My latest Terrible* DnD Campaign idea:

Scaling Hard "Nuzlocke" Mode.

We're gonna take the entire XP mechanic and through it out the fucking window.

Everyone starts at level one, but they make a backup character at the next level. They play that first character at level one until shit gets too hard and they die. No rezzes. Next available opportunity, bring in the backup level two character. Player makes a new backup, at level three.

So on, so forth.

The only way to level up is to die. The core goals/challenges are:

be the lowest level character to make it to the end of the campaign

get to explore a whole lot more classes and characters than you would normally

conversely, deal with the gritty reality of how dangerous this life of adventure is as so many of your party keeps falling

meta-wise, built in scaling system for less skilled players: die a lot? wind up stronger and stronger more quickly to balance it out

something something Ship Of Theseus adventurers guild?

Game-Changing Sites for Writers

A recent search for a specific type of site to help me build new characters led me down a rabbit hole. Normally, that would make me much less productive, but I have found a treasure trove of websites for writers.

Bring Characters/Places to Life

There are a few different places you can use to create a picture of something entirely new. I love this site for making character pictures as references, instead of stock photos or whatever pops up on Google Images.

thispersondoesnotexist: every time you reload the page, this site generates a headshot of someone who doesn't exist. This is great if you're thinking about a character's personality or age and don't have specifics for their facial features yet.

Night Cafe: this is an AI art generator that takes your text prompt and generates an image for it. I tried it for various scenery, like "forest" or "cottage." It takes a minute for your requested photo to load, but no more than maybe five for the program to finish the picture.

Art Breeder: this website has endless images of people, places, and general things. Users can blend photos to create something new and curious visitors can browse/download those images without creating an account. (But if you do want to make an account to create your own, it's free!)

Find Random Places on Earth

You might prefer to set a story in a real-life environment so you can reference that place's weather, seasons, small-town vibe, or whatever you like. If that's the case, try:

MapCrunch: the homepage generates a new location each day and gives the location/GPS info in the top left of the screen. To see more images from previous days, hit "Gallery" in the top left.

Atlas Obscura: hover over or tap the "Places" tab, then hit "Random Place." A new page will load with a randomly generated location on the planet, provide a Google Maps link, and tell you a little bit about the place.

Random World Cities: this site makes randomly selected lists of global cities. Six appear for each search, although you'll have to look them up to find more information about each place. You can also use the site to have it select countries, US cities or US states too.

Vary Your Wording

Thesauruses are great, but these websites have some pretty cool perspectives on finding just the right words for stories.

Describing Words: tell this website which word you want to stop repeating and it will give you tons of alternative words that mean the same thing. It typically has way more options than other sites I use.

Reverse Dictionary: type what you need a word for in Reverse Dictionary's search box and it will give you tons of words that closely match what you want. It also lists the words in order of relevancy, starting with a word that most accurately describes what you typed. (There's also an option to get definitions for search results!)

Tip of My Tongue: this website is phenomenal. It lets you search for that word you can't quite place by a letter in it, the definition, what it sounds like, or even its scrambled letters. A long list of potential options will appear on the right side of the screen for every search.

---

Hope this helps when you need a hand during next writing session 💛

So This Is A Cheat-sheet I’ve Made For Personal Use To Just Have An Overview Over All The Basic D&D

So this is a cheat-sheet I’ve made for personal use to just have an overview over all the basic D&D rules. The first page covers most of the text rules. The color divides the sections more or less from one another.

The second page covers most of the important tables and stats, that you’ll probably need through the game. Hope you like it and find some use for this! Cheers.

The Swirling Blade Glows With Flame, Imbued With Powers Of Metallic Magic Powered By The Genasi’s Ancient

The swirling blade glows with flame, imbued with powers of metallic magic powered by the genasi’s ancient ancestors. As she chops the treants to bits with her scorching magical strikes, the smell of bonfire reminds her of home.

I have always loved forge-based subclasses, and really I think only forge domain cleric currently does the theme much justice among official classes. I figured that sorcerer becoming a whirling gish of metal and magic seemed like a good way to start! The updated homebrewery link is here, while the permanent PDF of the above image is here. Hope you all enjoy, and please leave your comments and feedback!

Monster Hunt: Goudslok The Gorger

Monster hunt: Goudslok the Gorger

“ Fellers, yer not going to ‘alieve this, but I was siftin through all this pickrel and I think I found me ol’ keys, how’d ya think they ended up ‘ere?”

