Okay wait so something just struck me
Can you imagine, like in Mob Psycho 100, Reigenās safety just becomes like. A top level priority for the government.
Like Reigen is, or is at least partially, the reason all these Uber powerful psychics are living normal ass lives. Maybe even if itās just tangentially. Either way, Mob would absolutely lose it if Reigen got hurt. And god forbid if something worse weāre to happen to him, those responsible would have to deal with several extremely powerful extremely pissed off psychics. They might not even care about Reigen specifically. But Reigen being hurt hurts Mob. And you canāt hurt Mob. Hurting mob is a crime against humanity
So like. What if at one point Joseph From The Government just sees this guy who has Zero Percent Psychic Power and One Hundred Percent Direct Relation To Powerful Psychics just throwing his ass into danger for Something and Mob/Teruki/Serizawa/(insert other psychics because Iām forgetting people) just losing all their braincells going after him and heās like oh my god. Someone put this man in a tucking hamster ball he cannot be allowed to be hurt for any reason ever Japan would not survive this
one thing i feel like (disappointingly) wasn't elaborated on enough in mp100 is reigen's own loneliness.
sure, we got that whole episode with the separation arc, but that never really resolves reigen's loneliness. that doesn't change the fact that even down to the end, he has only one adult friend and the rest of them are a gaggle of teenagers that like to hang out around him. and sure, that's not inherently a bad thing necessarily, it's probably the most friends he's had his entire life and that's why he cries when they get him a birthday cake.
but i feel like he's the kind of guy who does actually want adult friends to talk about adult things with. someone at the same stages of life that he's at, or even older.
reigen is so used to helping other people and giving other people advice that i feel like HE needs someone to be there for him, to give HIM advice. someone to scratch HIS back for once.
but another thing is that i feel like part of him thinks he doesn't deserve it, because of all the lying he does.
there is not a doubt in my mind that reigen has so much guilt stockpiled inside himself about all the lying, and (in my own personal headcannon) part of the reason he can so easily jump into danger at times is because he quietly hopes that maybe if he punishes himself enough with enough injury, or even with death, that'll somehow make up for it.
obviously that's not how it works, and reigen is a good person because regardless of the lying, he is still on some level helping people with their very normal problems by giving them very normal solutions, and is just attributing everything to spirits and exorcisms. not to mention everything he has done for mob (despite initially using him for his buisiness). he's a lot more of a grey person than he thinks he is.
i think he really needs some good adult friends, but he just can't really get ahold of any because deep down, as much as he gets on mob for being socially awkward, i think he's just as socially awkward, deep down.
i mean, the guy had to google how to ask someone out to help mob figure out how to talk to tsubomi. i don't think he's as great with people in a social context as he thinks he is. in a business context, sure, he knows exactly what to say because he has all the scripts and all the excuses in the world, but in a personal, social context, i think he can be quite clueless.
he doesn't really know how to talk to people or where to find friends as an adult, so his only friends are any coworkers he potentially has, and half the time he didn't even want to be friends with his coworkers (hence no mention of friends in his previous office job). it's different at spirits and such though, because he has mob, and later, serizawa.
i think for a long time, he considers mob "enough" of a friend, even though he still understands his role as the adult in the relationship and thus can't *actually* discuss adult things with him or treat him like an adult friend, as it would probably be inappropriate. he considers mob a friend even though he's more his student, because mob is one of the only people he sees on a regular basis until serizawa starts working there, and that's when things get a little different.
he realizes that he doesn't have to treat serizawa the same way that he treats mob, because serizawa is an adult, even if he's an extremely, openly awkward one who doesn't know how to socialize very well. but that's okay, because reigen can work with that, he's also very awkward deep down, even if he won't admit it. not to mention that mob, reigen's other friend, is also socially awkward, and reigen successfully navigates conversations with him all the time.
i think once reigen realizes that he doesn't have to hold back as much as he normally does around mob, he finally understands that his best friends can't all just be a million still developing teenagers who aren't on his level with life, and it gives him a kind of emotional release to finally have an adult friend.
serizawa also feels the same way, having only had exactly one friend in the past like fifteen years, and it was his previous boss, who was evil, and told him to attack and kill people. now he has a boss that is his friend, and has him helping people, and frankly i think it gives him much more peace of mind.
anyway i think they're besties.
Mob Psycho 100 is so good... I love it with my whole being. So here is a random audio that I thought was funny and fitted the characters, and then spend way too much time animating. It was fun though.
Audio is from Gayle, episode 15

