10 Questions

10 Questions

Thanks so much for tagging me, @authorisada! I've been gaining a lot of new followers lately (yay!), so this is a good moment to talk some more about my WIP ^^. 1. Tell me something you love about your current WIP(s). I enjoy the sense of discovery I feel when writing this story. It had been a while since I had written any fantasy, and only now I notice how much I have missed it. The adventure, the magic, the feeling that everything is possible... Plus I really love the 1800's, so doing all kind of research on that period is very inspiring.

2. Three of your characters are coming with you on a road trip. Who are they and why did you pick them? If I'm picking characters from Elementary, I'd choose Bismuth, Zinc and Mercury. Bismuth is a general sweetheart ánd very responsible, so he would take great care of us travelers. Zinc is an explorer from his toes to his fingertips. He would somehow feel exactly which road to take to find the prettiest and most lonesome places. And Mercury is just the kind of guy you need when you are lying on a car in the middle of the night, having eaten nothing but old sandwiches, looking at the stars, thinking about life.

3. How do you name your characters? I either spend four weeks scrolling through every single page of behindthename.com without ever finding the right name and settling for the one I started with, or I know the name of my character immidiatly and without doubt. There's no in between.

4. Which relationship do you write more of—romantic or platonic? Platonic. You can prey the misfits-to-family-trope from my cold, dead hands.

5. Has your main character(s) gone through any major changes through the course of your WIP? I think Tungsten has become a lot stronger and more secure. Though he is and always will be introverted and shy, I think he and I both discovered with quite a bit of surprise that he has a core made of iron.

6. Which tropes, if you’re aware of any, are in your WIP? Well, there is the misfits-to-family trope that I mentioned earlier. There is also a pretty and dangerous women (more than one, actually), a main character with extraordinairy strong magic (though he seldomly uses it) and probably some real bad romance cliches (because I can't write love but I also feel the need to write gay stuff). And I'm sure there are a thousend more, but I'm trying.

7. Favorite hero from any book/movie/etc.? That's impossible! I've always loved Maggie, from Heart of Inkt, and Liesel (and Rudy, and Max, and I just really love this book) from The Bookthief. Cormoran Strike from The Cormoran Strike mysteries is also lovely.

8. Favorite villain from any book/movie/etc.? Littlefinger from Game of Thrones is an absolutely horrifying and genius bad guy.

9. What’s your favorite part of the writing process? Editing, honestly. I love going over my work seventeen times, changes sentences over and over till they sound just right.

10. What makes your story different and compelling for readers? The characters, I think. I try to bring interesting, lovable characters with good intentions and many flaws. A friend once told me she could feel how much I cared in anything I wrote, and because of that, my work always felt warm. I thought that was very sweet and exactly what I am aiming for. I believe in mankind, as fucked up as it might be, and I hope I can make people fall in love with living and with humans just a little bit.

I don’t know who to tag, but the questions are great, so just fill them in if you feel like it!

Exploring rural forests

- Bring a flashlight. Bring an extra battery. Bring another battery. Bring your headphones. Do not bring a camera.

- Set out after rain. It cleans the air.

- If a tree falls in your peripheral, it's a warning. Be careful, you only get one.

- If a tree falls right in front of you, something is out to kill you, and something wants to protect you.

- Those hooves you hear? Don't go looking, it's not a deer.

- You might get the urge to take your shoes off. Allow yourself to give in, if you are feeling reckless. However, no matter how familiar the ground seems, don't let it touch your ankles. Make sure you remember your name. Not all trees are born from seeds.

- The man with the dog does have eyes. He just shares them.

- If you come across a field with cows, check the height of the grass. Does it grow above your knees? Make haste. Do not dwell on the question what the cows have eaten instead.

- You might hear your own steps echoed in the bushes. Looking will not help you. There is nothing there to see.

- It's not thunder, it's moaning. You are lucky their pain is keeping them occupied.

- If you visit the abandoned house, don't close the door behind you.

- You can rest on a fallen trunk, but do not eat. You can lay your bag on a picknick bench, but remain standing.

- The carved signs are not meant for you.

- Horses do not step in puddles for they fear they will break a leg. Horses do not step in puddles for they fear they will be dragged under.

- The shadow is not that big, it's just closer than you think.

- The rolling fields look wonderful. Don't stay for the sunset.

