Autism Acceptance Month: Autistic Headcanons
↳ Lydia Deetz (Beetlejuice)
“Well, I read through that Handbook for the Recently Deceased. It says live people ignore the strange and unusual. I myself am strange and unusual.”
yes
One thing that I really don’t love about the online autism community is the way that some people in it like to push back against stereotypes by insisting that no autistic people actually fit these stereotypes ever, period, end of. I see things like “being in IT”, “liking geeky stuff” and stimming in more stigmatized ways (ie. rocking and hand flapping) harped on a lot.
As an autistic programmer who stims by rocking when particularly overwhelmed and enjoys stereotypically geeky things, this is incredibly othering.
“Stereotypical” autistic people aren’t the problem: NTs making broad assumptions about all autistic people are.
