I heard some discourse over whether the Curse of Achilles counts as immortality, and I am pretty sure it doesn't. The curse gives invulnerability, but I am unsure as to whether it stops natural aging. Does anyone have any reliable source they could cite, which either proves or disproves this? Cause Ogygia definitely counts as at least a pseudo form of immortality, I think, but whether the Achilles curse does or not is up for debate, I think. @deliajackson @ogjacksonsimp @fourcornersofcreation @fate-of-the-envious
If I had a nickel for every time Percy Jackson turned down immortality/godhood, I would have two nickels. Which is a lot, and it is absolutely iconic that it happened twice!
There's no problem with that. It's true. A lot of the characters have become underwhelming. I myself only liked Jason after I read a few fics exploring Jason's character. Because I agree that Rick does a shit job of portraying or highlighting Jason or many other key characters. I personally always used to see the take of Percy lovers hating on Jason and how wrong some anti Jason posts were, so I wanted to prove both of that wrong. I myself only enjoy Percy's character throughly throughout the books (not the new series, that's an abomination, even some parts of HoO are horrible but at least it's tolerable and has some great moments). I had love-hate moments with almost every other character, save for Hazel and Sadie. And some characters I do love have less or no proper exploration.
But no, I completely agree that certain characters fell flat. Personally, for me, Will Solace is such a character . This will probably enrage a few Solangelo fans. And Piper McLean who I absolutely disliked.
So let's finally talk about it. There's very few things that can actually make me mad on PJO fandom. Calling Percy dumb is the first one. It makes me seethe in rage. And among the other ones is calling Jason Grace boring.
What do you think is worse than trauma? You guessed it. Childhood trauma. Jason Grace is one of the most tragic PJO characters ever. You could almost say the quest with the Seven was one of the better things that happened to him.
Let's recap his life real quick.
Absolutely terrible mother who dumped him near Lupas territory when he was literally 2 years old. And the fact that he would be better off with Lupa than with Beryl Grace is just a testament to how shit of a mother and person she was.
Then he had to win Lupa's approval while she trained him when he was a literal toddler. If you think that's the end of it, it's not even close. Then he was sent to the camp. It was pleasant, as pleasant as a child-soldier factory can be. Which is not at all.
Being the son of Jupiter, he had insane expectations and prejudices forced upon him, along with a certain caged way of living. Fight a certain way, behave a certain way, think a certain way, and repeat. A monotonous, cyclic existence with no escape and no way for self thinking. After all, the Romans are about as creative as a marble is sharp. Imagine it, a child being raised in the legion, by the legion, molded to be the perfect soldier and Praetor who should have only the Legions benefit in mind with no opinions of his own.
Anyone, anyone would go insane and lose their mind because this is torture, complete, and utter torture. But do you know what's worse, that Jason didn't know how the world was supposed to be. Whatever he was used to living, he believed to be the normal thing. He had no idea the things that happened to him were wrong for a long time. In fact, he strived to be even more perfect, all for what? The approval of a god that was his father? A god he had never seen or heard from? That in itself is the tragedy of most Roman demigods or just demigods in general. But at least the Greek ones get to see them every once in a while.
I think Reyna was the first to see his as his own person and to give his individual opinions actual importance. Because she knew what it felt like to live a life of servitude and imprisonment. Under Circe and the pirates. I like to think that's how they bonded. By making each other's lives a bit happier than their former bleak prospects. And I bet they were super close. You can't convince me otherwise. Which is why I will never forgive Rick for ruining their relationship over Piper of all people.
4.
Then, of course, he was demigod too on top of that, so his life was obviously and decidedly terrible. Being sent on fatal missions? Having the responsibility of not only his own life but his comrades life thrust upon him? CAN YOU IMAGINE LIVING LIKE THAT?? THE ABJECT HORROR OF A LIFE LIKE THAT?
5.
If that's not enough his even more repulsive and terrible godly father fucking offers him to Hera to appease her rage like he is some sort of bloody object. An object to be sold. A fuckinhg APOLOGY GIFT. And then what does Hera do to him? She wipes his memories, sends him to a foreign land which was previously considered enemy territory by the Camp he grew up in, forces fake memories upon him of fake friends, and sent him on another death quest. But at least Leo was one of the nicer things about that whole situation. I won't be touching the wreck that is Jiper with a ten foot pole.
