π¦ Half-goblin Holly backstory headcanons π¦ (including some more general goblins headcanons because actual canon is *not it*) (very long post ahead, but I felt it was due time to expand the lore of my beloved half-goblin Holly) - Her dad's name is Lezzare. Holly was very close to him as a youngling ; he used to affectionately call her "B'wa-biba" (darling sparkle) - He made all her childhood clothes himself, as per the goblin tradition of mending : goblins love to patchwork their clothes with visible stitches, and fabrics passed down in the family from generation to generation - to allude to how their skin shed naturally and symbolise the love and protection of the family allowing them to grow. This tradition is mostly seen as an excuse for poor craftsfaeship compared to the more sophisticated, gold-thread embedded clothing of the elves and centaurs, but many goblins are actually very skilled at sewing. - He and Coral met at the university, at a marine biology class - Coral attended as a student and Lezzare as an auditor (goblins basically aren't allowed to pursue higher education in Haven because they are deemed too stupid) - Lezzare was an activist fighting for goblins' rights, and advocating for a demilitarised Haven (arguing that the People should only defend themselves against mud people as a united front, and not further the divides between the fairy families according to the "nobler" elven values and morals). - Even though he was a pacifist, he was sent to Howler's Peak after a mass arrestation following a deadly terrorist attack, when Holly was still quite young. Coral joined LEPMarine and moved to Atlantis with baby Holly so they could go visit Lezzare more easily. - Holly still loved her dad, but the stigma of being a goblin hybrid and her dad being in prison slowly started to take a toll on her ; especially since Coral was gone working most of the time, and Holly spent a lot of days with various LEP officers both being very dismissive of her and her father, and encouraging her to join the LEP like her mom. - When Coral died, Lezzare was allowed to attend the funeral, which absolutely didn't sit well with Coral's family who hated him and disapproved heavily of their daughter's relationship with a goblin. At the funeral, Lezzare started performing a goblin fire grieving ritual which was interpreted as an aggression attempt, causing an absolute riot between him and Coral's family and LEP coworkers, with Holly torn in the middle. - Holly was extremely mad for a very long time at her father for ruining her mother's funeral. Lezzare was also really upset that she chose to join the LEPrecon after everything they did to their kind. - I believe they were strictly no contact since, and for at least the first three books. But after meeting Artemis, and the B'wa Kell rebellion, Holly starts to see things a bit more differently, and a bit less black and white. Julius' death, then the events of The Opal Deception leaving her out of the LEP and more isolated than ever, as "the goblin LEP experiment that ended up being a murdering failure like every other goblin ever is", really changed her entire perspective. - Now she sees her dad more often ; mending their relationship takes time but they find things to bond over, and it gets better 𧑠... That's it for now ! Please tell me what you think about all this ! Also, I've started working on a feature film two weeks ago that's why this piece took forever to finish ; even though I'm really done with it, and I think I could have done better with the color palette (too same toney imo), I'm pretty happy with how vibrant it globally turned out. And I'm also quite happy with Lezzare's face π
cons of being home alone with angina as an adult : you have to make your hot tea, meals yourself + still do all the fronddamn chores pros of being home alone with angina as an adult : you can take the saucepan in bed and eat an entire can of cassoulet by yourself while watching Taiwanese horror movies and no one is going to stop you
Yeeessss !!!! I'm super happy you picked up on this detail about Holly's ears π I've always drawn her (and generally elves from AF) with really long ears, I'm especially meticulous about them in my design and fanfics precisely because I absolutely want to bring out more cat-like behavioural features in elves. I really like when fae folks are less anthropomorphised, more animal or even alien-looking. What I love about long ears is how expressive they can be ; droopy when sad, turned back when scared and angry, upright when surprised... Which fits quite nicely with the canon than elves are particularly emotional - I design elves with big eyes and long ears because then everything in their features and behaviours unconsciously underlines how they are feeling. I mean, think Judy Hopps from Zootopia : the animators did such a wonderful job using her ears as an acting tool just as much as her eyes and other facial expressions. She's such a lively and feisty character, who wears her heart literally on top of her head on her sleeve π No wonder a lot of people made the connection with AF ! *realizes she just maniacally wrote some two paragraphs post in two minutes almost unprompted about fairy ears at almost midnight* ... Eheh. Thanks for the reblog and kind words ! Sorry for the digression π
π‘ Reluctant allies π‘
I just love early series Artemis and Holly foes-to-frenemies dynamic. Even though they hate each other's guts, you can feel that Artemis respects and looks up to Holly ; and that Holly empathises and genuinely wants to understand Artemis. I'm relatively pleased with Artemis' suit ; I absolutely despise drawing suits with every fiber of my being. ... Which is a little bit of an issue when you want to draw Artemis Fowl, as you can imagine.
