Or the quantity of people who recognize you by a name?" Bill says "Heck if I know! I've never had to check in on how this guy operates! Maybe the owl prince asked a gnome to point out "Stanford Pines"?" Ford says "Anything's possible!" Off screen, Stan says "Uhh... What was that about a curse?" Ford says "Hold on Stanley, we have to get to the bottom of this name business." Stan says "Hoo boy..."

THE CHILDREN YEARN FOR THE MINES

THE CHILDREN YEARN FOR THE MINES

Yknow rewatching gravity falls makes you realize how batshit insane Ford truly was

1. Lights his face on fire instead of shaving because “it’s faster”

2. Suggests Rudolph should’ve murdered the other reindeer for making fun of him

3. Had a situationship with a triangle

I love Stan's relationship with the kids so much.

GF emphasizes a lot of very real trauma in Stan's past. Everything from child abuse, homelessness, drug abuse, and survival sex work. And the way that meshes with Mabel being this truly genuine depiction of a weird little girl creates something that is very unique to the series.

It's really touching how Mabel just being Mabel heals Stan's inner child and the way he naturally clicks with her. The weird and creative little boy he used to be, before his father's abuse and toxic masculinity beat that joy and optimism out of him.

It's just damn good. It's a really beautiful depiction of an intergenerational relationship. And I haven’t really seen anything else quite like it. Because there’s also Dipper.

There’s this wall between Stan and Dipper that goes beyond his similarities with Ford and its gender.

Dipper is a boy and Stan clearly doesn’t really know how to handle that. He was taught that boys are raised in a very specific way. And like we see how Stan really struggles with his past, the way he talks about the boxing lessons in particular.

Masculinity is so deeply entwined with Stan's pain and it’s something he can’t easily unravel. How is he supposed to be able to criticize his father for 'toughing him up' when he feels like punching things is one of the only things he’s good at? It's fucking sad.