And on, of course, he also gets nearly killed by the same goddess he was offered to as an apology gift. If that was enough, he would find out about the existence of his sister who had grown up and gone her own way, thinking he was dead and now was basically a stranger to him? Yeah wow.
And then everything else from the series happens like dear God, him and Percy are practically drowning in trauma. With Hazel, Nico and then Leo after them.
But at least Percy had Sally (even though the reason he put up with Gabe and his mental and physical abuse was Sally) and even though he felt like Sally was always sending him away and no longer wanted him which was fair of him to think but a grave misunderstanding. Sally was still the best thing in his life. Percy had someone to live for something to live forward to even though he was practically almost dying every year, which kept adding to his trauma. And Poseidon, he cared, acknowledged, and helped Percy. The bare minimum and Poseidon actually did even more.
We can assume Jason also had similar experiences with neither a mother's unconditional love nor a god's genuine care and love.
I am not going to say the Camp point because being the son of Jupiter, Jason had certain assurances, but Percy was practically ostracized or badly treated till book 3.
The only good thing that happened in Jason's life was meeting Reyna, the other Seven, and being friends with them, Nico and his sister, and also not falling in Tartarus, so yeah man's living his best life.
So no Jason Grace isn't boring, he is the most in depth character who had his autonomy and childhood stolen, his interests and opinions razed and his entire life molded and shaped for him, turning his mind and body into a tool to serve so called greater interests of Gods and Camp Jupiter. It's like ridiculing a blind man for not being able to see.
Next time, think twice before making that absolutely thoughtless, mindless, wildly inaccurate and cruel comment ever again.
There's no need to blindly hate Jason cause you love Percy or on Percy cause you love Jason. Hell, Percy is my absolute favorite, 90% of my posts are about him, but Percy is awesome and arguably the best all by himself. This is also true for Jason's character. (I am probably the only one who thinks Jason is stronger than Nico just due to greater experience and stamina.) We don't need to be like Rick or ship stans who demean Percy to prop up Annabeth or other characters. They are both iconic and great friends despite whatever rivalry Rick was trying to project.
What makes Klayley different from other series ships for you?
I am assuming you mean other ships in the orignals by that.
It's the really simple case that's not simple at all. It's the underlying passion between them that just won't go away no matter who they take as a lover. The burning anger, loathing, care, loyalty, and the inexplicably undying connection that keeps them tethered to each other always and forever, come hell or highwater.
Mikael almost killed me and the baby, but i can't help but be more worried about how Klaus suffered all these years, I need to comfort him.
The witches are murdering me and the baby. Forget Elijah , I need Klaus here.
The witches stole baby hope? Not important right now, Hayley's dead, and I need a moment or several to take it all in.
I don't really love Jackson, but Klaus needs me to marry him, so I will.
I have to deal with my newly risen from dead mother and father, but whether Hayley's new husband is treating her right or not is more important.
Hayley tried to run from me, and I am extremely furious, but I can't bear to kill her or physically hurt her.
I will hate Klaus forever, but I can't really hate him at all.
My siblings are in trouble and may need my immediate help, but the road trip with Hayley is the best fun I have had in centuries, and I love it too much to stop now.
I am the strongest and the proudest being on earth. I kneel to no one, especially not to scum like Lucien, but he has Hayley, and I would never let her die. She means too much to me. I have to kneel to save her, no problem, I will do it a thousand times if it's to save her.
I love my Pack a lot, but the Mikaelsons are dying, Klaus is dying, so my pack can go to hell. I will save him and the Mikaelsons even if I die .
I have to let go of my dignity as a wolf and kill, lie, massacre all to save Klaus and Mikaelson family. And I used to have a problem with that, but it's for Klaus, I can't watch him suffer, so i will do it gladly.
Klaus is going around the world, massacring everything in sight and trying to cut contact, but I will never give up on him.