For the last time. A bear is a FAT hairy man. FAT. FAT. Say it with me because it's not a bad word. Bears are fat men. Stop showing me dehydrated and muscular hairy white men. That is not a bear. That is some generic white guy I don't want to look at. Give me real bears or give me death.
Me, an author, side eyeing my WIP: you're not going to do anything weird, are you? We've discussed this. There's a plan. We're going to stick to the plan, aren't we?
The WIP: *presents subplot, presents additional conflicts, presents character development, laughs in my fucking face*
i just KNOW reigen wasnt getting hated on on tmoblr. no. no way this man was being shat on by tumblrinas. they were calculating the circumfrence of his ass and writing RPF about him and the other psychic guy in the tv show. there was discourse over wether it was ethical to stan him and people has "reigen supporter" in their DNIs. i just know the discourse was crazy man
now that aromantic awareness week is over itās time for aromantic unawareness week BRING OUT REIGEN ARATAKA
REAL
youāre in her DMs but she has incorporated some of my headcanons into hers and now she forgets theyāre not even part of the source material. we are not the same
One of my favorite minor details about Reigen in Mob Psycho is how he always protects his head when it is about to hit something
Where did you get that reaction from you funky little man
reblog this to show you did your civic duty
I feel like a great example of The Duality Of Reigen is how he manages to take out an entire squad of Claw goons with charisma and Sakurai's cursed cologne, but the manga reveals that the reason he knows how the cologne works is that one day he got bored, sprayed it directly into his own face, and lost a client when they arrived for their appointment to find him passed the fuck out on the office floor.
I have caved. here is my pitch for why Shigeo "Mob" Kageyama needs to win the @autismswagsummit (or at the very least get to the finals)
people have already talked about his intense autism coding (difficulty reading social cues, low empathy/high compassion, strict moral code, flat affect, bluntness, hyperfixating, emotional dysregulation/emotions being all or nothing) but I'm going to put my English degree to good use and talk about the narrative importance of Mob's autism
first and foremost, the 100 in Mob Psycho 100? it's a symbol of Mob's emotional dysregulation. the narrative uses a percentage counter as a device to indicate Mob's emotional state -- the percentage till Mob's "explosion." emotions and psychic powers are directly related within the narrative, and because he fears the strength of his emotions/powers, he's been repressing his emotions since he was a child. however, as anyone who tries to repress their emotions can tell you, that only works for so long. the percentage meter indicates the build up of emotions until he cannot repress them anymore -- until he essentially has an emotional meltdown through a psychic explosion. these explosions aren't strictly negative emotions either; they can range a wide spectrum of emotions, from rage and sadness to gratitude and trust. any buildup of emotions can be overwhelming and trigger a meltdown
aside from that, the core thesis of the series is self-acceptance. Mob starts off the series with painfully low self-esteem, for a number of reasons -- he dislikes that he doesn't fit in, he feels massive guilt for allowing his psychic powers to hurt his brother when they were little. he wishes he didn't have these powers (which, I cannot emphasize enough, are a metaphor for autism) and he wishes he could just be "normal." over the course of the series, it is emphasized over and over that psychic powers are normal, they're just another trait a person can have. there's good parts of them and bad parts, but at the end of the day, they are a neutral trait. you can understand why "your autism is a normal part of you, not something to be hated or feared" is an important message
which brings us to the final arc of the series. Mob Psycho 100 does not end with a climactic battle with some big bad, but rather with a confrontation between Mob and the part of himself he's locked away. this other part of him symbolizes a lot of things, but most importantly it symbolizes his psychic powers and his autism. since he realized as a child that his psychic powers (autism) could potentially hurt someone if he's not careful, he's been shoving that part away from him and attempting to mask and be "normal." this manifestation of his psychic powers/autism is, understandably, pretty bitter and angry about this. at the end of the day, he just wants to be accepted for who he is -- not for the face he presents to the world, but for who he really is on the inside. the culmination of the whole story comes through his loved ones showing him that they love him in his entirety, even when he's volatile or upset. they love Mob as who he is, and because his psychic powers (autism) are part of him, they love that part of him too. the resolution comes when Mob finally accepts all parts of himself, even his psychic powers (autism) because they're nothing to be feared or hated. they're just part of him.
genuinely, Mob Psycho 100 is the best representation of autism I've ever seen. Mob isn't the only autistic coded character in the series (I could go on and on about Serizawa's adult autism or the relationship between Ritsu's gifted kid syndrome and his undiagnosed autism) but his autism is definitely the most important to the plot of the show. his autism is presented realistically, with kindness and nuance and, most importantly, with neutrality. even if you don't vote Mob in the autism summit (which, you should. come on.) if you're ever wanting a show about autism and self acceptance that is kind without being saccharine, I cannot recommend Mob Psycho 100 enough
also if this isn't a damning indication of the importance of autism in Mob Psycho 100, I don't know what is

MOB WON šŖšŖšŖ
THIS IS SO GOD DAMN REAL I GOTTA DRAW IT
i dont think mob will ever get taller than reigen bc he is a short king in my heart but i think ritsu would and he would get so excited about it like popping champagne bottles and crying and patting himself on the back and heād go into spirits and such just to stick it to him and reigen would just not care at all. like heād be like āwow haha hey mobās brother itās rare for you to drop byā and ritsu totally thinks heās owning him by being 5ā²11 but reigenās just like āshit what was this kids name again?????ā
some things aren't even headcanons they're just divine visions and u have no choice but to accept them
they areā¦. so important to me

See the difference between Twitter sexyman and tumblr sexyman is reigan and sans fucked on a grave after but reigan and cecil caught up at a bar to talk about life and maybe hype up their husbands
every once in a while iāll be going about my day and suddenly remember just how much mob and serizawa are foils of each other, down to the wording of the promise they received from the person they look up to, and lose my mind all over again
He's literally me
ritsu is so funny to me. he says shit like "I'm a completely normal middle schooler, I'm the utmost case of plain and simple" which is clearly something normal people say. he keeps a spoon in his pencil cup. and in his pocket. he got up in the middle of the night and did weird poses around the sink to try to make water float. he's a rude and judgy bitch but only in his head. when asked if he has friends, he responded with "I talk about the weather with pretty much anyone, so don't worry about me." he canonically doesn't listen to music. his brother thinks of him as his calm and collected little brother who always knows what to do, when in reality he's the most neurotic kid on the planet. he saw teru wearing a giant wig and thought "wow his brain must be so big." when he and shou first met, they beat the shit out of each other until he was knocked unconscious, and then when they met the second time, it was when shou came to his house unannounced and was like "hey do you want to help me kill my dad" and ritsu was like "okay. btw I think we have similar family trauma." he tried to zap a bug with psychic powers and then screamed for his brother's help when he couldn't get it. he used to cry as a child about spoons. his first instinct when seeing a spirit for the first time was to slam it repeatedly into his knee. he is the thirteen year old of all time.
