Happy bday bloodbourne I wish I was playing you instead of being sick blehgh bleh

Got my brother to watch FMAB and then made a shitpost for him because this is the burden anyone who watches anything with me must bear
as soon as i saw Hollow Knight in your bio i was so wishing my brother had a tumblr. he has been talking about Silk Song for so long, he loves Hollow Knight, he draws the characters, and i think he has plushies. they definitely live in his head rent free, too!! thanks for making me smile!!
Aww. Your brother has good taste, it's such a fun game and the art style means the characters are also a lot of fun to draw so I relate to his pasttime- and I've got a few HK plushies myself, I almost wonder if we've got some of the same ones. We've got to collect something while waiting for the elusive Silksong lol.
It was really neat to hear from one of my favorite fanfic authors, and I just saw the news yesterday about Cataclysm while rereading one on ao3. I'm hoping to get the chance for a free day to sit down and read the novel soon, but wanted to say right now congratulations on the recent publication!!
oh boy I get to feel embarrassed about being incredibly transparent, not the mortifying ordeal of repeat themes being seen
uhhhh
Dialogue or introspection and nothing else- self explanatory XD I have a dialogue problem. Things are emotion driven, or thought driven, and then action is driven by interactions, and the rest is a walking simulator in nondescript anywhere-land. The only thing that could be added are action scenes, because I go from never describing anything environmental or tactile to taking pages on a fight like it’s a DBZ saga
Anger issues- I have a tendency to give my main protagonists anger problems that steer their plot or come up often in introspection, ho boy. Often if they have a foil antagonist, they’d be guilty of this too. I’ve got too many povs that are just angry hurt people with bad coping skills. There’ll be plots based out of the consequences of actions, but there’s also just the aspect of having some empathy for them; you don’t have to forgive them, but you can see where they’re coming from and see that they’re people too. (I also just have an easier time writing what I am familiar with, and I’m familiar with rejection, bitterness, lashing out, and other unpleasantries as an angry person myself lol)
Fall from grace/dethroned power figures/gods/etc- happens to protagonists and antagonists in my sandbox often and I'm sure they hate it
intense (homo)erotic enemies/rivals dynamics- listen…there’s no excuse Half of the time I don’t even intend to set out for this to happen but it does anyway. I blame being a Transformers fan. So many hate boners and murder soulmates and homoerotic enemies ahoy therein. Will they kill each other from being stuck in a box together too long? Will they decide to see their familiarities and improve as people together? Will they make out? Who knows
Weird sadomasochistic vibes going on in the POV (especially in fight scenes)- this comes up whenever the above theme comes up and I have no escape. Fight scenes and memories of all the reasons you hate a dude aren’t supposed to sound so horny, and yet. And yet. You know what, I'll blame transformers for this one too.
mercy/cruel mercy- I have this habit of preferring characters to live, because character death means I can’t play with them anymore outside of the instances where it serves to impact another character/the setting in important ways. Since I was a kid, I’ve liked seeing themes of what ramifications would/do come from a character being spared, and its twist side of cruel mercy, whether because it’s the best option out of all bad options (stares at you, Wakfu season 2 and what horrors you did to my little child brain) or it’s a protag/antag deciding sparing an antag/protag is the worse fate and they’re feeling vindictive.
Nonhuman characters and inhuman povs- I feel like most of the fandoms I’ve ever been in have few to no humans, and either that influences how I want to see more aliens/constructs/monsters in og works or I gravitate to those fandoms first, but either way, chances are high there will be aliens, monsters, androids, artificial constructs, fantasy races, or eldritch creatures playing large roles in anything I make. I really love playing around with povs from these types of characters and just trying to keep inhuman povs inhuman but also explore how that would look. I’m not sure I’m really able to explain it but let’s just say I’m the type of writer to look at a one-off character like Armus in Star Trek TNG and then spend over a year of notetaking going ‘but what would that existence be like’. Happy to report that someone told me I managed to make a comprehensible but very non-human alien narrator (in a Godzilla fic lmao).
Becoming more than what you were built for- tied to my above use of constructs or nonhuman forces, because a lot of times their stories involve having been created to be a tool/weapon for a single purpose and then, after either rebelling against that or having the environment remove that purpose, the slow journey to figuring out who they are, what they believe, and how they’re more valuable than they’d originally be able to think. Also goes for 'human' characters becoming their own person outside of whatever destiny they've been told they're supposed to have.
Found family- I just Like It. Happens in almost any of my fics and (eventually) happens in my og stuff too (or if not, it happened and then broke apart and the theme is instead how the hurt of betrayal/broken found family is just as valid as its counterpart tropes)
IMMORTALITY AS A HORROR CONCEPT- haha my beloved, thank you again wakfu for cursing me with the horrors
I'll tag @inthegloomglow @void-rainbow @ganondorf--apologist @loveandscience @darksidekelz if any of you wanna play too

Rules: look back on your works, both past and present, finished and unfinished. What are five to ten narrative elements or tropes that continuously pop up in your work? Give a list of these things!
