COYOTE UGLY 2000, dir. David McNally
sorry boss can't come in today i was on my way to work and then a gentle spring breeze kissed my cheek and reminded me it is a serious thing just to be alive on this fresh morning in this broken world
‘we’ve been fucking with no strings attached but i just saw you go upstairs with another guy and im drunk and following you both upstairs to punch the shit out of him’
. 。:゜★。 hey, is that radcliff's very own FRESH FACE ? yup, i'd recognize ANGEL LOZANOS’ face anywhere. if you twisted my arm and asked me to describe them, i’d say they’re incredibly FERVENT, NIHILISTIC, RELIABLE, and RESENTFUL, and they always seem to be carrying around a SECOND-HAND WALKMAN COVERED IN STICKERS for some reason. kind of weird, right ? when they hit play on their walkman, you just know it’s CHANGES by DAVID BOWIE tickling their eardrums ——— a creature of habit, maybe ? they have the same peculiar energy as CONFESSING THEIR LOVE ON MIRROR MESSAGES, SHARPIE PAINTED NAILS STRUMMING ON A BASS, GOING ON A RADTRIP AND REFUSING TO LOOK AT A MAP BECAUSE THEY KNOW WHERE THEY'RE GOING, & BREAKING THE SPINE OF A BRAND NEW BOOK and work at scratch that with all the other losers. shit ! that’s them … i guess they’re about to clock in for their dreadfully long shift. well, good luck to ‘em.

𝑰𝑻 𝑨𝑳𝑳 𝑺𝑻𝑨𝑹𝑻𝑺 summer 1958, when a doe-eyed girl in a summer dress meets a boy two years her senior at a rock show. freshly graduated at the top of her class and a month away from going to her dream school, surely she's too smart to fall for a guy in a band --– no matter how many love songs he throws her way. they meet up after the show, she takes him to the best places in town and he tells her stories about his life on the road. they laugh harder than they have in years. he tells her she’s pretty and she thinks he’s being ridiculous. when they kiss, it feels like magic, the kind people spend their entire lives trying to put into songs. when he asks her to run away, she says yes.
𝑺𝑰𝑿 𝑴𝑶𝑵𝑻𝑯𝑺 into the honeymoon phase, she’s staring at a pregnancy test in the bathroom of a denny’s. she cries in front of the broken mirror because, although she’d always dreamed of being a mother, this was the wrong time with the wrong guy. come february 1959 she’s holding an 𝑨𝑵𝑮𝑬𝑳 in her arms. the baby is welcomed into a world of rock n’ roll, his father is too busy chasing a dream to properly care for his family, he tells her to be patient because “ everything will be worth it once he gets his big break. ” they bounce between cheap motel rooms and an old volkswagen van, every night he comes home drunk or high or mixture of both. it shouldn’t have been a surprise when she packed up her bag and left him with a baby and a note.
𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑺𝑯𝑶𝑾 𝑴𝑼𝑺𝑻 𝑮𝑶 𝑶𝑵 ! the musician continues to chase his dream, often pawning his son off to a roadie or the teenage girl working the merch table. the kid grows up in bars and small venues, he learns how to strum a guitar before he can read, “ there’s nothing any school can teach you that you can’t learn on the road, kid. ” when he turns seven he asks if he has a mom, his father ignores it, waves him off and finishes what’s left of his beer. when angel asks again the lie comes naturally, “ she’s dead. complications during childbirth, you know ? ” it stings but he doesn’t understand why, is it possible to miss something you never had ? at eleven he starts earning his keep, he helps the band set up for shows and tunes their strings for a few extra bucks. the money he earns is spent on books, ones he reads on the side stage as his father plays until his fingers start to bleed. the band does well enough to gather a following but not well enough to pay the bills. the promises never stop coming, “ move to los angeles and you’ll get signed ! ” said one producer, “ go to seattle and we’ll submit your demo, ” said the manager. his life turns into a string of ‘almost’, the life he’d been taught to want always at his fingertips but never within reach.
𝑻𝑬𝑵 𝒀𝑬𝑨𝑹𝑺 𝑮𝑶 𝑩𝒀, angel is now twenty-three and his patience is wearing thin. now a man with hopes and dreams of his own, the power struggle begins. they fight almost nightly, mostly over money and on the bad nights where neither of them can hold their liquor angel calls him a piece of shit father. he retaliates by blaming him for his failures because if he didn’t have a kid to take care of he’d be in hollywood right now. it goes on like that for two more years, until the day he finds the letters hidden in the inside pocket of his father’s beloved fender. letters from woman asking to hear about her son. she mentions the money she’s sent over the years to make sure her baby boy is taken care of ( money he suspects had been snorted by the person meant to protect him. ) a fight erupts outside of the van he called home. and when words don’t seem to be enough, fist start flying. betrayal burns his insides as he packs his bags and takes off in the middle of the night
𝑾𝑯𝑬𝑹𝑬 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑯𝑬𝑳𝑳 𝑰𝑺 𝑹𝑨𝑫𝑪𝑳𝑰𝑭𝑭 ? that small town in indiana turns out to be his mother’s hometown. with less than 40 dollars and a whole lot of luck, he knocks on the door and is greeted by a pair of brown eyes that mirror his own. he learns that she worked as a teacher but has been on leave since her diagnosis ten months ago. metastatic melanoma. at first, the words sound like gibberish, but as her smile falters and she begins to explain, angel’s world falls apart again. their time together is limited but if there’s one thing the boy knows how to do, it's adapt. he takes a job at the local record shop. after lifetime of running with the wind, he finally has a reason to stay put.

* one of the kindest souls you'll ever meet. you probably wouldn't guess that by looking at him with a cigarette always tucked behind his ear while he looks up at the world from behind a book. he's reserved by nature but it doesn't take much to make a friend out of him. * he has a weird relationship with music, in many ways rock n' roll was his first love, there's a notebook under his pillow filled with songs and melodies inspired by his life on the road. on the other hand, music was the thing that ruined his life. it's the reason he never got a proper education, why he had to grow up at a young age, and the thing that was eating his father alive. working at a record store is not his brightest move but he doesn't know how to do anything else. * the kind of friend you want in a crisis, he thinks facts and acts faster. loyal but never to a fault, it's something that has to be earned but once you do it you have a ride or die for life. * falls in love quickly but never for long, relationships in his world were always a temporary thing which was good because it meant he never got hurt. * after being lied to pretty much his entire life, angel has developed what most phycologist would call trust issues. it creates a lot of internal conflict because he's trusting by nature and always wants to see the best in people
