It's Hard To Find A Good Place To Put Your Roos. 50/50 Chance For A Male, What Do You Do When You Don't

It's hard to find a good place to put your roos. 50/50 chance for a male, what do you do when you don't need half your flock

So! I went to visit the nice lady with the rooster sanctuary, it seems like a passion project for her and her family. She couldn’t remember exactly which boys were mine, so we looked all over her flock and I couldn’t see any of them! Most likely, unless some were hiding, they all got adopted! So, I still want some more boys in my flock, I took two New Sons home with me instead! They’ll be quarantined in the little coop behind my house for two weeks, but here they are!

So! I Went To Visit The Nice Lady With The Rooster Sanctuary, It Seems Like A Passion Project For Her

I was convinced this was one of mine until I looked more closely at his feet - I thought this was the Favaucana with 5 toes on one foot and four on the other. But, he’s got normal toesies. Still, while the lady was holding him while I looked at the rest of the flock, he started falling asleep in her arms, which was so sweet I decided to take him anyway! I love that beard, and I was hoping for a black rooster!

And this guy! Such a pretty boy, with big sweet eyes, and a gentle demeanor. In this photo, you can see the black roo has a split comb, I actually think it looks awesome and unique even though it’s technically a flaw.

So yeah! Fun stuff! I hope they both grow up to be gentlemen, and that they’ll get along with everyone!

The Exotic Animal Photo Reference Repository is live!

You can find it at: https://www.animal-photo-references.com!

A screenshot of the home page on the Exotic Animal Photo Reference Repository website. It is labeled "Photos by Taxa" in black text and has a copyright notice that reads: "Artists creating derivative or transformative works without Generative AI have blanket permission to reference these photos.

All other commercial and non-commercial use of these photos - including reposting them online or reproducing them in media or academic publications - requires advance permission. "

Below the text are six images in a 3x2 grid, each captioned. In the first row a photo of a cheetah is above the word "Mammals"; an American alligator is labeled "Reptiles"; a California Condor is labeled "Birds." The second row has a dart frog labeled "Coming soon: Amphibians"; an odd-looking fish sitting under a rock labeled "Coming soon: Fish"; and a small jellyfish labeled "Coming soon: Invertebrates."

Here's how this repository works: all photos were taken by me, a human, at zoos, aquariums, sanctuaries, and other facilities with animals in human care. There is no AI involved in the photo editing or creation and there never will be. Right now there's 56 species on the site; my catalog has over 300 and I will be uploading the rest of them as fast as I can.

Artists creating derivative or transformative works (without AI) have blanket permission to use these references. Yes, even for work you're going to sell.

All other usage/reproduction requires permission, but assume I'm friendly and please do ask! That's educators, researchers, the media, people who need images for a school presentation, etc. This is just to retain copyright/control in case they're scraped/reused unethically - it doesn't meant I don't want folk to have access! So please do reach out via the contact form on the repository website, I don't bite and I'm most likely going to say yes.

Please don't repost the repository photos to your own blogs: I've created @animalphotorefs as a dedicated blog to share photos from the site, and of course I'll reblog a lot of it here! That again just helps with retaining copyright and sourcing of the images. If you really want to repost some for a specific purpose, please just ask me first!

Also, folks, this project has no funding. It's just me and my camera.

There will never be a paywall on the site - I believe resources like this absolutely must be free for everyone to access. So please, please, please support the repository if you use it. Want sneak peeks at photos, cute videos I take, or to help choose what I photograph and what gets posted first? You can do that through Patreon (and there's a free trial on the most interactive tier!) If you'd like to just drop a tip, I've also set up a Ko-Fi.

I can't wait to hear what everyone thinks of the repository.

To whet your thirst for cute photos, here's an Indian rhinoceros contemplating a goose.

An Indian Rhinoceros' head is visible above the surface of deep water. It is staring directly at a Canadian goose that stands on concrete at the edge of the pool.

Once you start thinking about humans as a species in a biome, it affects your entire way of looking at normal things.

The other day I referred to female morning joggers as an 'indicator species' in that if you see women jogging in the dark it means that the environment provides migration pathways (sidewalks, clear signs) and doesn't have any known predators of female morning joggers (guy with knife, bear, BigTruck, male morning joggers).

Though, I think that people consider framing humans as animals reacting to their environment as rude.

Thinking about how wild it is that enshittification starts as a way for the rich to squeeze the populace for more money but ends up infecting everything so even luxury products decline in quality. They’ve got more money than fucking God now and for what? Literally they can’t even buy fun nice stuff for themselves because they killed craft.

Anyway this post is about Dhaka muslin but it’s also about everything.