Being in New Orleans near hope will bring forth Apocalyspe that might kill hope, but Hayley's missing, so all else be damned.
I am being killed, and Klaus is being attacked by Elijah. He's hurt, Hope's hurt, so I am going to kill Greta and sacrifice myself for them because Klaus and Hope are my family Elijah be damned.
My daughter is dying and meets me in the afterlife, but the second I hear Klaus's voice, I know all will be alright.
My brother, my companion, my only confidant who I would go insane without is dead to me for good because he killed Hayley, and there's no greater offense than that.
I am in hell. My heart feels empty. Hayley is dead. I can sacrifice Elijah to save hope and kill the hollow, but I vowed to Hayley that I would do anything to save our daughter so I will sacrifice myself. [Also because I can't live without my little wolf]
So yeah, it's you know, soul shattering stuff like this that keeps me hooked to Klayley. Nothing huge. This and all the other essays I wrote should be plenty enough evidence as to why. (Sorry for the late)
And here's the thing anyone who watched the Orignals and isn't blind should be shipping them intensely, too.
one of my fav scenes in the entire riordanverse has to be the one in SoN in which percy makes a 50/50 life or death bet knowing he will win bc he knows gaia has to keep him alive. denying the plot armor allegations is OUT, weaponinzing it is IN
So we all agree that we are spending the day binging the Vengeance Saga in repeat, right?
headcanon!!
percy was looking for bianca for 14 hrs straight. everyone else gave up looking for here after around 3-ish hrs. they had to physically drag percy away from the wreck. when they finally did manage to get percy away from the wreck he passed out 30 seconds later. percys hands were also completely shredded and ripped. you could see the bones and muscles. there was blood all over them. he had bandages on his hands for at least three months afterwards. he does not remember any of this. he remembers looking for bianca longer than the others and he remembers his hands getting at least a bit injured. he does not know the extremes of either. his hand is covered in scars and stitches because of this.
zoe’s the one who stitched him up.
When do you think Klaus first realized he was in love with Hayley?
That's a tough question, really cause I think there were several moments through all seasons where you can tell that he was clearly and irrevicably in love with her but then they both go back to hostility so it's impossible to maintain consistency of it but only when we look at the words. The action, each and everyone is the greatest proof that he loved her since the first season.
He had initial attraction towards her when they had a one night stand. But they deepen their bonding, especially when he finds out she's like him, a cast away who learned to fight . And the intimacy blooms until Elijah Mikaelson yours truly, ruins everything and makes Klaus reserved and cold again but by the nothing true scene Klaus's feelings have definitely deepened to what we call love and it's most clearly visible after the witches kill Hayley and kidnap Hope but Klaus stays there holding Hayley's lifeless body with the most pained expression anyone can ever have instead of chasing after the witches. (So yeah he loves her for sure by then)
In season 2, we see his love less openly and frequently as the number of obstacles have multiplied in the form of previously Elijah, now Jackson. But it's visible when he threatens to deposit Jackson's head on a pike if he betrays Hayley, also when he has the most resigned and defeated look possible on his face during Jackson and Hayley's wedding and lastly when he curses her pack into wolf forms instead of slaughtering them even though in Klaus's eyes taking Hope away is like the highest of crimes simply because no matter how much he loathes the action, he can't bear to see Hayley dead.
Season 3 though? Klaus might as well be yelling I LOVE YOU HAYLEY every five minutes. Verbally humiliates him, physically hits him, Klaus's can't even hit back. Sees Hayley hug hope after so long and is literally oozing guilt, like hello since when does Klaus feel guilty for punishing someone. Apologizes to her, saying he was wrong, tell her he trusts her for the second time(HAS NEVER SAID IT EVEN ONCE TO ANY OTHER CHARACTER) , literally thanks her for not abandoning him even though he gave her a thousand reasons and now the chefs kiss KNEELS FOR HER, to save her , and we are talking about the most proud being in entire tvdu.
Counts on her to save his family and him and raise Hope and fully relinquishes his life, the lives of his siblings to her when they are all on the verge of death.
