When Pran said "You've got to stop doing this to me. We are not a thing" on the rooftop, I found the English translation a little confusing. The first sentence makes it sound like Pran is asking Pat to stop being clearly romantic with him because it's hurting him, but the second sentence makes it sound like he's telling Pat to stop being clearly romantic because it's not appropriate to the kind of relationship they have, without any romantic feelings on Pran's part. Can you shed any light on what exactly Pran was trying to communicate?
Oh certainly.
This was one of my favorite parts because they used super subtle language rather than the usual Thai words for couple (which I can't spell but can now recognize) or faen.
The first bit is Pran saying basically:
"I've had enough. Stop jerking me around, emotionally. You've been flirting on and off with me for years and it's not fair. Because i know what's going on and how I feel about you. And I kind of always have since the pond incident."
The second bit is:
"It's not fair of you, Pat, to do these kind of things to me (possession, jealousy, casual affection, flirting) without you, Pat, having actual romantic feels for me. (And acknowledging them.)"
Pran thinks Pat is being casual with him. But Pran is not a casual person. This is about sincerity.
I think Pran also thinks that Pat hasn't acknowledged his own feelings to himself yet. Remember, they have known each other a very long time. And Pran is a lot more self aware than Pat is (and he also knows that). I think he realizes that Pat is a little in love with him but Pran believes that Pat will never come to place where he can admit that to HIMSELF.
Thus the kiss is a real shocker to Pran, because he didn't think it would ever happen. And it's not that he thought Pat didn't have the guts, or wasn't action orientated, it's just that he didn't think Pat would ever have the level of self awareness required.
Pat grew up in the course of one episode, if I were Pran, I'd be surprised too.
----
As an IRL example, it's not quite the same thing but...
You ever have that friend who is clearly queer but just isn't yet?
So they aren't pretending, it's not even self delusion, because they just don't realize it. Sometimes it's family background, but sometimes it's just that they are too emotionally young. They haven't figured themselves out. How can they when they haven't had the right life experiences yet? They aren't to be blamed or pushed because of this. It's a void not a wound.
As friends (or sometimes family members) I think we often see queerness in the people we love before they see it in themselves. (Especially if we are a little older and already out.)
Because we, personally, aren't dealing with the guilt, shame, fear, loss, and rebuilding of identity that society's expectations place on our friend's way of thinking about themself. (Even if we've been through it, it's different for everyone, and we can easily forget because we want to.)
Even if the friendship group or family is accepting, it can be super hard. Because then there is a whole new set of expectations to come up against.
When analyzing Color Rush, I mentioned that no one really talks about how first love as a queer person is also a grieving process. (And anger: why must we grieve as we experience passion for the first time when the hets don't have to?)
Because as we open the closet door and walk into a queer identity we mourn the dead straight identity we left behind.
----
Which is a long way of saying, what we see on this rooftop with Pat & Pran is first love and new passion, but it is also grief.

Foundational Romance Trope: friends to love triangle
There were some who thought this BL slow, and I get that, but really it’s just subtle and quiet. With Light on Me, Korea gave us an honest to goodness high school set BL with some classic old school yaoi tropes almost like they were doing a bit of a,
“now that we’ve hit our stride, let’s perfect the vanilla sheet cake BL style.”
It was great, of course, but very refined and elegant which some found off putting. It made me think of something like this…
It’s what Korea does, repackage and perfect vanilla cake into this pretty glowing confection of precision joy. I’m cool with that. By all means, please include BL in the Hallyu take over. This is the K-pop of BL En-Hyphen style, manufactured super-powered cute but… restrained.
But that doesn’t make it any less gut wrenching to watch. In fact, it makes every subtle tentative movement of care that ShinWoo attempts that much more telling. It makes every fear of exposure that prevents DaOn from taking action that much more traumatic. It makes every moment of TaeKyung’s brutal honestly and blunt communication that much more powerful.
It’s like that intense moment of focus on the hand flex in an Austen adaptation - we are awaiting every crack in the sugar sculpture with bated breath.
