Keep talking about Belarus!

Belarus has been a dictatorship for many, many years, but it was never this gruesome, this... real. In case you didn't know, Lukashenko has been in office since 1994, he changed the constitution to be able to do it. The elections have been widely known to be falsified for years, getting lukashenko 80% or 90% of votes each and every time, although his real support is estimated to be realistically around 3%, and it could be even lower now, since he still denies the very existence (existence, not seriousness!) of coronavirus.

On the 10th of august, another election took place. To no surprise, 3 of his main opponents have suddenly been arrested and disqualified from the election in the last weeks and, as you could expect, he won again with 80% of votes.

So people have gone to the streets. Lukashenko is apparently hiding in Turkey. It's hard to organize, to communicate or to even document what's happening due to all of the internet being completely down.

Rhe police is shooting people, using tear gas and actual grenades on the masses. A cop van drove into the crowd from the behind running multiple people over. There's a lot of blood, ambulances, and possible dead, (UPDATE: one confirmed dead) though it's really impossible to know, as there are little to no news sources available in Belarus, especially with the wifi being down.

The belarussian police, or militia, is an organization working not only obviously unethically, but illegally too - people are mass-arrested without an open cause, beaten, held in arrest for days, and killed. Just yesterday a man's entire arm was ripped off in some kind of explosion. (This is not confirmed, second-hand relation). Nothing quite of this scale happened since the 90s, or possibly ever in the modern history of Belarus. Belarussians are finally demanding change, and really, what can the police do against a whole nation?

I wish I could reffer everyone to some kind of petition, charity organization, anything, but the events are so current that it's hard for me to say how people from other countries could possibly help. All I can do is raise a little awareness of what's happening, so please, keep reading, keep yourselves updated and informed and don't forget belarus.

this post is devoted to the situation in Belarus

please read, it's important. I feel that everyone cared and cared about Black Lives Matter matter, not only people from the USA. it's fair but why doesn't anyone from my feed say anything about Belarus? do you think that there problems aren't related to your life? maybe, but pay attention to other people too

in a nutshel: unjust election in Belarus led to riots, meetings among citizens. these people doesn't have any weapons and just try to claim that they want justice, that they have their own choice. but they are killed anyway.

many people are dying. people who did nothing bad or wrong. they were just unlucky that someone shot them while they were in the streets.

all information about that is available. there are photos, videos. the problem is that it's mostly on Russian or Belarusian.

what's more (and scarier): Internet in Belarus isn't working. all networks, providers were blocked. people try to use VPN services, but not all of them are working and not everyone can even find the connection to download a VPN app. and what does mean? people can't talk with their friends, learn about what is happening right now. they are scared and alone. they afraid of leaving houses because they can be killed. even if they are just walking outside.

it isn't secret that I'm Russian. so I know many people from Belarus, I understand what is happening. but do you know what is shown on Russian TV? on TV they tell us that nothing bad is going on, the election was fair and people who protests against its results are ukranians and poles (because they do that to destroy Belarusian state system). yeah, it sounds like they are nuts but it's just a Russian propaganda

so, as I have said, pay attention to some "small" countries too. maybe they don't have anyone to help them

Russia is trying to ban legal transition for trans people

Elena Mizulina put forward a bill, that basically bans legal transition. It includes:

Adding the “sex” graph to the birth certificate. That graph cannot be changed in any way, and you also can’t get a new passport because of that.

banning (again) same-sex marriage, but now it is made based on the birth certificate so trans people cannot marry their loved ones.

banning the right to adopt children for the trans people

and WORSE, ALL THE CHANGES MADE IN THE PAST WILL BE DECLINED. People will get their old birth certificates back. the existing marriages will be no longer legal. And I don’t even want to think what will happen to the already adopted children of transgender parents

People are scared as fuck. I see lots of panic in russian social media and also on Twitter. They made a hashtag #ProtectRussianTransLives, so you can check it out for more info. And yeah, people started protesting.

The protest hasn’t even started properly. The police detained all of them, called them slurs, misgendered them, asked about genitals. Those pigs arrested two women - Mila Zemtsova and Polina Symonenko

image

Mila is a journalist who came there with a license. The police immediately arrested her for the organization (!) of the protest which is absolute nonsense. They kept her in the police department for more than 48 hours and took away her phone. She got a fine for nothing.

image

(translation: I want to not be afraid to show my passport)

Polina’s case is worse. She was arrested for repeated violation of the procedure for holding a public action (hope I wrote it right). Polina was also kept in the department for 48+ hours (it is illegal), misgendered and deadnamed. She was beaten in the court for taking a legal break. They gave her 14 days in a men’s prison.

