be bored. find a short film titled 'Juliet dans Paris'.
think of Artemis Fowl. watch the movie.
... yeah. erm. not the same Juliet.
everyone drop whatever you're doing right now and go read this.
another amazing work by @bittersuite-iv who is very surely becoming one of my favourite AF fanfic authors right now.
hi fowldom! i finally finished chapter one of my arcane-inspired artemis fowl au!
if you enjoy dark magic, apocalypses, knights, light biopunk, lemurs, or complicated relationships, this could be the fic for you :)
answered on Reddit already but still reblogging this great initiative ! loved taking a trip down memory lane <3
I'm working on a post about online AF fan communities in the early 2000s, and I am curious to hear whether anyone on here participated in or was aware of some of these groups (FWIW, I cross-posted this on Reddit and have a few notes regarding the francophone fansphere!).
Criminality (Fanlore WikiΒ link) was a fanfiction archive (2003-2016) where community members would share recommendations, create fanfiction prompt challenges, host fanfiction exchanges/events, and discuss the AF fan community (e.g., Mary Sues. Personally, I couldn't care less about the "quality" of people's OCs, as if I don't like a work, I simply stop reading it, easy-as, but fandom culture at the time was... fractious, to put it lightly, when it came to Mary Sues).
It's no longer possible to access the Criminality webpage; I can't even find much online about "breakthepressure", which was presumably the content management system (CMS) for Criminality.
Around the time Criminality came into existence, the Orion Awards collection was created on Fanfiction Net (~2001). Each year, fans would nominate fanfictions that they particularly enjoyed to be archived in the Orion Awards collection. Although I was too young to participate in fandom/use the internet at the time, my understanding of events (based on what I can find on the Wayback Machine) is that the Fanfiction Net Orion Awards community predated the Orion Awards webpage. The Fanfiction Net Orion Awards collection houses some, but not all, of the Orion Awards winners.
For the Orion Awards, fanfictions would be nominated and awarded across particular categories. Using the Wayback Machine to access the now-defunct breakthepressure Orion Awards webpage, I found the categories for the awards, which I have attached in screenshot form below.
Around 2007, the community on Criminality moved to the breakthepressure site for the Orion Awards.
What I have shared in based in research rather than personal experience with any of these communities, so I would be curious to hear about whether any fans remember what it was like to be a fan online between 2000-2012, as well as whether there are any other fan sites/communities beyond Criminality and the Orion Awards that you remember!
Absolutely AMAZING fic. Go read this if you haven't, it's a jewel.
hello fowldom! do you think that artemis and holly are the friends of all time? does the passage about artemisβ magic in the time paradox perpetually rotate in your mind? do you enjoy our teenage criminal mastermind also being an awkward loser? then do i have the fic for you!
i finished this one up last week but i figured i could try yelling about it into the void for a bit :)
Juliet would obviously be very much into Chappell Roan, and I suspect Butler would too. But I feel the one song that Artemis would really tolerate being blasted full force during car rides is 'Good Luck Babe'. Because there's NO way in hell he resists the chance to sing-yell πΆβ¨"I TOLD YOU SOOO"β¨πΆ at the top of his lungs like the petty princess he is π π»

Quick fanart of @eldewinddolly 's Artemis Experiments Weird, seriously one of the best Artemis Fowl fanfictions out there, go read it if you haven't!
Again, a cookie if you get which character of the Mondo Emerso artbooks inspired it XD
Silly very self-indulgent Artemis Fowl x figure skating drawing π With, as @laeliana suggested, Artemis and Minerva as an ice dance couple ! (I know it makes no sense, it's alright, it's for the β¨vibesβ¨) The pose is inspired by my fellow Frenchies Evgenia Lopareva and Geoffrey Brissaud's free dance - first because, well, it slays and it's iconic, and second because I feel like it fits Artemis and Minerva's vibe pretty nicely π
The perspective and colours are SO wonky on this one, I'm a bit frustrated with Minerva because I feel like it's hard to recognise her without her signature glasses... but well, it was just something I scribbled during Europeans' Zamboni times in only a few hours, and I had a lot of fun, so I guess it's okay π
Also FUCK YES NIINA PETROKINA EUROPEAN CHAMPION LET'S GOOOOOOO ππͺπͺπ
Had the passing thought the other day of like⦠that one scene in TEC where Fowl Senior has just woken up and Artemis immediately begins rattling off stuff about the family finances and like⦠I know how people usually interpret that scene but hear me out:
Artemis immediately doing so because heβs a kid and heβs been essentially all alone trying to keep all their finances secure (to save his father in the first place) and heβs worked so hard on it, and likeβ¦ when a kid needs someone to fix something, who do they usually turn to first? A parent.