Setup: The gnomish village on the shore of a great lake is seasonally plagued by the appearance of a tremendous golden carp. Nicknamed “the gorger” by the locals, this golden monstrosity emerges from the depths to devour all the fish at the height of the catching season before returning to the muddy deep for another year.

Furious after years of plundered nets, a fishergnome by the name of Lennart Trawley has found the biggest boat he could, gathered a crew full of cousins, and stockpiled an arsenal of harpoons and cable. He’s still looking for a few strong backs to aid in his Ahabic vengeance quest and the party look like viable candidates for a pressganging.

Adventure Hooks

While the Gorger is an easy enough quarry to find, catching it is another matter. The massive fish is capable of splintering hulls with a slap of its tail and causing weaker vessels to tip over with its trashing. What’s more, no mundane line or net is capable of holding the creature, as it seems preternaturally able to break any bond forced upon it. If the party manages to pick themselves up out of their first sodden defeat, they may wish to seek out artisans capable of crafting unbreakable or otherwise enchanted fishing gear, perhaps a blacksmith that works in adamantine or a fey tinker who can spin a promise into a rope?

Not one to waste a good catch, Trawley and his crew will pull Goudslok’s body to shore for the butchering, revealing a belly full of still-wriggling fish as well as a trove of strange objects The gorger has seemingly scavenged off the lakebed. loose coins and gemstones, bewitched items, even a still-locked treasure chest, a portion of wish the party will be allotted a share based on their participation, along with as much fish as they can carry. Some of these items include: the ring of a rivergod who’d very much like it back, oddly familiar keys that open doors to places they shouldn’t go, and a weighty, invulnerable breastplate that compels its wearer to go swimming against their better judgement.

Goudslok is not a normal fish, as anyone can tell, but few could guess that its true origin lays somewhere in the feywild. To be swallowed by this great, glimmering beast is to be spat up on those shores of primal wonder, as the party may discover should their hunt go very, very badly. Likewise, slaying the beast in the mortal realm is not enough, as it will continue to return each year unless slain in its home domain. Doing so is easier said than done, and may require bargaining with whatever fey lord keeps the now miniaturized gorger as a pet.

COLLEGE OF THE OCEAN’S CALL — Heard Y’all Liked Sea Shanties… In All Seriousness, This Is The

COLLEGE OF THE OCEAN’S CALL — heard y’all liked sea shanties… in all seriousness, this is the first official homebrew i’ve put out in a long time and it’s probably going to be a divisive one because of that 14th level 😂. like i said in my author’s note, i’m not super interested in debating the mechanics on this post. instead, i’m more interested in the flavor of an ocean themed bard that takes on aspects of the supporting their crew with a strong voice and hearty songs, with the entrancing powers of a deep sea siren.

Settlement: The Flamefond Peaks Of Promtharra
Settlement: The Flamefond Peaks Of Promtharra

Settlement: The Flamefond peaks of Promtharra

“Fire is and always has been the mortal element. Like us it breathes, it eats, it flares and flourishes and dies. We Understand one another, and we smiths of Promtharra understand that better than most.”

Setup: Built around a number of free flowing volcanic crests, the scattered villages, spires, and foundries collectively known as Promtharra are famous the world over for their artisans. A powerful layline of primeval magic runs through the region, allowing their culture to develop a deep understanding of its elemental nature without fear of being burned or buried in a sudden, cataclysmic eruption.

More than simple trade secrets, what sets those who learn their craft in Promtharra apart is their practice of shamanistic-smithing, an art of communing with the elements involved in a particular work to go beyond shaping it physically and begin to affect it on a metaphysical level. In this way the Promtharrans are able to make unbreakable armor without the need for costly adamantine, or create blades that retain the heat of the forge for years withouth losing any of their solidity or edge.

While the skill of their hands has ensured the people of Promtharra exist in relative comfort ( living atop a mountain that alternates between burning and freezing does give itself over to a degree of ruggedness), their isolation and virtual independence is due to the compact they have with the dragons that live in the region. Rather than fighting for territory or control, the dragons and the people strive together for the benefit of their collective home, often working side by side in the forges, or venturing out together on hunts. Legends surrounding the mountains often include moments where on the eve of a great and fateful battle or trial, a messenger from the Flamefond peaks arrives on dragon-wing to present the hero with some life-saving weapon or tool.