This is hell. Please spread this post. People must know about this.

If you are from Russia, you can write a letter to the government. Here’s the link for the instruction:

I’m not from the USA so forgive me my confusion...but why does a school even need cops? I live in Belgium and we had cops over like, once in my entire school career, to teach us to safely drive our bicycles in the traffic of all things.

For more perspective…

1.7 million students are in schools with police but no counselors.

6 million students are in schools with police but no school psychologists.

10 million students are in schools with police but no social workers.

“Years and years ago, there was a production of The Tempest, out of doors, at an Oxford college on a lawn, which was the stage, and the lawn went back towards the lake in the grounds of the college, and the play began in natural light. But as it developed, and as it became time for Ariel to say his farewell to the world of The Tempest, the evening had started to close in and there was some artificial lighting coming on. And as Ariel uttered his last speech, he turned and he ran across the grass, and he got to the edge of the lake and he just kept running across the top of the water — the producer having thoughtfully provided a kind of walkway an inch beneath the water. And you could see and you could hear the plish, plash as he ran away from you across the top of the lake, until the gloom enveloped him and he disappeared from your view. And as he did so, from the further shore, a firework rocket was ignited, and it went whoosh into the air, and high up there it burst into lots of sparks, and all the sparks went out, and he had gone. When you look up the stage directions, it says, ‘Exit Ariel.’”

Anne With An E’s Cancellation Is Damaging To Indigenous Viewers

Anne with an E’s cancellation is damaging to Indigenous viewers

These reactions from Non-Native fans are proof of the effectiveness of the writing and acting, in teaching through storytelling. But here is the thing: Indigenous fans are watching, too. And in the age of politicians throwing around the words Truth and Reconciliation while continuing to walk the same paths their colonial forefathers did, we do not need another story about Indigenous pain and suffering. We need a story about Indigenous resilience and convalescence.

Hi everyone, even if you have never seen the show Anne with an E, I would really appreciate anyone willing to take a few minutes to read why this is not just a matter of cancelling a beloved period drama, but a matter of white corporations making a profit off of Indigenous suffering, without giving Indigenous healing in a betrayal of responsibility.

(Sincere apologies for the double-post, but as everyone knows, link post types don’t always show up in Tumblr tag searches, so this version is for that.)

Princess Latifa Is Missing!

Princess Latifa of Duba (in the UAE) has recently gone missing, but not before posting a chilling video of herself, stating that “if you are watching this video, then I’m either dead, or in a really really bad situation.”

Latifa is a member of the Dubai royal family, and recently decided to defect from the authoritarian regime, in which she had previously lived as a prisoner under her own father.

She recently tried to escape on a yacht. However the yacht was apprehended by Emirates forces and Princess Latifa was taken. She has since been missing. Her fate is unclear.

Human rights groups are counting on applying pressure on the UAE government to clarify her current location. The Dubai government has responded by accusing those who have reported her missing as criminals. The validity of this statement is highly questioned.

Princess Latifa is likely in grave, life threatening danger. Every reblog can contribute to the mounting pressure on the UAE government to reveal her location. Please reblog, we might save someone’s life.

Today we learned that conches, the sea-dwelling mollusks who live inside those big, beautiful conch seashells in warm tropical waters, peer out at the world with cartoonish eyes on tiny eyestalks. They see you. They see everything. And what’s more, they can regenerate their peepers should they happen to lose one or both of them.

“One 1976 paper dug into the specific behind these animals’ alien eyestalks. Sitting at the tips of long stalks, they contain retinas with both sensory cells and colored pigment cells. But the story gets weirder because obviously, it gets weirder. After amputating the conchs’ eyes, a fully-formed replacement took its place 14 days later. Humans, we really are losing this evolutionary game.”

But wait, that’s hardly the only surprising set of eyes under the sea. Scallops have eyes too, LOTS of them:

The case against free speech for fascists
When violent bigots use their platform to silence others, the result isn't necessarily more free speech for all.

