I need more content of Tolys beating the shit out of Ivan.
Now, for my own nefarious reasons, I asked my German (Schleswig-Holstein) friend today if there are any stereotypes about modern Brandenburg federal state in Germany, and she sent me this ABSOLUTE GEM
(Since I follow the chain of events that today’s Bundesland Brandenburg is personified by the same guy as personified the former Margraviate, part of the kingdom, etc, etc, these days Gilbert-Prussia would absolutely annoy the shit out of him with this song I CAN FUCKING SEE IT HAPPENING. With the other Bundesländer joining in.)
Basically the stereotype is that the area is very rural and there’s nothing to do and everyone’s moving out and shit and yes stereotypes are bad but in no right does this song have to be so fucking funny🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
PLEASE.
I CAN’T.
Wah, I made almost the same joke the other day!
OH YES MARK BRANDENBURG.
also a meme spoiler to a WIP which is the only reason I haven’t drawn this. YET. Except this was made before I even heard the song and this is just his normal face.
Also, here’s where the screenshots are from and where u can find English translation and stuff. I’M REALLY SORRY.
my piece for the @hwsfemmephenomenon zine, featuring Ukraine!! she's in a traditional uzbek chapan, eating somsa next to uzbekistan wearing traditional ukrainian vyshyvanka and eating strawberry varenyky!! I gave ukraine blue and gold to reflect the colors of her flag <3 I hope you enjoy this piece, and pls check out the awesome pieces from the other collaborators in the zine, they've all done so wonderful <3
Why yes I did indeed draw them for Valentines Day don't you worry! Anyway they're supposed to be wearing the outfits from the Valentines café collab (Lovino doesn't have his grey jacket because I kind of hate it ngl)
Some first draft sketches

…or new unexpected and un-asked for series, where I yap in detail about one headcanon on physical appearence, personality or history of my Ukraine interpretation at a time
This has been a thing that confused the hell out of me for ages, because her hair colour in the anime & official art exists on a spectrum from grey to white to blonde to ash blonde to yellow ??? (which may or may not be due to an art style change and had hapenned to 75% of characters at least) but REGARDLESS, I decided to put a twist on it
So, in my vision, her hair colour is best-described as «світло-русявий натуральний колір волосся»; which would, as per most suitable photos I found on the internet, loosely mean this:
So, you see; blonde, but not really blonde; depends on the lighting; the best English equivalent to «світло-русявий» my brain could think of was a borderline between «dark blonde», «light brown» and «ash-blonde», which coincidentally could all be applied to describe Ukraine’s hair in different depictions at different points
Furthermore, many Ukrainians on my experience would describe their hair as «русяве», ranging from темно-русяве for darker colours, to світло-русяве for lighter, to the point where it seems like a safe option in case your hair is not exactly dark or not 100% light and you are not sure what to reply. And even in folklore you’ll find a «руса коса до пояса»; «русява коса – дівоча краса»; or occasionally hair being compared to gold as well, i.e. «ой у полі жито, а в дівчини коса золота», translating too «there was wheat in the field, a girl had a golden braid» (more to come on her hairstyle!!)
by the way WHEAT. YET ANOTHER WAY I LIKE TO THINK OF HER HAIR COLOUR, is that it has the colour of wheat
I know you know what wheat looks like, just a moment of appreciation
And finally — Ukraine’s русявий hair colour changes slightly throughout the year! In the summer, when she gets lots of sun, it bleaches Ukraine’s hair a bit (UV light breaks down melanin in the hair blah blah blah); moreover it looks lighter in contrast to the skin tan she gets (again, we’ll get to this later); compared to winter when the tan fades and the hair would look visibly darker due to less sun exposure. And I mean like:
So, to sum up, I see Ukraine’s hair colour as „світло-русявий”, something closest to „dark blonde”, „light brown”, „ash blonde” or simply „wheat colour”, which tends to look darker in winter due to less sun exposure and lighter in the summer ;)
by the way fun fact, I’m NOT ignoring your guys’ asks; I just wanna draw something for each and do them justice, which happens to require some time (!!!)
have you talked about why her last name is chernenko? id love to hear about it!
[upd: it turned out that Himaruya never listed a name for her in the original post, just in the wiki; so this post is kinda irrelevant]
That’s a good question, I’ve got no idea tbh🎉
I know Himaruya listed this as a surname he liked for Ukraine; and etymologically, surnames ending in –enko are typical for the country (I’ve got one lol)
One theory states that this surname specifically comes from the old-Ukrainian word for "black", "черний/chernyi", which evolved into modern-Ukrainian "чорний/chornyi". That’s why I am contemplating between Chernenko and Chornenko for her
It also might be a reference to one of the ex-soviet leaders who had the surname Chernenko and I REALLY HOPE it isn’t he wasn’t even Ukrainian ew wtf (😭😭)
ships with ukraine are not beating trophy wife allegations, would it hurt you people so much to give her more of a personality than just being caring, motherly, and nice? like really, so much of ship stuff with her is ukraine being an object of adoration and the one giving affection but not so much receiving it as much. she's always perfect, somehow, often in contrast to her partner. and it's quite a Problem, portraying a woman, especially an eastern european woman, like that.
and to make it sound less vague, i'm referring to canukr (not all of it, and i generally like the ship) and engukr (a rarepair, but still)

i need a fic where they go to therapy together
now, numbers explained⬇️
! This is hugely simplified and by no means am I saying the situation was the same or anything; no it wasn‘t, but it‘s interesting to see the paralelles !
1 - referring to years of English/British rule over Ireland and Russian rule over Ukraine.
2 - in both cases native language/culture was heavily disadvantaged in favour of the coloniser’s language/culture. What a surprise.
3 - he’s talking about the Great Famine of 1845-51, exacerbated by Britain’s lack of reaction and continued exports of provision from Ireland. Popular attitude being that „God has sent famine to punish the Irish”.
4 - she’s talking about 1933 Holodomor famine, a man-made famine where the soviet version of the Russian empire deliberately took grain and other stuff from peasants forcibly as a part of „state grain requisition“ and also forbid emigration so peasants were trapped to starve. Duh.
5 - Irish rebellions against the British rule, notably in 1798, 1803, 1820s O’Connel movement, 1848, 1867 etccc
6 - Ukrainian rebellions under Russian rule, for example Mazepa in early 1700s, Koliivschyna 1768, Haydamaky early 1800s etc
7 - the first Universal of the Ukrainian Central Council in 1917 proclaimed autonomy, not a full separation from Russia.
8 - similarly, Ireland aimed to get home rule first, which also kinda means staying within the empire but having their own parliament. But the developments pushes both nations to a fight for independence eventually.
9 - Thus we get Irish war of independence 1919-21 and Ukrainian liberational struggle 1917-22.
10 - Ireland ended up in a civil war following the signing of the Anglo-Irish treaty in 1922-23; In Ukraine…ugh, it was a mess, but to cut the long story short, there was UPR in bitter rivalry with the Hetmanate, there were communists, anarchists, the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic with different struggles from the rest of the Ukrainian People’s republic, there were local leaders…yes. I mean. Mad shit.
11. Unlike Ukraine, that got de-facto occupied by USSR, Ireland, except for 6 counties, became almost independent following the 1920s struggles.
12. „Almost” because it emerged as a British dominion, a free state rather than the republic; all the way until 1949. And the tensions over those six counties imploded again in 1970s.
13. And Ukraine is still. Fighting for her life against Russia as I’m typing this. Friendly reminder.
I could go on for ages about this; the economic impact, the nature of independence movements – but I’ll spare you for now. Ukrainians, have a meme I made in 2023
