None of this disqualifies Canada from being perfect?

These aren’t the actions of the nation of Canada. These are the actions of private companies. They simply are not relevant to the discussion.

If I, a citizen of Canada, brutally murder my neighbours, that does not make the government of Canada murderers, now does it?

this is like when Jack Horner dedicated his entire life to arguing that Tyrannosaurus is actually not a super cool predator but in reality a cringe gay scavenger because his favourite dinosaur was often portrayed as tyrannosaurs’ prey

(elite paleontology reference)

can we talk about how lottienats disregard travnat/ mistynat/travis/misty as characters for their ship? they're insanely important to nat. and disregarding them means disregarding nat's development, drives, and ideals. they literally changed nat's perspective and character. like do you even care about lottienat as characters? and the whole 'i hate men so i'll ignore him and misty's a freak so i'll ignore her' like way to strip natalie of possibly the narratively two most important people to her

and i fear lottienats have a super surface level understanding be another thing is like. whether you like travnat/travis or not he's important for her characters development and drive for her entire life. there's a reason why travis haunts her story, whether you like him or not you gotta understand why he's fundamental for her character

This is heresy and I refuse to stand for it.

The tribunal did defeat Dagoth Ur. Many, many, times. The problem is that he always came back. He also was certainly not alone - he had the full force of the 6th House behind him.

The Three could have destroyed Dagoth Ur after the first time. The problem is that would have destroyed them too, because their power came from the exact same source. Because he couldn’t be killed, then, he grew in power and the Three grew weaker until they really couldn’t kill him.

Even when he captured Sunder and Keening, it was by ambush, not in open combat, and only against Ayem and Seht. When Vehk showed up, he drove Dagoth away and saved the other Tribunes.

Dagoth was not a genius or a god. He was a madman and a traitor who brute-forced a situation in which he held all the cards. Remember, only the Three are worthy of worship. The Sharmat is false. To follow the Devil of Dagoth means only death.

i've said it before and i'll say it again, do you ever think about how dagoth ur managed to hold the red mountain for hundreds & hundreds of years? it was 3vs1, talk about fake ass tribunal gods. or alternatively dagoth was so competent with his godhood and warfare that the tribunal just couldn't secure access to the heart no matter what even though they desperately needed to replenish their powers yearly. whichever it was, almsivi were so scared that all they could do effectively was to scribble booklets of how he's the satan. it's pretty clear who's actually worth the worship here tbh

Also, Caesar was a progressive! Obviously not in the sense of modern social progressivism, but in the Roman political system he was considered a progressives. The conspirators were all *Optimates*, old corrupt conservatives who wanted to maintain the status quo that made them rich. Caesar purged corruption, reformed the grain dole so that it actually benefited the poor, and actively went against the byzantine (an ironic word to use, I know) political structures of Rome and gave much more power to the populace during his terms as Consul.

okay istg if one of you does #america on my posts again im biting.

JULIUS CAESAR is NOT like trump! Julius caesar got stabbed by rich guys for supporting the people, regular people fucking loved julius. The guys that killed caesar were run out of Rome! because everyone was so mad about it! and trump just fucking sucks.

also im not american.

I don’t think I have, actually. I went and read the whole thing, and her main idea is people “misusing the word technology”. That’s literally what she says two paragraphs before the above excerpt -

“But [the word technology] is consistently misused to mean only the enormously complex and specialised technologies of the past few decades, supported by massive exploitation both of natural and human resources. This is not an acceptable use of the word.”

That is precisely the sentiment I was responding to - the idea that our modern use of the word “technology” is somehow wrong or misinformed. But it’s not. It has simply progressed as our society has progressed.

She goes on to write that “Its technology is how a society copes with physical reality…” and no, it isn’t. Perhaps it was, centuries ago. But within the modern societal consciousness, that is not what technology means. The meaning has changed. It’s just like how you wouldn’t describe, say, a fantasy magic system as “weird” because “weird” doesn’t have any relation to magic in the modern parlance. But it did - in Shakespeare’s day, that was the word’s primary meaning - magic, power, the occult, fate, witchcraft - though he would have spelled it “weyard”.

The most ridiculous thing is that this is all written in response a review of one of her books, in which the reviewer is very clearly using “technology” in the modern sense. But she still pedantically insists that, actually, his review is incorrect because… she’s working with a completely different definition of the word than everyone else on the planet.

And on a side note, fuck this whole… essay? I hate it. ‘Not an acceptable use of the word’ my ass. That’s the kind of linguistic arch-conservativism that creates institutions like the Académie Française.

We have been so desensitized by a hundred and fifty years of ceaselessly expanding technical prowess that we think nothing less complex and showy than a computer or a jet bomber deserves to be called “technology” at all. As if linen were the same thing as flax — as if paper, ink, wheels, knives, clocks, chairs, aspirin pills, were natural objects, born with us like our teeth and fingers — as if steel saucepans with copper bottoms and fleece vests spun from recycled glass grew on trees, and we just picked them when they were ripe...

surprise! The meaning of words changes as society advances. Five hundred years ago, a “factory” was a warehouse where traders would store their goods in a foreign country. Two thousand years ago, a “factorium” was an oil press.

“Technology” was once a created product. Now, it’s something specifically technical, running on electricity with wires and screens and making beeps and boops. That’s the way of the world, the way language functions and has always functioned.
