we're pretty certain that they were still being headcanoned as transmasc as well as transfem back when the first book with them in it came out in 1904 but we have no proof of that. also they're dating the other protagonist and lie about their age to impress people and are canonically trans but can still be headcanoned either way without breaking canon at all. you just don't get them like that anymore

Pretty sure Ozma is first introduced living as a boy (called Tip maybe?), seeming pretty content that way, but then turns out Ozma was turned into a boy to hide Ozma's real identity, but then also Ozma turned back into a girl and is sort of. both? This isn't a very good description it's been a long time since I read the books but Ozma has trans masc and trans fem vibes

Masked killer with a flamethrower. Are they a boy? a girl? an alien? who knows!

Their gender is intentionally hidden from the audience but the fandom tends to agree that Pyro is super queer either way X3
