Happy "the Decaying release date announcement day"!

I will be posting a page every Wednesday of the prologue of The Decaying! Starting February 28! It'll last the next 8 weeks, and after that DEPENDING on how much I have done, it may switch to biweekly! (Cause I don't want it to take 8 months to post 1 chapter...) , but I don't want to fall into burnout! I said new year new me but that somehow turned into making a webcomic and that's a lot of work!

Here is where I dump or information on the idea but I had to make these realllyyy fast sketches before I lost the idea. Fire and the coal they keep is sacred to them becasue it mirrors the Sun. The coal is especially used in festivals during Winter and Spring but they are also used during special ceremonies.

How the coal is treated also acts as a characterizer of each Clan. Wind Clan is more communal so apprentices and warriors can carry/place the coal. It is kept in a tunnel in the center of the clearing wall. For this reason, they all have general knowledge on how to create and fix masks. Rabbits feet may be used to decorate them or dried flowers.

In contrast, River Clan is more private and prioritizes keeping the coal sacred. This resembles how they interact with Star Clan believing that each cat has a more personal relationship with Star Clan, fesivals are more quiet and focused on calming and centering oneself. The coal is stored in an unmarked area which is moved if any other clan finds it on accident or on purpose. Medicine cats exclusively can touch or place the coal. The mask is equally sacred and can only be properly mended by a medicine cat although leaders can fill in if necessary. The making of a mask is taught to medicine apprentices.

Thunder Clan keeps the coal in the leaders den becasue they believe much of Star Clan's power is funneled through the leader. Leaders are expected to move and place coal, however, medicine cats make the masks. The coal is kept in the leaders den in a nook in the rock. Thunder Clan is known to have loud crackling bon fires.

Shadow Clan is more communal in terms of coal handling as well, however, masks are extremely sacred and can only be made/mended by medic cats. A charred and hollowed tree near the entrance is where they keep the coal. Clan specific festivals are completely exclusive and secretive unlike Wind Clan which is known to invite friendly members of other clans if they feel inclined. Bon fires are not common but they often cremate bodies on a small island that is surrounded by bog. Cremation is also common in River Clan.

Star Clan must bless a mask before it is used, this contributes to how long lasting they often are (the oldest being from Shadow Clan going back 10 generations). The coal, although it mirrors the Sun, is contrasted by the blue light glow of the moon stone so the fire of coal represents life while the moonstone represents soul and spirit.

In many ways, the coal makes the Clans somewhat dependent on eachother because if coal somehow goes out there is an obligation for any Clan asked to share. If, for whatever reason, this does not happen there is a small eternal fire in a cavern said to be located far beneath the moonstone, however, no one has had to travel here for a couple generations. The knowledge of this cavern is held by medicine cats.

It would be cool if each clan had an ember or a small fire they always keep going so certain festivals or ceremonies can include torches. it would also be something that is super sacred to each clan and keeps them all interconnected; if one clans flame somehow goes out can another clan let you use some of theirs?

If it does go out and other clans won’t share for whatever reason then you need to wait until the next fire in the forest. And do pick up the embers maybe there is a leather made from prey that can be worn around the mouth kinda like an oven mitt so it can be moved with minimal risk.

I think a clan fire/ember would add to the self sufficient society aspect of the WC clans and could add to the depth of their spiritual lives. It makes it especially interesting when you think about how their religion is confirmed real in their world. Each clan may keep their ember somewhere different (ex. Thunder clan keeping theirs in a rock tomb, Wind Clan keeping theirs in a tunnel in the middle of their camp…) and they all interact with the ember in a different way. Maybe only medicine cats can move an ember in Thunder Clan but in wind Clan because it is in the center of the clearing it is more of a communal sharing and honor for younger cats to carry it to light torches on fire.

Maybe the Sun is like the ember of star clan so during fall when the sun is setting earlier they don’t use it but during the winter they use it more to bring back the Sun (the ember of star clan) and during the spring they use it a lot, and during summer they don’t use it as much because the Sun is already out a lot. This could then make interesting plots where winter lasts longer than usual and rather than simply questioning why star clan would cause this they feel it is because they have not helped the sun rise enough with their ember.

Idk whether this would be something started by the founders or maybe around Firestar’s time or maybe it goes back before the founders. but i think something like this with a sacred object could add a lot to the society aspect of the clans and make it a little more cohesive. It could make the clans relationships to each other have higher stakes because if they went out on their own they would for sure not have access to another ember for a long time if it went out.

When i was thinking of this i was like okay that isn’t at all grounded in reality enough to be a cool headcanon but then i remembered they’re talking cats who talk to cat gods??? so i think it’s fine. also they use random plants to help with sometimes fake illnesses so if my HC breaks the universe a little that’s fine

there are not enough festivals in WC. It’s a society of cats and their only ‘festival’ is a monthly meeting? no i need cat season changing festivals. I need cat festivals that bring prey from StarClan.

There should be more rituals in WC surrounding battles and what to do with the bodies, idk what but somethinnggggg

Bro the build up for this scene, Darkstripe spends his whole life orbiting around Tigerstars approval and thinking that fallowing every order means that Tiger must care about him by default only for the truth to hit him in the face.

Like Fire was a crack in the manipulate "huh I guess Tigerstar was wrong about this kittypet." And then his kits "Tiger says halfclan kits are evil but mine are so innocent...how can their existence be wrong?"

And then Tiger just throws his kits in jail and all this tigerclan nonsense fbnsdnd

Maybe Tiger orders Darkstripe to kill Fire and his kits for the ultimate proving of his loyalty and It finally hits him "oh shit Tigerstar actually...doesn't give a shit about me woah" and because his Darkstripe he doesn't think it through and probably heads straight to Tigerstar for a confrontation and/or explanation, obviously wouldn't end well lol

Something about FireDark is the image of Fireheart trying to find a way to get through to Darkstripe then realizing this beast has not had positive reinforcement and decides to destroy him with praise, and also payback at Graystripe because he is a bit petty