OMG this one his hard, but I'll try.
Self-worth issues: most of my characters have to realize their own worth throughout the story
Love doesn't fix your problems but it gives you the strength to fix them yourself - that's it, that's what my stories are about and always will be
Supportive characters - I don't like my heroes to exist in a vacuum, they are always surrounded by people that support them and that they care about
Lovers coming from different backgrounds - I have yet to find true enemies to lovers but my MCs always come from the opposite end of a scale
Dreams and nightmares - meaningful (prophetic?) dreams or nightmares occur in all my works. I don't have a rational reason for that, maybe it's my own messy relationship with sleep 😄

Uhhhh
When I Wake From This Dream With Chains All Around Me (Hollow Knight) where my HK writing got kicked off. Longfic.
It’s Burned In My Mind and all of its associated works (Hollow Knight) absolute fever dream, wrote in a splurge of dissociation, wild time and probably my favorite fic I’ve written. Multichap.
The If We Could Just Be What We Wanted verse (Transformers Prime with a dose of a bunch of other continuities) particularly the first one (which needs edits but in terms of tone and characters and me managing plots genuinely holds up really well to the last few years), Damned If I Do (oneshot), and poor Chaotic Unity (longfic), who I had so many seeds of foreshadowing put into the first fic for and then it got read by like five percent of the original’s readers XD
control’s graveyard (Monsterverse Godzilla. Yep.) entirely self indulgent fun times, power dynamics central, character studies on everyone, I poured into worldbuilding and backstories and I think I managed to do show don’t tell with them better here than I manage elsewhere. Someone said that I managed to keep the main character “alien and genuinely despicable” while somehow keeping them sympathetic, and that praise is put on my mental fridge forever. I reread this fic more than I do any of my other ones. Genuinely my favoritism for it is showing hard. Multichap.
Immolation (MTMTE/Lost Light) Haven’t read this one in a year so grammar wise I’m sure it’s a wreck, but my 3am brain went off on this one and its stream of consciousness style. Oneshot.
Wyrm Off A String (Hollow Knight) based on crack and others’ art, ridiculous premise, somehow the best worldbuilding and foreshadowing of a twist ending I’ve done. Oneshot.
Linger (Hollow Knight) mad niche, another one that began because of crack and shitposts I saw. Loss of self, body horror, psychological horror, non linear dream madness, what’s not for me to love. Multichap in progress
Wallow (Hollow Knight) another incredibly niche one nobody asked for, that is actually going to be turned into a multichap and has a lot of juicy to a self indulgent author tension and shenanigans already written, but I’m waiting until I’ve written most all of it before I start posting the new chapters. Dubbed by my friends as the Mean White Lady Fic. Traitor Lord my beloved. (Oneshot on ao3, multichap to be)
sometimes family is a mad scientist spider, his amoral ex, their build-a-child kit gone right, and the human sidekick (IDW2005 Transformers) oneshots collection. Quite proud of the Verity and Prowl povs. Tarantulas my blorbo.
ex cinere (House of Ashes) for capturing the voice and worldbuilding after I relistened to Randolph’s things a million times. I feel like I managed to keep aliens alien for it (short multichap)
And CarnEVILs? In MY Dirtmouth? (It’s More Likely Than You Think!) (Hollow Knight) halloween oneshot with an Elderbug pov that feels very Elderbug and Dirtmouth vibes as good here as in Chains. Elderbug did not enjoy his obligatory grimm teatime™️.
Hey look this is not five. 108 fics too difficult to narrow down for me

The Hollow Knight, Bretta, Nightmare King Grimm
One of these is solely because I want to see you admit your favorite ship on main, I cannot stop myself
I think I need to not attempt ask games because I am too talkative and make long ass posts help
The Hollow Knight: What was the saddest part of the game for you? Which ending is the most sad to you?
All of it
But seriously, so many moments. I’ll throw the Nosk Den out as one, alongside the Abyss. A lot of the settings give feels, like the empty basin. The White Palace’s everything always makes me feel Emotions. A lot of the ghosts make me sad. MARMU. Agh.
Which ending isn’t sad? That said, I am going to go with Sealed Siblings as the worst feeling ending. It feels like the one that has the most damage caused and the least hope. Dream No More is a ‘good’ ending, though, but it gives many sad feelings (just of a different nature than the long scream of SS/THK ending)
Bretta: Favorite Hollow Knight ship? Favorite fanfic?
Why you do this
I have so many ships, because I’m the type of person to read what looks like a crackship and if it’s written with crunch then now I’m shipping it (hi grimmnet). It doesn’t take much and I don’t tend to have notps, my personality is a continuous shrug (me out here sometimes reading pale nightmare and causing you unknowing psychic indigestion)
Grollow was my first HK ship and I’d probably call it my favorite. I also really like Pale King/White Lady. Some of the more cursed ships I favor are Pale King/Radiance (or PK/Radi/WL) and Radiance/The Hollow Knight, exceptionally messy and toxic. There you go, Ashe, get me on main saying it all.