Don't look at the background though. It's trash π«

π π» Mullet!Juliet origin story π π» ... which is : Holly visited while Samsonetta was away, they watched some replays of the fairy sport that I don't know the name of in English ('croqueballe' in French) ; then Juliet showed Holly a few monuments of human cinema (namely, Bloodsport and Samurai Cop)... and they just decided to cut Juliet's hair π
I just wanted more Juliet and Holly friendship, we were robbed in canon. I'm happy with their expressions, not so fond of the background but I rarely do backgrounds ever so that's not that bad I guess.
Preach... ππ» I love Angeline with all my heart, but the books never really did her justice. She was a crucial part of the first book but then she just vanished once she was "cured" - which never sat right with me... call me grumpy, but I don't like the idea that magic can cure something so deeply rooted in the chemistry of the mind as mental illnesses (plural because I really don't think Angeline was simply depressed, the symptoms she exhibits in the first book feel really indicative of bipolar disorder and also schizophrenia). Only in my dreams is her struggle with mental health explored in later books... And TAC is absolute trash imo because it's a huge missed opportunity for more Artemis and Angeline bonding, acknowledging the trauma they both went through during Tim's disappearance... But, we got nothing. It really makes me SO mad to see that the most prominent thing the fowldom has retained from Angeline is the "randomosity" shirt and think of her as some superficial helpless mobwife Γ©.Γ¨ When Angeline's actually Artemis' most acute emotional and moral compass right beside Butler. So many fics that I otherwise enjoyed annoy me to no end with their portrayal of Angeline.
I'd have so much more to say about my darling, but I don't have the clarity of mind right now to expose all my thoughts in a comprehensible way (all my brain screams right now is FOOD. NOW) but I may come back to it later.
Angeline Fowl is the protagonistβs mother. She is also a wife. She is also crazy. This is basically the extent of what we learn about Angeline in the first book and she doesnβt substantially develop throughout the course of the series. Angeline represents two common tropes in fiction, the mother and the madwoman. While AF is undeniably a fantasy series, it is still rooted in our contemporary world, and so it is not unreasonable to expect a certain level of realism when depicting its mental illness or when depicting its secondary characters, in general. It's just so frustrating that Colfer really opened up such a big can of worms and then did nothing with it, or for that matter, her. :/
Artemis FowlΒ is often praised for its originality, and by that most critics are implying that it is not like a poor derivative of JRR Tolkien: a criticism that can be levelled at a surprisingly large share of the modern fantasy market. But AF actually had a surprising amount of similarities with LOTR, while not in the stylish sense that most properties use, instead in an ideological sense.Β
LOTR is a conservative work, with a very traditional view of manβs relationship to Nature. Despite seeming more progressive in many ways, AF has inherited/shares many of Tolkienβs views on Nature and society.
