kieran duffy………….. ok hold my hand here. you got this relatively young guy. as in his voice actor was like 19 years old when they started production on rdr2 and i dont know when they actually started filming his voice lines between then and the games release. but like thats why he sounds so young. except he doesnt look young at all. hes got eyebags and wrinkles and little gray hairs. and its like yeah of course he’d look like that. hes been fighting for his life since his parents died. hes seen battles. he’s killed and nearly been killed since his job cut him loose. we dont KNOW how long ago his parents died either. all we know is he never got his fathers accent and that they died when he was really young BUT they lived long enough to teach kieran how to ride horses and how to fish. and clearly kieran still remembers them fondly.
and this guy. this fffuucking guy. right. he stutters when he asks for things and hes clearly nervous about his place in the gang and in the world because all he Wants is to belong. but that anxiety doesnt make him submissive to abuse. he’ll gladly yell at arthur to stop antagonizing him, and if its just arthurs light hearted threats hes fine matching that energy and just telling him to shut up. kieran stands up to people, points out their flaws. he did it with john, he did it with arthur, hes done it with COLM. he doesnt take anyones shit! hes confident! maybe too confident! in who he is, in what he believes, in what hes good at…. only thing hes really not confident in is how OTHERS view him. all that confidence means nothing to him unless hes proven to dutch and arthur that hes as valuable as he thinks he is personally. he needs to KNOW that hes found a place he fits in.
hes not asking arthur to call him “kieran van der linde”. hes not asking to replace who he is for the sake of affiliation with the gang. he says it himself, hes kieran duffy. and that doesnt seem to be a thing he Wants to change. he wants to be kieran duffy, but where in a world of o’driscolls and van der lindes and soldiers and stableboys does kieran duffy belong, yknow?
