“They-uh, they would have been,” Vi said as evenly as she could. “They died several years ago.” Tobias’ eyes melted into a swirl of sympathy. “Oh, I’m so sorry, Vi.” Vi did her best to keep a neutral face. The Kirammans may not have pulled the trigger on her parents, but they still played a role in their deaths and they didn’t even realize it. The anger and resentment she had—would probably always have—flared up. She looked up and saw Caitlyn give her an encouraging smile. Then there was this girl. Who was trying her best to convince Vi that she did want what’s best for Zaun, that she wanted to help. Could one person do it? Vi wondered. Her parents were one of many revolutionaries and they failed. But they tried changing things from the bottom up. Could it happen from the top down?
Vi stared at the woman. For a long, long minute. To the councilor’s credit, she did not squirm or repeat herself. The teenager let out an uncomfortably chuckle, unsure how else to react. Vi would have been less surprised if the councilor had asked her to pose naked as an art installation at the Gala. “I’m sorry,” Vi said very carefully. “You just asked me, a sump-raker who has only–” “Violet, I really must say, I truly dislike how often you refer to yourself in such derogatory terms,” the councilor interrupted in an unhappy tone. Vi rolled her eyes. “You want me, an orphan Zaunite born in the deepest depths of the fissures and who tried to rob you, to be Caitlyn Kiramman’s—your daughter’s—date to one of the most extravagant Piltover high society celebrations of the year?” Vi asked, hoping the woman would hear how ludicrous that sounded. “Yes,” Councilor Kiramman said with no hesitation.
Councilor Kiramman has a potentially awkward request to make of Vi. Vi finds herself at the Kiramman Manor, again, to speak with Caitlyn about her mother's awkward request.
“Did you send me on this assignment because I’m from Zaun?” Vi asked, slowly and carefully. Councilor Kiramman seemed a little surprised by the question as blue eyes widened ever so slightly, but then steeled themselves as she answered once she collected herself a split second later with a simple, “yes.” Vi stared at the woman incredulously for a few tense seconds. Then she stood up and ran her fingers through her hair, forcing herself to calm down. “Violet, what’s the matter?” the councilor asked and her gods damned worried tone only managed to anger Vi further. Vi met the councilor’s blue eyes and scoffed at her audacity to be confused. “A moment of honesty?” Vi asked, her fury barely held at bay. The councilor didn’t assure Vi that she could always be honest again. The realization in the woman’s eyes told Vi that the councilor had now caught on to what Vi was really asking. Do you truly want to hear what I have to say? “A moment of honesty,” Kiramman repeated confidently.
Vi is asked to do a strange and potentially dangerous assignment for Councilor Kiramman. Caitlyn has some eye opening experiences. Vi's errand leads to a surprising conversation with the councilor.
Chapter Summary: Vander has to leave for a few days and Vi needs to bring Powder with her to Jayce's. Caitlyn opens up a little to Vi.
In order to avoid time in Stillwater Prison, Vi must complete community service after getting caught stealing from Jayce Talis, the protégé of the wealthy and intelligent Councilor Cassandra Kiramman. Instead of spending her nights working at The Last Drop and her days looking after her siblings in Zaun, she now has to be the errand girl to one of the most powerful people in Piltover. However, Vi soon realizes that something isn’t right. What secret project is Jayce working on? Why does the councilor keep sending Vi on strange assignments? And why won’t Caitlyn Kiramman leave Vi alone about what life is like in Zaun? Something is festering in the underbelly of both cities and Vi is beginning to suspect that the Kirammans know more than anyone realizes. OR A story of what could have happened if Hextech was never invented (with some liberties taken with both LoL and Arcane canon).
Powder answered. “You need to separate CT02 and 03. They should never be mixed in their pure forms. Dilution is key to decreasing destabilization. Chem is volatile, but once you break down the compounds to their weakest and spread the power out throughout the machine you use it in, to avoid too much heat build up, you should be fine.”
Powder handed Jayce back the newly edited paper and he read it as if it held the answers to the universe itself. “I need to test this for myself,” he stated. He looked at Vi, with an almost ecstatic excitement. “Vi! Oh, Caitlyn, when did you get here? Doesn’t matter. Vi, I need CT02 and 03. Do you know where to find that in Zaun?”
Vi looked at Powder with a raised eyebrow. Powder smirked. Vi groaned. “Don’t. Don’t say it.”
Powder cackled. “Viktor always has Chemtech compounds on hand, Vi. I’m sure he’d love to see you.”
“Great! Vi, I need you to go to this Viktor and get me CT02 and 03, ten pounds of each compound,” Jayce instructed. “I’ll want plenty to work with and with some left over for back up.”
Vi scoffed. “Ten pounds each? I can’t carry that much weight all the way back with my crutch. Can’t we send a courier?”
Jayce shook his head. “Sorry, Vi, but I can’t let anyone else knowing what I’m doing. Councilor’s orders.”
“I’ll help,” Caitlyn volunteered, her smile far too sweet for Vi’s liking.
I love the Zaun art I found on the LoL wiki when looking up information to write my fic. It's such a fascinating place and while I loved what Arcane created for Zaun, these photos make it seem like so much bigger! Decided to share just because this art is so incredible that I needed to nerd out about how inspiring it is for my fic.
This is what I imagine the Rising Howl, the elevator that goes from Topside to the Fissures.
Art of The Gray in every day life in Zaun.
Example of the architecture of Zaun--so sick!
Amazing view of how sprawling and massive Zaun actually is (that's Piltover all the way up top)! So much to work with!
The Boundary Markets from below. In the bottom left-middle, you can see what I've placed the Rising Howl on its cable being lowered into the depths of Entresol (unsure if that's actually the Rising Howl).
View of what I've decided is the mid-levels of Entresol. Not sure if I'm understanding the actual LoL canon layout of Zaun, so I've just filled in what I've read with my own ideas. Entresol is the name of the fissure that Vi and family lives in with the Lanes being second the last level.
View of how the Sun Gates connect two different oceans. I interpret it as a much steeper, more complicated version of the Panama Canal.
All the levels of Entresol. It's so vibrant and alive and diverse in comparison to Piltover. I love the dichotomy of these two cities so much.

Chapter 7: Vi attends a council meeting for her second day working for Councilor Kiramman.

So I’ve done a thing and have written almost 30,000 words in three days. I’m addicted to writing this. It won’t be as heavy as the show is, I don’t think, and I already have a chapter by chapter plan for where it’s going.
This is a slow burn with a lot of characters other than Caitlyn and Vi being the focus at times. But don’t worry, they’re still a very prominent feature and the main ship, they just won’t be the only thing being focused on. So there may be whole chapters where they don’t speak or interact.
I made this tumblr to share the story and talk about it outside of the comments section of ao3 if anyone wants it, but I’m honestly not a huge fan of any social media so not sure how active I’ll be on it outside of posting updates and answering people about what I’ve written (without sharing spoilers for upcoming chapters).
Hope I don’t regret it 😅
