a word of advice for my writer buddies that took me way too long to realize – your story doesn’t have grand to be great. Your dystopia doesn’t have to end with your protagonists changing the world, making it a great place. Your fantasy doesn’t have to end with your protagonist overthrowing the malevolent ruler. You don’t have to worry and fret over your plot not being too complicated, too large, too exciting. Sometimes less is more! If your character doesn’t end up saving the day for the rest of the world, that’s okay. They don’t need to. Succeeding in their own goal is just as good. You don’t need long, overarching plots that effect your entire universe in order to make a great story. You just need your passion and motivation- you just need to write

Writing fan fiction online and writing essays for school really messed up how I view paragraphs.
For fan fiction, I didn’t write for mobile, I wrote for web browsers, which are really really wide (unless you read on mobile but I always read on my desktop). In order for paragraphs to look like decent sized paragraphs (and I wanted them to, to look more like a “real” writer’s work) the paragraphs had to have a ton of lines and lots of prose and description which I struggle with A LOT.
(For example, these look like pretty short paragraphs but do you see how long they are?)
For school essays, I was often required to write thousands of words— in five paragraphs. This, as you may have already guessed, resulted in absolutely atrociously huge paragraphs that my brain still recognizes as the proper size paragraph.
WHICH IT MOST DEFINITELY IS NOT.
These are four random books I chose (In order, left to right, top to bottom: Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter, Lunar Chronicles, Star Wars). The longest paragraph is in the Harry Potter one and it is 100% just the first paragraph that introduces the setting.
I tried changing my google doc from it’s original, default, printer page size (8.5 x 11 inches) to one of the standard-ish sizes of paperbacks I found online (5.5 x 8.5 inches). It made a very noticeable difference.
If anybody wants to try this, go to file → page setup to change any settings you want.
Filling up an entire printer page sometimes feels like pulling teeth and I think for those of us who struggle with this, something as simple as changing the way we see our writing and the way we write could really make a difference. Hell, even for editing. I’ve heard people say sometimes that changing the font makes a huge difference and makes it easier to spot mistakes so I’m sure this could work in much the same way.
Ok, I know some people are complaining about this season, and while there were some things I would’ve changed, IT WAS SOOOOO GOOD!!
From the trailers I originally thought I was gonna hate Tadano, but I actually really liked him? Like, he was such a chill dude and even when Retsuko broke things off, he was respectful. He had a lot of layers to him, and wasn’t the cliche, one-dimensional dude bro I thought he was gonna be. However, I am glad that he and Retsuko broke up, not only because obvious ship, but particularly when it was obvious he and Retsuko were not on the same page about marraige and having a family. But even then, I still really liked him as a character! •w•
Speaking of Haida, I was sort of disappointed with how little of a role he played this season. He wasn’t completely reduced to the side, but I would’ve liked more scenes with him (and Retsuko skkfsk).
Ooohhh, but I ADORED what this season added to Kabae’s character! I went from finding her agonizingly annoying in season 1 to being one of my favorite characters in the whole series. They way she helped Anai and played with her kids as well as the story with her husband was so adorable! I loved how they took a sort of irrelevant character from the first season and added on to her. Amazing stuff!
The message of the whole season, however, is what I think was the best part, at least for me. Even though Retsuko and Tadano were great for each other personality wise, their morals just didn’t match up, and that’s ok. You shouldn’t force yourself to match up with your partner’s expectations. The point of a relationship is to be happy together, and if you can’t meet halfway, things might not work out, and that’s not a bad thing. I really think that moral should be incorporated into more shows.
I have plenty more opinions that I have on this season, but to just sum it all up, I really really enjoyed it, and I really really hope there’s a season 3!!