Adventure Hooks:

If the party seek something mythical repaired or sundered, Promtharra is a good place to start. Between the cumulative skills of generations of smiths and “chucking it in a volcano”, the full spectrum of creation and destruction is available. Of those who could aid in this task, “Reiko Winterschilde” is the fist name on anybody’s lips:  a masterful smith with an undeniably strong connection to the elements, but Reiko has recently fallen into a desperate spiral of depression and worry. After her son accepted the invocation of a foreign ruler to act as his master artisan, the two communicated back and forth for months as the younger Winderschilde grew accustomed to his new position. It has been a year since the last message, it has been nearly half a year since the last message, and the master-smith is half dead with concern. If the party can find out what happened to the wayward journeyman, Reiko will ensure that they are well equipped and may even tutor the party’s crafter in the fundamentals of her shamanic practice.

While in the region, they may be approached by an agent of the draconic historian Ilzaadorant, a collector of interesting trinkets and historical curios who may offer to buy any of the artifacts they’ve collected in their travels. A shameless bookwyrm, Ilzaadorant ( Or “Izzy” as the locals call him) is interested in mementos of far of and long forgotten culture, and pulls double duty as a merchant of magic items, swapping more curious oddities for “boring” practicalities the adventurers may find useful.   Given that he can’t fly out to the largest settlements without getting shot out of the sky as a feral drake, Ilzaadorant is willing to recruit the party as his gobetweens,

The grand peaks of Promtharra are carved into spires and cathederasls of volcanic stone, with channels, aqueducts, and even fountains constructed to properly bleed off the ever molten blood of the mountains. Most of structures are occupied by the dragonbroods, or by pyromancers seeking a more palpable connection with their element, but others lay abandoned to structural instability or uncontrollable lava flow. These derilict towers are begging for exploration, though an adventurous party will need to be cautious. Rogue elementals and feral dragon-kin are not the only dangers, as too much damage to the wrong wall could have the chamber filled with scalding steam or see the entire dungeon begin to flood with lava from the top down.

Deity: The Walker Of The Wheel

Deity: The Walker of the Wheel

“ Traveler! Why don’t you pull up a stone and rest your weary self, Come share a tale, join me in a song.  Between us there are as many miles to go as there are stars uncounted, but maybe we can number a few of them before we’re through”.

Setup: There are some gods that demand the worship of all, who seek to spread their gospals to the four corners of the earth. Then there are the small gods, the humble guardians who preside over their little corner of reality and ensure those who journey through it are well taken care of.

The Walker of the Wheel is one of the latter, a guardian god of roads, travelers, and the infinite horizon who protects those who venture far from home. Appearing as a broken down tramp, a traveling mapmaker, or an adventurous youth, the Walker eschews a concrete identity or even a name, preferring to intercede in the guise of a fellow wanderer rather than act through miracles or celestial agents.

Holding no temples save for the small roadside shrines erected by fellow travelers, the existence of the Walker is lore held only by those who live their lives on the road, cobbled together out of scraps of road-lore and tales of secondhand encounters.

Astral travelers are also known to draw the attention of the Walker, who holds stewardship over forgotten gateways between the realms.

Adventure Hooks:

Exhausted and woefully lost with darkness closing in, the party hears the plucking of an old guitar drifting across the landscape, leading them to a small campsite and the hermit who presides over it. The old codger offers them hospitality and a drag off his jug of barleywine, in exchange for their tales of adventure and woe.   When the party awakes in the morning, they’ll find the Walker gone and themselves a stonesthrow from their destination, having crossed valleys and rivers in the span of a single night.

Those that impress the Walker are likely to be rewarded with good luck charms touched by a bit of his divine grace. Dented compasses that point the way home, guitar picks that conjure visions of the past when used to strum a nostalgic song, well worn walking sticks that allow for tireless travel over harsh terrain. These items all show evidence of having many owners in the past, as well as handetched patterns of stars and constellations.

While generally a god of good spirits, the Walker cannot stand those who prey upon travelers, and woe to any robber or highwayman who draw his attention.  The party bears witness to this wrath when bandits attack their inn, hoping to kidnap and ransom a merchant who also happens to be staying there for the night. The Walker appears partway through this standoff, and with a strike of his stick dissolves the bandit’s leader into a pile of road dust.