So Artemis starts rattling it off like βgreat we can both work on this now, cause now my dadβs hereβ and then five minutes later heβs thinking βshit!! my fatherβs doesnβt want to fix it!!β
β¨β½ΰΌβΌ Fairy Ring β½ΰΌβΌβ¨ It's been too long since I had the time to draw my favorite lil gremlin. A somewhat-confirmed-but-still-a-bit-of-an-headcanon I've always had is that Artemis has pretty much always been obsessed with fairies - obsessed, as in reading all the books and resources he can find on the topic, filling notebooks upon notebooks with sketches, paintings and scientific observations, composing entire symphonies on banshees and various magical creatures... ... and also, willing to spend entire days observing the fairy ring he found inside Fowl estate's woods hoping to find an actual fairy. Here, he's found a dragonfly (as a nod to Pan's Labyrinth), that seems to be strangely glowing, and he is very happy in his mischievous way π Do not worry, the dragonfly was left unscathed - Artemis tried to capture it, failed (ending up covered in mud after splatting face-first in the grass like the athlete he is), went to the manor to ask Butler to help, was thoroughly chewed out by both Butler and his parents for disappearing for hours, and was ultimately sent to take a warm bath after spending an entire afternoon soaking wet in the rain. He did catch a cold, and was very upset that he might have had the chance to capture a tiny fairy but let it slip. Just be patient, Arty π (Now, is the dragonfly actually magical or not ? I had fun playing with a surreal lighting to left it open to interpretation π§ββοΈ)
:333 I'm super happy you liked my lil ramblings ! As for daemon choices, I read all your posts ! A swan for my darling Angeline is just spot on. I was dead set on a butterfly for years (for all the reasons you listed), and more recently on moths, for their association with silk (elegant, soft, expensive) and light (always chasing it, often at their own expanse). Some moths are also specifically associated with change, which I feel fits her intense emotional lability quite well. Some species are also considered pests, some as bad omens. It's a vibe that fits how she can sometimes become a danger not only to herself but others. I was specifically thinking of moths like the Luna or the White Witch ; and the Madagascan sunset because it's so pretty. But the idea of a swan for her ? *chef's kiss*. I love it. Tim, I agree with you, is tough. I like all your ideas, but my favoured one is the snake. Butler, if his daemon is female, I'd love it to be a bear. It would be terribly impractical in daily life, but this dude is the most mama bear ever and they would make an absolutely deadly duo. But as you develop in your tags, I'm also very partial to queer Butler, and love the idea of him having a male daemon. Livestock guardian dog is perfect for him <3 (and now I have an immense urge to draw Butler's daemon carrying baby Artemis' daemon around scruffing her neck Γ©.Γ¨) Juliet, it's funny but she's the one I've always envisioned with a lemur or a lil monkey. She's a smart fun-loving daredevil and I feel like it fits her the most. But I agree that a nod to the vivid green and overall bright colours would be so cool ! Why not a grasshopper ?
And now, Artemis. I have a special theory for him : I think his daemon would not settle and always keep her shifting abilities. I know it sounds a bit Mary Sue-esque, but if you consider it, doesn't it fit him perfectly ? Artemis to me is most characterised by his funambulist dynamic - he's always, always walking a tightrope between two extremes : innocence and dangerousness, good and evil, fairies and humans, empathy and ruthlessness, justice and criminality... and childhood and adulthood. One of the most striking thing he says in the first book is how he's still just enough of a child to believe in magic, but enough of an adult to exploit them. It's his greatest strength, but it also isolates him so much. That's why he's such a lonely character, to me ; he never belongs quite anywhere, because he's always toeing the line between one thing and its complete opposite. At his core, Artemis is unique and a trailblazer, a changeling never quite a human, never quite a fairy, never quite a child, never quite an adult.
How to better express that than a daemon that forever keeps shifting like a child's ? I also love this idea because it doesn't have to be obvious. Artemis and his daemon are both smart ; they know how to take best advantage of that. I feel like by the time they know most daemons settle, they'd pick a shape they like (a silky silfaka lemur, or my two favourites - a raven, or a rat) and pretend to be settled. I believe of his close ones, only Butler and maybe Holly would know the truth. Artemis' daemon would only shift when it's necessary - to complete a plan (like turning into a smaller animal, a fish, an insect to sneak stealthily somewhere) or to scare an enemy to death (WHAT THE HELL THIS GROWN MAN'S DAEMON IS SHIFTING WHAAAA...). Now combine that with the TLG idea of the daemon now being capable of roaming around miles away from Artemis... He's as powerful, and as othered as can be. And that's just so him.