The filming in this show was precision engineered. The frame was kept uncluttered, characters appeared exactly in the center, there was little visual noise, and the lighting was full on, even in night shots. To me this reflected the character of TaeKyung - honest and almost stilted in his mannerisms. I feel like the director filmed this series as if the show itself were TaeKyung: careful and clear and specific.
This may come off as one-note or simplistic to a casual viewer but it’s actually quite difficult to film something so precisely and still make it interesting to watch. It forced the viewer to focus almost entirely on the actor’s faces, their nuanced emotion, and their interpersonal relationships to the exclusion of all else. Lucky for us those actors served the lens beautifully.
There is literally NOTHING distracting about this directing style. It’s like the camera was a neutral white room, a well-lit gallery in which the narrative hung suspended for us all to stand and stare at in hushed silence.
A love triangle has never before looked so perfect or been executed so perfectly, and it never will again. All BL love triangles that come after Light On Me (and we will get them now) are going to be unfavorably compared to this show.
When I posted about Korea’s history with BL, I talked about how strategic and clever they are with tropes. Light on Me is a master class in how to use tropes to manipulate audience sympathy so they can’t decide which pair they prefer. Korean BL never just throws in a trope without purpose - they calculate its impact on story structure. Basically, LoM used this technique to infect fans with Second Lead Syndrome. It’s SO GOOD.
So yes, Light on Me was cleverly engineered, but it was also SPECIAL, and here’s why:
This show gave us a small cast of beautifully acted complex and sympathetic characters and dwelled on their different motivations, communication styles, and narrative roles. It gently explored not what it means to love, or even be in love, but what it means to act on love, and what that says about integrity and emotional courage. In doing so, it managed to treat its characters with integrity too. And not just the three main characters but the mentor, the faen fatal, and the best friend support characters too.
This show felt very fair. Fair to its characters. Fair to its story. And fair to us, the watchers.
For me this BL was classy, a real winner, not the least of which because they NAILED the landing, including the final kiss. Korea is DOMINATING 2021. Like seriously. What’s going on here?
Full analysis of the love triangle trope under the context of the second half fo this BL here.
Bravo, Korea.

It's really hard to believe we now have korean dramas that doesn't focus on the romance, where you can ignore the romance if you wish and that the romance doesn't overwhelm the actual plot. For years I didn't have any interest in kdrama because it was always about "guy meets girl", if you see a guy standing next to a girl you already know where this is going, everybody is always falling in love all the time. Even when there was a good plot, it moved tangled in the romance, and it was really hard to watch if you are romance repulsed, don't like romance or are just really really tired of ships and couples. This is unprecedented.
SEMANTIC ERROR | EPISODE 8
I’ll make another request. Sangwoo, let’s date. Not a trial run. I mean the real thing.
Let’s talk about Saint Suppapong’s physicality in acting for a moment. Watch Love By Chance back to back with Why R U? It’s kind of a revelation.
There are some really good actors in BL and he is one of them.
But when most viewers say “great actor” they’re thinking about facial expressions and how an actor portrays emotions.
What Saint has (and very few other actors anywhere do) is whole body physicality. The way he moves it totally different between Pete and Tutor.
When he walks: where he weights his spine, carries his arms and shoulders, and how he tilts his head is different. Tutor has faster more abrupt movements, Pete’s are more precise and careful.
When he’s standing, also different.
It’s actually kind of insane.
Saint inhabits his own body completely differently depending on the character he’s playing. It’s just really rare to see someone do this. It’s like spy-craft.
I’d love to see him tackle a seme character or a bad guy. I bet he’d be great more aggressive and agro.
It’d be fun to see how he inhabits space when he is required to take up a lot of it.
I think Plan has some of this ability too. Look at him in his Until We Meet Again bit part (aggressive, older seeming, stiff) versus Love By Chance (floppy, childish, and uncontrolled).
But with Plan we haven’t yet got to see him execute this as two different main characters where he has to maintain alternate physicality over time. Although it explains why he’s so great at imitating Tin’s posture and walk in LBC2. (One of my very favourite scenes.)
Have you not had a secret crush on anyone before?
Eyyy ep 1 is here....!
The series had me at the bl version of Romeo and Juliet...(obviously without the tragic ending)
