A Short Film About a Lonely Robot, Created Entirely From NASA Videos

It’s 2045, and a lone robot orbits Earth in a spaceship, left there by his human companions. He longs for his home on Earth, but knows he’ll never see it again. Tragic, huh? This is the story of Robbie, a sentient Catholic robot, and the subject of the short film Robbie from director Neil Harvey.

Pygmy Seahorses are tiny fish that have evolved to closely match their coral host’s appearance.  Adult Pygmy Seahorses usually measure less than 2cm in height.  Most species never leave their host coral,  feeding on minuscule plankton that drifts by,  but there are several free-swimming species.  Some dwarf species of seahorse are called “pygmy”,  but a true Pygmy Seahorse has a single gill opening and broods their young on the trunk.

As part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad, performance and installation artist Sue Austin created this series in which she—in her self-propelled underwater wheelchair—explored the magnificence of the underwater world, aiming to generate a widespread public debate about the nature and value of contemporary arts practice shaped by the experience of disability.

Artist’s statement: 

“My studio practice has, for sometime, centred around finding ways to understand and represent my embodied experience as a wheelchair user, opening up profound issues about methods of self-representation and the power of self-narration in challenging the nexus of power and control that created the ‘disabled’ as other.”
