I used to hate this tip, too, but then I realised that maybe we should not take it that literally. If you are Britsh, you might not know much about the highschool-system in America, but you probably know some things about friendship. You know how a first love feels and you know how hard it can be to share a school with people who have bullied you for years. Or maybe you don’t know that, either. But you sure know what humiliation feels like. We have not attended executions, but we have seen scared people and we know suspense.
‘Write about what you know‘ does not have to be about facts. It can be about feelings, about insights and moments of understanding. You can make your readers believe the most fantastic things and experience the most amazing events, because you can base the sensation of casting a spell on the electricity you felt when you touched an escalator in the shopping mall.
Maybe all this dogma means, is that you don’t have to make everything up. One of the truest thing I ever knew, is that I feel safe as long as I am the only one in danger. That does not mean I have to write about a college girl with insecurity issues. I can write about a Chosen One in the middle ages. But he will feel real, because I wrote him based on something I know
You know what it would be like if we all only wrote about what we know?
BORING AS SHIT.
You’re British and want to write a highschool AU set in America? Sorry, you can’t, even if you research you might get it wrong. You’re an artist and you want to write about geologists? Nope. Not for you. You’re writing a zombie apocalypse AU? Not if you haven’t lived through a zombie apocalypse. You’re writing a space AU? You better be an astronaut (even if you’re an engineer or technician you might get something wrong about spacewalking!!!). You’re writing meta about elf biology? You’d better be a fucking biologist or you might get something wrong.
So do some research online and write your AU. If someone who knows more about that thing offers to help you, great! If they don’t, you can do it anyway. You don’t need a Stamp Of Approval™ in order to write your stuff.
And if someone is rude about it because it doesn’t fit their standards? Oh well, too bad for them.
Thanks for the invitation to ramble! Come drop by on my blog/in my inbox anytime, I’d love to hear about your projects. I’m writing a historical fantasy, set in England around 1800. It’s about a band of traveling artists/magicians, each of them having left their homes and joined the group for their own reasons. I follow a couple of them throughout the story as they slowely split up because 1) Tin, a girl with a gun named Charley and the temper of a wargod, gets someone in prison per accident and goes on to attemp jailbreak 2) Silver, a lad pretending to be arrogant, leaves after a extensive misunderstanding and is taken in by a guy he is totally not falling in love with (spoiler: romance is the least of his problems) 3) Copper (sort of an asshole, but Silvers best friend) and Phosphore (she’s a godess, I don’t even know) go to find Silver but find quite something else and 4) Tungsten, the newest member of the group, tries really hard to understand himself, the world, and just to not fuck this up (spoiler: someone else fuck it up for him) I use this story to work with very different and diverse characters and I get to do a lot of historical research, so I really feel like I’m out playing and exploring!
I’m realizing as I see other writeblrs talk about their characters that I really don’t know what most of you are writing. (Or I did at one point and it’s hard to keep straight.) I’d love to become more familiar with your projects! I’m unfortunately an anxious introvert who’s too afraid to initiate conversations and I’m pretty sure the times I’m on Tumblr aren’t when anyone else is so I miss a lot of posts.
So I’m wondering if I could get all you writers to reblog this post and ramble about your characters? Or link me to a bio page for them if you have one? Or a page about your stories in general if you have that? If you want to, of course!
Please help out a curious person who stinks at talking to people. Even if we haven’t talked, I would love to hear your ramblings! 💚
Reread your old writing, especially those scenes you’re most proud of
Write something silly. It doesn’t need to be logical, consistent or included in your story. Write something dumb
Compare your old writing to your new writing. Seeing how much you’ve improved can be very motivating
Explore different storylines, those type of storylines that would never make it into your story, but you’d still like to play around with. Create AUs!
Choose one of your least favorite scenes and rewrite it
Act out your scenes
Read old comments from people praising your work
Create a playlist that reminds you of your wip
Team up with a friend, write AUs for each other's characters
Create playlists for your characters
Draw your ocs/make memes of your ocs
Draw/make memes of your friend's ocs
Don’t push yourself to get back into writing the thing that made you stop writing in the first place, try writing something else!
