favorite thing about them: you know the thing tumblr user soutsuji said about her being the opposite of a babygirl i.e. a depressed middle-aged man in a midlife crisis. yeah. I think I'm really really fond of how she's always just — trying so hard. she wants to do good; she wants to be good at what she does. she's a cringe failgirl and is unashamed of that (for the most part). she's goodnatured and kind. she's snarky when she wants to be. she's so haunted with grief and confusion and dare I say, loneliness. I just love her so much.

small ayatsuji rant. i do wish gaiden gave us more insight into his inner turmoil which is of course difficult since the novel is mostly told from tsujimura’s pov, and she often struggles to make sense of him. but just know i’m always thinking about: his hatred of criminals + him being referred to throughout the story as a criminal and a murderer and worse + him running away and setting himself up to be executed in order to protect tsujimura from his ability (before he knew about the shadow child). which is absolutely about his love for tsujimura to me but it’s also about his self-hatred. because how can you believe a murderer is vile while also believing all lives are of equal meaning—or lack thereof—and you’ve taken many more than he has? how can you reassure yourself you’re a good person who deserves to live, when the only other person who thinks that is about to die at your hands?
anyway. this is all an excuse to talk about my headcanon of his and kyougoku’s backstory. with it being heavily hinted that they have a long & tumultuous history, i like to believe his resentment of kyougoku stems from something deeper — i.e. kyougoku taking him under his wing when ayatsuji was first shunned for his ability (i’m thinking around the time of that official art of ayatsuji as a child. you know the one). kyougoku also having an ability deemed “evil” and demonic and yet being a respected professor, researcher, neighbor. a beacon of hope that you can be a good person in spite of the ability fate handed to you. ayatsuji taking solace in that, just to notice the person he looks up to is always surrounded by mysterious deaths. always at the wrong place at the wrong time, but never conclusively enough to be held responsible. manipulating things behind the scenes. the betrayal of finding out your one hope that you aren’t the nature of your ability is desperate to manifest into one of the evil spirits he controls. if kyougoku did end up becoming a yokai in the end, then maybe you really are the god of death, the cold-blooded reaper, and always have been. maybe that hope of yours was futile from the beginning. and if that’s the case, then the least you can do is make sure your final act is saving a life, when all you’ve ever done is take it.

unpopular opinion: he’s honestly one of the most compelling antagonists in bsd to me. his motivations are so unique and well thought out. and he’s the kind of ultra intelligent where the mutual outsmarting of him and ayatsuji is convincing and doesn’t feel far-fetched the way fyozai’s tactics sometimes do. also i hope he’s actually old old and not another example of how bsd treats 45 y/os as if they’re 70

favorite thing about them: ohohoho. what if you devoted yourself entirely to someone for nothing in return. what if you were doomed to be drawn to each other and yet fundamentally incompatible i.e. akutagawa valuing devotion but resenting being protected/relying on others… higuchi desperate to understand the misunderstood and to fix those who are suffering but never getting that reassurance she needs that she’s Doing the Right Thing.
anyway. my favorite thing about her is the intensity of her emotion. the fact that akutagawa becomes more than just the object of her romantic feelings - he becomes her purpose, and this doesn’t even develop from mutual love. she keeps herself in constant danger in a place she doesn’t belong for it, because she’s in so deep that she’s not even looking out for him just out of affection anymore. he’s no longer just a crush, he’s what keeps her going. to give up on him would be to give up on herself. to me it’s a super compelling, almost a descent-into-madness kind of devotion that is even more delicious to me than the dazai-akutagawa fixation because for higuchi there are canonical romantic feelings and rose-colored glasses involved. she can justify the bad things he does not only because she wants to but because she has to. or else she has to confront her own stupidity
least favorite thing about them: the watering down of her character to tropes. the simultaneous demonization and infantilization of her by the fanbase. the way she’s made into more of an aggressor in her relationship with akutagawa than he is??????

random headcanon: somewhere, in a countryside of japan, lays the ruins of ayatsuji's childhood town. ayatsuji remembers most of his childhood peering through the glass windows of his mother's doll store, waiting for his father to arrive home. he remembers clinging a little tighter to the dolls in the store whenever a passerby gives him another nasty glare. it was always like that, ever since those accidents started. his last memory of that town is the pungent waft of iron, from the blood coating his head, dripping down his face, down his clothes and clutching onto his pale skin—and although his memory is crystal, even he cannot recall exactly what the townspeople were cursing onto him that night, he'd assume it to be vulgar nonsense. yet all his eyes could focus on is the moon, shining down onto his heaving body.