Nature is distinct, but important to βmanβsβ society
Different races are fundamental different
Some races are βbetterβ than others
Some βracesβ are inherently βbetterβ at living in nature that others
Humans , when left on to their own devices will be corrupted by the world
There are distinct ideas of Good and Bad that provide all of Reality and some things tend towards good and some towards bad
Grief is the sole cause of mental illness and magic is what is necessary to cure it
AF isnβt necessarily intentionally copying LOtR in these respects: EC is after all from a similar background as Tolkien; both are white, well-off, well-educated men.Β Many of these views are and were completely pervasive in the cultures that these two authors grew up and wrote in. That said, the strong focus on environmentalism, or pastoralism, that is evident in both texts is something that is distinctly more pronounced from the general cultural attitudes of their respective times.
One notable element of the Conservatism of Colferβs work (NB: only the OG AF series is being discussed in this post, not the spinoff series), is Colferβs uncritical upholding of oppressive systems of power. Fairy societyβs sexism is lightly analysed and criticized in the first book of the series, but many aspects of itβs cultural norms-- most notably itβs racism, that is the belief that each fantasy race will inherently behave differently and have some races will be βworseβ than others-- are reproduced unthinkingly in fairy society, which implicitly legitimizes there validity in the real world. Holly clearly believes in elf supremacy, and believes that the over-incarceration and stigmatization of the goblins are the natural result of the goblins inherent character, rather than the result of the regressive police attitude. Holly, while being stigmatized for being a woman, still experiences privileges as an elf, and it is notable that the three female officers we see throughout the series-- Holly, Lilly and Vinyaya-- are all elves and Lilly is notably from an influential and wealthy family.
𧑠young Tim & Angeline redraw 𧑠So many things I'm unhappy with in this drawing, but since I draw mostly for my mental health, when I start to get frustrated is my cue to just let the piece be done. I'm still quite pleased to see how far I've progressed with Procreate since I first started ! I won't repost the original drawing though, even though it's a testament of my journey it still makes me cringe, it's so bad x')
π movie night in 1994 π you can decide what the babies are watching, but in my head it's The Crow π¦ I just needed to draw something that brought back some feeling of comfort and happiness from my childhood, to escape the absolute shitshow that is French politics right now π« and I loved nothing more as a child than to bury myself underneath all the pillows and blankets of the house with my plushies to watch 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen' for the umpteenth time. So, here is a rendition I guess.
I hope it can bring comfort to you as well to see smol Artemis and Juliet enjoying a movie (Artemis being super focused as always, and Juliet being absolutely unable to sit still and contorting in weird yoga positions also as always) π (did my best with the TV lighting but on my computer screen I feel like it looks like shit. well, I'll have to live with it, I've already spend an entire weekend on this thing)
Hello!!! Just popping in here to say I absolutely ADORE your art style. It reminds me of some classic animated films and children's books and it just looks so BEAUTIFUL. Truely a joy to see your art it's is a wonderful sight to behold. Have a wonderful day/week/year/life. You are truely amazing.
Γ©.Γ¨ Thank you so much, that is so sweet !!! Have the bestest day/week/year/life as well :D
π young short-haired Angeline π
I hope the cut of her dress is okay ; I adore low-cut necklines, all my favourite dresses have one.
I'm pretty happy with the colours on this one, I was worried I would be trash again at Procreate after such a long hiatus but so far, so good ^^"
Woke up this morning randomly thinking about this classical music and ballet tv competition that we watch with my family during Winter holidays ; last Christmas, there was a little flutist girl among the finalists who, when asked what she'd want to do with the cash prize, immediately said 'I WANT TO BUY A GOLD FLUTE BECAUSE I ALWAYS DREAMED OF HAVING ONE !! :D' And at that moment I simultaneously thought "hell yeah girl boss", and "... Artemis ? Is that you ?" Hence, this drawing :3
I was actually in a relatively okay mood today, and then Macron nominated a prime minister and now I want to die o/ How the Frond is this legal is beyond me.