All of yours are the answer XD (I mean it). From Eyes to W&G/Red Sky to Butterfly, sorry not sorry. Other favorites are Soul of God, Form of Moth by @basilbellona, which has been my favorite HK fic since April 2022, and In Defiance of Time (and associated oneshots) by @ganondorf--apologist.
Now for a list of absolutely random things I’ve got in my bookmarks, which are excluding the multiple HK fics I have open but am still reading. I’m going to make too long a post just because I always want fics to get more love. Some of my other non-Ashyr favorites from bookmarks (no specific order and genre) are: Captivated, Until Dawn Shall Break, Not Too Late for Second Chances, Hold The Future With Silver Hands, Camouflage of Great Renown, It’s All Well Above Wonder Anyway, The Clock Stopped Ticking Forever Ago, Pale Revival, A Tribe Betrayed, Void Given Focus, Workshop Safety, To Reclaim A Dream, To Love A Lamprey, Moving Onward, Will Terribly, If You Will At All, I Swore I’d Have No More Knights In Shining Armor, We’re So Close But So Distant
Someday I’ll have even more to recommend when I finish reading the fics open in my tags (hi Tori fics, hello)
Nightmare King Grimm: Which boss battle was the most intense for you? The most satisfying to defeat?
What if I said Nightmare King Grimm
Each one I came across the first time I played faskfsdaf. I’m going to go with Absolute Radiance just because I remember the noises I was making on stream when I accidentally beat her in P5 the first time. But in terms of my favorite boss fight/the one I’m most satisfied about my skills in, I’ll go with the cliche of the NKG fight XD My one skill in this game is being able to absolutely bully the man and kill him hitless before the best part of his song plays. I put all my irl XP points into getting good at him. Other favorite fights are Sisters of Battle, and probably Pure Vessel even though they are gatekeeping me so hard in my all bindings P4 run and so I cry.
Hollow Knight ask meme: Mantis Lords, Broken Vessel, White Lady
Mantis Lords: Which NPC would you like to fight with as a team?
HMMMmm. Hard pick. What if I said Ogrim. What then.
Hornet also seems like a fun cinematic choice, considering how momentous her singular fast teamwork moment is for the Dream No More ending. If I picked Tiso, it’d be like babysitting but hey maybe he’d survive. The nailmasters would be fun visibly (and chaos logistically because they are Big and I would be so distracted by three of them sharing the screen with me).
(Am I allowed to pick Hollow? I want to pick Hollow for every answer.)
Broken Vessel: Which character would you bring back to life, if you could?
(Am I allowed to pick Hollow XD)
For any ending they die in, Hollow. I’m biased. What can I say. If I wanted to feel less guilty as a player, then those like Myla or the False Knight.
There is a part of me that straight up says the Radiance though just so she can be punted around, I’m not even gonna lie. (She would make an excellent squeaky toy. Rubber chicken noises.)
White Lady: Do you have any theories about the Higher Beings in Hallownest?
Not as many as you XD
I like to play with the higher beings, so my lore for them is a bit fluid and pieces change fic by fic. They are some of the most fun of the characters/historical characters of that world, and making theories is really very fun. Most of them are probably about PK. To no one’s surprise lol. Trying to pick a specific one and I feel like it'd make the post too long, help. I have a lot of half finished thoughts regarding Hallownest's higher beings/PK and the Fury of the Fallen lore tablet/corpse thing, that someday perhaps I will actually figure out. I'm rooting for you to make a theory about that weird lore tablet/corpse/charm
Quirrel, Elderbug, Myla? :3
Quirrel: What was your favorite thing to discover for the first time?
Every new map, I swear. I feel like I actually really got a thrill out of entering Crystal Peaks for the first time, even though it proceeded to be my least favorite map platforming-wise until I got better at gameplay. Same goes for the City and for Kingdom’s Edge (my beloved? For some reason?)
Or maybe my favorite thing to discover for the first time was just the stag station in Deepnest so I could stop my new player sobbing trip down there.
Elderbug: Do you stop to talk to all the NPCs? Who is your favorite?
I do. I must. It simply would be illegal if I didn’t. Unless I’m doing a speedrun and then the brain has decided it is illegal for me to talk to Elderbug so he gets run past and left to make his sad noise. Guilt.
Quirrel is a good dude, he let me sit on a bench with him. I love Cornifer so maybe it’s him. I was half convinced he was actually a higher being in my first playthrough because he was just so unstoppable, up until Deepnest. I’m tempted to say Divine just because she’s unhinged.
Myla: What’s your favorite song from the soundtrack?
NO
NO I CAN’T DO THIS ONE
(maniac who has gotten the sheet music now for every song in the soundtrack except for two so far)
I guess White Palace. I guess. If I had to pick. But agh. I’m also partial to Pale Court but after much time going back and forth on it, I think the og White Palace OST beats it. Combat music wise, Sealed Vessel is the song of all time, but Broken Vessel and Nightmare King are responsible for pushing me into buying the game.