My whole WIP is about this! Set during the idustrial revolution, magic has become a tool, something to be used or maybe even ignored, forgotten and discarded. But then the Romantics rise and magic gets an impulse. It is intertwined with art: art as a spiritual power, something connected to feeling and expression and just a little out of reach, always at the edge of incomprehensible. My OC thinks about it like this: ‘Once, when religion had still been tangible and water could change in wine in front of your eyes, magic had been spiritual, an amazing, supernatural power. Later, miracles became stories. Churches rose, priests preached their psalms and every spire pulled mankind further from her faith. Magic was sacrilege, then utensil. Now philosophers and scientists held truth in their fingers, and magic, God and the occult should all be sweeped into a dark corner. Tungsten did not believe in God – at least, he didn't think he did. But magic was different. It was human and more than human, like love, or art‘.

I have always felt art is the closest we can get to magic!

I have a lot of feelings about how witchcraft and art are similar and intertwined, but I can’t exactly articulate them

Tungsten basically lives in his tophat (actually, his pet Milton lives in his tophat, but you get my drift).

Phosphore is stunningly beautiful and enjoys wearing long, classy dresses in striking colours, like deep purple or yellow.

Zinc is always bruised and scraped, like he had a fight with a straycat or fell down a hill. Both are actual possible explanations.

Antimony has a long, velvet coat in dark blue, embroied with gold-tread stars.

Adam might be the most uitstanding (at least from a nowadays perspective). Like all the others, he lives in 1800 and dresses in this fashion. His jackets are mostly lightly coloured, in pink or baby blue, and his vests are often embroied with flowers. He wears matching gloves and walks with a limp and a cane (with a beautiful, silver grip, of course).

do any of y’alls oc’s have interesting physical feature/outfits? i want to hear!!

and also maybe draw them if i have the energy

Hey, this is probably a bit late, but I saw you commented on an ask that I sent in. (To a different blog) So... about writing cis/straight characters? I really don't know. I'm not lying... I've never made a good straight/cis character they all suck, cliche stupid and aaa (NOT CALLING CIS/STRAIGHT PEOPLE ANY OF THOSE) Help?

Hey, friend. Don’t worry - writing means getting into characters that are different from you and for accurate portrayel, asking is the best course! I think a good way to write a straight/cis character, is to consider what you like about your queer characters. Surely, there is a lot more to them than their sexuality or gender. They have backgrounds, goals, dreams and fears,  family and hobbies and favorite music. Their sexuality/gender might be a part of them, but it’s definitly not all of them. If you want to make up a straight/cis character, do not focus on straight/cis. Just make a character. Did they grow up in a farm? Where they popular in high school? What was their dreamjob when they were six? Do they like vintage clothing? Do they understand social media and have they ever bought  merchandise? Do they have any big regrets? What happened to them, that you are writting this story in the first place? Did they get in prison? Or out of it? There are so many things that make a character interesting or relatable, and sexuality and gender are only a small part of that. I have some more ideas about this, but I am not sure how to word them at the moment. If you are interested or have any questions, feel free to message me (I suppose I am not straight, by the way, but I am cis).

Just a reminder that I still make OC moodboards! Just tell me about your characters and I will create something (hopefully) aesthetic for them :)

If you are still interested in ass-kicking warrior ladies, I two in the historical fantasy I'm writing! The first one is Tin. She feels strongly about justice, equality and respect and is always picking fights to protect these values (she has quite a temper). She can throw a punch, but she prefers dueling; her gun Charley is part of her arm at this point. She likes wearing male clothing, though because she is small and curvy, it seldom fits. Luckily she has a friend that helps her adjust it. 1/2

My other warrior lady is called Phosphore. Phosphore’s fighting is more subtle than Tin’s, but definitely as dangerous. She is very smart and prefers using logic and reason to win a fight. Yet, there is always a dagger in her pocket. She is a dancer and with her quickness and agility, she can have her blade to your throat in a matter of heartbeats. The elaborate dresses she wears don’t hinder her. Though she won’t harm without good reason, you are in trouble if you touch her friends. (2/2)

I am always interested in ass-kicking warrior ladies!  And yours sound awesome! Fighting for justice? Being badass? Using wit but also weapons? And being fashionable about it?

I love them! 100/10! Don’t mess with them! But I do want to be their friend! Also Phosphore is an awesome name!

everywriterneedsfanart - Art imitates art
Art imitates art

This blog will combine three things I love dearly: writing, talking about writing, and aesthetics. So if you have an amazing OC for which you crave an aesthetic moodboard or Instagram page - tell me all about them, and I will make you one! After all, every writer needs fanart.