I could talk about this for ages but here's the gist, Klaus began to love her when she stood up against Mikael for him, his father who made Hayley hear every horrible profanity he could attach to Klaus and yet she looks him in the eye and says Mikael said nothing true with so much sincerety that Klaus is at a loss of words. And he spends the next episodes and season trying to stifle the feeling but by season 3 it was basically a public declaration. Sorry for not giving you one specific moment cause they all kind of contribute invaluably. (Thanks a ton for asking this question, one of the best ones)
I was reading your answer to ships that make you what to vomit and I'm genuinely curious as to why you said Percy and Annabeth's relationship is abusive? I've never heard anyone point out it was or even had the thought that it was abusive myself. I'd really appreciate if you could explain it to me because I'd really like to your opinions on the ship that everyone always seems to regard so highly (I hope this didnt sound rude, I'm just curious)
*frowns annoyed at tumblr* I have done an elaborate post on it before, but because tumblr is a little bitch, I can’t go looking for it on my own damn blog since the search-function doesn’t work. If you’re interested and the Tumblr Gods smile upon you, you could check out my “Riordan Critical” tag and seep through it for that post, it’s definitely there.
Due to tumblr being a little bitch, here’s the highlights of that post:
Annabeth continuously calls Percy a “seaweed brain” and other deteriorating nicknames. And no, insulting your significant other is not cute. Especially not for a boy who changed schools this often and has been bullied about, among other things, his intelligence. Absolutely no one can tell me that a boy who’s been bullied and called dumb by bullies for half his life would actually enjoy being insulted by his girlfriend.
In the beginning of The Titan’s Curse, when they’re on the school festitivity to pick up Nico and Bianca, Annabeth wants Percy to dance with her. Instead of asking him to dance, she is passive-agressively waiting for him to ask her. When he doesn’t… she punches him in the stomach. Not a friendly cuff in the shoulder, an actual punch and in one of the most vulnerable places. Using physical violence when your partner - and he wasn’t even her partner back then - doesn’t comply to your wishes, especially when you don’t even express those wishes vocally, is abuse. You can playfully swat your partner’s arm when he’s being silly, but punching someone in the stomach is not playful. And doing so because someone has not read your mind and anticipated your wishes is just straight-up gross.
When they are reunited in The Mark of Athena, her reaction is not to kiss him or embrace him, her reaction is to judo-flip him. And in as violent a manner that all Romans around them draw their weapons because their leader has just been physically assaulted. Now, like the assault itself wasn’t bad enough, she once again used physical violence to punish Percy for something. In this case, she is literally punishing him for getting abducted and suffering major trauma. It’s not like he willingly left her; he was abducted and has gone through a huge traumatic event in the past half year. Instead of being a comforting girlfriend concerned for him, she immediately punishes him physically for leaving her, like it was in any way or shape his fault.
People don’t notice because it’s the girl doing this and somehow, people at large have been so grossly brainwashed by straight romance to think that women physically abusing men is funny.
Now, please, imagine the roles being reverse, because then usually people see what’s actually wrong with that kind of behavior.
Imagine a girl not wanting to dance with a guy and he flat-out punches her in the gut. Seriously, that would not stand.
Imagine a girl having been abducted and traumatized and instead of embracing her and expressing his love, the guy judo-flips her and literally tags on verbally that this was because she left him and shouldn’t do that again.
Literally no one would have just read past such things. Everyone would have stumbled over those things. but since Annabeth is the cute blonde girlfriend and Percy is the strong male hero it’s ““funny”“ when she uses physical assault to punish him for not doing as she wants.
What makes matters worse is that she is literally a daughter of war, she is a genetically physically superior fighter. That’s how demigods work. And she has been training under Chiron for eight years. That’s the equivalent of a trained Navy SEAL assaulting you for upsetting them. That’s not some frail cute little cheerleader girly girl whose slap packs nothing.
And people just really don’t care or see what’s wrong with that.
EDIT: Thanks to @kimmycup for the link! Here’s the link to the OG post I made on this topic.
In which scenes do you think they should have given Klaus and Hayley a kissing scene?
Let's say we disregard the entirety of season 1, let the whole Elijah thing blow over.