also the idea of AF plot with daemons is kind of upsetting, like wtf happens during butler and artemis' respective deaths. does butler's daemon fade away for that time butler is dead?? or does her body remain because artemis kept his brain on ice???
and for artemis' death.... if his soul was torn from his body but remained tied to earth, what does that mean for his daemon? his body dies but his daemon remains alive and conscious??? that would be so fucked up within the lore of daemons. my fucking god. like she's a symbol of hope and certainty that artemis can be brought back, but it's also horrifying and upsetting to see her walking around like a ghost, like something reanimated and fundamentally against nature.
how do these deaths affect their relationships with their daemons? or the invisible strings between them? like, would artemis' daemon be able to travel freely apart from him after his resurrection- oh my god i just remembered the cloning thing, what are even the repercussions and implications of that
Been LOVING these AF daemons post by OP <3 I've been thinking about this particular post lately, here are some of my personal thoughts on deaths in the AF books with daemons attached. For TLG, I actually believe Artemis' daemon would disappear at first ; because I love this scene from The Amber Spyglass, where Lyra has to abandon Pan so she can go to the Underworld - and I feel like in this case, it would be the opposite - Artemis' daemon refuses to go with him. Just imagine Artemis, actually terrified of dying, begging his daemon to not leave him alone, and her firmly reassuring him - "remember. we will come back, we decided and promised to. so I have to stay." That would be absolutely heartwrenching (as the original scene is), but also I feel a good depiction of Artemis' resolve being stronger than death. And then, imagine all the others (Butler, Holly, the parents, everyone else) suddenly see Artemis' daemon coming back, roaming around the grave. Refusing to talk for now, but being there - alone.
The cloning I think doesn't have particular implications ; it's only a mere corporeal form for the soul to inhabit, so as long as the daemon is still there, it's okay. The scene could even be quite touching... They'd bring the clone to the daemon, she's inspect it carefully, then after a few minutes, she'd just curl up into a little furry ball on the clone's chest and wait. And he'd wake up. Afterwards, Artemis would probably be able to be separated from his daemon like the witches. Maybe the clone and the daemon would have difficulties bonding at first, but at least she'd be able to help him with his memories. As for Butler's death in TEC, it would mean twisting a tiny bit how the daemons work in HDM, but I can imagine that the daemon has a few more moments after Butler dies before completely disappearing (as if his soul tried to cling to Artemis for as long as he could before fading away). Knowing that, Artemis manages to bring him to the freezer just in time for the daemon to join Butler in the freezer and sleep with him until Holly revives them both. I wonder if it would be interesting and meaningful to have Butler's daemon, by the time Artemis manages to put him to safety, be too exhausted from clinging on the world to crawl into the freezer with his human, so Artemis has to lift her up himself. As touching another's daemon is super taboo and forbidden, maybe it would be an interesting way, similar to Butler telling his first name to Artemis before dying, to show how strenghtened their bond is now that death has threatened to tear them apart and they would not have it. Also, Butler being the vulnerable one for once, and Artemis taking care and charge of him, whatever it takes and whatever rules of the universe he has to break in the process. I don't know because in HDM it's implied that touching another's daemon has a more mature connotation, and I wouldn't want this idea to be interpreted that way. I still think it would be sweet to see Artemis caring for Butler's daemon tho.
Well, these were my ramblings x') (as for what daemon would everyone have, that's another conversation and this post is long enough, but I might expand another time)
also the idea of AF plot with daemons is kind of upsetting, like wtf happens during butler and artemis' respective deaths. does butler's daemon fade away for that time butler is dead?? or does her body remain because artemis kept his brain on ice???

Fanfic of a fanfic. Inspired by Eldewind Dolly's story "Artemis Experiments Weird".
--------------------
Selene was distraught. Artemis, her father, didn't care. Except this time she couldn't run away from that fact. He had said it straight to her face, with no remorse and no regret, before simply walking away. Her creator was her first bully. She had to fix this. She had to do somethingβ anything. So she walked to his room and waited for him. She sat on the bed for a while, then read a book, then drew for a bit, then surfed the webβ¦ where was Artemis? Selene was almost beginning to lose hope, when the bedroom door opened. Artemis, Seleneβs father, her creator, was standing in the doorway.
Artemis slammed the door and stormed over to Selene. She was wearing one of his mother's old dresses.
βWhat have you done?β he nearly shouted at her.
Selene was terrified, because she hadn't done anything. She hadn't even said a single word today! The words flowed out of her mouth before she could think about how they could be interpreted.
