It just hit me that in pretty much every single shitty pixel update, Dave was the one going somewhere else on the building top to get away from Dirk because he reminded him of Bro and he really didn’t want to talk to him

and Dirk was the one following Dave around the building because Dave reminded him of his idol and he really wanted to get to know him

Before i’d just been interpreting them as equally uncomfortable because they were both facing someone who was like their role models but different, but that’s not it at all, is it? They were having completely different reactions for the past two weeks.

okay so i’m super duper into this upd8??? like it was sad but i think it was incredibly important to dave and dirk’s development and gave us a really good look at how these boys work, and heres some of the main points. warning for major spoilers i guess??

hussie directly addressing bro’s abuse towards dave

dave explaining and showing how bro’s abuse affects him now (ie how dave doesn’t like to fight or be in danger, how he feels about heroism, and how he apologized for initiating physical contact with dirk)

how much dave is seriously NOT over bro at all, and how much living in that household for 13 years affected him

how even if lil cal was to blame for bro’s behavior, it was still shitty and inexcusable regardless of the amount of influence on bro

dave talking about how the other beta kids never really understood how bad it was for dave, and how dave wished he would’ve had someone who actually cared for him

dirk knowing that he was toxic and shitty towards jake, and understanding that he seriously needs to step off and leave jake alone now (”It’s not any one thing. I think I was just a completely toxic element in his life from day one. “

So Homestuck’s over

We don’t know what kind of conversations some of the reunited characters had. We don’t know what happened to Davepetasprite. We don’t know if Terezi and Vriska got their happy ending.

And surprising, I think I’m okay with that?

There was no ending for some of these characters that would have satisfied everyone. Someone would feel that their fave was mischaracterized, or that their ending was unfair, or that it wasn’t the right development.

And I guess for that reason, Hussie didn’t give us a concrete ending. He gave us some beautiful scenes, he gave us a snapshot of the environment the kids ended up in, and he left us space to fill in the rest with our headcanons and opinions.

This is an ending that leaves Homestuck wide open for post-game fic, for headcanons and fan-adventures and aus all filling in the gaps Hussie left. This is an ending that will allow fans to continue creating Homestuck for years to come.

Homestuck began as a fan adventure where you can choose your own path, and ultimately, that’s how it ended too.