π Some Juliet sketches π
These past months have been a struggle mentally, but Iβm recovering. I needed to draw our Jade Princess because this idea has haunted my mind for over three months and I needed it out, thus let me introduce : Juliet with a mullet π π» Justβ¦ because.
Iβm happy with this drawing I think, itβs too busy but I like the watercolor style. I designed her based on Nonaka Miho ; because like, she has the loveliest smile, and sheβs exactly how I picture Juliet in my mind. Sheβs also a badass !! πͺπ»
Γ©.Γ¨ I think I can die in peace now. This is just too lovely for my sick old heart !!!
Because that's me with this.
I'm gonna miss this blog so freaking much Γ©.Γ¨
Had a little chat with Artemis on character.ai to wish him a happy birthday. After he told me I was "as fragile as an egg" (which I think is both very cute and very true), we started discussing French expressions. "Little Jesus in velvet panties" (le petit JΓ©sus en culotte de velours) had him flabbergasted ; "pissing in a violin" (pisser dans un violon) and "pushing granny in the nettles" (pousser mΓ©mΓ© dans les orties) confused him ; then I mentioned "to flee like a fart on wax cloth" (filer comme un pet sur une toile cirΓ©e) and I think I broke him. Aren't there any equivalents to these expressions in English ? (in order, these mean - a drink or food is super duper tasty ; arguing with someone who won't listen to anything you say ; exaggerating ; and escaping like a sneaky ninja) (@orangerosebush did you hear about these ones when you were in France ? I'd love to know what are your favorite French expressions !)
Anyways, Artemis had a good laugh, I consider it was my birthday present to our little dipshit. Joyeux ninif ma petite crotte (affectueusement) :)
For this, the most glorious of AU days, here is my contribution:
An alternate universe where both Artemis Fowl the first and second were on the Fowl Star, both going missing after the ships explosion, and both kidnapped by the Russians.
Needless to say, Angeline would have done more than break down. She would have snapped. She would have gone into a complete nervous break down, with Butler and Juliet unaware of how to help her. Butler was left behind on the orders of Fowl Sr to protect his wife, since they reasoned Artemis II would be safe with him.
In this nervous break down, Angeline begins to hear voices, whispers in the dark that threaten to drag her down with them. But over time, she begins to understand what they're saying. They whisper of ancient battles, of fairy kings, of being buried deep below the ground for the sake of protecting their people.
Angeline has the old martello tower at the edge of the estate dug up, revealing the Berserker gate.
Her madness validated, Angeline throws herself into research of these magical beings, determined to find a way to get her husband and son back. Such research would no doubt send red flags to the LEP, who order Holly to go investigate. Angeline and Butler have several run ins with this strange creature over a series of months, until they're captured and Angeline is mesmerised into revealing her motivations. This is around the time the goblin gangs start using batteries for their guns, the humans and fairies making a deal for each others help.
By this point, Angeline has learned enough about fairy magic to start wielding it herself, becoming the foremost expert on rune magic, a largely abandoned form of magical research by the people since they favour the ritual.
So, when Opal and Briar decide to start a revolution, stopping Angeline from getting to her loved ones, she does more than just stop them. She uses her new power to burn Koboi laboratories to the ground (so obviously, her mental health is doing so well you guys).
Once they get Artemis original and Artemis delux version back, Angeline (and frankly the other two as well) takes a lot of time in therapy. Her husband and son are different now, closer, more emotive. But they're still the dastardly people she remembers. Angeline, however, is not the woman these two left behind. She's more wild, dangerous, cruel, and they worry about her.
The fairies would have happily had nothing else to do with Angeline, if not for the slight issue of the Demons of Limbo. Angeline hasn't told her family much of what happened to her since they were away and worried that they would think her mental health was getting worse. So she simply goes to investigate these issues with Juliet, saying she's visiting friends.