NAZI’S SHOULDN’T BE  ENTITLED TO FREE SPEECH.And certainly not to free speech without consequences.Individual rights are not supposed to reach past the point where they are harmful to others, and we KNOW Nazism is a harmful ideology. They don’t even attempt deny they intend to harm others if they gain enough support, so why the hell should they be allowed to spread their poison?

Some people would argue that limiting free speech for such people could create a dangerous precedent.Problem is, the desire to protect free speech isn’t mutual in this case.Let neo-Nazi’s or Fascists  gain enough support, and  NO-ONE BUT THEM will have the right of free speech. We went through this before, people. Why repeat it?

Reblog if Black Lives Matter to you

Where are those woke white people at!?

My favorite version so far.Beautiful music, obviosly, but also beautifully acted and staged. The “messenger”part actually made me cry in class ,something I haven’t done since I was 14.

Monteverdi’s l'Orfeo, conducted by Jordi Savall, performed by Le Concert des Nations, La Capella Reial de Catalunya, and soloists.

I am so fond of this version, from the elegant set to the instrumentalists (crisp and full of vigour) to the warm and frankly imperfect singing. But what really makes it is Mr Savall’s entrance. The drums and brass start playing, and there he goes, striding down to the pit in his billowing robes. Jordi, you magnificent bastard!

My conure does exactly the same thing. He even talks to "the void" and gets upset when it doesn't answer. Why does he do that?Does he expect someone to come out?

When my parrot wants pets off someone he’ll go up to them, say hello, and lower his head to expose his neck. Recently, however, he’s been doing this to a pitch black crevice behind the couch, even trying to cajole the darkness with kissy noises and getting sad when the void won’t pet him. How do I explain that dark chasms are not friends?

Half of all US food produce is thrown away, new research suggests
The demand for ‘perfect’ fruit and veg means much is discarded, damaging the climate and leaving people hungry

Americans throw away almost as much food as they eat because of a “cult of perfection”, deepening hunger and poverty, and inflicting a heavy toll on the environment. By one government tally, about 60m tonnes of produce worth about $160bn (£119bn), is wasted by retailers and consumers every year - one third of all foodstuffs.

But that is just a “downstream” measure. In more than two dozen interviews, farmers, packers, wholesalers, truckers, food academics and campaigners described the waste that occurs “upstream”: scarred vegetables regularly abandoned in the field to save the expense and labour involved in harvest. Or left to rot in a warehouse because of minor blemishes that do not necessarily affect freshness or quality.

When added to the retail waste, it takes the amount of food lost close to half of all produce grown, experts say.

Retail giants argue that they are operating in consumers’ best interests, according to food experts. “A lot of the waste is happening further up the food chain and often on behalf of consumers, based on the perception of what those consumers want,” said Roni Neff, the director of the food system environmental sustainability and public health programme at the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future in Baltimore.

“Fruit and vegetables are often culled out because they think nobody would buy them,” she said.

But Roger Gordon, who founded the Food Cowboy startup to rescue and re-route rejected produce, believes that the waste is built into the economics of food production. Fresh produce accounts for 15% of supermarket profits, he argued.

“If you and I reduced fresh produce waste by 50% like [the US agriculture secretary] Vilsack wants us to do, then supermarkets would go from [a] 1.5% profit margin to 0.7%,” he said. “And if we were to lose 50% of consumer waste, then we would lose about $250bn in economic activity that would go away.”

The farmers and truckers interviewed said they had seen their produce rejected on flimsy grounds, but decided against challenging the ruling with the US department of agriculture’s dispute mechanism for fear of being boycotted by powerful supermarket giants. They also asked that their names not be used.

“I can tell you for a fact that I have delivered products to supermarkets that was [sic] absolutely gorgeous and because their sales were slow, the last two days they didn’t take my product and they sent it back to me,” said the owner of a mid-size east coast trucking company.

“They will dig through 50 cases to find one bad head of lettuce and say: ‘I am not taking your lettuce when that lettuce would pass a USDA inspection.’ But as the farmer told you, there is nothing you can do, because if you use the Paca [Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act of 1930] on them, they are never going to buy from you again. “Are you going to jeopardise $5m in sales over an $8,000 load?”

Massive food waste is based into capitalist agriculture. If the vast majority of the food produced in America’s farms was brought to market, it would drive prices down rapidly, threatening the profits of retailers. Less than 1% of this surplus food ever reaches the mouths of the hungry.