Firstly, in season 2, when Klaus is consoling her after explaining the realities of being a hybrid, in the real moments are vibrant scene or even when he takes her out to kill witches, they could have given us a forehead touch in the for the former and a kiss for the latter part.[Both consumed by bloodlust mostly Hayley as Klaus can control it, she accidentally(definitely intentionally while acting on her true desires) kisses Klaus and he is so enamored he can't help but reciprocate.
I trust you, more than you know scene should have definitely evolved into a kiss. Klaus can't help the jealousy and the feeling of fear that arises at the thought of her marrying Jackson (yes, yes, he is also worried about Hope's existence being revealed, but there's obviously more) and after hearing Hayley's words he wants to convey to her that he does trust her and care for her so yeah a kiss there for sure.
In season 3, Hayley turns back and is fighting Klaus but breaks down after seeing Hope and then hugs her? I think that scene should have also had Klaus hugging them both, maybe to symbolise his apology or other but not a kiss, but at least a hug.
After he saves her from Lucien, we really need a scene where he hugs her, and then she kisses him because she needs to feel that he is real and they are both alright. Klaus kisses her back equally fervently to assure her that she is safe as she is both afraid for Klaus's life and her own so he can feel her fear and relief now that Lucien's dead. That should have definitely been added. (So many missed opportunities for the building up to probably the most compatible and perfect couple you would think they didn't do it just to not brutally destroy the previous Klaus or Hayley ships. Oh shit that's exactly why)
When they are alone in the wood clearing, and he says, "I have given you a thousand reasons to abandon me, but you haven't yet, thank you?" A kiss would have gone really well with that.
Maybe a scene where Hayley shows off her karaoke skills, and Klaus is so amazed he kisses her? That would have been perfect.
When he goes to Marcel to sacrifice himself for Hope, Hayley and his family, a parting kiss
When Klaus, Hayley and Hope unite and Klaus and Hayley see each other's struggles they can't help but kiss because Hayley has missed Klaus's presence, his words, his protection and Klaus has missed his little wolf and littlest wolf dearly, moreover Klaus can't help but marvel at her strength each time for whenever he thinks this might just break my little wolf she perseveres through it and he has been wanting to kiss her since they last parted and as she was one of the few who broke him out the want only doubled.
A lots of kisses during that time cause two people don't go to such lengths for each other if they don't love one another like crazy.
When he has to leave with the hollow's essence, a sorrowful but desperate kiss. Yet again, parting ways and this just might be permanent.
I like to think Hayley gave him individual visits to check on him when Hope was grown enough and was in school and they kissed and everything.
Lastly when Klaus saves her from Greta, the Hollow's defeated and its all good for the rest of them, after Hope's taken back, passionate kissing and make out scene that results into another miracle baby is exactly what we deserved. [This is what I believe would have actually happened if the writers weren't bloody fools and also so I don't wallow in misery at the unfairness of it all for both of them]
Ok, sorry if this is personal.
But how many people sent you hate for criticising and disliking Percabeth?
Also, how many of them sent you terrible reasons to defend Percabeth.
It's happened to me too. I'm so concerned for people like that.
Okay, bear with me on this. I might go on a tangent, and this might get long. ( Spoilers: It did get long.)
This fandom was one of the most close-minded fandoms ever and still is to some extent where liking anything outside of popular opinions or canon ships was, is taboo and shunned upon.
But things have gotten better in recent years or so, I think. Because I have been on tumblr officially for just 2 years, and I started posting like a year and a half ago. And you would be surprised to hear me say this, but I think Percy Jackson fandom is still somehow on the low end of the toxicity spectrum compared to the other fandoms I was and am in.
I got a tumblr account first through The Orignals and TVD fandom cause a YouTuber friend urged me to post about my takes on the Klayley ship over here. I mean, I was on here before that cause I was and am in many other book fandoms along with Spn fandom, but the point is I interacted more with tvdu and spn cause usually most other book fandoms at least for the ones I prefer are pretty chill.
Also, if you know anything about the TVDU universe, you would know that people are freaks for Klaroline, a ship I dislike with intensity, and it has a large backing and oh the sheer murderous intensity of those shippers.