Write what you wanna write, no matter how cliché it might be. If you want to write it, write it
Take a break, focus on another hobby of yours. Consume other pieces of media, take a walk to clear your head
You don’t have to write in chronological order if it isn’t working for you! Sometimes a scene you aren’t interested in writing can become interesting after you’ve explored other scenes in the story
Read bad reviews of books or TV-shows. You’ll unlock appreciation and motivation for your own writing
Create a new storyline, or a new character! Anything that helps bring something fresh into your story. Could even be a completely new wip!
Not writing every day doesn’t make you a bad writer. Take a break if you feel like you need one
Remind yourself to have fun. Start writing and don’t focus all your attention on following “the rules.” You can get into the nitty-gritty when you’ve familiarized yourself with writing as an art. Or don’t. It’s fiction, you make your own rules
Go to sleep, or take a nap. Sleep deprivation and writing does not go hand in hand
Listen to music that reminds you of your characters/wip
Remember why you started. Know that you deserve to tell the story you want to tell regardless of the skill you possess
A moodboard for ‘Moe‘ by @whatdoyoumeantheresonly3episodes. I hope this fits the character you have in mind! Requests for OC aesthetics are open
Tag Game Rules: Tag 10 people you would like to learn more about!
I was tagged by @andtheotherstars, thanks so much!
Age: 19
Birthplace: A tiny town in the Netherlands
Current Time: 11:26
Drink you last had: A cup of tea. At this point, I think I'm 90% tea.
Favorite Song: I can hardly choose one since it changes all the time, but Saturn by Sleeping at Last and Starman by David Bowie must be two favorites.
Grossest Memory: Probably a friend throwing up in the bed we were sharing, while we were in it.
Horror, Yes or No: Hell no. I'm really no good with ghosts and all that stuff. Gore is okay, but not much fun.
In Love: Nope. And honestly never have been.
Jealous of People: Quite often, but I try not to let it show.
Love at first sight? Or should I walk by again?: I believe people can fall for each other at first sight, but to me, you can hardly call that 'love'. I think love needs a little more time.
Middle Name: Maria
Number of Siblings: Two brothers; a younger and an older one.
One Wish: To know what I want to do with my future.
Question you’re always asked: You are studying arts and culture? What are you going to dó with that?
Reasons to Smile: Oh, lots! I got an extra day off today. I spent last night with my family and thinking back of that is nice. I am going to stay over at a friend's the upcoming weekend and we'll be going to a LGTBQ+ party (which I've never done before). I got concerts and a musical and a trip planned for the upcoming months. My first draft is going well. My cat just came in and is now sleeping in my lap.
Song that I last sang: Well, we are celebrating Carnaval over here, so it's a horrible Dutch song I belted out surrounded my happy drunk people.
Time I woke up: Eight o'clock.
Underwear Colour: Blue. Quality information.
Vacation Destination: I'll be visiting Copenhagen in a few months, and I got two vacations yet to plan! (Wow, it sounds like I'm quite a traveler when said like this).
Worst Habit: Procastinating, I think. And hypocrisy (like, I'll give all my friends tons of advise and tell them to take care of themselves, and here I am, a goblin, eating nothing but an apple till five in the afternoon).
Favorite Food: Homemade soup and pancakes!
Zodiac Sign: Cancer
I'm tagging @teacups-and-tealeaves, @writinginthetwilight, @andtheotherwriter and @merigreenleaf. Don’t do it if you don’t feel like it!
Title Game Both the lovely @knightedwriter and @panticwritten tagged my to scroll through my WIP at random and use the sentences I land on as titles. Thanks so much! I’m using Elementary: 1. If I’m being honest, I could use some of these ;). I’m not tagging anyone because I don’t know that many people here and I don’t want to spam you all, but if anyone feels like doing this (come on, it’s funny), consider yourself tagged!
If you had a hippopotamus that could breathe fire and fly what would you name it??

So this is not writing-related, but I’d love it if some of you could help me out! I am considering studying in Dundee, but I have no idea what the place is like. Has any of you ever been to Dundee? Care to tell me something about it? I’d love you forever for reblogging this message and helping me gather some information!
Me [falling off the stairs in public]: performance art
For the engineer, Lydia Preston, by @lethalblizzard. I hope you like it! Requests for OC aesthetics are open.
This blog will combine three things I love dearly: writing, talking about writing, and aesthetics. So if you have an amazing OC for which you crave an aesthetic moodboard or Instagram page - tell me all about them, and I will make you one! After all, every writer needs fanart.