βFather, please! I didn't do anything, I swear. I just want you to love me! I love you so much, creator. I just wish you'd be like a real father and treat your creation right!β
The silence was deafening. Artemis's eyes were wide in anger. How dare she talk back to him? Artemis backhanded her with a surprising amount of strength, and immediately regretted it. For one, his hand hurts now. Twoβ¦he felt guilt. For the first time in a while, he felt guilt that lasted for more than just a few seconds. Selene was shocked by the expression on her creator's face, her eyes brimming with tears. Artemis then cradled Selene's head in his hands, gently caressing her hurt cheek with his thumb. He felt so bad. He kissed her cheek gently and sat down next to her.
βSelene, I'm so sorry. I don't know what got into meβ¦β
Instead of responding, Selene simply hugged her creator and snuggled up against him, feeding on the affection.

Oh dear oh dear. So many things. Here's just a lil snippet : > Artemis still wears suits (sorry fowlblue), but more... vintage ones. I want him to acknowledge that everyone sees him as that "creepy ghost of a Victorian child" and go "oh? alright then" and show up at work looking like a full-on scary baby dandy, most notably ditching the tie for a lavalliΓ¨re (pinned down with a golden Celtic fibula, maybe?) and the loafers for leather laced boots. The vibes? Immaculate. > More acknowledgment that the fairies folklore is Artemis long-standing special interest/hyperfixation since early childhood that even his father's disapproval (bUt mAgiC iSn'T ReAl gRoW uP) couldn't shut down. That child is deeply autistic and it seems like a not too obnoxious and cute way to show it. > MORE π ANGELINE π AND π MENTAL π ILLNESS π > MORE π JULIET π ARTEMIS π FRIENDSHIP π SIBLING-LIKE π RIVALRY π BANTER π TOUGH LOVE π Now for the fairies: > Half-goblin Holly for the win !! Already developed a bit of her backstory in a prev post, but so much fun stuff to alter in the books with that concept. She lives in a goblins neighborhood were only the kids like her, all the adults think she's a traitor and a sell-out. At work she's not as much harassed for being a woman, but almost all the officers hiss-hiss-hiss when they walk past her. Book 2 changes massively, because Holly is absolutely torn by the B'wa Kell rebellion, she feels like she should choose sides but doesn't want to. Artemis can bond with her on being branded as a criminal just because of your birth certificate. I repeat : Artemis can bond with her on being branded as a criminal just because of your birth certificate. > Let the fairies be just as judgmental, racist as they are in the books, but let them be called out on it and damn, just explore it. They call themselves pacifists yet they are are run by an all-powerful police-state. It's actually an amazing idea but it's just... left there. Explore it ! Corruption and immorality isn't just a humans' problem ! > Justice for the goblins. Everyone believes they are the stupidest fairy family? Fine. Maybe they are - but does that mean they deserve to be treated like inferior beings, only worthy of mockery and disrespect ? Nope. Also, according to who's standards are they the stupidest fairy family ? There are so many forms of intelligence. Maybe theirs just don't correspond to the golden standards of the elves and centaurs but nobody bothered to try and understand that. > More fairy and supernatural folklore from various cultures incorporated ! Banshees, selkies, onryo, aswangs, changelings... So many possibilities ! And bonus round, if I were to adapt AF to the screen (in an animated series because I do believe this is the way) : > Make it a mockumentary true-crime show, from the fairies' POV. Featuring interviews from all the main cast, video and sound archives (from the LEP ? from the Fowl family ?), reconstitutions... hell, even actual memories extracted from the Fowl gang after TEC. Not very ethical I know, but again - a true-crime show. > Controversial take, but I would majorly revamp dwarves. No more dwarves, they just are not a fairy species. Mulch would stay more or less the same character in terms of personality, but I would change his species from dwarf to troll - a nordic troll, the ones that change to stone when hit by the sun and change back at night. Make them a mineral species, that are literally made of dirt, rock and moss - how does Mulch because a burglar then ? Well, he's made of dirt and sand. He can sip through walls. He can shapeshift, maybe. That idea is still very much a WIP, but even though I know it's iconic, I don't thing a farting dwarf can actually translate from books to cinema. I don't see how it can't be anything else but extremely cringe. Let's stop there for now, but yeah. I have a lot of more or less unhinged ideas :D
Yβknow what? Iβm curious, and I wanna talk again-
Fellow AF fans, tell me how you would make Artemis Fowl if you were behind the writing wheel. It can be anything from βJuliet features more heavily in the plotβ to reframing the LEP and fairies as a whole. I want to know!
Iβll give you mine- Iβd make Artemis more interested in magical creatures than tech alone, and Iβd have him wear suits less!