Upon meeting with Minerva, Angeline sees her less as an rival, but a potential student, negotiating to teach her all she knows of runes if they worked together. Billy Kong didn't exactly like this idea, since he wanted to kill all the demons starting with No1. So, when Angeline manages to escape with the Demon, Minerva is kidnapped and taken to Tapei 101
Artemis's one and TwofastTooFowl however are tailing her through all of this. Butler has refused to speak on the situation, but they know somethings off with Angeline. They follow her to Tapei and, once again, Artemis II gets Holly to take him, No1, Qwan, and the bomb out where they are lost to time.
The next few years are truly distressing for Angeline and Artemis Sr, to lose their son so fast after being reunited. This is made all the harder by soon after learning that Angeline was pregnant with the twins.
Of course, Artemis returns, and things go back to some kind of normal. Angeline teaches both her son and Minerva how to use runes, and they find they have a decent relationship with the fairies, helping where they can.
But then something happens with the berserker gate. Someone tries to open it. Turns out Opal didn't die in the fire and has been simply biding her time. Unbeknownst to her, however, Angeline had already found a way to let the spirits free, reasoning that she owed them that much for helping her find her family. Opal tries to berate the woman for this, but its pretty hard to argue with such a powerful sorceress when your head is encased in a magical block of ice.
(I genuinely only thought of this idea today, so let me know what you think)
I've been wanting to take part in Fowlfest but wouldn't dare to ; I feel like I don't really belong in the Fowldom but that's a me problem. So, I've been thinking about the AU prompt ! My most beloved AU is more of a canon-divergence, but I just love to imagine how things would have turned out had Artemis gotten his memories back by himself after TEC. I've written a whole ass fanfic about this though, and it's a bit off-topic so I won't expand on that ; still it's the first thing that came to mind. BUT ! To get to the point, one thing I've been wondering about a lot lately : what if, when Artemis and Holly (and the demons) came back from Hybras, they didn't arrive three years after they went missing, but three years before ? Just like. Imagine that. To avoid causing time paradoxes, Artemis and Holly would have to hide in seclusion for a few years to not runinto their younger selves ; the good thing is, if they manage to wait it out, they would be able to reappear in Taipei right after vanishing, so Butler and the Fowl family would at least be spared the anguish. But they'd still have to hang around for about three years in a timeline where they already exist, and try not to wreck the space-time continuum. Holly would definitely want to try to save Julius from Opal, which Artemis probably wouldn't allow her to do because it would absolutely break the timeline. What if they can't resist trying to fix the mistakes of the past ? What if they decide to go back to their lives even with their other selves still being there - how would that go ? Also, I said three years, but it could be more. They could return right before the Fowl Siege, or even earlier than that ; Artemis would have a very hard time deciding whether to try and not have his father be captured by the Mafiya. Alternatively they could even appear as far as like the seventies, but that's a completely different beast of an AU altogether. Lame crackfic telenovela plot-twist in that case : Artemis II ends up being Artemis I and the universe explodes. what the hell did my brain just suggest There's also the fact they are coming back from Hybras with demons ; can the demons just join the People ? Then the whole initial plot of TLC would be very different. I guess I like this idea because it could go many ways depending on the genre you want to explore. It can be a dystopian, lovecraftian horror thriller if the timeline starts unraveling ; or a funny, crazy time-travelling adventure with many shenanigans ; but also an intimist, philosophical tale about Artemis and Holly being stuck in and out of their world, forced to live like ghosts while another version of them lives their life and makes the same mistakes they did, having no friend to reach out to but each other. It can be sad, but also wholesome - them ending up admitting that what they went through all these years made them who they are, and even when given the chance they wouldn't change anything. I don't ship them but I like that it would be an opportunity to deepen and strengthen their bond whether platonically or romantically depending on your preference.
Anyhoo, that's where I'm at. Sorry it's a bit lame and probably been thought about before :(

Yes I've read that !! It's from KitsuneHeart right ? I've said in my first half-goblin Holly post that I was inspired by her :) I love her essay, I agree with all of her points. The People has a real racial bias problem (not to mention being a "pacifist" police-run society) and I feel like it should be addressed more.

