Rose Lalonde, Age 8: What Did She Mean By This. What Mind Games Is She Playing

A drawing of a young Rose Lalonde standing to the left of and behind her mother, who is washing dishes. Rose looks up at her with a manner of contempt known only to 8-year-old Rose Lalonde. She has a shirt with a clubs symbol and her hair is in braids. White text reads "Your mother is sober. Moments like these are rare, better take the opportunity to engage her in conversation. Something's been nagging you."
A zoom-in on Rose. Her face is now rendered "more symbolically", AKA with more detail. Purple text above her reads "Mother."
Rose's mother is silent and continues to scrub at the singular dish she's holding. The suds are getting a little out of control. Rose continues to look up at her, but now she's drawn in such a way that it looks like she's trying to explode her mother with her mind. She is also drawn in significantly less detail.
Rose's mother from the back. Her hair has been straightened so that only one uniform curl(?) remains in the back like those 60s housewives had. A conversation which follows finally begins, again started by Rose: "Mother." "You need to speak up rosie you know I dont like it when you mumble" "I'm not mumbling. You just have the faucet running too loudly." "Hmm okay rosie you know I'm just being silly w you!" "Maybe I want to have a serious conversation. I should think any silliness would be rendered unwelcome." "okay what will we be discussing so seeeeriously?" The other set of text is dark pink.
Rose's face is cast in a purple light. Purple text reads "Mother, why don't I have a father?"
A pink eye is shown up-close. Purple text continues to read, "I have my theories of course. I'm not naive. Am I the unfortunate result of an affair that you kept out of pity? Did he leave before I grew old enough to remember him? Or did he suffer some cruel fate and leave the mortal realm before I could enter it kicking and screaming?" The word naive is underlined.
Rose's mom turns around to face her daughter. Bubbles almost begin to overflow in the sink. She says, "Oh" "Is that all this is about?" Only the top of Rose's head can be seen, where one of those angry vein-symbols appears comically over her hair.
A zoom in on the face of Rose's mom, and her head tilts. She says, "Rosie, you're adopted." She's smiling blankly.
Rose is now no longer cast in purple, but black and white. She squints up at her mother. Next to her are three small dots.
Rose looks down and to the side. Her brows furrow. She doesn't understand.
White text over a final drawing of Rose reads "Your mother really is a master of psychological manipulation. That one has you stumped."

Tape cassette recorders are compatible with literally every. Single. Thing. I'm out here living in 2095.
Things you can record (audio only), simply by lying to your computer, telling it that the tape recorder is actually a set of headphones:

<List begins> Discord call, podcast, documentary, radio and internet radio, music from any source without having to download it all, music you make on virtual pianos/etc, noteworthy news items (fireside esque, interviews, huge events), stand-up comedy, rented or borrowed media, any other sound your pc can produce <list ends>

And with a VCR you could do all of this and have the visuals as well... but an audio cassette recorder is a good place to start, since they're small and simple. I would not recommend a boombox, because those are large and nowadays all very, very bad quality.

Now, you may be saying "how is any of this helpful, I want a digital file..." here's the fucking magic. You go into Audacity (free program), and lie to it that the tape recorder is really a microphone. Then you hit record on Audacity, and hit play on the tape, and let it play at regular speed. Trim and export the digital file, and you're doing gangbusters. You're cooking with gas. You're thinking with portals. You've won the internet.

Congratulations, you can now "pirate"* anything you want, and literally no one can catch you, because you're not downloading in the traditional sense. You're streaming to an external device, and that device is recording what it receives. It's exactly like taping a live TV show to a VHS. This is a very low-key and non-strenuous task for the computer, since your tape recorder does all the work.

*Is this piracy? No. Well- it's time-shifting <link embedded>. Sort of. Tell it to my Steely-Dan albums. Tell it to my The Sims: Hot Date VG Soundtrack album.

I was getting pretty fed up with links and generators with very general and overused weapons and superpowers and what have you for characters so:

Here is a page for premodern weapons, broken down into a ton of subcategories, with the weapon’s region of origin.

Here is a page of medieval weapons.

Here is a page of just about every conceived superpower.

Here is a page for legendary creatures and their regions of origin.

Here are some gemstones.

Here is a bunch of Greek legends, including monsters, gods, nymphs, heroes, and so on.

Here is a website with a ton of (legally attained, don’t worry) information about the black market.

Here is a website with information about forensic science and cases of death. Discretion advised.

Here is every religion in the world.

Here is every language in the world.

Here are methods of torture. Discretion advised.

Here are descriptions of the various methods used for the death penalty. Discretion advised.

Here are poisonous plants.

Here are plants in general.

Feel free to add more to this!

you guys know you can get USB connectable CD, dvd, and blu-ray players right. and you can buy external hard drives with crazy amounts of space for an amount of money that would make the average person from 2009’s head explode bc of how cheap it is. and if you do this and get ripping software such as handbrake for CDs and DVDs and makeMKV for blurays you can both own a physical copy of whatever media you want and make it accessible to yourself no matter where you are. do you guys know this

Ok but like. What the fuck is there to do on the internet anymore?

Idk when I was younger, you could just go and go and find exciting new websites full of whatever cool things you wanted to explore. An overabundance of ways to occupy your time online.

Now, it’s just… Social media. That’s it. Social media and news sites. And I’m tired of social media and I’m tired of the news.

Am I just like completely inept at finding new things or has the internet just fallen apart that much with the problems of SEO and web 3.0 turning everything into a same-site prison?

Something I try to keep in mind when making art that looks vintage is keeping a limited color pallette. Digital art gives you a very wide, Crisp scope of colors, whereas traditional art-- especially older traditional art-- had a very limited and sometimes dulled use of color.

This is a modern riso ink swatch, but still you find a similar and limited selection of colors to mix with. (Mixing digitally as to emulate the layering of ink riso would be coloring on Multiply, and layering on top of eachother 👉)

If you find some old prints, take a closer look and see if you can tell what colors they used and which ones they layered... a lot of the time you'll find yellow as a base!

Misprints can really reveal what colors were used and where, I love misprints...

Something else I keep in the back of my mind is: how the human eye perceives color on paper vs. a screen. Ink and paint soaks into paper, it bleeds, stains, fades over time, smears, ect... the history of a piece can show in physical wear. What kind of history do you want to emulate? Misprinted? Stained? Kept as clean as possible, but unable to escape the bluing damages of the sun? It's one of my favorite things about making vintage art. Making it imperfect!

Something I Try To Keep In Mind When Making Art That Looks Vintage Is Keeping A Limited Color Pallette.

You can see the bleed, the wobble of the lines on the rug, the fading, the dirt... beautiful!!

Thinking in terms of traditional-method art while drawing digital can help open avenues to achieving that genuine, vintage look!
