They were so beautiful together. Such a true connection there was between themš
Tell me weāre not crazy, you and I. Crazy? To put ourselves through all this when the outcomeās so uncertain. The outcome is only uncertain for those who disbelieve. I believe in this place, and I believe if thereās anyone who can do whatās necessary to make it something better, itās you.
Rio and Agatha - Star Crossed Lovers
She's absolutely a great character. I've always loved her and her relationship with Lestat (yeah, all of it to the end). I'm really curious to see what they are going to do with her in the show.
She is 'The Wild' and I can't wait to see how they'll make that real on screen.
Gabrielle De Lioncourt is such a cool character I cannot wait to see them on the tv show preferably played by a non-binary person maybe? There's no character like them, like being forced into the performance of womanhood and motherhood out of the constraints of the time period. Being so apathetic to her children and husband because it's almost like they belong to someone else. She's one of the only characters who was given a choice about her turning and she's the one who takes to vampirism the best, immediately viewing it as an opportunity to disregard all the shackles of societal expectations, directly opposite to someone like Louis who tries desperately to hold on to whats left of his human life. And the pure agony of her hair growing back every time she cuts it that scene felt so tragic, the betrayal of her true self by her own body.
Iāve been working my way through what Iām calling Captain Flintās reading list - or the key books he either owned or were key to the plot of the show.Ā To keep things fresh I have been reading more than one book at a time.
A few books were hard to find as e-books or based on the original formatting that has been maintained for the copies, I chose to purchase the hard copy.
After getting my Covid booster shot, I popped into a bookstore and got a hard copy of Meditations.Ā Iād been getting tired of the free ebook with rather over the top language.Ā This copy is hailed as the first translation in a generation from 2003 by Gregory Hays.Ā Iāve been taking my time with it and find this translation to be more direct in its intentions.Ā It still keeps the true feelings of the text, but it does shy away from the more dramatic:
- You should be like a rocky promontory, against which the restless surf continuously pounds.Ā It stands fast while the churning sea is lulled to sleep at its feet.
which is what Miranda reads to Richard Guthrie as her favorite selection.
The Hays translation instead goes with:
- To be like the rock that the waves keep crashing over.Ā It stands unmoved and the raging of the sea falls still around it.
The ebook version has this variation from a translation by Casaubon, which is edited by someone who isnāt credited in the document.Ā It is clear though that Casaubon took liberties with the translation - including paraphrasing things for the current reader of 1634 or 1635:

Lately I went rewatching ep.I. It was the third time, but the first one being as obsessed with this show (and having the full picture of it) as I am now. And, wow, it really could be called an āintroductionā. I mean, besides all the main characters' introduction, in those 60 minutes there are hints to all of the main themes treated in the show.
They give a sketch of the pirate figure they are going to deepen throughout the seasons (free men who keep what they want) and also of the way they are seen and conceived by the civilized world (as fearsome monsters).
They also start to give some hints about the nature of that ācivilized worldā.
They even introduce the concept of shame! I didn't remember that.
Captain Hume says: āgossip is what holds civilization together. It reinforces shame. And without shame the world is a very dangerous place.ā
Which, wow, is pretty ominous considering what we are going to discover in season two.
They also start to make it pretty clear how things work in Nassau, how important it is to have allies and at the same time how easily those alliances may change, with poor Gates trying to gain votes for Flint (and I'm going to say it once again: he didn't deserve to die. Like, I love Flint, but this I can't forgive him.)
And speaking about Flint, they already give very important informations about him.
Sure, we see him being the bossiest and the strongest of the bunch, all determined with his actions and plans and all, but what I'm really talking about are the hints to his personality.
Of course we don't know him yet at episode one (and I'm sure the first impressions of him must have been the most disparate. I can't even remember my very first impression of him, but considering my actual tastes in characters I think that if I had first known him now I would have loved him at once) but they drop things which are very important considering what we are going to discover about his character.
Like, we know at first that he doesn't trust his men at all (āI don't trust them with the truthā+ the various lies lol), and we see that he definitely is not āone of themā, because they find him too different from them to be considered such and probably this is where all those mistrust in him come from (āI know they've always found me aloof, too educatedā which really, really, tells a lot about him).
And I just thought: how strong must he have been to gain and hold the power over those men in a world where there are no rules, no indisputable ranks, where trust and submission is granted (and only barely promised) to the stronger ones or to the ones who are considered the most fitted to receive it only basing on one's subjective judgment and advantage, without even being liked by those men?
And also, Dufresne says that āhe loves his booksā which is another one of the things that in my opinion are so beautiful about his character for the deep links those books have with his story and his development (I could write a whole essay about Flint's books lol).
Anyway, I just finished rewatching season 4 some weeks ago and since I can't stay for long without BS anymore I thought: why not starting it again? And so. Btw, I really needed to rewatch the first season since I feel like I still haven't appreciated it enough.
thinking about flint's awkwardness around people, one of my favourite acting choices made by toby stephens (who truly never misses) is in the scene where thomas goes to kiss flint. he cups his face, holds his gaze and flint looks at him trapped. but when he comes closer flint just. flinches. his face jerks slightly back as if to avoid a blow. his are eyes pained like he's already been hit. it's such a panicked little twitch, instinctive and quickly tamed, that i hesitate to put it to rational considerations about the consequences of kissing a man. i always felt it was a moment of profound shyness and unease in the face of tenderness. again, i find it really endearing and i am forever surprised they went for this complex mix of sweetness, vulnerability and strength and competence in a male protagonist of a show covering the role of a warrior leader.
That's what's so special about him!
That he is not the kind of character (for his role, in fact) one would expect to have this deep, actually introvert kind of personality. And it clashes so much with his 'shouting order-self' we get to see while he is on action, but I think that EXACTLY because he has actually that kind of personality there wouldn't have probably been any other ways than that for him to relate with people around him.
Also, it's such a great depiction of how in the end everyone has to morph their own selves -even painfully- in the shape more fitted to survive in the enviroment they have to be. Which is sad but it's exactly how his character came to be and it's what makes him special because it makes him not only a vengeful warrior but also a broken neurodivergent human who has to face a world that has not enough space for people like him.
A dragon in the darkness, indeed.

What does it means to be loved by Death?
No pain
(Anne Rice)
Sorry, this quote just lives rent free in my mind since I first read it and it's just perfect for Agatha, Nicky and Rioš¢