The thing about woodpeckers tongue wrapping around their head is that it helps them when they bang their head against the tree a thousand times. If I remember correctly it works as a cushion to protect from brain injury. I would like a concussion proof skull please

MorrowSeer And His Wife Secretkeeper. I Have An AU Idea I'm Working On Where This Couple Both Have The

MorrowSeer and his wife Secretkeeper. I have an AU idea I'm working on where this couple both have the idea to hide their egg in the rainforest, at the persuasion of Mastermind of course

Explanation below the cut

MasterMind found a fragment of an old book referenceing the connection between the moon and the Nightwing powers. He did not dismiss this literature as a work of fiction because it was authored by a well known scientist of old about the possible connection between nutrition of the mother while laying the egg and the speed of the produced hatchling's development.

The article addressed both the physical and psychic development of the hatchling, acknowledging the small sample size of MoonBorn dragonets as a potential error in their research.

MoonBorn was a common term in the legends of powered Nightwings. Most assumed MoonBorn to be a name, perhaps the name of a powerful seer who predicted other seers hatching. But if it was instead a condition of hatching, could the powers of old be real?

Fewer and fewer Nightwings were being hatched each year. The selection of possible 'test subjects' was few, and the conditions on the island were all wrong.

The punishment for being caught were severe, BattleWinner did not view treason lightly. But the benefits... If his research was correct... He could be responsible for the hatching of the first seer in centuries.

He needed an egg, preferably willing parents, and an opportunity granted only to those most loyal to the queen.

A double moonlit sky was approaching, he had less than a year.

------------------

I'm still working on this concept. I want to explore a world where Secretkeeper and MorrowSeer have similar goals and ideas. Where Moon's abilities are a goal her parents tried to achieve. And where she is trained by both her mother and father.

I might retcon this later though. Perhaps MasterMind thought the moons would make the dragonet an Animus instead, and the mind reading and seer powers were an unexpected result. Perhaps the queen finds out about this plan before it's fully carried out. Perhaps the RainWings find the egg and take it with them to their hatchery. Who knows. I plan to make this a comic as a sort of art practice. Any and all feedback is appreciated.

You draw legs very well

An illustration of a oc dragon from the Wings of Fire series - a nightwing-sandwing hybrid named Daybreak. He is sitting on his hind legs with fully uncurled wings, the left side of his body shown to the viewer. He looks amused, forked tongue sticking out of his closed mouth. Daybreak is holding a pile of scrolls and papers in his front limb, some falling out of his hands, small amount of them already on the ground. A belt with two middle-sized bags is placed on the left side of his body. His scales are mostly purple-gray in color, his belly and neck scales are lighter than the rest of his body. His muzzle, front paws, left leg and a part of his tail are light cream in color, some freckles of the same hue are strewn around his body. His wing membranes are mostly dark purple with cream specks, they fade slightly into gold at the edges. He's wearing a pale gold chest plate with a sun-like symbol on it. The background is transparent, the character is outlined in white with some hand drawn stars around him.
An illustration of a oc dragon character from the Wings of fire series - a skywing named Thunder. He's sitting on his hind legs, wings partially open with the most of his right side is shown to the viewer. He's holding a small cup of popcorn, with his left paw holding a small piece. He's staring at the viewer with a judgmental expression. His scales are mostly yellow-gold, with his underbelly being orange and a thin, red stripe running down his back and tail. His limbs are decorated with a tabby-like pattern. The outside of his wings is orange while the inner membrane is pale yellow with white, lighting-shaped markings stretching across the whole surface. His horns as well as the back and tail spikes are shaped slightly like lighting bolts. the background is transparent, the character is outlined in white.
An illustration of two headshots of a oc dragons from the Wings of fire series - a nightwing/sandwing named Daybreak and a sandwing named Sunstone. Both of them are drawn from the neck up, horizontally, with their mouths open, using firebreath. The dragon at the top, Daybreak, is mostly purple-gray with some lighter scales on his throat. The scales on his back are circular and have lighter, more purple accents. He has long, bat-like ears. His snout has a pale cream patch. His head horn are straight and almost black, with smaller spikes of the same color running down his back. At the end of his neck there's a cut-off chest piece of a pale golden color. The fire coming out of Daybreak's mouth is reddish with some lighter strokes of cream and pink mixed within. the dragon below, Sunstone, is mostly golden with dirty-orange scales under his throat and eyes. His sandwing fin is ragged and orange-pink in color. He's wearing a lot of golden jewelry, two necklaces, a chestpiece identical to the one Daybreak is wearing, a small tiara, horn rings, and earings connected to a brindle on his muzzle. His head horns are dark red in color. The fire coming out of his mouth is has a longer reach than Daybreak's, it's much lighter in color, ranging from pale cream to orange-red. The background is dark-blue, both of the characters are outlined in white.
An illustration of a oc dragon from the Wings of Fire series - an icewing named Verglas. He's laying down, with his front limbs crossed and his tailed curled behind him. His wings are almost fully closed. His scales are fully purple-black, dappled with opalescent sheen. His underbelly and a part of his under tail area has long, dark fur growing out of it. His head horns, and neck and tail spikes are also a darker tone than the rest of his body. His nose and insides of his ears are dark blue. Two tusks are sticking out of his mouth. His front leg's ankles are wrapped in a leather bandage. The background is transparent, the character is outlined in white.

Wof oc doodles!