Do I even need to say anything about Spn? I mean, tumblr runs on Supernatural fandom, so yeah, the toxicity can go to a whole new level, especially considering the actors are also dragged in it. But I digress, so yeah, Percy Jackson fandom isn't even close.
And since I was used to that and a more intense atmosphere, I found toxic Percabeth shippers extremely mild in comparison. So I might have less of an extreme attitude on their takes. Personally, I have never received a death threat ever in the pjo fandom, but I have been told that it used to be excessively common a good 2-3 years back by fellow mutuals.
So if you have had experiences with any of that, I am very sorry, and hopefully, you realize that some people and certain opinions are so repulsive and brainless that they do not deserve to be considered.
Another thing that's happened that's good is anti tags have become very handy for you know people who want to avoid seeing hate content on things they like. So most Percabeth shippers, the somewhat sensible ones, steer away from anti percabeth tags and given the butchering that Rick is doing to the already butchered ship in his new abomination of a trilogy, Percabeth shippers have learned to pick their battles. But yes, there are still the occasional hate comments, which some you delete, some you ignore because it's always something bullshit.
When I first began posting I was more on the extremely controversial side of the fandom but you know in the recent year the anti percabeth tag has grown, the fandom has finally started letting ships become more diverse and the arguments against the Canon ships have become more and more grounded.
-------------------------------------------------------
Now, to the important part, what is their usual defense?
1.
Well, firstly, no anti Percabeth shipper is really authentic unless they have had to fight the misogynistic allegations. "You hate the ship because you hate Annabeth. You are jealous of her and are a misogynistic person."
Yes, I do hate Annabeth. It's an opinion reached out of personal maturity. Yes I am a woman, and women can definitely be misogynistic, but do I hate Annabeth because of that? God no, I have much better reasons for hating Annabeth. Literally half my blog is highlighting how toxic and controlling she becomes.
I also hate her because she could have obviously been so much more. She has such good backstory, realistic motivations, and a very prevalent flaw to overcome, and the fact that her character just devolved with each book is such a painful thing to read. How no one on their side even addresses that the flaws exist is literally beyond me.
2.
The second most common reason I get is that Rick based Percabeth on his own marriage.
Listen, people, when someone says that they based something off of something, doesn't mean it's the same thing. Parodies are based off of the orignal but are nothing like the orignal.
Plus, the fact that Rick has terrible consistency throughout the books and forgets many plot points would tell you that he has no idea how to develop some of these things.
The idea isn't the one being criticized here. The evolution of that idea is. None of Annabeth's flaws were tackled for more than a single instance of the plot and forgotten immediately after.
Her controlling nature towards Percy, her blaming Percy for getting kidnapped and being brainwashed, her making him apologize for it; her trying to limit his powers, having a great misunderstanding regarding the Akhyls situation and just straight up ordering Percy not to use one of his key abilities even if to defend himself and we getting a follow up on that disastrous situation when Percy no longer defends himself and almost dies against Kympoleia and Polybotes.
3.
I recently got these ones a lot. Either they blame me for not tagging anti when I already have tagged anti and always tag anti first. I think two of these comments are still visible on my "How impressive you have to be to pull Percy post?"
The next one is me being biased, and all my reasons are not valid cause I am biased and hate Annabeth, so neither of my actual canon based evidence is true.
Pick a lane people. Either let us have our opinion or have the guts to argue rationally on this.
Another thing I do is that while I always tag anti, just in case, some Percabeth fan ends up on my post, there's always a section for Percabeth stans which contains my usual queries or concerns regarding whatever recent take I am elaborating and it always starts with my mild suggestion of being calm and rational and then thinking my points over. Usually, it acts as a buffer between hateful or frustration induced rants.
Either way, it's just the integral part of being in a fandom. Stuff like this happens, it's not good, but it happens.
The trick is to have a respectful conversation with those willing to listen and ignore the rest. It will lessen with time, and if you stick to the anti tag, it will help in reducing most of the unnecessary arguments.
I don't know if there's much I can do to help you, but I hope the post is at least somewhat helpful. I always appreciate feedbacks.