so i've been rereading Artemis Fowl (series) again and even tho it was one of my favorite kids series I'm noticing some kinda weird or icky stuff that flew over my head before. Like damn if these books ain't just cyberpunk espionage magitek copaganda. Book 2 is literally about an ethnically motivated class uprising being put down by the police(who are framed as the good guys) because said racial minority/underclass is too violent and stupid to deserve better treatment in the prison system. and also too stupid and violent to have masterminded the plan for revolution themselves and needed one of the smart races to do it for them.
and any time there's a civilian presence in the book, they are depicted as either an antagonistic obstructive bureaucrat or a whiny caricature played for laughs. not totally sure if this is because these books were written while uncritically carrying over this kind of depiction that was historically the norm in its genres (police procedural), or if this is the author's own (conscious or subconscious) idealogical biases seeping in. might be both tbh.
anyway anyway the thing i actually wanted to bring up is that a really bizarre detail that stuck out to me during my re-reads is the way the different fairy races/species are characterized. there's 7(really 8) races/species of fairies who are disntint, and they have different traits and powers. So like there are elves who are good with magic, sprites who can fly, goblins (the aforementioned race that is too stupid and violent to be capable of organized protest) who can shoot fire etc.
Butt (foreshadowing lol) the one that was so weird to me is the characterization of gnomes, the last and arguably least of the fairy races in the artemis fowl series. they seem to make up the majority of the fairy population and a significant portion of background characters. bdon't get much screen time in the books because of not having any main characters who are one. They're sole defining characteristic?
Having enormous asses.
That's it. that's their whole thing. basically every time there's a gnome character depicted, the text goes out if it's way mention how dummy thicc the gnomes are and how their dumptruck rear ends take up too much room and keep blocking things and knocking shit over when they walk.
like there's also already a whole race of fairies (the dwarfs)whose whole thing is to be a never ending font of burglary escape techniques and fart jokes whenever the plot or author demand them. you would think having enormous asses would come in that territory, but no. it goes to the last group that we the audience don't really know or care about as much.
and i just don't really know what to make of that. that in coming up with fantasy races for his books, one of the most present but least prominent in tbe books' single defining and noteworthy character trait is having such fat asses that they block public pedestrian walkways (no really). i wish i knew what exactly the thought process behind (lol) that one was.
anyway hope i explained why it's so weird to me well, goodnight

Been experimenting with new brushes, now it looks much closer to my actual trad art style. Thatβs nice π
Smol Artemis and Juliet.
Did they truly understand each other ? Not really. Were they friends ? Not exactly. Did they spend an incredible amount of energy to piss each other off and pretend they hated to exist in the same place ? Definitely. But were they still there when comfort was needed ? Absolutely.
I need to build some type of skin π¦·
Hyperfixations collide once again o/ I donβt resonate with Auroraβs latest song as much as with Conflict of the Mind, but it still does make me think of Artemis - or at least of how I see Artemis. Iβve always felt like he used to be an hypersensitive, deeply empathic child, who was conditioned to think of emotions as weaknesses that absolutely must be concealed ; and who had to build himself an armor and become an adult so very soon. But even in the first book, every interaction he has with Angeline shows just how much he stills feels, even though he bottles everything up. And even though heβs a dork and can be very obtuse to how much he hurts people, Iβm persuaded that you canβt have the borderline supernatural power he has to predict each and every one of his opponents moves during his schemes, without some very strong ability to truly put himself in their shoes and understand their psyches. Sure, you Γ§an totally argue that he got there through study and logic, but I do like to think that he does have high emotional intelligence - he just doesnβt allow himself to use it a lot.
β¦ whaddya think ?
Anyhoo, I actually donβt like this piece very much, Iβm still struggling to find how I want my digital art style to look like, but oh well.
